MASSES FOR THE WEEK
Dear Friends:
Greetings and welcome! Many thanks to all who
have and have continued to offer their support to our
Annual Stewardship Collection. I am most grateful.
This Sunday we will welcome the Holy Name Societies
from our Archdiocese and from the surrounding states
for the Annual Holy Name Mass in Honor of Blessed
John of Vercelli. The Mass will be celebrated in our
Church at 3:00PM by Bishop Joseph
Martino. My thanks to our Holy Name
Members who have organized this annual
event.
Next weekend our second collection
will be the Annual Collection for Mission
Sunday. Also, at Alvethorpe Park, Queen
of Angels School will have the Annual Angels on the Run.
The program begins at 9:00AM with Mass followed by
the festivities.
Our Gospel reading this Sunday from St. Luke gives us
the account of the ten lepers who approach Jesus and
beg for mercy. Jesus hears their prayer and grants them
not only mercy – He knows their need –
but also He cleanses them of their leprosy.
However, only one, a Samaritan, returns
to offer thanks. He is recognized for his
return and offering of thanks as Jesus also
acknowledges his faith. In our first
reading from Kings, a similar cleansing
takes place in Naaman as he plunges into the Jordan
River at the bidding of the Prophet Elisha. We begin
each Eucharist by praying “Lord Have Mercy!” Jesus
grants us that mercy and acknowledges our faith. May
we always be grateful. Let us show our continued
thanks as we return to the Lord, share our faith and
leave proclaiming God’s goodness to us. For we
know “The Lord has revealed to the nations, His
saving power!”
Have a good week and God bless you!

TODAYS READINGS:
First Reading: 2 Kings 5:14-17
Second Reading: 2 Timothy 2:8-13
Gospel: Luke 17:11-19
DEACONS CORNER
After Elisha sends word by his servant to Naaman to
wash seven times in the Jordan, Naaman balks at being
sent off to this inconsequential
river, having excepted Elisha
himself to cure his leprosy.
Eventually he yields to his own
servants’ entreaties, and bathes
seven times in the Jordan. The
result: skin like a baby’s.
Naaman returns to Elisha,
wanting to pay for services
rendered. When Elisha refuses, he asks for some dirt to
take back home so he can worship the God of Israel in
his own backyard. (The belief was that the Lord, the
God of Israel, could only be found on his own turf, so
Naaman wants to take a little of Israel home to worship
God there.) Jesus heals ten lepers in today’s Gospel;
only one, a Samaritan, returns to give thanks. Jesus
praises the man’s grateful response. A grateful heart is
all God wishes for continuing to heal us from whatever
isolates us from God or others. Have you given thanks
for all the Lord has done?

MASS OF REMEMBRANCE AT OLHC
Sunday, October 30th, 2016 at 10:30
We invite everyone who has had a loved one pass away
this past year, to a Mass of Remembrance. We ask you
to please call the rectory at 215-886-3456 if you plan to
attend on behalf of your love ones.
PUBLIC SQUARE ROSARY RALLY
Please join us to pray the Rosary at OLHC Blessed John
Of Vercelli Rosary Walk (in front of the rectory) after the Sat.
8AM Mass on Oct. 15th. Please join us in offering reparation
for the sins and offenses committed against the Immaculate
Heart of Mary and to fervently pray for the conversion of the
United States. Please come and pray the Rosary.
The Catholic Church recognizes various levels of
Liturgical celebrations representing events important to
the mystery of our salvation. What are the differences
between solemnities, feasts, and memorials?
Solemnities are the highest degree and are usually
reserved for the most important mysteries of faith.
Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation are always
considered solemnities. Other examples include the
Solemnity of St. Joseph (March 19th), the Solemnity of
the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Friday after the Feast of
Corpus Christi), and the solemnity of St. Peter and St.
Paul (June 29). Solemnities have the same basic
elements as a Sunday Liturgy, including both the Gloria
and the Creed.
Feasts honor a mystery or title of the Lord, of Our Lady,
or of saints of particular importance (such as the
Apostles and Evangelists) and some of historical
importance such as the Deacon St. Lawrence. On these
days, the Gloria is recited but not the Creed.
Next in line are memorials. A memorial usually
commemorates saints but may also celebrate some
aspect of the Lord or of Mary. Examples include the
optional memorial of the Holy Name of Jesus or the
obligatory memorial of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
The readings of the day may be used, and the lectionary
recommends against an excessive use of specific
readings for the saints so as not to interrupt too much
the continuous cycle of daily readings. The Gloria is not
said on these days.
The Church provides us with these many opportunities
to worship our Lord and recognize the important people
and devotions in our faith. If you have a question about
your faith or on Church teachings, please submit your
question to Deacon John Nucero at
[email protected]. Thank you.
