July - Princeton Chamber of Commerce
8 U.S. 1 JuLY 23, 2014 Champions for Business August Events at the Chamber Letter from the Chairman Dear Friends, A highlight of this past month was the presentation at our monthly luncheon by Howard Stoeckel, the recently retired CEO of Wawa. In April, Wawa celebrated 50 years of operating convenience stores, having grown from a single store to a $9 billion enterprise with 22,000 employees and 650 outlets, all operating (and serving coffee) 24 hours a day. Mr. Stoeckel is widely admired for his success in strengthening the Wawa experience that customers have come to love. He shared stories from his 25 years at Wawa and used them to illustrate key leadership principles. Perhaps not surprisingly, these principles focused on his commitment to treating people well and upholding Wawa’s core values. Remarkably, Wawa’s successful business model is based on customer transactions that may average only $5 and customer interactions that may last only 4-5 minutes. Wawa customers are time-starved and want to complete their transactions quickly. That’s particularly true if that involves getting their morning coffee on the way to work. One of the keys to the Wawa experience, according to Mr. Stoeckel, is its emphasis on store associates serving as brand ambassadors, who express Wawa’s core values through their work. For this to work everything must be aligned around those values. As he explained, Wawa’s hiring and management is focused on its values. He added that Wawa also believed in sharing ownership of the company with the people who deliver the Wawa brand, the associates in every store, who now own 38 percent of Wawa stock. It was an impressive story and one that reminded all of us of the power of great organizational culture. Another highlight of the month was our Regional Mayoral Roundtable. This forum provided the may- ors of seven municipalities from our region an opportunity to share their visions for their communities, as well as describe the key challenges they face. It was fascinating to hear both the similarities and differences in their perspectives. In particular, many in the audience were impressed with the positive fiscal and governance impacts of Princeton’s consolidation, as reported by Mayor Lempert, as well as the absence of any interest in exploring consolidation on the part of residents in other nearby communities. On June 26 we enjoyed a wonderful Business After Business at the scenic Springdale Golf Club. This club serves as the home course for the Princeton University men’s and women’s golf teams, and Chamber members enjoyed the opportunity to explore the club’s facilities at this well-attended event. On July 1 Eric Jackson was inaugurated as the new mayor of Trenton. As many have said, our region cannot thrive without a strong capital city. Much anticipation accompanied the election of Trenton’s new mayor, and he has already made several key appointments to his cabinet. The Chamber looks forward to working in partnership with the new administration to strengthen local businesses and promote new investment in Trenton. We have some exciting programs set for the month ahead. On July 23 the Business Before Business Breakfast event will provide an opportunity to hear Ron and Ruthie Bzdewka share their story of the origins of Princeton’s own House of Cupcakes. We look forward to hearing them describe how they perfected their award-winning cupcakes and other baked goods (and perhaps sample a few) and then made the leap to franchise their business. Our next monthly luncheon will feature a presentation by Julie Brown, the senior VP and chief technology officer of Universal Display Corporation. Ms. Brown has been described as “one of the 20 brainiest people in New Jersey” and has used her remarkable abilities to develop the technologies behind one of the most innovative companies in New Jersey. The company develops organic light emitting diode technologies that are used in digital displays for devices such as television screens, computer monitors, as well as for lighting and even flexible displays (think of foldable daily refreshed newspapers). This will be a fascinating talk. One final note: the Chamber is grateful for the support from throughout the region that has enabled us to achieve record levels of growth over the first six months of this year. We have already exceeded 100 new members for the year, and we’re on track to have the largest growth in membership in our history. We are stronger financially than ever and once again we will be able to partner with the Princeton Area Community Foundation to award grants to nonprofit organizations in our region to support community development.
