GÉRARD’S CORNER Today’s scriptures present the Trinity less as a doctrine and more as the revelation of God’s deepening personal relationship with us. (For a doctrinal summary, see the Preface of the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity.) In the Old Testament, Moses marvels at God’s initiative and intimacy: “Did anything so great ever happen before? Did a people ever hear God’s voice and live? Did any god ever take a nation for himself?” For Paul, the Spirit of adoption infinitely deepens that intimacy. Deuteronomy’s “Lord your God” becomes our “Abba, Father,” and we “children, heirs of God, joint heirs with Christ.” The “Great Commission” begins by presenting the not-so-great church. Far from glossing over the disciples’ weakness, Matthew almost emphasizes it: “The eleven disciples went to Galilee.” There used to be twelve. But how disappointing even this “faithful remnant:” “when they saw Jesus, they worshiped, but they doubted.” Unlike Sinai and Tabor, the “Mountain of the Great Commission” remains nameless, not a pilgrimage destination but a place of departure. Jesus’ church must be forever (1) on the move—“Go,” (2) with work to do—“make disciples,” (3) far from the community’s place of origin—“of all nations,” (4) blending worship—“baptizing”—with witnessing—“teaching” (5) boldly and bravely—not simply what worldly powers sense as “common ground” but the gospel’s counter-cultural truths—“all I have commanded you.” But Matthew matches daunting challenge with comforting assurance. Matthew’s Gospel began with Advent’s angel naming Jesus “Emmanuel, God-with-us,” and Jesus’ last words promise, “I am with you always.” Father Gérard, CJM J.S. Paluch PRAYER OF THE WEEK Almighty God, through your Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Spirit we have been redeemed and made your own people. Hear our prayer of thanks today, and graciously grant these petitions that we bring to you, who live and reign for ever and ever. POPE FRANCIS’ INTENTIONS FOR MAY Universal: That, rejecting the culture of indifference, we may care for our neighbors who suffer, especially the sick and the poor. Evangelization: That Mary's intercession may help Christians in secularized cultures be ready to proclaim Jesus. BAPTISMS Spanish: 1st Saturday of the month at 12:00 p.m. English: 3rd Saturday of the month at 12:00 p.m. By appointment: Please call or visit the Parish Office. Baptism Seminar Classes are held the 3rd Sunday of every month In Room A/B of Grill Hall from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. (No need to pre-register) Any Questions? Email: [email protected] For those baptizing at another parish and taking the class here, the fee is $25 per person. QUESTION OF THE WEEK Is my prayer formal and formulaic only, or personal and intimate as Jesus with his Abba? How might I recover or deepen the warmth of a prayerful relationship with God?
