Marketing and Communications Coordinator
Salary: $69,056.00 - $87,601.00 plus 15.4% super and entitlements.
ABOUT ARTBANK:
Artbank is a program of the Australian Government that directly supports contemporary
artists through the acquisition of their work while actively promoting the value of Australian
visual culture to both the public and private sectors. The Artbank collection of approximately
10,000 artworks is made available through a leasing program. Artworks from the Artbank
collection are rented by private, commercial and government clients, and Australian
embassies around the world.
Artbank has been operating successfully for 35 years.
ABOUT THE DIVISION:
Artbank is administered through The Ministry for the Arts, a division of the AttorneyGeneral’s Department responsible for programs and policies that ensure the sustainability of
Australia’s arts and culture sector - supporting artistic production, protecting and
strengthening cultural heritage and expression, and encouraging opportunities for public
engagement with arts and culture.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
The position of Marketing and Communications Coordinator is responsible for ensuring
Artbank’s program objectives are effectively communicated to the organisation’s
stakeholders. With Artbank’s stakeholders ranging from clients spread across both the
public and private sectors nationally and internationally as well as artists and the broader
community, this role requires someone who thinks outside the norm and who is an innovator
in their field. And while you will be results focused, you will also have an acute
understanding as to the requirements of working in a government context.
This is a full time position for an experienced Marketing and Communications professional ideally with an interest/experience working with contemporary art. Artbank’s head office is
located in Waterloo, Sydney. This position is based in Sydney.
DUTIES:
Under general guidance and in accordance with APS values and Code of Conduct,
Government and Departmental policies and the relevant Secretary’s Instructions, the
Marketing and Communications Coordinator’s duties include, but are not limited to, the
following:
Marketing
Strategic planning

Develop and implement an annual marketing and communications plan designed to
raise the profile of the organisation – supporting the leasing service, projects and
program initiatives and developing current and new business;
Consult with the heads of the commercial and curatorial units to identify priorities;
Establish an agreed set of key performance indicators to monitor the overall
effectiveness of the marketing plan and associated initiatives;
Undertake targeted market research to determine useful market segments, their
needs and opportunities to grow audiences and revenue through the art leasing
service;
Remain up-to-date with current market conditions and conduct ongoing competitor
analysis;
Consult and collaborate with the senior staff to identify potential strategic partnership
opportunities; and
Report on all marketing activities and results as requested, including at staff
meetings and through regular updates with your Supervisor.
Budgeting

Develop and manage the marketing budget and deliver all marketing and
communication activities within the agreed budget;
Manage the productivity of the marketing plans and projects; and
Source and manage external suppliers as needed, ensuring compliance with relevant
procurement rules; a high standard of service and value for money.
Campaigns

Oversee the development of campaign concepts in support of the organisation’s
commercial and curatorial objectives;
Work with graphic designers, art directors and other contractors to develop materials
in support of targeted campaigns and organisational objectives including writing
creative briefs, managing sign-off procedures and the implementation of effective
systems and processes;
Manage the scheduling, planning and production of advertising and marketing
materials with the design team and production houses;
Manage marketing roll-out; including advertising, direct marketing campaigns,
signage and collateral distribution;
Track campaigns against timelines, objectives and project plans; and
Write and edit marketing and promotional copy as required.
Communications
Corporate Communications

Develop, promote and ensure compliance with a Corporate Communications Style
Guide that aims to maintain/strengthen Artbank’s corporate identity;
Ensure Artbank’s compliance with Australian Government branding guidelines;
Ensure the development and implementation of strategies to effectively engage
Artbank’s home department and the Australian Government more broadly in support
of the program’s objectives; and
Oversee the development and production of branded collateral as required.
Publications

Oversee the production of Artbank’s printed material for publication online and in
hardcopy format, including Sturgeon magazine;
Coordinate content, issue agreements and manage budgets and payments ensuring
appropriate approvals are received, work with external contractors including
designers, print houses and editors to ensure publications are delivered on time and
within budget;
Research, approach and secure appropriate advertisers for Sturgeon magazine; and
Manage the distribution of Sturgeon magazine.
Website/online

Coordinate the Artbank and Sturgeon websites – ensuring content is up-to-date,
correct and relevant; public feedback is collected, assessed and recommendations
made for ongoing improvements and draft/coordinate and input content as required;
Coordinate the development and delivery of the monthly Artbank EDM - overseeing
the creation of content, proof reading, editing and drafting of text as required while
ensuring content is engaging with a consistent tone of voice;
Organise staff to submit relevant information for the website and EDM in a timely
manner;
Liaise with the website publishing team from Artbank’s home department, the website
host provider and other contractors as required to ensure any relevant technical
requirements are met; and
Use creative thinking and initiative to analyse website performance metrics and make
recommendations on content, site design or features to improve effectiveness of web
content and/or applications.
Social Media
•
Build and implement social media programs that ensure appropriate messaging is
executed online in support of organisational objectives, incorporating Facebook,

Twitter, Vimeo, Tumblr, Instagram, etc. – for both Artbank and Sturgeon magazine –
in line with Government guidelines;
Monitor social media groups, trends, tools, and applications and recommend
actions/next steps;
Work closely with colleagues across the organisation and within Artbank’s home
department to develop content for social networking sites and coordinate relevant
staff to post;
Regularly report insights gained from social media monitoring to internal and external
stakeholders;
Monitor Artbank's social media performance usage reports and tracking search
engine results; and
Respond to social media inquiries about online activities in a timely and courteous
fashion – in consultation with relevant staff from Artbank’s home department, as
required.
Media Relations
•

Oversee the scripting, presentation and production of promotional materials and
media packages;
Manage the delivery of resources and materials to Artbank’s publicists and partners
as required;
Coordinate requests for interviews by the media, ensuring approvals are sought and
received from Artbank’s home department, making assessments and providing
advice as required;
Liaise with Artbank’s home department on potential sensitive issues related to media
coverage/requests; and
Managing event photography, documentation and production of video footage, as
required.
Partnerships
•

Identify, develop and manage relationships with partner organisations in support of
Artbank’s program objectives;
Develop agreements to define new and existing partnerships, ensuring appropriate
approvals are sought and received;
Act as primary point of contact for organisational partners;
Engage relevant Artbank staff in support of partnerships activities and events; and
Conceptualise, develop and deliver events in support of client development and
organisational partnerships.
Events
•

Coordinate the delivery of all events in the Artbank program, including partner and
client activities, the Artbank Social Club as well as exhibition openings in the gallery;
Develop and monitor budgets for Artbank events ensuring value for money, on time
execution and an appropriate standard is achieved and maintained; and
Ensure all approvals required for events are sought and gained as required.

JOB SPECIFIC SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential Criteria
•

Demonstrated experience in campaign delivery, with proven skills in developing
effective and targeted marketing solutions.
Understanding of marketing practices and trends across all current and emerging
mediums, including digital technologies.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, highly developed negotiation skills
and proven experience in building and maintaining excellent relationships with a
broad range of internal and external stakeholders.
Excellent attention to detail with highly developed organisational and time
management skills.
Proven experience in the management and delivery of a range of events.
Proven experience in managing budgets, including monitoring expenditure and
maximising outcomes with limited resources.
Understanding of working in the government context. Knowledge of and ability to
apply APS Values, participative management practices, workplace diversity and
occupational health and safety within a work and team environment.
Desirable Criteria
•

Relevant tertiary qualifications in marketing, communications or management.
Knowledge of Australia’s arts community, either visual arts or performing or similar.
