PYHÄJÄRVI
Welcome!
PYHÄJÄRVI
The Hiisi tale of Pyhäjärvi
"There was a hiisi or tihu nest at Emoniemi. This
is how Emoniemi got its name (emo = mother).
The mother stayed there and the son went to
live at Hiienvuori (= Hiisi mountain). That mountain is located on the cape, that is now known
as Hiienniemi (Hiisi cape). Then some people
started building a manor house at Hiienniemi.
Hiisi gathered his belongings and fled the mountain, taking some nest rocks with him which he
carried on his back. The imprint can still be seen.
He thought that there are no rocks at Emoniemi. He then started off to Emoniemi. He waded
through Hiiensalmi (Hiisi inlet) to Kätkytniemi.
His load was too heavy to carry, so he left a cradle at Kätkytniemi, which is how the place got its
name (kätkyt = cradle). He continued walking
towards Itkonniemi. There he cried, as he had
to wade through a wide sound. Thus Itkonniemi got its name (itkeä = cry). He waded to Huhmarniemi, and to lessen his load he left there a
mortar, thus the name Huhmarniemi (huhmare
= mortar).
Then he waded to Kynnäänniemi and continued
across Kotalahti to Tuoriniemi and from there to
Emoniemi. There water got into this boot, although the boot legs on both shoes were made
out of the hide of seven mares. He dropped the
rock load from his back, and at that spot one
can still see Hiienkari (Hiisi rock). Then he backtracked all the way to Huhmarniemi and headed
towards the other side of Emoniemi. When he
reached mainland, he played his kantele (traditional Finnish string instrument) rejoicing the
end of such a troublesome journey. That shore
is now called Kannelhiekka (kannel = another
name for kantele, hiekka = sand). From there
he headed towards Vänni. He came across a large pack of wolves. He broke a thick birch trunk
and beat up the wolves. That place is now called
Susipiiska (Wolf Whip). Then he continued his
journey to Havukkasyvänmaki and lived there.
Now there is a house called Hiisi or Hienaho."
This is what Kuoppas-Hiski told next to the Lamminaho store on the bank of the ditch in 1951.
Pyhäjärvi as a part of Ostrobothnia in the past...
About 10600 years ago the glacier margin was situated on
the Western slope of the plains of Havukkamäeharju and
Vuohtomäki. The sea bay closed during the final stage of the
Yoldia Sea 9600 years ago. So Pyhäjärvi came into existence.
Iso – Murtomäki, the oldest settlement of pre–historic times,
dates back to this period.
Hunter-gatherers and fishermen have lived for thousands of
years on the shores of Lake Pyhäjärvi. According to academic
Kustaa Vilkuna the name “pyhä”, which can be found in numerous old place names, refers to property of villages or parishes separated from other domains. The loanword “pyhä”
originates from the Bronze Age and means border.
Lake Pyhäjärvi is a boundary lake. The names of the big terrains Pyhäjärvi, Emoniemie and Vuotomäki are as old as the
continuous economic activities of the human population itself.
Owing to the existence of two more communities with the name Pyhäjärvi in the Finnish
province Uusimaa (Pyhäjärvi Ul) and the
Karelian province Viipuri (Pyhäjärvi Vpl), as a
means of distiction, Pyhäjärvi OI (Pyhäjärvi
in the province of Oulu) used to be the official name for the community of Pyhäjärvi.
Since Pyhäjärvi Vpl was part of the former
Finnish territories lost in war and Pyhäjärvi
Iron axes originating from the early 9th century were found
in the region of “Pyhäjokilaakso”. The 1000-year-old name
“Pyhäjärvi” comes from the Iron Age.
People from Tavastia andKainuu met on the old Lappish
fishing grounds in Pyhäjärvi. Tax investigators from Karelia
travelled to Ostrobothnia via Pyhäjärvi. The first registered
land tax data go back to the year 1547. Slashers-and-burners
from Savonia forced their way into the hunting grounds of
the people from Tavastia in the river country of Pyhäjoki.
People from Jämsä took revenge and burned down settlements in Pyhäjoki and Kalajoki. As a result of this Olli Tikka,
an inhabitant of Pyhäjärvi, went to King Gustav Wasa who
confirmed and safeguarded the new settlers’ rights. In this
document the name Pihajerfvui, Pyhäjärvi, appears in written form for the first time in history.
Ul became part of Karkkila in 1969, Pyhäjärvi
in the province of Oulu was the only Finnish
province named Pyhäjärvi. Thus the distinctive name Ol lost its sense and was not used
anymore. Since 1993 Pyhäjärvi has town
status, which led to the replacement of the
name Pyhäjärvi by Pyhäsalmi.
On 1 January 1993 the town got its original
name Pyhäjärvi back.
Rillankivi
Numerous legends are woven round the stone “Rillankivi”, which is the common border stone of the
three historical provinces Ostrobothnia, Tavastia and
Savonia. The Swedish speaking people of the Finnish
west coast call the stone „Trilandsten“ , which means
The Stone of Three Countries.
The pre-historic waterway between Lake Ladoga and
the northern part of the Gulf of Bothnia, which was
used by the Karelians for the last time, lead over Rillankivi, Pyhäjärvi and Pyhäjoki.
Today the three provinces Ostrobothnia, Central Finland and Northern Savonia impersonated by Pyhäjäri,
Pihtipudas und Pielavesi meet at Rillankivi. The offices
of the regional governments of Northern, Eastern and
Central Finland, whose territories meet on the ridge
of Rillankivi, are located in Oulu, Mikkeli und Vaasa.

Pyhäjärvi today...
Nowadays you can practice nearly every spare
time activity in our idyllic little town.
Its infrastructure provides splendid facilities for
people who are active. Hustle and bustle dominates our market square, not only during the local town festival “Kihu”, but also on the weekly
market days and summer evenings.
No matter if by car, bus or train, it is easy to come
here. We even have our own little airport.
”
Pyhäjärvi is a border district in the real sense of the
word. It is part of Savonia, Ostrobothnia and Central
Finland at the same time.
It was here where Paavo Ruotsalainen and Jonas Lagus shook their hands and reached agreement and
people have sung psalms for generations. People’s
everyday life and festivities have been regulated by
Christianity.

Research and innovation
At the beginning of the 1990ies it was realized that the
mine in Pyhäjärvi has very good prerequisites for experimental physics. Thus the town of Pyhäjärvi together
with various panels of experts initiated a corresponding
project.
The EMMA experiment is carried out in a depth of 75
meters in one of the caverns. The experiment investigates the composition of high energy particles, cosmic
rays, coming from the space. It is hoped that the results
give more light on the properties of the universe.
Underground Center for Science and R&D www.calliolab.com
Callio Lab is a new environment for underground research and
other activities. The laboratory is located in the Pyhäsalmi Mine
which is a copper and zinc mine being the oldest operating mine
in Finland and the deepest active hard rock mine in Europe with
the depth of 1444 metres.
The infrastructure of the mine is excellent for various physics
experiments due to the large rock overburden, but it can also
serve for other fields of sciences, offering unique facilities and a
wealth of opportunities for a variety of scientific and commercial purposes.

Owing to its borderline Finland functions as a link
between the European Union and Russia in international transport, whose importance has intensified since the opening of the Eastern borders.
As a major road link to Europe, Finnish national road
4 has a considerably high amount of transport.
The intersection halfway between Oulu and Jyväskylä, where main road 27, connecting the Finnish
provinces Savonia and Ostrobothnia, crosses Finnish national road 4, is a renowned stopping place
for national and international transport.
The new TRANSPARK Traffic Service Center at the
intersection, whose business idea it is to provide
the necessary peripheral services for road users, is
a joint project of the municipality of Pyhäjärvi and
Pyhäjärvi Development Ltd (Pyhäjärven Kehitys
Oy).
www.transpark.fi
The main businesses being in operation at the
intersection are the ABC traffic boutique and
the restaurant Vaskikello.
JTM-Motors Ay, Pyhäjärven RK Huolto (24/7)
and Vianor (24/7) offer complex vehicle service: from two-wheel to truck vehicle arsenal. Other companies operating at the intersection are
NC-taso, Peura-talot Oy and Rönkön puutarha,
Vaakaporauspalvelu VPP Oy, Pikapaja Oy,
RSP-Trans Oy, Veljekset Silvennoinen Oy and
Kiantama Oy.
The stone park (Transpark kivipuisto) is a stone and green garden for outside construction.
Its premises can be rent as exhibition space by
local entrepreneurs. The infocenter is open in
summer.
