GRAEME COLLEGE Templeton Drive P O Box 281 Grahamstown 6140 Telephone 046 – 6227227 Fax 046 – 6227491 Founded: 1873 Graeme College’s Vision Statement “To strive for excellence by developing all to their full potential.” NEWSLETTER - Friday 6 March 2015 “Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere.” ~ Chinese Proverb It is very important to acknowledge special days. Last weekend marked the inauguration of Dr Sizwe Mabizela as the Vice-Chancellor of Rhodes University and we celebrated with them. Dr Mabizela is community-orientated and we take this opportunity to congratulate Dr Mabizela. It is also then important to highlight Graeme College’s special days. With Founders’ Weekend next week, we need to acknowledge the pivotal role that the Old Graemians play at Graeme College. Founders’ Day gives us the opportunity to reflect on the history of Graeme College. During the various activities held over this weekend, we reflect on our school history, pay our respects to those who have gone before us and remember people who played a role at the school. As a public school, we belong to the community and would like every Old Boy to feel that they are a valued part of that community. We would also like the current community to realise that we strive to provide an academic curriculum which develops a broad knowledge base and understanding, which prepares boys for life and allows us to live up to our mission statement “to develop all to their full potential”. This is enhanced by balancing the academic curriculum with a diverse co-curricular and extra-curricular programme, which further develops skills and ensures personal development by allowing boys to exemplify the school’s motto Virtute et Opera. Graeme College is privileged to be celebrating its 142nd birthday this year. What is evident is that this small school has maintained its ethos and has, despite numerous challenges, upgraded its standards. The school remains close to the hearts of all the children that study here and all the staff who teach here. Our “boys” stand for what is good in our country: manners, fellowship, sportsmanship, respect, unity and friendship. Graeme College continues to stand out as a beacon of excellence and a model of what is good and great in the South African education system, a model that can match any in the world. Our duty is to remain steadfast and to ensure that this excellence is maintained, nurtured and grown. We endeavour to do this so that these boys, too, will one day be able to be proud Old Graemians. You seldom meet an Old Graemian who is not incredibly proud of, and thankful to, his old school. Many old boys have, over recent years, contributed in different forms to their alma mater; contributions for which we are eternally grateful. Having established the importance of Founders’ Weekend, it is my wish that the weekend provides a platform for Old Graemians to meet old friends and to enter into the spirit of all that is Graeme College. Parent are reminded that the full settlement of annual school fees is due on or before the first day of the school year, or entrance into school. Should parents wish to make monthly payments, a written request must be submitted to the School Bursar in January of each year [R2 000 on first day of first term and balance in 10 [ten] equal monthly installments, February - November]. Both parents are jointly and severally responsible for fees. Non-payment of accounts will be dealt with in accordance with School policy. References on fee payments Graeme College continues to receive payments with the incorrect references (i.e. CJG10 and E599). We are unable to allocate these payments to the correct account. Please use your son’s initial & surname and reason for payment (e.g. fees, water polo tour, etc.). If either of the payments mentioned above belong to you, please contact Mrs Bradfield ([email protected]). FATHERS’ & SONS’ CAMP What a huge success! Two hundred and thirty-five fathers and sons camped on Somerset Field on Friday night. The boys had so much fun, playing squash until 02h00, enjoying the jumping castles, playing cricket and hand-tennis, enjoying the boerewors and bacon and egg rolls, etc. The evening was also enjoyed by the dads as they bonded with their sons while enjoying the company of fellow dads. Thank you to all dads who sacrificed Friday night and to those who assisted and contributed towards the camp. We could not envision an idea like this, or have the camp run smoothly, without the support of the dads. We look forward to the next annual Fathers’ and Sons’ Camp!
