4th Sunday of Lent
Saint John Eudes
March 15, 2015
Father Gérard’s Corner
Though this Sunday is nicknamed Laetare (“Rejoice”) the first reading doesn’t begin very joyfully: “All
the princes of Judah, the priests, and the people added infidelity to infidelity, practicing all the abominations
of the nations and polluting the Lord’s temple. . . They mocked the messengers of God, despised his
warnings, and scoffed at his prophets, until the anger of the Lord against his people was so inflamed
that there was no remedy” (2 Chronicles 36:14, 16). Destruction of city and temple follow, mass
executions, exile. But then, when least expected, through the least likely person (a pagan king)
God renews the covenant.
That ancient example of unmerited mercy prompts Paul to rejoice that “God, who is rich in mercy, even when we were
dead in our transgressions, brought us to life in Christ.” But Paul cautions: “this is not from you; it is the gift of God . . . so
no one may boast.” Nor may we judge! A difficult lesson for our judgmental hearts. Yet Paul repeats twice, “by grace you
have been saved.” Thus, “we are [God’s] handiwork”—every one of us!
Rejoice indeed! “God so loved the world he gave his only Son, that everyone who believes in [Jesus] . . . might have
eternal life.” This Good News gets even better: “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world,
but that the world might be saved through him.” Imagine the rejoicing in our little corner of the world, if we, loved and
forgiven sinners, went forth from this assembly as ambassadors of God’s universal and unconditional love in Christ.
Fr. Gérard
J.S. Paluch
PRAYER OF THE WEEK
O God of all grace,
we are your handiwork.
Strengthen us for the good works
that you have prepared for us,
and grant all these our prayers
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
To whom is God sending me this week as an
“ambassador of unconditional love”? That is, who
is the least likely person for me to reach out to?
CHRISM MASS
We are once again providing a bus to the Cathedral
for the Chrism Mass on March 30th. If you have never
attended this Mass, this would be a great opportunity for
you to do so without the hassle of driving through traffic
and looking for parking once you’re there. The bus will
leave the Mason Parking Lot at 4pm and return between
9:30pm and 10pm. Please plan on bringing something to
eat on the bus, as the lines will be long at the deli at the
cathedral.
Space is very limited so if you are interested in joining
us, please call the parish office as soon as possible to
sign-up. As in previous years, we are asking for a $10
donation per person to cover some of the expense. All
monies will be taken at the time of boarding; please have
exact amount.
POPE FRANCIS’ INTENTIONS FOR MARCH
Universal: That those involved in scientific research may
serve the well-being of the whole human person.
Evangelization: That the unique contribution of women
to the life of the Church may be recognized always.

DID YOU KNOW?
This consecration, the declaration of fealty to Mary, the
Queen of the Legion, is called the Acies. This is the great
central annual function of the Legion, and therefore, all
active and auxiliary members are encouraged to attend
this event. Please wear something white if you have it: a
shirt for men or a dress for women. If you are interested
in becoming a Legionary, please join us as well. Please
bring a flower stem for an offering. For questions, please
call Teddy Haftl at 818-449-3797.
Child abduction: taking action. . .
A recent study of the National Center for
Missing & Exploited Children® revealed
that 83% of children who escaped their
would-be abductors kicked, yelled, and
pulled away to escape. Teach your child
these and other abduction prevention skills, such as:
Asking for permission before changing plans; asking for
permission before approaching or getting into vehicles
with anyone; recognizing the tricks would-be abductors
use, such as offering rides or asking for help; telling a
trusted adult whenever anything or anyone makes them
uncomfortable. When it comes to keeping your child safe,
YOU are your child’s best resource. The more you know
about abduction prevention, the better protected your
child will be. Use your knowledge to make conversations
about personal safety a regular part of your family’s routine.

WHY NOT PHYSICIAN ASSISTED SUICIDE?
SB 128 would legalize physician-assisted suicide in CA. Pope Francis reminds us, “The biblical
commandment to honor our parents reminds us in a broader sense of our duty to honor all elderly
people." Take action now to protect the elderly and those with disabilities. Visit: archla.org/SB128
to learn more, contact your legislator, and get involved.
Why shouldn't assisted suicide be legalized?
Legalized assisted suicide contradicts the primary purpose of law, to protect our weakest members. It corrupts
the medical profession, whose ethical code calls physicians to serve life and never to kill. The voiceless or
marginalized in our society—the poor, the frail elderly, racial minorities, millions of people who lack health
insurance—would be the first to feel “pressured” to kill themselves.
What about competent, terminally ill people who say they want assisted suicide?
Suicidal wishes among any members of our society should be treated with counseling and suicide prevention, the
terminally ill included. When their pain, depression and other problems are addressed, there is generally no more
talk of suicide. If we respond to the terminally ill by offering them lethal drugs, we have made our own tragic
choice as a society that some people’s lives do not matter.
What about the high cost of healthcare?
Healthcare can be expensive. The answer is better care, not encouraging death. Once assisted suicide is a legal option, and far less expensive than most treatments, the temptation will be great to label patients with lingering illnesses as economic liabilities. Will patients be coerced to choose death to keep costs down? The answer is yes!
Why are people with disabilities worried about assisted suicide?
The disabled experience prejudicial attitudes on the part of able-bodied people, including physicians, who incorrectly assume they have little or no “quality of life.” Such prejudices could easily lead families, physicians
and society to encourage death for people who are depressed and emotionally vulnerable as they adjust to life with
a serious illness or disability. In this instance, how can we say suicide is a “free choice”?
Doesn’t assisted suicide allow people to die when they choose, surrounded by family?
Many patients given a prognosis of dying within 6 months live much longer. It is not an exact science. SB 128 does not
require patients to inform their families of their suicidal wishes when obtaining the overdose medication.
There is no requirement for witnesses or assistance while taking the medication and dying, so many people
end up dying alone.
Is the Catholic Church alone in opposing the legalization of assisted suicide?
No, we join with senior groups, advocates for the elderly and disabled, medical experts, suicide-prevention
professionals and a long list of organizations that are all part of Californians Against Assisted Suicide.
What is the view of the medical profession?
The American Medical Association holds that “physician-assisted suicide is fundamentally incompatible
with the physician's role as healer.” The AMA, along with the American Nurses Association, American Psychiatric Association and dozens of other medical groups, have urged the Supreme Court to uphold laws against
assisted suicide, arguing that the power to assist in taking patients’ lives is “a power that most health care
professionals do not want and could not control.”
What can I do to stop Physician-Assisted Suicide?
First, find out more about assisted suicide and its effects on our families and our culture at
noassistedsuicideca.org. Then, stand up for the lives of our frail elderly and infirm by encouraging your legislators to
vote NO on physician-assisted suicide. Visit archla.org/sb128 to find your legislator and more today.
