Masdar City is a planned Net Zero Energy city in the United Arab Emirates. It has a construction budget of $18 billion, and the first phase opened in 2010. The vison for this city is to create a sustainable city providing the highest quality of life with the lowest environmental footprint. The development has established measurable goals that will position the city at the forefront of intelligent resource utilization and sustainable urban development. The temperature in the streets is generally 15 degrees C cooler than the surrounding desert, due to the chimney effect of the structures. The centerpiece of the development is Masdar Headquarters facility, a 1.4 million square foot mixed use facility that is designed to move beyond carbon neutrality to generate 3 percent more energy that is needed to operate the building. The original design of the headquarters building was a competition between 16 design firms, with ESD in Chicago winning the lead MEP and Technology engineering portion of the design. In the opening session of the Net Zero Energy Conference, you will hear from the lead mechanical engineer on the project and the challenges that such an ambitious project entails. Eco-Science Advanced Technology Manufacturing Research Park A Net Zero Energy and Water Office Park Presenter: Rick Cantwell, P.E., President & CEO of ODELL International, LLC Bruce Haxton, AIA, LEED AP, Project Team Leader for The NZ4 Global Alliance Team The Eco-Science / Advanced Technology Manufacturing Research Park of the future can be developed in Southeast U.S. to achieve three objects: 1) Sustainable economy, 2) Sustainable education, and 3) Sustainable environments. This concept defines the major concepts that govern the design of the “Life Style Science Park”, either a new stand alone STP, or an existing urban area redesigned into a new Technology HUB / Eco-Science / Advanced Technology Manufacturing Research Park. Key positive factors for developing this prototype in the US Southeast: 1) Relative ease of developing a large research and manufacturing facility design within a centrally planned were similar success has been demonstrated; i.e. Research Triangle Park, 2) Create a net zero energy and water; closed loop design prototype for sustainable environment, education, and economy, 3) Provide for a STEM solution that is environmentally friendly, 4) Build on the a great economy and demonstrate how an advanced research / manufacturing facility can provide regional stimulus, 5) Promote renewable energy solutions that achieve a “net zero energy and water” solution thereby fostering future progressive science solutions, and 6) Provide a cutting edge example of closed loop design that will become a model for the entire country. ENERGY TRACK UNCC Solar Decathlon Entry – It’s All about the Energy! Presenter: Preston Finnie, Optima Engineering The Department of Energy Solar Decathlon Competition is the preeminent international showcase for netzero building design, and emerging technology. This presentation will be comprised of an overview of the nature of the competition, as well as an in-depth case study of the past competitor house, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte's 2013 Solar Decathlon Competition House: Urban Eden. Presented in this case study will be the design philosophy, architecture, and engineering of the respective entrants, as well as a retrospective analysis of competition performance, and lessons learned. Net Zero Energy Buildings – Financial Aspects: Can You Afford Not to go NZE? Presenter: Rick Green, Financial Capacity at FirstFloor K-12 Solutions Perhaps you have a client who has asked about the viability of net zero energy buildings or whether they can afford a net zero energy building. This session will address topics relating to financial aspects of net zero energy buildings. We will examine the first cost versus total cost of ownership of this type of building including life cycle cost. Additionally, we will discuss what is different or unique about net zero buildings and lastly share with you a case study of a net zero building that is currently in operation. ENERGY TRACK True Net Zero Energy Buildings – An Off Grid Residence Presenter: Bob Kingery, Co-Founder & President of Southern Energy Management One of the problems with a Net Zero Energy building is proving that the building actually met the qualifications after a year of operation: that it produced as much energy as it consumes. One way to avoid that issue is to not ever connect the building to the electrical grid. If you don’t use any utility energy, then you cannot help but be Net Zero Energy! In this session, we will learn about the real pros and cons of having a building off grid by investigating a real life case of a home that is off grid, located in the Triangle area of North Carolina. Distributed Generation – A Utility’s Perspective Presenter: Zachary Kunzar, Duke Energy Renewable Generation Development Group You hear a lot today about Distributed Energy Generation and how it will impact the utility grid. In this session you will learn about what Duke Energy is investigating concerning distributed generation, how it will impact the reliability of the grid, and how it will impact customers. Does Distributed Generation make a neighborhood more resilient and more self-contained, or does it have drawbacks? As we journey towards Net Zero Energy Buildings, the electrical utility’s role becomes even more crucial than before as NZE Buildings utilize the electric grid for their energy storage. Learn how the largest electrical utility in the country wants to be a part of the solution. CASE STUDY Wells Fargo - Net Zero Energy Branch Bank Presenter: Curt Radkin, Wells Fargo You may think that Net Zero Energy Buildings are only for the radical tree huggers in the world, but in this case study we will learn about a recent branch bank in Florida that Wells Fargo designed and built. It has been open less than 4 months, but learn about the challenges during the design, construction, and operation of a commercial building which must be reliable and operate economically in a hot and humid environment. Net Zero Energy, Waste and Water – A Haitian Medical Clinic Presenter: Sabine Guerrier, MBA/MHA, CSM Founder & President of Haitian Heritage and Friends of Haiti While Net Zero Energy is a goal we strive for in the US, in other countries it becomes a necessity. In Haiti, there is no reliable power grid, and in the rural areas there is no water or sewer system. In this case study, we will look at a medical clinic being designed and built (in shipping containers) here in North Carolina, and then being shipped and reassembled in rural northern Haiti. All water must be purified on site from a well and all energy will be from solar PV, utilizing battery storage so that the clinic can operate year round. The systems must be robust, easy to maintain (no maintenance personnel) and inexpensive: a very challenging trio. CASE STUDY Sandy Grove Middle School - Net Positive Energy School Presenter: Robbie Ferris, CEO & President of SfL+a Architects and FirstFloor K-12 Solutions Sandy Grove Middle School in Hoke County, NC is the nation’s first energy-positive, leased public school – delivered through a public-private partnership. As architects and developers, we are cognizant of the increased focus on sustainable design to protect the environment; however, it is important to provide financial benefits to building owners, as well as enhance students learning and overall wellbeing. By delivering this project through public-private partnership, the project and partners were able to take advantage of a variety of tax credits, private sector financing, and innovative design and construction techniques, that will offset the infrastructure costs for the renewable energy features, saving the County significant amounts of money over the life of the building. Learn about the challenges of designing and operating a NZE school. Cramerton Village - A Net Zero Energy Community Presenter: Nick Parker, President of Amicus Engineering If you asked most people in the design community these days what would be the most ambitious type of building to design and build, they would probably respond with “Net Zero Energy”. In this session, you will learn about an entire community in North Carolina whose goal is to be Net Zero Energy. The community will consist of single family homes, apartments, retail, restaurants, commercial office space, classroom/lab space, as well as light industrial buildings and a large clubhouse. This is not your normal Net Zero Energy challenge: this is Net Zero Energy on steroids! Learn about this 6 year journey from the developer and why he feels that this is so important for society. CASE STUDY GSA Federal Office Building, Miramar, FL Presenter: Mark Sexton, FAIA, LEED AP This new 375,000 square foot Federal Office Building for the GSA Design Excellence program is designed in pursuit of the 2030 Zero Environmental Footprint project goal, achieved by a design process that rigorously follows three consecutive objectives which build upon each other: reduction of energy & resources consumption, use of high performance building envelope & systems, and harvesting of renewable energy sources on-site. The office building consists of two narrow bars with dynamically articulated façades which respond to sun angles, views from the interior, and subtle reflections of the surrounding sky and wetlands. Exterior perforated sun screens are deployed at the south-facing sides to shield solar gain before it enters the building. Careful siting within the restored wetlands create courtyards to regularily engage with the natural restored habitat. This session will take place from 2:45 – 3:45. HVAC TRACK Geothermal Heat Pump Systems – Using the Earth to Drive Efficiency! Presenter: Steven Daley, P.E., LEED AP BD+C, Managing Principal at Optima Engineering Most people have heard of Geothermal Systems, but there is a lot of confusion between the HVAC use and using the earth as a producer of energy. In this session, we will learn what a Geothermal Heat Pump System is, how it works, and when you should use such a system and why. They are generally more efficient than most other types of HVAC systems, but they are not always the best solution. We will look at ways to modify geothermal systems for new and existing buildings to get the efficiency of geothermal with the results you want for your building type. Net Zero Energy Buildings Start with Building Energy Simulations Presenter: Shane Nault, P.E., CEM, CCP, CxA, LEED AP BD+C President of Building EnergetiCx, PLLC Net Zero Energy Buildings can be challenging, but they are achievable with the proper planning and execution. Part of that planning begins with understanding a building’s energy performance to assist with the decision making process during the early design phases. The key to this process is developing a model of the building to perform building energy simulations. This presentation will define building energy simulations and outline the different types, which include data driven and future simulations. This presentation will also provide an overview of the building energy simulation tools that are available. Understanding the building energy simulation process can be beneficial to the project team when trying to achieve a NZEB and how it relates to the LEED® rating system. HVAC TRACK Chilled Beams – Do They Work in the South? Presenter: James Currie, P.E., LEED AP BD+C, Vice-President at McCracken Lopez Engineering Many of you have heard of Chilled Beams and how efficient they are in cooling a building. But if you ask most mechanical engineers in the SouthEast, they will say to run away from such technologies unless you are trying to create a rain forest in your building. In this session, we will learn how to make chilled beams work in our climate and look at an example of a large classroom and lab building at UNC Charlotte. We will investigate the pros and cons of such systems, as well as the anticipated efficiencies of the HVAC system with chilled beams and when the technology might be applicable to your building. Specifying Integrated Automation for Zero Net Energy Buildings Presenter: Allan Evora, CMVP, President of Affinity Automation Zero Net Energy (ZNE) Buildings must be designed collaboratively using a “whole systems” approach recognizing that the building and its systems are interdependent. This statement is especially true when designing controls, measurement and verification. The traditional methods of specifying controls, measurement and verification do not adequately address the unique requirements of ZNE, such as diverse systems and control sequences, optimization, and continuous commissioning. This presentation will go over recommended best practices in specifying integrated automation for ZNE buildings.
