All About Hummingbirds
How Safe Do You Feel?
Larry and Emily Scheunemann are retired school
teachers from the Janesville public schools. Larry is a
Master gardener and an avid
wildlife photographer. Emily is
a naturalist and together they
enjoy landscaping for wildlife
so they can enjoy watching and
photographing wildlife at their
home. They will talk about the
life of a Ruby-throated hummingbird using photos
taken in their yard by Larry. Hummingbirds are especially interesting birds with exceptional abilities. You
will learn why they are not fragile, sweet or meek. Do
not be fooled by their size or beauty. Find out why
hummingbirds are jewels of the bird world as well as
necessary to many of our favorite plants. Join them
on Friday, August 16th at 9:30 a.m. We ask that you
sign up at the receptionist desk, but feel free to join
us either way.
The Milton Police Department, is offering a selfdefense program for women in the community called
S.A.F.E.—Selfdefense, Awareness,
Familiarization and
Exchange. This twohour class, taught in
conjunction with the
Janesville Police Department, educates women on how to protect themselves from crime and introduces physical training
methods. This is for women 16 years or older. No
males will be allowed at this event. To register call
608-868-6910 Ext. 225. The class is Saturday,
August 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at The Gathering Place. The cost is $5.
Something’s in the air!
You know how you feel when you step out on the deck
and the neighbor is grilling out? “Man! Something
smells really good!” Well, there’s something cooking at
The Gathering Place in September. Check it out in the
next newsletter. Something is in the air!
Cookbook Contest Going Strong!
We’ve still got Cookbooks!!! We still need to sell Cookbooks!! If you would like to WIN money in the Cookbook Contest you need to sell the most cookbooks by Labor Day (official deadline
is Tuesday, September 3, 2013 by 4:00 p.m.). First place prize is $100; 2nd Prize
$50 and 3rd Prize $25. Each Cookbook will be sold for $10 each or three for $25.
Watch as our mountain of cookbooks by the receptionist desk disappears! The
numbers on the giant board by the display are inching down. Dave says, “ I know
everyone is doing all they can to help us be successful during this sale, but if every
member made an effort to stop by and buy just one cookbook, we would be $4,500
closer to our goal of selling all the cookbooks”. Thanks everyone!
GREETINGS FROM THE DIRECTOR
GETTING TO KNOW YOU
Everyone knows the “dog days of summer” occur during the hottest and muggiest part of the season. Webster defines ‘dog days” as the period
of time between July and early September when the hot and sultry
weather of summer usually occurs
in the northern hemisphere, a period of stagnation and inactivity.
But where does the term come
from? Why do we call the hot sultry days of summer
“dog days”? In ancient times, when the night sky was
unobstructed by artificial lights different groups of
peoples in different parts of the world drew images in
the sky by “connecting the dots” of stars. The brightest of the stars in the Canis Major (the big dog) is Sirius, which also happens to be the brightest star in the
night sky. In the summer, however, Sirius the ‘dog
star’ rises and sets with the sun. During late July Sirius is in conjunction with the sun, and the ancients
believed that the heat added to the heat of the sun,
creating a stretch of hot and sultry weather. They
named this period, from 20 days before the conjunction to 20 days after, “dog days”, thus we have the
“dog days of summer”.
In celebration of “dog days”, we at The Gathering
Place are planning a special day of activities surrounding our dogs. On National Dog Day, Monday, August 26 we plan to have the day filled with activities
and demonstrations centered around man’s best
friend. Mark your calendars because you won’t want
to miss this special day at TGP. More information
will be available as the day’s schedule is finalized. Everyone is encouraged to stay for lunch that will also
celebrate this “dog days” theme of the day. Call in by
Friday noon, August 24 to make lunch reservations.
We are so blessed to spend our summers in the great
state of Wisconsin.
Dave Fisher
I have been writing this column for nearly three
years now. Each month gets a little harder to find a
topic. This morning I received an email from Sara
telling me she needs an article
soon. Here goes!
We have been having a lot of
trouble with our website. When
we started the website, a group of
students from UW Whitewater
helped us design and set up the
site. This was several years ago. Over time the
website has grown outdated. There are ever so many
new innovations that have been developed for a
more usable and readable website.
Starting last winter, the site wouldn’t let me update
the events new information. I changed browsers
three times and each change would work for a little
while. Now nothing works. The board authorized us
to redo our website. We have entered into an
agreement with Bliss Communications to develop a
new and exciting web page. It will take us a few
more months to get every thing worked out.
When we launch the new and improved website
for The Gathering Place you will still use the same
web address. We will try to make the site easier for
you to navigate. We hope to have a site that is much
more eye appealing. New colors and content should
make your journey around our website an enjoyable
experience.
If you haven’t visited our website, go to
www.gatheringplacemilton.com and see the old
version before it is gone. Then when the new version
is online you will be able to judge the results. We
are confident that you will be pleased with the
improved website.
As always, I would appreciate any and all feedback
from our readers. Contact me at

Movie of the Month
The Movie of the Month is Moneyball. It's amazing
that Moneyball makes baseball statistics seem fascinating--but that's because it's not really a movie about
numbers, and it's not really a movie
about baseball, either. It's about
what drives people to take risks--in
this instance, Billy Beane (played by
Brad Pitt), general manager of the
Oakland A's, who's just had his best
players poached by teams that can
afford to pay a lot more for them. Fed up with how
money twists the game, he listens to Peter Brand (Jonah
Hill), who persuades him that certain players are being
undervalued for trivial reasons--that statistics reveal hidden strengths that could produce a winning season.
Beane takes Brand's advice, then has to fight everyone
else around him to follow it through. Moneyball is
based on a true story.
The movie will be shown on Thursday, August 15 at
1:15 pm. There is no charge for the movie, but
donations are accepted and appreciated for beverages
and popcorn.

Quilling or paper filigree is an art form that involves
the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and
glued together to create decorative
designs. The paper is wound
around a quill to create a basic coil

the tip and these shaped coils are
arranged to form flowers, leaves,
and various ornamental patterns
similar to ironwork. It is used to
decorate wedding invitations, birth announcements,
greeting cards, scrapbook pages, framed art, boxes,
etc. If you are able to teach this to a class, please call

TGP Baby Quilts for WIC
Yard and Garden Help
Babies who benefit from these talents are part of this
area’s Women Infant Children
Program (WIC) and the goal of
the 30”x 40” quilts is to promote
breastfeeding. We especially want
to thank all the volunteers who
sew quilts at home and bring them
into TGP. So far, in 2013, we
have donated 62 quilts to smiling
babies at WIC. It’s a great time to
learn new quilting techniques. The next WIC work/
fun day will be Friday, August 23 from 9a.m. to
3p.m. at The Gathering Place. Volunteers who
would like to share their talents to sew, cut, quilt, tie
or bind are welcome.
We are still in need of volunteers for the TGP yard
and gardens. Every Tuesday morning at 7:00 a.m. (before it gets too
hot) the volunteers are hard at
work. You can stay an hour or a
few hours. There is no need to
sign up in advance. Just show up
and someone will show you what to
do. Thank you!

CLUBS, CLASSES, M EETINGS
August Book Club
Paper Crafting
On Thursday, August 22 at 1:00 the club will be discussing the book “Lost Boy” by
Brett W. Jeffs. In the polygamous Fundamentalist Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
(FLDS), girls can become valuable
property as plural wives, but boys
are expendable, even a liability. In
this powerful and heartbreaking
account, former FLDS member
Brent Jeffs reveals both the terror
and the love he experienced growing up on his prophet’s compound—and the harsh
exile existence that so many boys face once they have
been expelled by the sect. The son of a prominent
family in the church, Brent could have grown up to
have multiple wives of his own and significant power
in the 10,000-strong community. But he knew that
behind the group’s pious public image—women in
chaste dresses carrying babies on their hips—lay a
much darker reality. So he walked away and was the
first to file a sexual-abuse lawsuit against his uncle.
Now Brent shares his courageous story and that of
many other young men who have become “lost boys”
when they leave the FLDS, either by choice or by expulsion.
Need a fun craft to do on Monday mornings? Check
out the paper crafters at 9:00 a.m.
This is a diverse group of people
with quite a variety of paper crafts.
Everyone is welcome to bring in
their current project and work
with the group. No instructor, just
friends to help out. Some of the
projects they like to work on are
scrapbooking, card making, paper flowers, origami,
paper boxes, etc. Everyone is welcome!
Stained Glass Class
It’s hot outside! Stay cool and do a project at the same
time. There are only a few supplies you
need to bring including your own safety
glasses, an old towel, and scissors. If
you have a soldering iron, please bring
it along. All other supplies will be provided and the cost is $15.00. The Class
will be held on Thursdays, August 8
and 22 at 1:00 p.m. Please sign up at
the front desk. New students are welcome, but please
notify the receptionist that you are a new.
Current Events
This group is made up of a variety of people interested
in the world around them. Discussions are lively. Join
this group each week as they tackle the day’s current
events. Whether you have lots to contribute or just wish
listen, be sure to show up Wednesday at 9:00 a.m.
Basket Class
The basket selection for August is the “Pick-Up Sticks.” It has a base of 7.5 x 7.5 inches
and 10” high. Class will be on Thursday, August 15 and Friday August 16 from 8:30
a.m. till 3:00 p.m. with Carolyn Brown as your instructor. If you are new, there are a
few household items to bring. Call the front desk for a supply list. Basket class price is
$25. You do need to sign up ahead of time.

LIBRARY NEWS
by Lisa Brooks
"Rising Demand for Long-Term Care Services
and Supports for Elderly People," Congressional
Budget Office, 2013
"This Congressional Budget Office (CBO) report
was prepared at the request of the Chairman of
the Senate Committee on Finance. In keeping
with CBO's mandate to provide objective,
impartial analysis, the report makes no
recommendations."
"By 2050, one-fifth of the total U.S. population
will be elderly (that is, 65 or older), up from 12
percent in 2000 and 8 percent in 1950. The
number of people age 85 or older will grow the
fastest over the next few decades, constituting 4
percent of the population by 2050, or 10 times
its share in 1950. That growth in the elderly
population will bring a corresponding surge in
the number of elderly people with functional
and cognitive limitations."
One study estimates that more than two-thirds of
65-year-olds will need assistance to deal with a
loss in functioning at some point during their
remaining years of life.3 If those rates of
prevalence continue, the number of elderly
people with functional or cognitive limitations,
and thus the need for assistance, will increase
sharply in coming decades."
Water Warning!
Dehydration is a serious concern in the elderly,
especially in hot climates and during the hot seasons. Your thirst mechanism
doesn’t alert the body that it
needs fluids, so a decreased
intake occurs which can lead
to dehydration, which can
lead to seizures and loss of
consciousness. Left untreated, dehydration will lead to multi-system organ failure and death.
