FROM THE PASTOR
RESPECT LIFE MONTH – Last week I invited you to join me in reflecting on
respecting the lives of children in the womb, citing The Joy of the Gospel by Pope
Francis. This week, again citing the same papal teaching, I invite you to join me in
reflecting on respecting our brothers and sisters who are migrants or refugees.
Pope Francis on Respecting Migrants
210. …..Migrants present a particular challenge for me, since I am the pastor of a Church
without frontiers, a Church which considers herself mother to all. For this reason, I exhort all
countries to a generous openness which, rather than fearing the loss of local identity, will prove
capable of creating new forms of cultural synthesis. How beautiful are those cities which overcome
paralysing mistrust, integrate those who are different and make this very integration a new factor of
development! How attractive are those cities which, even in their architectural design, are full of
spaces which connect, relate and favour the recognition of others!
211. I have always been distressed at the lot of those who are victims of various kinds of human
trafficking. How I wish that all of us would hear God’s cry: “Where is your brother?” (Gen 4:9) Where is
your brother or sister who is enslaved? Where is the brother and sister whom you are killing each day
in clandestine warehouses, in rings of prostitution, in children used for begging, in exploiting
undocumented labour. Let us not look the other way. There is greater complicity than we think. The
issue involves everyone! This infamous network of crime is now well established in our cities, and
many people have blood on their hands as a result of their comfortable and silent complicity.
OUR MIGRANT ROOTS - Right now Jewish friends are in the middle of their the eight day celebration
of Sukkot when many Jews will spend at least part of each day living, eating, and sleeping outdoors
in make-shift dwellings (Sukkot is Hebrew for “Huts” or “Tents”). Sukkot reminds us that it was while
our ancestors were sojourning through a desert, unsettled, in-between, dwelling in flimsy, nonpermanent dwellings, that God gave them the gift of the Law through Moses at Mount Sinai. Having an
awareness of our dependency and a feel for what is not permanent can be a help to our becoming
“poor in spirit,” to coming to know God and to discerning God’s will. This historical level of the Sukkot
celebration is layered upon a prior agricultural aspect of the occasion celebrating the ingathering of the
fall harvest. Sukkot evolved into a Temple festival marked by pilgrimage, great joy, many lights and
flowing water.
Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, the Chief Rabbi of Great Britain, said, “we’re exposed to the heat by day and
the cold by night (so that we might)…understand what it is to be homeless….One of the things we fear
most is the stranger….The one commandment reiterated more than any other—36 times—is
love the stranger for you were once strangers in the land of Egypt. Or, to put it a contemporary
way, love the stranger because, to him, you’re a stranger. And this sense that we are enlarged by the
people who are different from us—we are not threatened by them that needs cultivating, can be
cultivated, and would lead us to see the 21st century as full of blessing, not full of fear.”
“IN ORDER TO FORM A MORE PERFECT UNION” – FYI, I hope you are planning to
participate in our bi-lingual and multi-cultural celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of
Guadalupe this December. This annual celebration of the Patron Saint of all the
Americas is a golden door for Grace for all the members of our parish and for all
Americans.

FROM THE PASTOR, cont.
TODAY’S READINGS - While the blue Gather books in pews function primarily as hymnals, we want
to point out that the Biblical Readings for this Lord’s Day (Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time,
Cycle A) may be found in Gather at number 1173. Additional Mass Prayers such as the Confiteor,
the Gloria and the Creed can be found just inside the front cover of each book.
A DOCTOR’S PRESCRIPTION - This Wednesday, October 15, we will celebrate the
Memorial of St. Teresa of Jesus (+1582) a Doctor of the Church who taught: "Can
there be a greater evil than that of being ill at ease in our own house? What hope can
we have of finding rest outside of ourselves if we cannot be at rest within? .... Believe
me, if we don't obtain and have peace in our own house, we'll not find it outside. Let
this war be ended. Through the blood He shed for us I ask those who have not begun
to enter into themselves to do so; and those who have begun, not to let the war make
them turn back."
CONSUMER CULTURE – As we celebrate the Feast of St. Ignatius of
Antioch this Friday, October 17, let’s allow ourselves to be challenged by his
witness. His consuming Christ’s Word and Body each Sunday gave him the
capacity not to be consumed by the hatred of his captors or by the violence of
the mob even as he was consumed by wild beasts in the Colosseum of Rome
in the year 108. This elderly bishop was tossed as a tidbit to folks’ ravenous
appetite to be entertained at the expense of the suffering of others. Not so
unlike ourselves today when through social media and gossip we revel in and
gorge upon the “trainwrecks” that our brothers and sisters at times make of their lives.
On Monday, October 20, from 7:00 to 8:00 PM in St. Ann Chapel Bill
Donaghy (a speaker approved by the archdiocese) will speak about the
upcoming World Meeting of Families (WMOF) and take questions.
So, how shall we as a parish prepare to receive the graces offered through
the WMOF? One way will be through a series of programs presenting and
unpacking the Theology of the Body.
First, on Monday, October 20, from 7:00 to 8:00 PM in St. Ann Chapel Bill Donaghy will present
an Introduction to the Theology of the Body and take questions. The Theology of the Body
(TOB) is the living unpacking of the life-giving, marriage affirming and family supporting teachings
of Saint John Paul II. That said, TOB is first and fundamentally a set of teachings about the
meaning of the human person, the destiny of each enfleshed spirit, and the Presence and Action
of God in the daily life of each human being, each human relationship and in human cultures.
Second, on Wednesday, December 3 at 7:00 PM in Sacred Heart Church we will offer The
Theology of the Body in a Secular World presented by Meghan Cokeley, the Director of the
Archdiocesan Office for the New Evangelization.
Third, if enough people are interested, on Saturday, March 14 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM we will
offer A Deeper Look into the Theology of the Body led by Bill Donaghy from the Theology of
the Body Institute.
If you would like to be a part of a planning team to promote the WMOF at St. Ann's, please contact
Madelyn O'Hara at [email protected] or 610-639-0923.

Columbus Day - Some say America
was discovered by Columbus, others
say it was the Vikings or Irish, and some
Aboriginal people say they are insulted
by such claims of having been
“discovered.” Perhaps the one who
discovers America is the one who
comes to see that all people are created equal and that
all people at all stages of life have the right to life, liberty
and the pursuit of happiness. Or again, perhaps the
one who discovers America is the one who sees that
America consists of 23 nations, one billion people, 40%
speaking mostly English and 60% speaking mostly
Spanish. This is the perspective Pope Saint John Paul
II brings to light in 1999 when he wrote the letter The
Church in America to the Catholics of North, Central
and South America.

Registration is now open for Holy Family

grades 1 - 8. Open to all children of the
parish. Deadline is November 1, with
discount until October 15. Sign up now
at www.hfscyo.com.
RESPONSIBLE CITIZENSHIP – Conscience is
sacred. That said, conscience is not to be equated
with or reduced to what I merely feel or simply like
or by inclination prefer. Conscience is what—after
prayer, study, mature conversation and challenge—
I have come to believe is God’s will. We have much
chatter about following conscience; we can benefit
from a bit more conscientiousness when it comes to
doing the work conscience formation. Now is the
time to be studying the issues and candidates
positions as we approach Election Day on
November 4.
