Meet the AUTHOR: ALICE WALKER DIRECTORS NOTES “A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.” –Maya Angelou Alice Walker is an American author, poet, and activist and considered one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. She was the first African American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for The Color Purple in 1983. She also won the National Book Award that same year. The youngest of eight children, Alice Walker was born in 1944 in Eatonton, Georgia, into a family of poor sharecroppers. Her mother worked as a maid to help support the family and educate her children. An accident with a BB gun left Walker blinded in her right eye. The scarring made her very selfconscience and shy. She found solace in reading and writing poetry and later graduated as the valedictorian of her high school. Walker attended Spelman College in Atlanta on a scholarship and later transferred to Sarah Lawrence where she studied abroad in Africa. She published her first short story in 1965 the same year that she graduated from college. Walker has written seven novels, four collections of short stories and volumes of essays and poetry. Her literary career and human rights activism have been internationally celebrated and her work has been translated into two-dozen languages. The best selling novel, Possessing the Secret of Joy, details the devastation of genital mutilation and led to the documentary, Warrior Marks. She has served for two sessions of The Russell Tribunal on Palestine in Cape Town, South Africa and in New York. In addition to the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award, Walker has been honored many times including the O. Henry Award for Kindred Spirits, Humanist of the Year in by the American Humanist Association, Lillian Smith Award from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the LennonOno Grant for Peace in 2010. When asked by Mister in the final moments of The Color Purple if she ever loved anything special, Celie responds simply “Birds, I guess.” Celie is perhaps like a bird, constantly searching for some hope, some contentment in her life and eventually finding her true voice. The Color Purple is the ultimate story of survival. A young black woman, born into a despairing existence in rural Georgia at the turn of the century, is forced into an abusive relationship with a man she only knows as “Mister”. Celie and Mister, both products of their circumstances and generation have no hope in sight. Through life-changing encounters with Sofia, Shug Avery, and Harpo, Celie is able to find her voice, stand up for herself, and say “I’m here.” It is this ultimate realization that she is July 11 – August 3, 2014 here and she is worth something that provides her with the only real tool for survival – herself. From the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Alice Walker to the Academy Award winning film, The Color Purple is now given a beautiful theatrical adaptation that truly sings because its characters must. The beloved individuals in this story are able to go further, dig deeper, and express a completely new range of emotion – from sorrow to joy – because they are given the ability to sing. As we continue on the eternal search for an answer in this beautiful thing called life, we should remember Celie’s realization – “I’m Here…” –Chase Kniffen From Memories to Juke Joints: Donors Creating the Environment for The Color Purple We would like to thank the many individuals and institutional funders who have given to Virginia Repertory Theatre so generously in the past year. Rogers Martha Vannoy Jay M. & Marilyn Weinberg The scenic design for this production of The Color Purple has been greatly inspired and influenced by the artwork of Betye Saar and Beverly Buchanan. Saar’s assemblages combine vintage photographs, architectural elements, keepsake boxes, found objects, clothing, jewelry, drawings, paintings, script and mystical imagery to create evocative and haunting compositions. Buchanan’s ‘shacks’ are wooden assemblages reflecting the now lost houses that she remembers from growing up in the south. Their rough yet beautiful construction seem to suggest the hard and hope-filled lives of their inhabitants. Additional inspiration came from pieces included in the Home Sweet Home exhibit at Hollins University including works by Susan Jamison and Annie Waldrop. Finally, we are indebted to Birney Imes’s and the celebrated book Juke Joint which provides insight and the inspiration for our paint treatment for this production. –Ron Keller Stage Managers ($2,500 – $4,999) Virginia A.
