What is the role of a Leader?
With free trade agreements, freeing of trade barriers, emergence of new and vibrant economies, and the rapid pace of
technology development, business has become global and business has a huge and important role in modern
society. Whether it is the supply of goods and services, business capital generation, employment, R&D, business
innovation, income generation for the individual and the state, or corporate responsibility all these impact on the lives of
every individual and the economy of every state.
Not all businesses are huge well-capitalised corporations. Many businesses start as the ideas of one person who spots a
gap in the market or a commercial opportunity and who is prepared to take the calculated risk. Small businesses are vital
to the success of the economy because they meet local needs, serve the requirements of larger businesses, and are an
important source of employment. Today’s small companies may well become tomorrow’s big names.
Managers are responsible for optimising organisational resources to ensure that their organisations achieve their
purposes and goals. Managers guide organisations and influence all the phases of modern organisations. Good,
responsible, innovative, and participative management is indispensable in all organisations be it a government
department or a private enterprise. It is management that ensures that all the activities of the organisation are designed
effectively and that every individual worker contributes towards achieving organisational goals. Management makes all
the difference in the quality of life between nations and effective management is probably the main resource of all
developed countries.
