Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious and costly health
problem that affects millions of Americans and costs 5.8 billion
dollars every year in medical care. Women, the most common
victims of IPV, access health care over the course of their lives
for routine and preventive care, as well as for trauma and abuse
related conditions. Health care providers are uniquely placed
to assess for IPV and can play a significant role in helping their
patients access safety. This workshop is designed to create an
awareness about the importance of screening and responding
to intimate partner violence in the health care setting.

Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Practice Managers,
Case Managers, Care Coordinators
OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will

Discuss the physician’s role in addressing IPV

Identify the screening process for IPV

Identify how and when to refer patients to community
resources

Utilize IPV toolkit materials

FACULTY
Kellet Letson, MD, FACOG, is the Director of MAHEC Division
of Obstetric and Gynecology and he is the Women’s Service
Line Leader (department chair) at Mission Hospital. Clinically he
serves as an obstetrics hospitalist for the MAHEC Resident Team.
His undergraduate work was completed at Davidson College in
Davidson, NC; medical school at University of North Carolina
Chapel Hill School of Medicine and he completed his residency at
MAHEC. He has served on ACOG committees for several years,
and is a member of the ACOG Obstetrics Document Review
Panel. He is also currently serving on the Executive Committee of
the North Carolina Obstetrical and Gynecological Society.
April Burgess-Johnson, BS, QP, has worked in domestic
violence advocacy for 20 years. For about half of that time, she
served in local crisis programs in NC as a Shelter Manager, Court
Advocate, Educator, Program Director and Executive Director. In
addition, she served for almost a decade as a statewide facilitator
and trainer, working at the NC Council for Women and later the
NC Coalition against Domestic Violence (NCCADV). She is
adjunct faculty member with the NC Justice Academy. She has
trained domestic violence advocates, law enforcement personnel,
medical providers, social workers and other allied professionals
extensively across the US. April has been a co-investigator and
project director on multiple research projects in North Carolina
and have created multiple publications for public education. April
currently serves as the executive director for Helpmate, Asheville’s
domestic violence agency.
John P. Stewart, MD, ACOG, Emory University, Medical College
of Georgia, University of South Carolina OB-GYN residency. N.C
Men For Change Award winner 2007, from NCCADV. Helpmate
Board member and former chair. Laurel OB-GYN 1987-2012. Dr.
Stewart has given numerous presentations on domestic violence,
several for MAHEC.
Lisa Eby, MA, MSW, has over 14 years of experience in Health
and Human Services and the last 10 years working as the HR
Director for Health and Human Services integrating her knowledge
of systems thinking and organizational effectiveness to foster a
culture of workforce engagement, innovation and compassionate
service. Lisa also oversees the communications for Health and
Human Services. She earned a Master of Social Work degree
from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and also
holds a master’s degree in Biostatistics from the Medical College
of Virginia. Lisa is certified as a Senior Professional in Human
Resources (SPHR).

From I-40 Eastbound, take Exit 50 and turn left onto Hendersonville
Road.
From I-40 Westbound, take Exit 50B and merge onto Hendersonville
Road.
At the first light, turn left into the Double Tree Hotel complex. Turn left
towards the Biltmore Village Lodge. Just before the Biltmore Village
Lodge turn right and go up the hill to the MAHEC Biltmore Campus.
From 19-23 (I-26) take 240 East to Exit 5B (Charlotte Street). Exit
right onto Charlotte Street. At the 4th light, make a left onto Biltmore
Avenue. Proceed through 8 traffic lights. At the 9th light turn right into
the Double Tree Hotel complex. Turn left towards the Biltmore Village
Lodge. Just before the Biltmore Village Lodge turn right and go up the
hill to the MAHEC Biltmore Campus.
