Booth Western Art Museum hosts
fourth “Sweet Tea” Triennial
Exhibition: On January 9, residents from
Clairmont Place may board our bus to travel to
Cartersville, GA to go to the Booth Western Art
Museum. “ Featuring over 90 rarely seen works of art
from more than 50 public and private collections
throughout the Southeast. Western American Art South
of the Sweet Tea Line lV offers a visual feast.” When
residents from Clairmont Place visited the Museum two
years ago they asked if we could return. We will have
lunch following the museum. Sing up at the Front Desk
by JAN. 2
Saturday at the Cinema: During the month of
January the Saturday movie will be shown at 2:00 PM
and again at 6:30 PM in the Cinema. I am interested in
finding the best times for showing movies. We continue
to ask for updated good DVD’s to show in the Cinema.
Please give us your feedback.
Employee Bonus Event: If you attended the
Employee Bonus event of Monday, Dec. 8, you heard
words of gratitude from the employees in attendance.
Everyone felt so grateful to the residents for the holiday
bonus. It means so much and if you were not there
please know how grateful the employees are. Thank you
to our wonderful residents for the employee bonus. The
entertainment was extra special too!
Craft for February:
Do you have a picture of
yourself or something special you would like to turn
into a jigsaw puzzle? It would make a nice gift for the
family. Bring your picture to the Front Desk and ask
Peggy to copy your picture so that we can make a puzzle
from the copy. See Lynn Mayer for a sample of this
craft project. You’ll love it.
Remembering the Good times in 2014:
Don’t look back, look forward! That is exactly what the
plan is with much to look forward to as we greet a new
year! We had much to do during 2014 whether at
Clairmont Place or with other opportunities with family,
friends, church, travel, etc. With the many outings,
musical entertainment, parties, handchimes, Clairmont
Singers, Lifeline Writers, gardening, exercising, walking
the lake, crafts to make, committees to serve on, guest
speakers, movies to watch and mystery trips to explore
the list goes on and so will we in the new year! Sign up,
show up, live it up!
Health tips for the cold and flu season:
Sweat It Out People who exercise for at least 20
minutes five days a week suffer from half as many colds as
those who get moving just one or two days a week.
Researchers believe that exercise helps raise the number of
immune cells in the body.
Hands Off Be conscious of how often you touch
your face and try to stop doing it, says Yael Halaas, M.D.,
an ear, nose and throat specialist based in New York City.
Flu germs enter the body through the nose, mouth and
eyes, so even a quick three-second eye rub could lead to a
week of sniffling and coughing.
Sweeten Down A diet low in refined sugar
strengthens the immune system and can potentially
protect the body against cold and flu, says Alan Gaby,
M.D., who specializes in nutritional medicine. "Although
there's no research that clearly proves sugar causes more
illness, some doctors have observed that people who
reduce sugar consumption have fewer infections and are
generally healthier overall," he says.
Rest Up Skimp on slumber and you're three times
more likely to catch a cold, according to a Carnegie Mellon
University study. Aim for at least seven hours a night.
Clean Sweep If you're traveling by plane, train or
bus for the holidays, pack some antiseptic wipes in your
carry-on. "Clean your seat and armrests before you settle
in," suggests Halaas.
Wash Away The single most important preventive
measure you can take is to wash your hands, and often.
But don't lather up with hot water. A lukewarm rinse
works just as well for killing bacteria. In fact, an
uncomfortably warm wash dries the skin, which could
cause it to crack, leaving you susceptible to other
infections.
Flu (and Cold) Fighters Fresh fruits, veggies,
lean meats and fish will do a body good year-round, but
adding certain foods to your diet will give your body's
infection-defeating abilities an extra boost, says Bonnie
Taub-Dix, R.D., a member of the Family Circle Health
Advisory Board. Try some—or all—of these.
 Carrots: A diet rich in beta-carotene—also found in
bell peppers, kale, broccoli, sweet potatoes and squash—
protects the lining of the nose, which traps germs before
they can infect you.
 Green Tea: Science backs up what tea drinkers have
known for centuries: Going green keeps you healthy. In a
study at the University of Florida, people who consumed
two cups of green tea daily for three months had 32%
fewer colds than those who didn't imbibe. "If you aren't
crazy about the flavor, add a splash of 100% fruit juice,"
suggests Taub-Dix.
 Nonfat Greek Yogurt: This rich and tangy variety has three times more protein (which helps increase the
number of immune cells in your body) than regular yogurt. It's also chock-full of immune-boosting live and active
cultures.
 Salmon: No doubt you've heard this food is a great source of heart-strengthening omega-3 fatty acids, but one
serving also contains up to 1,000 IU of vitamin D; a University of Colorado, Denver, study found that upping your
intake of the vitamin staves off colds.
Garlic: A compound called allicin fights against bacterial, viral and fungal infections, says Taub-Dix. Plus, in a recent
study, people who took a daily garlic supplement had 36% fewer colds over the course of a year than those who were
given a placebo.
Find Warm Air in Winter
It’s not uncommon to walk outside this time of year and have the cold air “take your breath away.” As you age,
you may have an even harder time breathing as the temperature drops. There are steps you can take to prevent the
coughing, wheezing or congestion that often come along with the cold weather.
Warming up for 30 minutes indoors before you head out for a walk can be helpful. So can wrapping a fleece or
wool scarf loosely around your nose and mouth to keep the air you breathe warm and moist. Of course, if the
problem continues, see your doctor to rule out more serious conditions. Also, be sure to get the flu vaccine to protect
your lungs further – and the pneumonia vaccine, if you need it.
