Annual Meeting
Join old and new friends as Southern Obstetric and Gynecologic Seminar celebrates its 60th anniversary
of providing outstanding continuing medical education on women’s health. This year’s meeting honors
the history and tradition of Southern Ob/Gyn Seminar while providing relevant and timely information
that is of concern to today’s practicing physician. It is an honor and privilege to welcome past presidents
Hal Lawrence, MD, Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of ACOG and John Thorp,
MD, Professor and Director of UNC Women’s Primary Healthcare, as distinguished lecturers along with
a well-rounded faculty of the southeast’s foremost experts in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive
Surgery, Genetics, and Maternal/Fetal Medicine. The program carries AMA PRA Category 1 CME and
ACOG Cognate credit.
Members of Southern have always valued the opportunity to learn best clinical practices in a face-to-face
setting. Accompanying the academic opportunities of the meeting, we also value the collegiality of interacting socially. Asheville is always a treat in July -- cool, green and bubbling with activity. Optional social
activities include the Otis Duck Memorial Golf Tournament, now at Reems Creek Country Club and a
Thursday evening Wine Tasting Dinner at Corner Kitchen, one of Asheville’s top dining destinations.
Located in historic Biltmore Village, the restaurant is an easy walk from the DoubleTree. On Friday
evening our 60th anniversary banquet will be at Chestnut, a local “hit” in downtown Asheville with
transportation provided by Grayline Trolley.
Book your overnight accommodations at the DoubleTree at www.tinyurl.com/SouthernOB2014 or by
calling 828-274-1800 and asking for the Southern Ob/Gyn room block. The cut-off date for reserving
rooms at DoubleTree by Hilton is June 16, 2014.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this three-day educational activity, participants will be able to:
1. Discuss the origins of ob-gyn, recognize the impact of technology and sub specialization and discuss how gender and
generational differences influence the practice of ob-gyn
2. Appreciate the evolution of medical specialty organizations, identify the events that led to the creation of ACOG and value ACOG's role with Junior Fellows and NACOG
3. Review the history and purpose of using mesh materials for pelvic organ prolapse treatment and discuss the safety and
efficacy of transvaginal and transabdominal mesh use for pelvic organ prolapse treatment
4. Review the current regulatory position statements and recommendations on mesh use by the FDA, The American
Urogynecologic Society, The American Urologic Society and The Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine &
Urogenital Reconstruction
5. Discuss strategies for moving forward with treatment of women with symptomatic pelvic organ prolapse
6. Describe risk factors for the development of pelvic organ prolapse
7. Introduce anatomic approach to evaluation of pelvic organ prolapse: DeLancey’s anatomic organization and anatomic defects involving the vaginal apex, bladder, rectum, and perineum
8. Explain the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification (POP-Q) Examination and differentiate surgical treatment for pelvic organ prolapse
9. Recall the evidence supporting the introduction of HPV testing into routine cervical cancer screening and discuss the clinical implications of using HPV testing into routine cervical cancer screening
10. Review current American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP) guidelines in the management of an abnormal screening test, appreciate the role of risk assessment in the development of the ASCCP guidelines, and discuss the implications of HPV vaccination in the future screening and management for the prevention of cervical cancer
11. Appreciate the significant health burdens of preterm birth and incorporate evidence-based prevention strategies into practice
12. Comprehend the limitation of contemporary approaches to intrapartum assessment and explore new automated interpre-
tation technologies
13. Identify key clinical indicators your patient may be at risk for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, appreciate the recent expansion in testing options and understand when to consider expanded testing beyond BRCA1/2, and recognize the family implications of such a diagnosis
14. Identify key clinical indicators that your patient may be at risk for Lynch syndrome, review the role of tumor testing in guiding assessment, and recognize the role of germ-line genetic testing of patients with possible Lynch syndrome
15. Review the latest data on diabetes screening, appreciate the basis for application of a similar protocol for diabetes screening
in an obstetric population, and recognize the pros and cons of 1-step testing for gestational diabetes over conventional 2-step methods
16. Summarize classifications/criteria for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and recent changes, review current recommen-
dations for management of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, and discuss prediction, prevention and future implica-
tions of preeclampsia.

The Southern Ob/Gyn Lectureship was established to honor the memory of Dr. Roy Parker. Our
goal is to raise a sufficient amount of money allowing the establishment of an Endowment Trust
Fund that will eventually become self-sufficient. Each year, an honoree is chosen to present the
Roy Parker Lecture. This is an excellent way to honor the tradition and history of the Southern
Obstetric and Gynecologic Seminar and the contributions of Dr. Parker during the Seminar’s
formative years, and his support as a long-time, active member.
Southern Obstetric and Gynecologic Seminar would like to thank you, in advance, for your kindness
and generosity. Your contribution is fully tax deductible.
The Southern Obstetric and Gynecologic Seminar graciously accepts your financial
contribution for the on-going support of the Parker Lectureship, which is dedicated to the
advancement of Women’s Healthcare Education, as well as to honor the past and present
leaders of our organization.
