THE FIU MUSIC COMPOSITION & TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMS
The FIU Music Composition Program is designed to give students a strong background in the
techniques and languages of a variety of musical styles ranging from common practice music to the
most experimental contemporary approaches. Combining a strong emphasis in writing with analysis,
the program is designed to produce composers who are proficient in a variety of musical languages
while at the same time allowing for the evolution of an individual's personal compositional craft and
approach. A strong emphasis on musicianship, including the performance and conducting of a
student's own works, further enhances the young composer's development as a competent musician.
Numerous performance opportunities of students' works by excellent performers and ensembles as
well as hands on experience in the use of new technologies including computer music, and interactive
and notational software as well as interdisciplinary work are an integral part of the curriculum. Many
of our graduates have continued studies at other prestigious schools and have been the recipients of
ASCAP and BMI Student Composition awards. The graduate and undergraduate music composition
program at FIU prepares students for either continued graduate studies in composition or as skillful
composers continuing in a variety of careers. For more information regarding the program, please

The undergraduate Music Technology program is designed for candidates who have a background in
music (instrumental or vocal), and who are also interested in computers, mathematics, or physics.
Performance on a traditional instrument or voice is required. Additionally, a basic working knowledge
of music software such as Finale, Sibelius, Digital Performer, Logic, and Pro Tools is highly desired.
Most Music Technology majors will begin with Electronic Music I (MUC 2301) and continue through
the sequence of music technology courses, as well as physics and computer science courses. Students
must be admitted into the University and the School of Music before admission into the Music
Technology program is possible. Entrance into the University is contingent upon SAT scores and
overall GPA in high school, while entrance into the School of Music is determined by audition. The
specific requirements of the audition depend on the instrument on which the prospective student
will be auditioning. After a student is admitted to the University and the School of Music, admission
into the Music Technology program is contingent upon the approval of the area Director and related
faculty, and is dependent upon the performance of the student in the Electronic Music I and II
courses and/or the student’s portfolio of software, hardware, and electro-acoustic composition, and
sound design.
The M.M. with a concentration in Music Technology requires 36 hours past the Bachelor's degree for
completion of the degree. Graduate students in the program have a required summer semester
serving as an intern at a national or international music technology company. The culmination of a
student's work at FIU is the thesis project, which is a major technological undertaking, and which may
take the form of music software, music hardware, audio installation, or interactive digital media.
Most graduate Music Technology majors will begin with Electronic Music III and continue through the
sequence of music technology courses, although the exceptional student may enter in Computer
