No fewer than 107 medals were handed out at our most recent club championships
held at Alton on Saturday 25th April. Swimmers competed in 41 events and
produced 244 PBs. All our medallists are listed inside this issue and full results are,
as always, on the website. Our cover photographs feature three champions: Rosie
Eades (top left) triumphed in the Age 8/Under Butterfly and Age 8 Freestyle; Lucy
Steiner was victorious in the Age 11 Freestyle, Butterfly and Backstroke; and Thomas Duddridge made a clean sweep in the Age 8/Under category and Age 8 Freestyle.
A message from our Chairman
Welcome to the spring edition of the club
newsletter and as usual it’s full of great
information and an update on the superb
results we have achieved this year. I’m
particularly proud of our younger
swimmers who achieved so much at the
recent Club Championships. As parents
we all see the progress our children are
making as they grow through the club and
it’s great to see the next crop of swimmers
doing so well.
Managing and running a growing club like Alton is not without its challenges,
one of which is to ensure we have the right checks and balances in place and we
do this through our Swim 21 accreditation. I’m pleased to report that following a
vigorous assessment process we have been successful in its application which
enables us to move the club forward over the next two years. My personal
thanks go to Nick Sampson and the rest of the team who pulled the submission
together.
Sticking with the subject of governance it’s great to see so many
parents completing the ASA Team managers and Timekeepers courses which
enable us to support galas in an official capacity - we asked for your help and the
parents answered the “call to arms”, so well done to all those involved.
One final thing before I sign off for the summer is to highlight the
Annual Awards Evening and Hog Roast on Friday the 10th of July at Alton
Rugby Club. This is the club’s main social event of the year and is a celebration
of everyone’s achievements over the last 12 months, therefore please come along
and support this superb evening and I will guarantee a fantastic night (and super weather) - I look forward to seeing you all on the 10th of July. Have a great
summer.

ASA courses completed
In the last Newsletter we had a column titled Your club needs you in which
we explained the need for more input from parents to meet the challenges
ahead. Since then the club has run two courses for parents and club officials.
In response to the new ASA rules regarding licensing, the club also ran a
Timekeepers’ course to increase the number of qualified timekeepers available
for meets and in particular our club championships.
The first module of a Team Managers’ training course was led by two ASAregistered presenters, Liz Rowley and Rosa Gallop. The aim of the course was
to give participants the confidence and knowledge to manage a swim team at
club level and to:
The course was run by Pam Mattos from Rushmoor Royals and consisted of a
classroom-based presentation followed by a practical session. The practical
took place in Churchers’ pool during the normal Monday night session and
Balazs organised some 50m time-trials using the available swimmers with
Shaun acting as starter. As well as the volunteers there were mentors in each
lane drawn from the club’s list of qualified ASA officials: Louise Fletcher,
David Kember, Alison Ellington, Chris Raeside, Michelle Dominy and Gwen
Clifford.


Michelle is organising the second module soon which focuses on overseas
trips.
Coach’s Corner

The successful candidates were Dee Druce, Hannah Druce, Rod Hamilton, Ian
Jackson, Claire Pengilley, Tracey Riches, Karen Roberson, Tanya Spencer,
Alison Williams and Amanda Williams, plus four trainee Level 1 Judges in Jeff
Ellington, Sarah George, Deborah Jackson and Neil Medley.
Thanks to everyone who participated in the courses, whether organising,
presenting, mentoring or volunteering. It was a great response to the appeal
for help which puts the club in a much stronger position.

I would like to wish good luck to Rob who has joined
our senior coaching team. This gives us a great
opportunity to cover all the sessions with an experienced senior coach and also gives me an opportunity
to visit all those sessions from time to time where I
am not normally teaching.
Three swimmers qualified for the Scottish National
Age Group Championship held in Aberdeen in early
April. All three did a great job. Ella Hamilton came 3rd
in the 200 breaststroke so she collected her first
national medal and she also qualified for the final in
every event coming 4th or 5th. Naomi Van Dongen
qualified for the final in 50 breaststroke and came an
impressive 5th with a long course open club record
and Rory got a PB in his 50 fly too. All the races took
place in a great atmosphere with lots of noise and
excitement and it was good that friends and family
could watch finals on a live video stream.
We had a very successful County Champs this
year. The swimmers collected ten county titles,
several medals and achieved a huge number of
club records. I am very proud of all our swimmers
who competed in individual and relay events.
Alton swimmers participated in three open meets in
April. Rushmoor and Crawley were both level 1 meets.
Swimmers got some good results but at this time of
year we just use these meets for training and gaining
more experience in a 50 metre pool. The third meet
was a level 3 meet in Haslemere and I am pretty
sure we had the most entries to an open meet since
I started at Alton. We have had over 30 entries
from Dolphins, Sharks and Junior County groups. I
was very impressed with that.
Unfortunately I couldn’t take part at the 25m Club
Champs but I received lots of positive feedback
from coaches and parents so thank you to Louise,
the committee and parents for organising a great
event for our younger swimmers.
Thirteen(!) swimmers reached A or B qualification
times for the South East Regional Championships
this year. Unfortunately not everybody could enter
and some swimmers got rejected with B qualification times so in the end we have eight swimmers
(including our new member from Wales) entered
and accepted. There are several events where our
swimmers are quite high up in the rankings so I am
expecting a good amount of finals and some medals
too. I am really looking forward to the next few
weekends.
25m Club Championships
The 25m Club Championships are always a
special occasion as we get to see many of
our younger swimmers and future stars
swimming competitively, often for the first
time. Saturday 25th April saw this year’s
instalment of the splash ‘n’ dash featuring
swimmers from the Goldfish, Piranhas,
Stingrays and Dolphins teaching groups.

Swimmers’ Corner
Ella Hamilton writes: As part of the newsletter, I would like to
introduce a new section for you, the swimmers at the club. It can
be on any subject, such as your idol, your ambitions, or just a bit
about yourself and why you swim. I’ll start this off with a section
on my idol. I’ll then pass it on to my chosen swimmer, and
challenge them to write something. Can all pieces please be
emailed to [email protected] and it will be
added to the latest edition of the Alton newsletter.
My Idol

Rebecca has retired, however her commitment for swimming is,
as she describes in her own words: ‘as strong as it ever was’; she is
starting her own teaching lessons called ‘Swim Stars’ for ages 3-11
so she can teach younger children how to swim “the Becky way”.
This has also motivated me to help out with the younger ones at
Alton by becoming a swim teacher as soon as possible, so I can
give them as much knowledge as I know on swimming, and the
technique skills. Moreover, as a club, we can help the younger
generation for England and Alton to grow and become more
competitive than ever.
I will always look up to Rebecca Adlington as a person who kept
trying when things didn’t go to plan and passed on her skills to
others. I think it is important to have someone to be inspired by,
because it pushes you to your limits and gets you where you want
to be in the future.
My idol is Rebecca Adlington (www.rebeccaadlington.co.uk).
She is a two times Olympic gold medallist and achieved two
bronze medals at the London 2012 Olympic Games. In her early
years, Adlington learnt how to swim when she was three and started racing at nine years old.
Ever since I started swimming Rebecca has always been my
inspiration. I have always tried to follow her advice on points like
training to my maximum every session, eating the right food and
preparing well for competitions. The amount of times she swims a
week (as seen on the table) is phenomenal, but it shows how so
much training can pay off and get you to the Olympics, twice.

Annual Awards Evening and Hog Roast
Please join us on Friday 10th July from 6.30pm to celebrate another successful year for our club and to congratulate our swimmers
and coaching team on their achievements. We’ll be handing out trophies and certificates in a variety
of categories across all age groups and squads so this is an event for all our swimmers and their families.
The event takes place at Alton Rugby Club and the £6 ticket will get you a drink from the bar and food. Tickets will be on sale after
half-term from pool reps and Dee Druce. Please look out for further announcements nearer the time.

Balázs is our head coach and comes from
Hungary. He has worked in Egypt and has a
background in open water swimming. He has
competed at Hungarian national level and was
the national champion for four consecutive
years.
Within the club he has a clear vision of how to
develop and improve the swimmers. He has
brought the club recent success with national,
regional and county qualifying times. He has
been with Alton since 2010 and has achieved
some outstanding results with swimmers
across the club.

why?
Where’s the best place you’ve ever travelled

Egypt – it is very different to here.

Counties 2015
This year’s Counties were held over three weekends between 28th February15th March at the Mountbatten Centre and Waterlooville. Over the whole
event our swimmers recorded 108 PBs, set a range of short and long-course
club records and won 23 medals. Full reports and results are on the website.
In the relays the Boys Age 9-12 Medley team of Kai Jackson, George
Dominy, Will Ellington and Nicholas Ross produced a determined
performance to win the bronze medal against some tough opposition.
In the Age 10/11 category George Dominy made two Breaststroke finals
taking silver in the 100m event in his first counties. Kai Jackson produced a
series of impressive swims to finish his campaign with four gold (200m
Backstroke, 200m Breaststroke, 200m Butterfly and 200m IM), three silver
(400m Freestyle, 50m and 100m Backstroke) and two bronze (100m Breaststroke and 100m Butterfly). Kai’s brilliant 200m Backstroke swim set a new
club record for his age group.
Mia Spencer was a finalist in the Age 12 category, finishing 6th in the 100m
Backstroke, while in the same age group Will Ellington was in great form
across no less than 16 races. He finished the event with four gold (1500m
Freestyle, 200m Butterfly, 200m and 400m IM), two silver (40m Freestyle
and 100m Butterfly) and one bronze (50m Butterfly) setting an impressive
nine club records.
In the Age 13 category Rory Plewes won bronze in the final of the 100m
Butterfly and made three other finals. Ella Hamilton won gold at 100m and
200m Breaststroke and bronze at 400m and 800m Freestyle; her 200m,
400m and 800m swims setting new Open club records. Jess Cross and
Rebecca Alder both made finals in the 14 years age group. Jess competing in
the 50m and 100m Butterfly and Rebecca in the 100m Backstroke.
Julian Greig set an Age 15 club record in the 1500m Freestyle and in the
same age group Naomi Van Dongen produced six long-course PBs and her
50m Breaststroke was a double medal-winning swim; silver in both the Age
15 and Junior categories, the latter earning her a podium presentation.
In the 16/Over age group there were new club records for Jerome Greig
(1500m Freestyle) and Lewis Cuff (50m Backstroke). Megan George set five
new club records including Open records for the 50m and 100m Butterfly.
After making the final of the 50m fly Megan produced a brilliant swim to
take the bronze medal and a well-deserved place on the podium.
Overall the 2015 HCASA County Championships can be considered a great
success. We have individual champions in Kai Jackson (five events), Will
Ellington (four) and Ella Hamilton (two) and other medallists in George
Dominy, Rory Plewes, Nicholas Ross, Naomi Van Dongen and Megan
George.

Rushmoor Royals Level 1 meet
Club records fell at the Garrison Pool,
Aldershot, on the weekend of 11th-12th April.
George Dominy dominated the Breaststroke
events in the Boys Age 9/10 category winning
gold at all three distances and breaking the
long-course Age 11/Under record at 50m in a
time of 44.13. Will Ellington was similarly
dominant in the Age 11/12 Butterfly winning
gold in the 100m and 200m events and bronze
at 50m. Another gold at 200m IM completed
his medal haul; all four swims producing new

group swimmers with Alton-based swimmers
competing against a combined Petersfield-Mill

PBs underlines the success and value of this
