Meistersinger Vocal Competition
2015
A featured event of AIMS IN GRAZ, the Meistersinger Vocal Competition is open to all full-time AIMS
singers. The Preliminary judging is Saturday, August 1, 2015: a maximum of 24 Semi-finalists will be
named. Semi-Final judging is Sunday, August 2: eight Finalists and two Alternates will be named. The
eight Finalists will sing before a panel of judges at the Meistersinger Vocal Competition Concert, the
last concert of AIMS IN GRAZ. The two alternates also will perform at the concert.
First, Second, Third and Fourth Place prizes and four Honorable Mention awards are given. Cash
awards for finalists and alternates total about $4500. The audience also votes for its choice and a
valuable gold “Wiener Philharmoniker” coin is presented to the “Audience Favorite.”
COMPETITION RULES
1. Only full-time AIMS IN GRAZ participants with all AIMS fees paid in full are eligible.
2. Submit your application form and non-refundable entry fee to the Bursar between
18:00 - 19:00 on Tuesday, July 28. Deadline is 19:00 on Tuesday, July 28, 2015.
3. The application form must have the approval signatures of the singer’s assigned AIMS
Voice Teacher and Vocal Coach.
4. The singer is responsible for selecting a pianist from the AIMS Staff Pianists. The
selected pianist must also sign and print his/her name on the application form.
REPERTOIRE
 There are no restrictions on what aria is presented at the Preliminary and Semi-Finals, but it
should be material with orchestration in the AIMS Orchestra Library. This list can found on the
Participants area of the website under “Music” (Orchestra Library List & Aria Database). After
the Finalists are announced, the competition arias to be performed will be chosen from this list.
 You will sing one aria of your choice in each round. (Three arias must be listed on the
Application Form). You may be asked by the judges to sing a portion of an additional selection
at the Semi-Final round.
 Time limits: Preliminary – 5 minutes; Semi-Final – 7 minutes.
APPLICATION FORMS will be available at the School and Heim INFO DESKS.
ENTRY FEE is US $50 or Euro 40. This fee is non-refundable.
PIANISTS Singers will select their pianist from the AIMS Staff Pianists will be responsible for
contacting him/her, having the application form signed, and scheduling rehearsals.
JUDGING
1. Preliminary judges will be a panel of AIMS Faculty members.
2. Semi-Final judges (non-AIMS members) will be announced.
3. A panel of up to five judges (non-AIMS members) will be named for the Finals;
none will have judged earlier rounds of the competition.
2015 DATES
1. Preliminaries - Saturday, August 1, 2015. Twenty-four semi-finalists will be named.
2. Semi-Finals - Sunday, August 2, 2015. Eight Finalists and two alternates will be named.
3. Mandatory meeting - Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at 9:00am (1st floor brown kitchen). Aria titles
are due at this meeting.
4. Finalists and Alternates will sing one aria at the Meistersinger Vocal Competition on Thursday,
August 13, 2015. Prizes / Awards will be announced at the close of the concert.
5. Cash awards will be distributed by the AIMS Bursar (in Euros or as a US $ check) on Friday,
August 14 from 10:00 – 12:00.
