Whether it happens to us or to an associate we’re trying to cheer up, the answer centers around one word: perseverance. The value of courage, persistence, and perseverance has rarely been illustrated more convincingly than the life story of this man (his age appears in the column on the right): Age Failed in business 22 Ran for legislature—defeated 23 Again failed in business 24 Sweetheart died 26 Had a nervous breakdown 27 Defeated for Speaker 29 Defeated for Congress 39 Defeated for Senate 46 Defeated for Vice President 47 Defeated for Senate 49 Elected President of the United States 51 That’s the record of Abraham Lincoln. Bits and Pieces, Vol. R/No. 10. p. 5 Golfer Arnold Palmer has never flaunted his success. Although he has won hundreds of trophies and awards, the only trophy in his office is a battered little cup that he got for his first professional win at the Canadian Open in 1955. In addition to the cup, he has a lone framed plaque on the wall. The plaque tells you why he has been successful on and off the golf course. It reads: If you think you are beaten, you are. If you think you dare not, you don’t. If you like to win but think you can’t, It’s almost certain that you won’t. Life’s battles don’t always go To the stronger woman or man, But sooner or later, whose who win Are those who think they can. Bits and Pieces, Vol. R/No. 10. p. 11 Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for “fifth of May) is a celebration held on May 5. it is celebrated nationwide in the United States and regionally in Mexico, primarily in the state of Puebla, where the holiday is called El Dia de la Batalla de Puebla (English: The Day of the Battle of Puebla). The date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. In the state of Puebla, the date is observed to commemorate the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. Contrary to widespread, popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day—the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico—which is actually celebrated on September 16. Senior Exam Answers: 1. The Hundred Years War lasted 116 years. 2. Panama hats are made in Ecuador. 3. Sheep and Horses provide cat gut. 4. October Revolution is celebrated in November. 5.
