A
s a longtime beneficiary of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, imagine our excitement
when they launched their new national television and print campaign. With Jennifer
Lopez as their spokesperson, “Put Your Money Where the Miracles Are” has placed
a national spotlight on the life-saving work that occurs at Cook Children’s and other children’s
hospitals, while helping us to raise funds.
There are a number of ways that you can support Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and
Cook Children’s. Join with Jennifer Lopez and patients, like Parker, by ordering your free miracle
band. By wearing one, you’re calling attention to the life-saving care provided at local children’s
hospitals. And by purchasing one of the iconic paper balloons at local retailers, you’re helping us
to care for our patients and families. Your support translates into state-of-the-art technology, new
treatments and expanded programs and services.
For instance, our music therapy program plays an important part in the healing process for our
patients. While for 1-year-old Sedriana, the xylophone is fun; for music therapist, Shea Ingram, it’s
one of the tools she uses to reduce Sedriana’s anxiety and fear. Hoping that the playful “ping” the
colorful mallet makes when it hits one of the keys just may be enough to get Sedriana to move her
arm and forget, even for a moment, about pain.
We have several programs and services in place at Cook Children’s to provide therapeutic outlets
for our patients because we realize that healing often occurs when children can play and be kids.
In fact, as you read this issue, you’ll learn about one of our employees who volunteers at Camp
Sanguinity each year because it provides children with cancer a welcome escape and summer camp
experience. The beautiful thing is that she is not alone. So many of our employees volunteer at
camps associated with Cook Children’s and give back in any number of ways, including donating to
Cook Children’s through our Employees Care campaign.
You see, they put their money and their time where the miracles are … just like you do.
Thank you for your continued support and for being a part of the miracles that happen at
Cook Children’s.
With gratitude,

Childress’
TIME WITH COOK CHILDREN’S COMES FULL CIRCLE.
Carol Childress’ first-born daughter, Joy, was just 6
weeks old when Carol was told she would need surgery
on her skull. As you can imagine, this isn’t the news a
new mother expects to hear.
It all began with a 300-mile trip from Midland to Fort
Worth. Her pediatrician suggested she get a second
opinion about a flat spot on Joy’s head. That consult led
them to Jack McCallum, M.D., a neurosurgeon at Fort
Worth Children’s Hospital (now Cook Children’s Medical
Center), who diagnosed Joy with craniosynostosis. This
is a condition in which one or more of the joints between
the bones of a baby’s skull close prematurely, before the
brain is fully formed.
Dr. McCallum recommended surgery, because without
it, Joy would have an abnormal head shape and facial
features, among other potential outcomes. The decision
to have the surgery had to be made quickly. The family
went home to enjoy their Thanksgiving, but they had to
make their decision by the following Monday, just days
after receiving the news.

Caregiving in action
On December 6, 1980, Joy was admitted to Fort
Worth Children’s Hospital for surgery on her skull.
Christmas came a little early for the family, because
the surgery was a success! But baby Joy’s head was
covered in stitches; 70 to be exact. Carol recalls
counting them many times.
Joy recovered flawlessly and now lives a happy,
healthy life. Carol has three beautiful grown
daughters, Joy, Jill and Jana, and is a grandmother to
Jonah, Noel, Nolan, Carter and Colby. Her encounters
with Cook Children’s continue to be a blessing, years
after her first meeting with Dr. McCallum.
Another challenge was ahead for the family. Joy’s
husband, Steven, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s
lymphoma, and was told that he needed a bone
marrow transplant. Carol’s helpful nature once again
jumped into action. She began researching how to
organize a bone marrow donor drive. Like before,
Cook Children’s became a source of hope.
Steven wasn’t a patient, or even a child, but still
Cook Children’s hosted a bone marrow donor drive
at Carol’s then workplace, Texas Christian University.
Unfortunately, that bone marrow donor drive did not
produce a match, but Steven was able to receive a bone
marrow transplant using his own stem cells.
In 2006, after a friend urged her to apply, Carol
accepted a job with Cook Children’s Health
Foundation. As part of the Donor Information
Services team, Carol helps to oversee the donor
database, interacting with donors and grateful
families like hers on a daily basis.
“Carol is an encourager. She leaves sweet notes
for co-workers with hand drawn illustrations and
uplifting messages,” said Cheryl Clark, Carol’s coworker. “If you come into the office in the morning to
find a sweet treat anonymously placed on your desk,
you know that Carol did it. She is a ray of sunshine for
everyone in the office.”
Grateful for all that Cook Children’s has done
for her family over the years, Carol chooses to give
back in unique and meaningful ways. She has sung
Christmas carols at the medical center, served tea to
doctors and nurses during an emotionally difficult
time and volunteers at arts and crafts activities at the
medical center.
For the past two summers, Carol has taken a week
off from work to volunteer as a counselor at Camp
Sanguinity, a Cook Children’s summer camp for
children with cancer, as well as their siblings, in the
8-year-old girls’ cabin.
“I had three
healthy kids and
I thought, ‘it’s
time for me to
give back.’ So
that’s why I do
it,” said Carol.
“Those families are going through a lot,” said Carol.
“Camp Sanguinity not only gives the child a break
from thinking about everything they have going on,
but it gives the siblings and mom and dad a break as
well. This is a place they can trust to leave their child,
as sick as they are, to care for them for a week while
they catch up on things or relax.”
“When you’re with those kids, and you see what
they are going through, you know that you can do
anything. And it’s hard! It’s exhausting walking
around that camp for a week - your legs are killing
you, you’re tired and you have blisters. But you do it
because you’re thinking, ‘if these kids can do it, I can
do it.’ They make me feel so strong and powerful.”
Over the past 35 years, Carol says she’s been blessed
by Cook Children’s. But to her co-workers, those
8-year-old girls at Camp Sanguinity and their families,
to the donors she interacts with and to all the patients
who walk through the doors of Cook Children’s, Carol
and her giving spirit are the real blessings.
Recently, Carol’s daughter, Jana, had her son’s
car seat inspected during a car seat safety check at
Cook Children’s to ensure that it was properly installed.
Months later, Jonah was in a car accident and his car
seat check may have saved his life. When the car seat
had to be cut from the seat belt that was securing it,
first responders noted how well it was installed and

Put Your Money Where
the Miracles Are
Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals® raises funds
and awareness for 170 member hospitals that provide 32
million treatments each year to kids across the U.S. and
Canada. Donations stay local, funding critical treatments,
pediatric medical equipment and charitable care.
Over the past 27 years, our community has donated
more than $18 million to Cook Children’s through
Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Supporters
give $1, $5 or $10 at a time, and that all adds up to a
lot of miracles for our patients!
As a long time member of Children’s Miracle
Network Hospitals for more than 27 years,
Cook Children’s is excited to be a part of the new
national awareness campaign – Put Your Money
Where the Miracles Are. Actress, singer and
television personality Jennifer Lopez is teaming
up with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals to
build awareness for the only children’s charity in
North America committed to raising funds for local
children’s hospitals.
“Like all moms, I’m always concerned about my
children’s well-being,” said Lopez. “But sometimes
they get sick. Sometimes they get hurt. That’s why I’m
so grateful we have children’s hospitals. If any child
needs a miracle, they’ll do everything in their power
to make one happen. Please join me in giving sick
and injured children every chance to get better. Put
Your Money Where the Miracles Are. Please join me in
supporting Cook Children’s.”
So, what does that mean to you – a loyal supporter
of Cook Children’s? Just like before, everywhere you
see the iconic miracle balloon in our six-county region,
know that when you give $1 in support of our corporate
partner campaigns, that dollar will directly benefit the
patients and families at Cook Children’s. Join Jennifer

Teaching children
valuable life lessons
Bonnie and Bill Barksdale BELIEVE IN TEACHING THEIR
CHILDREN ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF GIVING.
To Bonnie and Bill Barksdale, the Dallas-Fort Worth
area has always been home. They met in college at
the University of Texas at Arlington and married in
1999. Their daughter, Brynn, was born in 2005 and
her brother, Blake, was born in 2007. After Blake was
diagnosed with autism, Bonnie and Bill focused on
living an active lifestyle and providing experiences
for their children, to keep things fun for Brynn and to
change things up for Blake. As a family, they like to go
on “life adventures,” creating memories along the way.
Their family’s first encounter with Cook Children’s
was in 2008 when they heard about the Peter Pan
Birthday Club. At the time, they had decided that
Brynn had plenty of toys and wanted to share their
good fortune with children in need. Through the Peter
Pan Birthday Club, Brynn began learning the value of
philanthropy at a young age, and it’s something she
still continues today.
“From an early age, we’ve taught Brynn that giving
to those who have less than we do is important,”
explained Bill. “It’s so very easy to shelter children
from the tougher side of the world, and having never
had to experience true adversity, she does not have
the experience to understand it. By being involved
with Cook Children’s, we give her the opportunity
to see how some people experience misfortune, and
show her how to share her compassion with others.
We believe it’s critical to expose her to this, so that she
can understand how truly lucky she is to have what
she has. When our younger child was diagnosed with
autism, it opened her eyes even more to how other
families have to deal with unplanned medical issues.
She takes good care of her little brother, and extending
it to the children at Cook Children’s comes very natural
to her.”
The same year they learned about the Peter Pan
Birthday Club, Bonnie and Bill attended their first
Jewel Charity Ball, which benefits Cook Children’s.
They have tried to attend every year since. In 2011,
they found themselves at a table with the Vice
President of Cook Children’s Health Foundation,
14 | promise | the magazine of Cook Children’s HEALTH FOUNDATION
Grant Harris, discussing Cook Children’s capital
campaign that was underway at the time. At that
very moment, their names were drawn as the raffle
winners of a new car. Having just purchased new cars,
they saw this as another opportunity to give back to
Cook Children’s. They sold the car and donated the
money to the Fulfilling Our Promise campaign.
“I would choose
Cook Children’s for my
kids any day over any
other hospital in the
world,” said Bill.
“It seemed like fate was telling us where we
should give that money,” said Bill. “To our family,
philanthropy is more than just giving money; it’s
about understanding and sympathizing with those
that have had adversity in their lives. It’s so easy to
get wrapped up in our day-to-day problems, and
sometimes, we just need to stop and realize how truly
trivial our issues are compared to others. Working
with Cook Children’s does that for us. It provides
constant reminders that, even though we’ve had to
deal with having a child with autism, there are others
that have far worse issues. Philanthropy is more than
the donations – it’s about having compassion for those
less fortunate.”
While the Barksdales can count on one hand
the number of times they have had to come to
Cook Children’s for medical visits, Cook Children’s
cannot count the ways in which the Barksdales have
made a difference for our patients and their families.

THROUGH THEIR MEDICAL TRANSPORT GRANT PROGRAM, Southwest
Airlines
IS BRINGING FAMILIES TOGETHER AT TIMES WHEN THEY NEED IT MOST.
Nothing can
bring comfort to a
child more quickly
than a mother’s embrace, a father’s encouraging words
or a sibling’s lighthearted banter. At Cook Children’s, we
know that family is an integral part of the healing process,
especially for children.
Cook Children’s Case Management department is
responsible for overseeing and administering the Medical
Transport Grant program. As social workers become aware
of families that need medical transport tickets, they submit
their requests to our Medical Transport Task Force, comprised
of Cook Children’s social workers. The families must meet
certain criteria in order to qualify for this program.
But if a child has been transported to Cook Children’s
from across the state, or even across the country, their
family isn’t close by. Thanks to the generosity of Southwest
Airlines and their Medical Transport Grant program,
distance no longer has to keep patients and families apart.
In the past, this program has helped the family of a
cancer patient to travel to a consult about a clinical trial.
The family would not have been able to afford to make
the trip otherwise, and the patient was accepted into the
trial. These vouchers have also gone to help the family of
a 6-year-old girl who had recently undergone two cranial
vault reconstruction surgeries, but had a possible infection
around the incision of the surgery. It was recommended
that the family travel to Fort Worth immediately for a
neurosurgery appointment. The unexpected travel costs
would have been difficult for the family, and transportation
was limited after being in a car accident the week before;
the grant made this important trip possible.
Southwest Airlines provides plane tickets to family
members who don’t have the resources to purchase them.
For three years in a row, they’ve helped families close the
distance, bringing them together with their child who is
getting specialty care at Cook Children’s. It gives patients
the support of a family member or caregiver who otherwise
may not have been able to travel to Cook Children’s. The
comfort and familiarity this brings a child when they are
sick can be more powerful than any medicine.
“Partnering with these hospitals and organizations to
provide hope for those dealing with serious illness is an
honor for us,” said Linda Rutherford, vice president of
Communication and Outreach at Southwest Airlines. “It’s
touched our hearts to be able to connect our flights with the
hospitals’ care, and see the amazing difference this unique
program is making to families in our communities.”
The Southwest Airlines Medical Transport Grant
program has given families at Cook Children’s one less
thing to worry about, allowing them to stay focused
on more important things – each other. We are grateful
for Southwest Airlines’ support and the role that their
generosity plays in the healing process of our patients.
COOK CHILDREN’S IS BLESSED WITH MANY ACTIVE community groups WHO GENEROUSLY SUPPORT
US BY HOSTING A VARIETY OF FUNDRAISING EVENTS. WE APPRECIATE ALL OF THESE enthusiastic
donors AND THEIR volunteers WHO COORDINATE AND staff THESE EVENTS.
On January 20, 2015, members and benefactors of Jewel Charity
gathered in the lower level of the Dodson Specialty Clinics at
Cook Children’s to celebrate the success of the 61st Jewel Charity Ball.
Laura Bird, Jewel Charity President for 2014, announced the grand
total raised for Cook Children’s by Jewel Charity since the first ball in
1954: an incredible $63,904,000 for our patients and their families! The
theme for the 2014 ball was “Believe.” In addition to giving toward
uncompensated care, signature projects helped fund help fund dental
services at the newest Cook Children’s Neighborhood Clinic and the
Creative Artist in Residence Programme (CARPE), which provides
healing through a variety of arts. Jewel Charity’s generosity through
the years has brought decades of hope and healing to our patients and
families. We are so grateful for their deep commitment to the health of
our community’s children.

WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT PREMATURE BABIES, COWBOYS MAY NOT BE A PART OF THAT
THOUGHT. BUT IN FORT WORTH, THE TWO GO HAND IN TINY HAND, THANKS TO
the annual Cook Children’s Day at the Rodeo BENEFITING THE
NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (NICU).
For the past two years, the Fort Worth Stock Show and
Rodeo has designated a day where ticket sales from both
rodeo performances benefit Cook Children’s NICU. This
year’s event took place on February 4. In just two years,
more than $50,000 has been donated to help medically
fragile babies and their families.
For that one day, the atmosphere in the big arena
changes and the audience is reminded of how their
presence makes a difference. Between rodeo events,
images of babies are flashed on the Jumbotron and
messages of hope for the little ones are shared between
announcements of competitors’ times and scores.
For the second year in a row, 18-year-old Darby
Cone of Argyle, Texas, was invited to ride in the
Grand Entry on behalf of Cook Children’s. Darby was
born at 23 weeks, weighing 1 pound, 13 ounces. She
underwent 10 surgeries at Cook Children’s in the first
six months of her life.
This year, Darby’s sister, 16-year-old Abbey, was asked
to sing the national anthem. Abbey is a teen volunteer at
Cook Children’s and donates her time by working with
patients in the Child Life Zone. Darby and Abby were
the perfect representatives for Cook Children’s, along
with Cook Children’s Health Care System President and
CEO Rick W. Merrill, who also rode in the Grand Entry
for the second year in a row.
Our community has truly embraced this event, and
your generosity is making a difference for the babies and
families in the Cook Children’s NICU. Cook Children’s
Day at the Rodeo makes it possible for us to enhance
programs that focus on strengthening the family unit,
and provide treatment to patients in our NICU. Because
of this day, more babies will grow up to live their dreams,
just like Darby, who plans to pursue a nursing degree
and become a Cook Children’s NICU nurse.

Madison, Chance and Abigail McNair
Young philanthropists
TO THE McNair
family, COOK CHILDREN’S IS LIKE A SECOND HOME AND
GIVING BACK IS PART OF THEIR HEALING PROCESS.
The McNair children, Chance, 21, Madison, 18, and
Abigail, 17, were each born with medical issues that
they’ve had to address their whole lives.
In 2001, they were given the probable diagnosis
of mitochondrial disease, but didn’t receive genetic
confirmation until 2008. Mitochondrial disease is an
inherited chronic illness that can be present at birth
or develop later in life. It causes debilitating physical,
developmental and cognitive disabilities. Because the
disease presents itself differently in each individual, it can
be very challenging to diagnose. And while the disease
affects each of them differently, it doesn’t hold any of them
back and it certainly doesn’t define them.
“Chance, Madi and Abbey
began volunteering at a very
young age, so giving back to
others truly is a part of who
they are,” said their mother,
Heather McNair.
They have a long history with the medical world,
seeing doctors and specialists across the state and the
country. Through their involvement with different medical
institutions, foundations and charities, each of the McNair
children has been on the receiving end of generosity. But,
more importantly, and they would say more meaningfully,
they have all been on the giving end even more.
“Chance, Madi and Abbey began volunteering at a very
young age, so giving back to others truly is a part of who
they are,” said their mother Heather McNair. “Whatever
any organization does for us, as wonderful as that is, it is
made ten times better if we have the opportunity to give
back and say ‘thank you’.”
Because of their diagnoses, Cook Children’s has become
their medical home. They spend a lot of time at the medical
center, but not all of it is in an exam room. Each of the
McNair children has gifts that they share with the patients
at Cook Children’s.
For Chance, it’s music. He spends time in the recording
studio in the Child Life Zone, participating in the music
experience. He’s also working on a documentary about
how music is used in medicine, featuring interviews with
some of our Cook Children’s staff.
Abbey is an artist and has created several pieces that are
displayed throughout the medical center. Her art has also
been made into keepsakes and cards through the From the
heART and Cards for Kids programs, with both benefiting
Cook Children’s. Abbey enjoys music and is part of the
music experience, as well.
Madi is a photographer and is in the planning stages
of organizing her own fundraiser that will benefit
the Psychology department, because she feels it is
often overlooked by society. The event, of course, will
incorporate the talents of her siblings.
The McNair family serves on several committees at
Cook Children’s, including the Youth Advisory Council
and the Family Advisory Council. Beyond Cook Children’s,
they are also involved with numerous other organizations
where they volunteer their time and talents to help other
children and their families.
As young adults now, Chance, Madi and Abbey have
grown into very giving individuals with hearts for helping
others. They have certainly given back more than
Cook Children’s can possibly give to them.

Exploring the dangers of
playing football
COOK CHILDREN’S PEDIATRICIAN Justin
Smith, M.D., ALSO KNOWN AS THE DOC SMITTY,
ADDRESSES THE CONCERNS OF REPETITIVE TRAUMA AND CONCUSSIONS.
When San Francisco 49ers linebacker Chris Borland
retired after a very successful rookie season, people were
confused.
He’s not hurt and had a presumably bright future in
the NFL.
So, why did he retire?
In light of the recent focus on repetitive trauma,
concussions and brain injuries, he decided that it was in
his best interest to stop playing football.
Look at it this way: After years of playing football,
starting at a very young age, succeeding in high school
and later at the University of Wisconsin, he reached the
pinnacle of his sport and decided it was better for his
health to walk away than to keep playing. Granted, he’s
only one player and many, many more will continue to
make the decision to go back to training camp in July.
Most football players will never reach that point where
they’ll have to decide if the NFL is right for them. I played
junior high football, but didn’t move on to high school
football. I like to tell myself that I was making sure I was
protected from injury for tennis season (Truth is, I was
probably a little scared of being small and getting hit by
bigger high school kids. Sorry for lying, Coach West).
If you look at the research, it seems like cumulative
trauma is the issue. The older and bigger you get and the
longer you play, the number and the force of the traumas
increase. The rules are changing in an attempt to make the
sport safer. But, I’m sure many of you will read this and
worry about your young football players.
My sons haven’t asked to play football yet. At 5 and 3, I
think the level of risk for concussion is higher when I pick
them up and throw them as high as I can in the air, barely
grabbing them before they crash into the ground. But
living in the middle of Texas, football country, and having
an older son built like a perfect tight end and having a
younger son with a canon for an arm, I am sure that is a
conversation we will have some day.
I wonder if someday we’ll look back on the days when
football was played and think, “I can’t believe that they
used to do that to themselves.” Or, will the sport look so
different that we will barely recognize it?
What about you? Do you have concerns about your
kids playing football?

other issues The Doc Smitty is tackling.

COOK CHILDREN’S EMPLOYEES RAISED $701,144.41 THROUGH THIS
YEAR’S EMPLOYEES CARE CAMPAIGN, $26,493 MORE THAN LAST
YEAR. THE CAMPAIGN SUPPORTED OUR GREATEST NEED AND THE
GATEWAY GARDEN TO COOK CHILDREN’S MEDICAL CENTER. THE
GREATEST NEED FUND ALLOWS US TO PURCHASE LIFE-SAVING
MEDICAL EQUIPMENT, GROW OUR PROGRAMS AND PROVIDE CARE TO
CHILDREN WHOSE FAMILIES COULD NOT OTHERWISE AFFORD IT. THE
GATEWAY TO COOK CHILDREN’S FUND SUPPORTS A UNIQUE GREEN
SPACE IN FRONT OF COOK CHILDREN’S MEDICAL CENTER. ONCE
AGAIN, OUR EMPLOYEES DEMONSTRATED THEIR COMMITMENT TO
OUR PATIENT FAMILIES BY NOT ONLY SUPPORTING THIS EFFORT, BUT
BY GIVING EVEN MORE THAN THEY EVER HAVE BEFORE.
