#OPENING
ARCOmadrid is maintaining its space for emerging projects and artists with its themed
section entitled #Opening. Curators Luiza Teixeira de Freitas (Portugal/United
Kingdom) and Chris Sharp (Mexico) have selected 28 galleries from the Americas
and Europe that have been around for less than seven years to offer a view of the
newest additions to the art scene.

This year’s opening could be characterized by a few key terms: precision, diversity and
discovery. We have worked very closely with galleries from all over Europe, Latin
America and North America in order to create the most exciting edition of Opening
possible. The idea has been to invite specific artists with whom we already have
working relationships or solicit proposals from galleries consisting of one or two-person
presentations. We felt that this combination of familiarity and precision would make for
a particularly strong section, in which the clarity and coherence of each and every
project would be mutually beneficial for everyone involved, artists, gallerists, and the
general public included. What is more, in keeping with one of the goals of Opening,
which is to introduce emerging and established artists to a new public, we feel that
such focused presentations aid in the possibility of discovery.
For rather than seeing a single work by an artist, the public is able to see a more ample
and informative presentation and get a better sense of a given artist’s practice. To this
end, solo presentations include: the Colombian, London-based artist Oscar Murillo with
the London gallery Carlos Ishikawa, the Mexican, Mexcio City-based artist Martin Soto
Climent with New York gallery Clifton Benevento, the Lativian, Dusseldorf-based artist
Ola Vasiljeva with the Paris gallery Antoine Levi, the German, Berlin-based artist Sinta
Werner with the Berlin gallery Alexander Levy, the Argentine, Mexico City-based artist
Ramiro Chaves the Mexican gallery Yautepec, the Swedish, Malmo-based artist
Alexander Gutke with the Stockholm gallery Belenius/Nordenhake, and the English,
London-based artist Celia Hampton with the gallery Southard Reid, among others.
Meanwhile, virtually the rest of the almost thirty participating galleries will be offering
focused two-person presentations. We are thrilled to see pairings such as the French
artist Jonathan Binet and the English artist Jessica Warboys offered by the Paris gallery
Gaudel de Stampa, Italian artists such as Riccardo Baruzzi and Franco Vaccari with the
Bologna gallery P420, Polish artists Aleksandra Waliszewska and Angelika Markul by
the Warsaw gallery Leto, French artists Gyan Panchal and Laura Lamiel with the Paris
gallery Marcelle Alix, the Argentine artist Martin Vitaliti and the Basque artist Sergio
Prego with the Barcelona gallery EtHall, and the Mexican artist Ulises Carrión and the
Argentine José Vera Matos with the Buenos Aires gallery Document Art.

Finally, while Opening is not organized according to a specific theme, the section is
nevertheless very curated, not only in terms of placement and the relationship certain
both will have to one another, but also in terms of tendencies. For instance, if one
spends a bit of time in the section, one will be to pick up on everything from the latest
developments in concrete poetry to the most recent innovations in the expanded field of
painting, among other things. As such, the sense of discovery that will accompany
Opening will be manifold. Mindful of some of the pitfalls and inconveniences of art
fairs, we believe that, given the right rhythm and pace, they can be still be very
productive and beneficial spaces of dialogue, discovery and circulation, and we have
sought to curate Opening so to as valorize the benefits of such a space as much as
possible.
CURATORS
Luiza Teixeira de Freitas is an independent curator working between London and
Lisbon. She works as curator/advisor to private collections and on her own
independent projects. In the past she has worked as Development Organiser for
Chisenhale Gallery in London (2011-13); developing projects with Alexander and
Bonin, NY (2006-12). She was curatorial assistant for the Marrakech Biennial 'Works and
Places’ (2009) and curatorial intern at Tate Modern (2008) working with exhibitions
such as: Cildo Meireles, Cy Twombly and 9 Scripts from a Nation at War.
Recent exhibitions include: ‘Apestraction' - Damián Ortega at the Freud Museum
(London, 2013); 'In Lines and Realignments' at Simon Lee Gallery (London, 2013); 'A
Man is Walking down the street' at Cristina Guerra (Lisbon, 2012); 'The Exact Weight of
Lightness' (Madrid, 2012); 'P¹s Correspondence' at Selma Feriani (London, 2012); 'Like
Tears in Rain' at Palácio das Artes (Porto, 2010); 'The Moon is an Arrant Thief' at the
David Roberts Art Foundation(London, 2010). She is also actively involved with artists’
books and independent publishing projects.
Chris Sharp is a writer and independent curator currently based in Mexico City, where
he runs, with the artist Martin Soto Climent, the project space, Lulu. He is editor-atlarge of Kaleidoscope magazine, a contributing editor of Art Review, and he is currently
preparing exhibitions for Salzburg Kunstverein, Salzburg (2014); La Fondazione
Giuliani, Rome (2014), and Le Crédac, Ivry, France (2014), among others. He will also be
co-curating with Gianni Jetzer the 12th Swiss Sculpture Exhibition in Biel/Bienne,
Switzerland (2014).
As Tables Are Shelves
Next to the #Opening section is As Tables Are Shelves, a section curated by Luiza
Teixeira de Freitas that focuses on the publishing profession. From 25 to 28 February, a
select group of booksellers, artists, publishers and book producers from various
countries will showcase a number of publications in various formats to provide a
platform to share ideas and knowledge. The project will help forge important ties
between galleries, artists, visitors, curators and publishers, and will increase the chances
to develop artist publications in an art context.
