Principal’s Message—December 2015
Dear Parents:
It was wonderful to see parents and grandparents taking time to visit our school during American Education Week.
Spending time with your child or grandchild at school sends a powerful message that you value their education and
support them in their efforts.
Our fundraisers have been successful thanks to everyone’s support. These events are important sources of funds that
are used to purchase many things the school would not be able to afford for our students. All proceeds go to items and
programs that benefit SMS. I would like to send a big THANK YOU to our PTO, parents, students, and teachers for their
support and time making the fundraisers a success.
This year our winter concerts are December 8th for the chorus and December 10th for the band and orchestra at Century
High School beginning at 7:00. Our music department and students have been preparing and the students are ready to
perform. We would like to extend an invitation to family and friends to come out and enjoy some wonderful musical
performances.
Important Announcement
The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce and the Carroll County Public School System are seeking nominations for the
annual Outstanding Teacher Awards. The deadline for nominations is December 31, 2015. The Outstanding Teacher
Awards recognize teachers of the Carroll County Public School System who represent excellence in the profession. Any
full-time elementary, middle, high school, career and technology, special education teacher, or media specialist in the
Carroll County Public School System is eligible for nomination.
Any parent, student, fellow teacher, supervisor, or school administrator may submit a nomination online by going to the
Carroll County Public Schools website link for Outstanding Teacher Nomination. Please go to Page 12 in this newsletter
for more information, including the necessary links.
Nominators are urged to nominate a teacher or teachers who have made a difference in their lives or a student’s life and
to give specific examples of what the teacher has done and how he/she inspires students to learn. All nominees will be
invited to the Chamber’s awards program on March 30, 2016, when eight finalists will be named. These eight teachers
will be eligible for the Carroll County Teacher of the Year Award presented by Carroll County Public Schools. This is an
excellent way to recognize teachers for the outstanding work they do educating children.
I would like to thank each of you for being active in your child’s education and communicating with the teachers and the
administration. The staff and administration wish each of you a winter break filled with happy family times and a wonderful
New Year.
Sincerely,
Ralph Billings
Principal

Did you know that Sykesville Middle has a food pantry?
The Sykesville Middle Food Pantry is open to the community two Wednesday afternoons each month from 3:15
pm to 4:15 pm during the school year. Coming up in December it is open on the 9th and the 22nd (Tuesday)
and in January on the 6th and the 20th. Please visit our website for the complete calendar. If you know of an
individual or family in need of this vital resource, please spread the word.
Our food pantry also accepts donations from the community throughout the school year. With the holidays
upon us, supplies are running low. Donations are much appreciated, and they can be dropped off in the main
office during regular school hours.
Nurse’s Notes
I hope everyone has a safe holiday season. Please review the information on preventing the flu by covering your cough/
sneeze and washing your hands. I would like to also remind you not to give your children products containing aspirin if they
have flu like symptoms, as this can lead to Reye’s Syndrome. There is a fact sheet on Reye’s Syndrome in this newsletter.
I am trying to keep parents better informed about the use of the nurse’s office by the students. I will sign at the bottom of
the daily page in their agenda books, and will still always call if the situation warrants. Please call if you have any questions.
I have sent home various forms requesting medical information. Please have your child return the completed forms to me
as soon as possible.
Please remember an adult must bring medication to school. The parent must complete the medication consent form. The
doctor must also sign the medication form if it is for anything other than Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Whenever your child has a
sore throat and/or nasal congestion, I would encourage them to have a water bottle at school. The students may bring plain
throat lozenges to school with a parent note. I give the student enough for the day and keep the bag in my office.
Eating breakfast would be a great New Year’s resolution! The whole family can benefit from breaking the “fast” each
morning.
Finally, please contact me if there are any changes to your child’s health status or their medications. I am here to provide
the best care possible for your child.

IMPORTANT REMINDER
Parents, please remember, when giving your children permission to walk or car ride home with another
student, the office must have a note from ALL parents/guardians involved. Please list the names of all
students involved in the change, including your student, so that we may cross reference against all notes
granting permission. It is important for the office staff to be certain that all parents/guardians are aware of
the change in dismissal. In the case of emergencies, please call the office at (410) 751-3545.

Help Families in Need!
Sykesville Middle School has a Goodwill Bin! As you drive into
school, it is located on the left in the corner of the parking lot - it is
big and blue and hard to miss.
Carroll County Public Schools and Goodwill Industries of Monocacy Valley are
partnered in an effort to support struggling families in Carroll County. We supply $20 vouchers to families so that they can purchase clothing from Goodwill. CCPS receives these vouchers from Goodwill based upon the weight of
donations collected in the Goodwill collection boxes that are placed at many of
our schools throughout the county. So far this school year, CCPS has been
able to assist 58 families by issuing 144 vouchers. But there are families on a
waiting list. Please consider donating your discarded clothing (new, used, even
torn and stained) and small household items to Goodwill using the collection
box at SMS.
Funding Factory
Over 500 million printer cartridges are thrown away every year in the United
States contributing billions of tons of waste to the nation’s landfills. Inkjet and
laser cartridges can be refurbished and Sykesville Middle can earn money by
collecting them. Please send in your empty inkjet and laser cartridges!
For more information go to: www.FundingFactory.com
Recycle, recycle, recycle!
What Goes in the Paper Retriever® Bin?
Newspaper and Inserts – New newsprint can be
made from 100% recycled paper. No virgin fiber has to
be added when using this type of process.
Magazines/catalogs – Our Retriever program is happy
to take magazines and catalogs, all slick paper. We
can use all this high quality/high fiber paper with the
exception of any paper coated in wax.
Office/School papers – These types of paper are
highly recyclable. Because of the proliferation of paper
created by offices and schools, please use the
Retriever bin to recycle all that you can. We are able to
accept window envelopes, paperback books,
workbooks and staples without a problem. Shredded
paper is acceptable but please bag the shreds before
putting them in the Retriever bin. However, please do
not recycle colored paper, wrapping or tissue paper,
carbon paper or sticky notes.
Mail – Most direct mail is printed on high quality
recyclable paper. Please recycle the mail that you feel
comfortable putting in our recycling bin.
