Dear Parents/Guardians, Students and Friends of Herron High School,
My staff and I have daily reminders of the many responsibilities we have toward our students and
the families who entrust their children into our care every day. Even more important than
providing an exemplary education is the charge to protect our students and keep them safe while
on campus and, to the best of our ability, while traveling to and from school.
Many of our processes directly support student safety. For example, Herron High School is a
“closed campus.” What this means is that once students arrive on campus, they must remain on
campus under supervision until dismissal time or an early parent or guardian pick-up. Students
are not permitted to leave school to visit local businesses such as McDonalds, The Foundry or
CVS. A closed campus also means that campus visitors must sign in at Student Services before
proceeding to a meeting. We are fortunate to have the contracted services for door monitors who
provide added security. Additionally, safety cameras are installed at our doors, stairways and
hallways to help monitor student safety.
Another process we have in place is regular school wide safety drills that cover a variety of
circumstances, whether the threat is from tornados, fire or intruders. Students practice safe
responses to dangers so in the event of an actual emergency they will know what to do.
Parking lot safety is also a daily concern. Our teachers, staff, and administrators all direct traffic,
police jaywalking, and provide supervision before and after school in order to keep your children
as safe as possible. Parents can help by respecting and complying with traffic guards, driving
slowly and carefully, instructing your student not to jaywalk, and following the prescribed traffic
flow at all time. Never drop-off or pick up your student on Pennsylvania Street. A few extra
minutes spent in the parking lot queue is a small price to pay to keep your student, and all of our
students, safe.
Finally, snow covered streets and frigid temperatures present a serious danger. A person can
start experiencing the onset of hypothermia or frostbite when temperatures dip below freezing.
The risk of frostbite increases as air temperature falls below 5° F, even without the presence of
wind. When subzero wind chills become a factor as they did last week, frostbite can occur on
exposed skin in just minutes – in less than the time it takes for a bus to arrive. Many of our
students depend on IndyGo or must walk a significant distance to school. Because of this, school
closures will occur when temperatures exceed our threshold for student safety. Our Continued
Learning Plan keeps students engaged in learning even during closures.
Please be sure your student is properly dressed in layered clothing that protects against cold,
windy or wet weather, and that very little skin is exposed to the elements. If your student is in
need of a warm coat, hat, scarf or gloves, please let us know.

Continued Learning Plan for School Cancellations
In order to continue the learning process in the event of school closures, students will be able to access assignments
online. Any time there is a school cancellation for any reason, all teachers will update their Haiku websites by 10:30 AM
with a 15-20 minute assignment or activity that students should complete on their day off an updated information on when
the assignment will be due. Teachers will also post any changes to the dates of upcoming tests or due dates. If a student
is unable to access or complete the assignment on the snow day, he/she will receive a copy on the first day back to class
and will have an extra day to complete it. It is very important that students check the Haiku pages of all classes whenever
school is cancelled.
Graduation orders
On Tuesday, February 24, representatives from Clark School Services/Herff Jones Company will be at Herron to take
orders for caps and gowns, announcements, and optional keepsake items. They will be in the cafeteria during lunch,
11:00-1:00, and again after school until 5:00p.m. Parents or students may place orders. The graduation cap, gown,
and tassel are paid for through the Senior Fee as part of Herron’s book fees. No deposit or payment is required
when these are ordered, however, outstanding book fee payments should be made to Herron’s business office.
Announcements and keepsake items are optional purchases. These items are ordered and paid for directly to
Clark School Services/ Herff Jones and require a deposit. They will accept checks or credit cards. Ordering
instructions can be found in the packets distributed to seniors last week.
Academic Team Super Bowl Dates
The dates for the Academic Team Super Bowl competitions have been announced! Our first invitational will be on
Monday, March 2, at Central Catholic High School. The second invitational will be on Monday, March 16, at Plainfield
High School. The regional competition (for all teams to qualify for state competition) will be on Tuesday, April 21.

Abe Lincoln Circle of Valor Awards
The Kiwanis (Downtown) Club of Indianapolis recently honored 25 area high school seniors who have overcome
significant obstacles in their lives and presented scholarships and honor gifts to the candidates at its 40th annual Abe
Lincoln Scholarship Awards banquet. Congratulations to Maria Moscato-Goodpaster for receiving an honor gift!
Governor Pence acknowledged Herron High School’s academic excellence at the State House last week at the Quality
Education Day event. Members of the Achaean 80 attended and met lawmakers as they toured the State House.
2014-2015 Herron High School Yearbook
THE ACHAEAN, the Herron High School Yearbook, is available for pre-order through Spring Break; after that time, the
price will increase by $5 from $35 to $40 each. Please print the form at the end of this newsletter and attach a check for
$35 to the form attached, and get it to Student Services before Spring Break.
Parent /Teacher Day – February 27
We look forward to our second Parent-Teacher conferences of the academic school year on Friday, February 27. We will
be targeting students who are having the most difficulty in their classes. Parents of those students will be contacted by
the teachers soon to schedule a specific conference time. If you are not contacted and feel that it is important to meet
with any of your student’s teachers, please email them to request an appointment.
Junior Parent College Night – April 16
Herron’s Advising Department has added a 2nd Semester Junior Parent College Night – scheduled for April 16th from
5:30 – 7:00. Please join us for an evening to check-in on where your student should be in the college application process
and to hear from a range of experts. There will be a lengthy Q+ A time as well.
Black History Month Celebration
We will celebrate Black History Month on Wednesday, Feb. 25th from 4:15-5:30 in the Theatre of Russell Hall. Join us for
live performances and music followed by a punch and cookie reception.
Annual Hearing Screening
The annual state mandated hearing screening of all 10th grade students is scheduled for March 16th and 17th. Please
notify the school in writing if you do not want your child screened.
College Connections for Juniors and Seniors
The deadline to file the FAFSA—Free Application for Federal Student Aid—is March 10, 2015. Some colleges set
their priority deadline at March 1 or earlier, so be sure to check college websites. To file, go to www.fafsa.gov (NOT
fafsa.com which charges a fee).

Indiana Association of School Counselors Psychology Scholarship: $500 will be awarded to a high school
senior who has an interest in pursuing a career in the field of psychology. Click here for the application IASP

Regions Bank Riding Forward Scholarship Essay Contest: 16 seniors will receive a $5000 scholarship and
16 freshmen-juniors will receive a $3,500 scholarship. To enter the contest, tell about an African-American who

Church’s Scholars Program: $1000 awards to seniors who plan to attend college full time in 2015-16, have a

Buick Achievers Scholarship Program for high school seniors who plan to attend a four-year college or

2/25 Super Hero Senior Night!! The Herron Achaeans will host the Bishop Chatard Trojans at Washington Park at
6/7:30p. Come dressed as your favorite super hero and cheer on the Achaeans as they TROUNCE the Trojans! We will
also celebrate our Boys Basketball, Swimming and Cheer Seniors at halftime. All super heroes will get in for $1.
2/27 The Boys Basketball Team will compete at Harrison High School. JV will play at 6:00p followed by Varsity at 7:30p.

Congratulations to The Herron High School Boy Swim Team for representing Herron in the IHSAA Sectionals last week.
The following boys advanced from Prelims to Finals! We are so proud of you! All 3 relay teams made it into the top 8 for
the IHSAA Championship Final. Max Ryan qualified for the Championship final for the 100 Back and 200 IM. Carter
Conaway and Paul Sorensen qualified for the consolation final for the 50 Free. Caleb Van Winkle qualified for the
consolation final for the 100 Free.
Spring Update
Student-athletes interested in participating in Herron Athletics this spring must submit ALL mandatory paperwork to the
Athletic Department before participation will be permitted. Please visit the NEW athletics website to print, read and sign
all mandatory forms. The forms are found under the HQ tab.
All students planning to participate in any sport MUST have a valid, IHSAA physical exam on file with the Athletic Director
along with the competed parent packet and the NEW parent-athlete handbook. Athletes are NOT PERMITTED to attend

conditioning or practice without up to date paperwork. All physicals and paperwork from last year expired on April 1 .
Please submit your paperwork by Feb. 28 to Joanna Wiggins. (The deadline has been extended due to the snow days)
January Grade Reports determine the first portion of spring eligibility. Students must be passing 5 classes at the time of
grade reports. The next grade check will be April 8.

Injury Checks
An Athletic Trainer from Select Physical Therapy will be conducting injury checks every Tuesday from 4p-5p in the Fesler
Cafeteria or Room 38M. We encourage each athlete to see the trainer to get checked before practice. He can show your
athlete how to tape an injury, stretch a muscle or give recommendations for injuries. This service is free to all Herron
athletes. Please contact Joanna Wiggins with any questions or concerns.
Boosters! We need your help at the Herron home games this season. We are in need of parent volunteers to help at

Herron High School Board of Directors Meetings
Herron High School's Board of Directors meets regularly on the third Tuesday of alternating months except in December.
These meetings are open to the public. The next meeting will take place on April 21, 7:30 a.m. in the library of Steve and
Livia Russell Hall.
