CA CCA Visits Washington DC
California CCAs Mike Huffman, Joel Wiley and Allan Romander
recently traveled to Washington DC to join Future Leaders in
Science Award recipients, Certified Crop Advisers, Greenfield
Scholars and others in America Society of Agronomy, Crop
Science Society of American and Social Science Society of
America to discuss with congress the need to support continued
funding for the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI).
The AFRI is a competitive funding mechanism for food,
agriculture and natural research funding. In 2013, California
received $18 million in grants from the program. Some of the
Universities that are doing research under the program include UC
Davis and Stanford.
The group spent a full day on Capitol Hill visiting with
Congressmen and Congressional/Senate Staff on the program.
They were in two different groups, and both groups included a
student from UC Davis and between them they made more than 15
office visits. Each representative was asked to sign a letter
supporting the funding.

2015 CDFA Nitrogen Management
Training Recap
Beginning in 2013 FREP, in
collaboration with the
University of California,
Agricultural and Natural
Resources (UC ANR)
began developing a
Nitrogen Management
Training Program (NMTP)
for the California Certified
Crop Advisors (CA CCA).
The CA CCA program was
identified as an ideal resource to assist growers with developing
nitrogen management plans and implementing best management
practices.
In 2014, the nitrogen management training sessions took place
from January through March at five locations, with 530 CA CCAs
completing the training. CAPCA was engaged by CDFA to manage
registration, attendance and tracking of continuing education units
related to the training. Three additional trainings were held in 2015
with an additional 198 attending. The total number of CA CCAs
trained was 728.
Through this collaborative program of CDFA, UC ANR and
CAPCA, 72% of the current CA CCAs have now completed the
nitrogen management training. This successful educational
opportunity was instrumental in providing CCAs with up to date
information so they could increase their already valuable service in
assisting growers with developing and implementing nutrient
management plans.
CA CCA would like to especially acknowledge the team work of
CAPCA, CDFA, UC ANR and the UC Office of the President staff
for their dedicated efforts to implement this crucial and worthwhile
training.

FREP Funding
CA CCA receives funding from FREP for the period of 2015-2017.
Dr. Dan Putnam, UC Davis, coordinates the grant funding that provides for
CAPCA administration of the project. The CA CCA Board would like to extend its
thanks to CDFA for the FREP funding of the CA CCA program. This funding has
been a key component in the success of the California CCA program. CA CCA
would also like to extend their thanks to the many fertilizer retailers and others
who pay the fertilizer mill assessments that provide funds to FREP.
