JOB DESCRIPTION: DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS
Community Organizing and Family Issues is a center for family-focused leadership development and
community organizing. COFI's mission is to build a movement of family focused leaders and
organizers that strengthens the voices of low-income and working families at all levels of civic life from local institutions to the city, state, and federal levels. This is a new position in a small, but
growing, organization that will be modified over time to meet organizational growth needs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. A hands-on position that manages internal operations and systems including financial, human
resources, IT and office administration.
2. Ensures that all activities and operations are performed in compliance with local, state, and
federal regulations and laws governing nonprofit operations.
3. Part of the senior management team to support COFI’s mission, values and growth and
responsible for training and supervising applicable staff.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. To provide fiscal oversight and direction
 Formulate, recommend and implement sound fiscal policies, procedures and controls.
 Oversee and implement day-to-day bill payment, invoicing, payroll and other
accounting/financial processes.
 Ensure that fiscal systems and operating activities are in compliance with local, state and
federal regulations and laws, and grant requirements.
 Prepare financial reports for the Executive Director, the Board, and as needed for internal
and external uses.
 Facilitate the annual financial audit.
 Provide budget input.
2. To oversee office management, IT, and supervise administrative staff
 Oversee all aspects of office management including purchasing, inventory, office equipment,
and IT – keep all office machines functioning (computers, phones/fax, copier, etc.)
 Liaison with technology consultants and other vendors, as needed; troubleshoot hardware
and software issues, with support from tech consultants; and assist staff in the efficient use
of technology.
 Hire, develop, and evaluate administrative staff – working with them to develop
weekly/quarterly work plans and hold them accountable to fulfilling their work plans.

3. To oversee human resources and manage health care and other benefit-related products and
services delivered to COFI employees
 Provide new employee general orientation.
 Work to drive continuous improvement of employee benefit plans including product and
vendor selection, product development, and plan design.
 Negotiate contracts, manage enrollment, ensure federal and IRS compliance, provide plan
education and advice to employees, investigate and resolve issues, oversee year-end
reporting and tracking.
 Conduct analysis and benchmarking for salary and benefits; maintain personnel policies/files.
 Ensure that program departments develop and maintain department-specific staff
development plans, training and evaluation system.
 Oversee federal work study students – including recruitment, applications and students.
4. To contribute to the development and management of an effective COFI team
 Attend and actively participate in all staff meetings.
 Prepare weekly and quarterly work plans and reports.
 Annual performance review and supervisor review.
 Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS









At least 5 years nonprofit management experience – preferably in social justice work.
At least 2 years supervisory experience, with a proven record of success.
Bachelor’s Degree with preference for nonprofit management or finance degree.
Excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with
accounting software and database management; able to troubleshoot technical and
computer issues.
Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and producing high-quality work.
Comfortable working with a team; team building skills.
Strong writing, personal communication, and editing skills.
Knowledge, understanding of and commitment to the empowerment of low and moderateincome families and experience working with diverse communities.
English/Spanish bilingual desirable.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports directly to the Executive Director




Exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act, as an executive position
Regular full time – though would consider part-time
Salary range: $50,000 to $66,000 annually (with generous benefits)
