It was a lovely warm summer’s day many years ago. We children were sitting out in the garden,
eating pieces of Mum’s home-made yeast cake and drinking chocolate milk and listening to the
grown-ups talking, when suddenly one of us realised there was something missing. It was the
clatter of the S-Bahn, which we always heard going past our place on its journey across Berlin.
And after listening for ages and coming to the conclusion that everything really was at a standstill,
we all began to feel a little nervous. So my mother asked the neighbours if they knew what was
going on. Meanwhile my father was twiddling madly at the dial of our short-wave radio, trying to
pick up anything about it from one of the few stations on the air in those days. “Troops of the
National People’s Army today closed the border!” one of the stations announced. We were all
shocked!
