A Letter From The President
Dear Family and Friends,
I would like to open by remembering our extraordinary founder, Mildred “Miggy” Krentel who was a visionary,
champion for those most vulnerable and always a great supporter. We lost Miggy in January, but her legacy will live
on through Melmark, and she will be forever in our hearts.
Each year I have the great pleasure of sharing with you our Annual Donor Report. Melmark is most fortunate to have
many individuals, foundations, corporations and civic organizations that lend their support and partner with us to
ensure that the children and adults we serve have every opportunity they need for a healthy and productive life.
I am always in awe of the varied forms of support we receive from so many. We are so grateful to our Board of
Directors who regularly lend their expertise, guidance, leadership and financial support. We have an Advisory Board
that plans and works ten months a year to host a very special event, the Hubert J. P. Schoemaker Classic, which is a great success each and
every year! In 2012 alone, 885 volunteers gave of their time with more than 3,400 hours in service. We are thankful for our foundation and
corporate partners who award grants for a wide variety of capital projects and program initiatives which enhance our educational, clinical,
residential, and staff development and training programs. Words cannot express our appreciation to all the individuals who lend their financial
support, helping us to maintain the exceptional programs that go above and beyond the basics and make Melmark unique. Among the many
things made possible were: purchase of SMART boards for classrooms, iPads for the students, structural upgrades to the indoor pool on the
Pennsylvania campus, which allows us to continue providing year-round aquatics programs essential to our physical therapy services. In New
England, we have renovated a residence to create a five bedroom home to house young adults, piloting the first adult program for Melmark
New England.
Today, Melmark serves close to 1,000 children and adults in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. We have been able to grow to meet the needs of
these individuals and their families from many communities in the Mid-Atlantic Region, throughout New England and beyond. Our programs
and services are provided by highly trained and very dedicated staff in the best possible school facilities, vocational settings and residences. So
much of this is made possible with your support and generosity.

A Message From The Chairman
Dear Family and Friends,
It has been my pleasure to serve Melmark over the past seven years through my participation with the Hubert J.P.
Schoemaker Golf Classic. Hubert Schoemaker was a dear friend and a respected professional, but it was his love
for Melmark and its impact on the life of his daughter that made the work of the Classic so important. I continue
working with the Classic, but consider it my honor to serve Melmark as Chairman of the Melmark Charitable
Foundation.
Melmark has moved forward to strengthen its financial stability in these uncertain economic times. I am inspired
to see how Dr. Gillis-Donovan, Melmark’s executive team and dedicated staff work closely together to ensure that
the finest care, training, education, residential services and programs are available to all the children and adults in
Melmark’s care.
Since Melmark’s inception in 1966, private philanthropy has been important to the life of the organization, allowing strategic visions to become
reality through gifts for capital projects, scholarship and endowment. In 1986, Melmark established a Charitable Foundation Board (MCF).
The challenge and vision of the MCF Board has been to continue to broaden, grow, diversify and streamline our fundraising efforts. This is a
shared effort with Melmark’s internal Advancement Department and the CEO. Because of this, the organization has been further enabled to
look forward and to take on new planning initiatives that can only happen through the generous gifts of our families, friends, corporations and
foundations. We are grateful to all who have given, and we continue to engage others, make new friends and establish new partners who ensure
Melmark’s vitality and longevity.
This report reflects those individuals and organizations that have made Melmark a priority in their lives. They see the importance of what we
do and know their giving plays a major role in our work.

Mildred “Miggy” Krentel: 1921-2013
Remembering Our Founder
This January, Melmark lost a great
woman who created opportunities
for children and adults with special
needs to grow and achieve. Mildred
“Miggy” Krentel was a pioneer in
a time when people with special
needs were pushed aside, their rights
ignored, and often sent away to live
in facilities far from home.
She and her husband, Paul, co-founded Melmark as the Home
that Love Built. Today, Miggy’s vision of a community based
on the foundation of family, love and faith continues to provide hope to countless families.

Miggy’s passing leaves a great void, but we are equally proud
to sustain the legacy born out of the faith and determination
of Paul and Mildred Krentel. That is why we felt it so important to create the Paul and Mildred Krentel Legacy Society,
recognizing individuals who have made future provision for
Melmark.

The Paul and Mildred Krentel Legacy Society, named for
Melmark’s founders in recognition of their legacy, recognizes
individuals who have made provision in their estates for
future gifts in support of Melmark, thus creating their own
legacy that will ensure the organization’s excellence beyond its
first 100 years. These faithful donors are honored for naming
Melmark in a will, or for making a gift from their estate in the
form of a charitable gift annuity, a life income trust or a life
insurance policy.

Annual, Unrestricted Gifts Make an Impact
Stephen and Carol Memishian of Greenwich, CT, value and appreciate the ongoing work of
Melmark. They realize that its future is dependent on consistent annual gifts from family and
friends to support general operations, and that their gift is most valuable to the organization

Vertex, Inc. made a generous contribution through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program.
This support is advancing Melmark’s Educational Technology Project, enabling students to enjoy the
benefits of our curriculum regardless of the physical and intellectual challenges they face.
Through the support of Vertex, we have installed SMART boards throughout The Melmark School and
provided iPads in classrooms, during music and art instruction as well as in occupational and speech
therapies. These devices provide a wide array of innovative applications and web-based programs, giving
Melmark students more options to access curricula, develop communication skills, and learn in ways that
traditional methods may not allow.

Impacting Aquatics at Melmark
The McLean Contributionship has provided essential support for capital projects in
the past and in 2012, the foundation made a grant of $25,000 to support much needed
structural renovations of Melmark’s indoor pool. These renovations and repairs have
ensured uninterrupted Aquatics Programs for Melmark’s children and adults, in addition
to helping Aquatics staff to expand instruction time to participants in the Special
Olympics Programs.

Opening Doors for Children
A $15,000 grant from the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation provided funding for the Melmark New England
Consultation Team to provide a training series to families and support staff impacted by autism in Fall River, MA.
Working in collaboration with the Fall River Boys & Girls Club, Melmark New England provided training to the
organization’s staff. This created an environment of comfort and understanding that allowed the Fall River
Boys & Girls Club to implement supports and strategies in order to open programming to children of all ability levels.

Golfing for Melmark
The Seventh Annual Hubert J.P. Schoemaker Classic raised $312,000 net proceeds in support of Melmark’s programs and services for children and adults with intellectual disabilities including autism.
The Classic honors the late Hubert Schoemaker, who founded Centocor. His eldest daughter lived at Melmark for 28 years. The Schoemaker Classic has raised more
than $2.5 million for Melmark since its inception. Funds raised by the Classic have supported Melmark in many ways. Some of those include a state-of-the-art program
area to teach life and job skills to adults, new classrooms for early childhood education programs, a new art room and a multi-purpose center that includes a full-size
gym and a performing arts stage.
The 2012 Hubert J.P. Schoemaker Classic was played on three courses: Waynesborough Country Club, St. Davids Golf Club and The ACE Club. More than 300 golfers
took part in this annual event.

The 2012 fore Melmark New England Golf Benefit for Children with Autism was a big success, with over 180 golfers and sponsors raising over $200,000
for our programs and services. We were delighted to welcome back many returning players and friends, as well as several new foursomes.
This year’s event offered a double-flight scramble format, live helicopter ball drop and a chance to “Beat the Pro”. We were fortunate to have PGA Pro
Golfer, Rob Oppenheim, join the morning round. Golfers had a chance to step up and wager that they could drive the ball further than the pro. Although
no winners emerged from that challenge, everyone had fun trying!

On Saturday, May 5, 2012, Melmark held its biennial Dream Maker’s Ball at the historic Hotel du Pont in
Wilmington, Delaware. Nearly 400 attended the event, which included celebrity guests, Melmark friends
and family and event sponsors.

Pilot Freight Services was Presenting Sponsor for The 2012 Melmark Dream Maker’s Ball, which raised $240,000. During the event, Mr. and Mrs. Richard G. Phillips, their family and
Pilot Freight Services received the Melmark Humanitarian Award. Mrs. Phillips accepted the award on behalf of her family and spoke of her oldest son’s extraordinary life at Melmark.
The Phillips are avid supporters of Melmark’s programs and services, and employees at their family company, Pilot Freight Services, volunteer at numerous Melmark events.
Among the guests were Mr. Dave Roberts, formerly of 6ABC Television. Dave and his wife, Patti, are longtime friends of Melmark and served as Dream Maker’s Ball Committee CoChairs. Mr. Jim Donovan of CBS3 Television served as Master of Ceremonies, and television meteorologist, Mrs. Karen Thomas was in attendance as well. Miss Maine 2012, Julie
Furtado, performed at the event.
The night also included live music, performed by Del’s Groove and a live auction featuring a ski getaway, donated by Mr. and Mrs. David Boreanaz of the hit television show, Bones.
The highlight of the evening was in the prestigious DuPont Theatre, where The Melmark Players took the stage. The actors and actresses received a standing ovation for their
performance of Best of Broadway, a compilation of scenes from some of Broadway’s most popular plays.
