Year of Consecrated Life
FR. GÉRARD’S CORNER
Another Advent dawns with the joyful
expectation that marks each new liturgical
year’s beginning. Meanwhile, “tidings of
comfort and joy” have already kindled
warm anticipation in the hearts of those for
whom Advent and Christmas are simply
“the holiday season.” But this Advent features another
beginning, unique to this specific moment in history and
meant to reach beyond our community to embrace and
gladden everyone, believer and non-believer alike.
Next week, Pope Francis inaugurates a Jubilee Year of
Mercy. Fulfilling his ministry of leadership as Peter in the
Church, Pope Francis senses a historical moment that
uniquely challenges Christians to contemplate more
profoundly and live more concretely the mystery of God’s
mercy. For God’s steadfast, abiding, compassionate,
forgiving love—mercy—is the bridge that connects God
and the human family, declares Pope Francis. Mercy
opens our hearts to the hope of being loved forever
despite our sinfulness, and to the recognition of others,
especially society’s least loved and most vulnerable, as
brothers and sisters entrusted to our care.
Fittingly, this Advent’s scriptures open with Jeremiah
proclaiming God’s promise of justice and security for
people oppressed and war-weary. Paul bids Christians
increase and abound in love for one another and for all.
Finally, after naming terrifying natural cataclysms (and
we might add human terrorism), Jesus warns us to avoid
both self-centered diversions and self-consuming anxieties.
Instead, disciples should confidently anticipate Jesus’
coming with redeeming mercy, and prayerfully attend to
Jesus’ presence among us already in those who need
God’s mercy and our care.

DID YOU KNOW?
Who should report child abuse . . . .?
Priests, deacons, school faculty and
administrators and other staff members
in our parishes and schools have been
designated as mandated reporters under
California law. When one of these persons
receives information leading to a “reasonable suspicion”
that a child is being abused or neglected, he or she must
make a report to the appropriate child protection or law
enforcement agency. However, every adult has a moral
responsibility to report suspected child abuse.

LAUDATO SI:
ON CARE OF OUR COMMON HOME
The language of care inspires us as human beings and certainly as people of faith: we care for our children,
our parents, our friends, even those who are needy. Now our Holy Father ask us to CARE for our planet,
our home. Join us for a presentation on a few of the main themes of Pope Francis’ encyclical and some
practical steps about what we can do.
Jack Jezreel, well-known speaker and founder of JustFaith, will undoubtedly be a thoughtful presenter and
lead us in a lively discussion. Cost of the lunch is $6 and includes dessert. To reserve your seat, contact
Mary Ann Cummins Prager at [email protected] or at (818) 294-8806 by December 10th.
Tickets also available in the parish office of St. John Eudes.
Our speaker, SEAN KROETZ, a long time SJE parishioner, will bring you into his world a nightmarish
world of dealing with the dreaded disease of PROSTATE CANCER.
The male population is starving for the truth about this topic. However, there will be no “chicken
soup” on this menu, just a gut-wrenching reality check. It’s time to reveal the well kept “dirty little
secret” about prostate cancer. This is one show that you can’t afford to miss. It will be a evening
This is
not a men’s only club. This will be painfully personal talk with adult themes for which the speaker
requests that children or teens not be allowed at this talk. Please honor this request.
Parents that attend will receive a FREE DRESS pass for their children and TWO service hours for
the family.
(Please be on time as there will be a small production crew filming and we would like to avoid any disruptions, Thank you!!)
