JOB SUMMARY
The Nursing Dept. Head (NDH) assumes authority, responsibility, and accountability for the delivery of nursing services
provided in the homecare and/or facility settings.
Minimum Requirements
 Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; Bachelor’s degree in nursing required
 Registered nurse with current license to practice in both Oregon and Washington
 Minimum of five years of clinical experience including two years in a managerial role in a healthcare environment;
preferably a hospice environment
 Demonstrated skills in administrative performance with strong written/oral communication
 Comprehensive knowledge of nursing practice, applicable rules and regulations, and industry standards pertaining
to hospice care
 Experience in development of administrative policies and procedures as well as design of programs for
implementation and compliance
 Computer proficiency and working knowledge of MS programs
 Current CPR certification
Areas of Accountability
 Maintain absolute confidentiality of all information pertaining to patients, families, and staff and adhere to all
HIPAA rules
 Oversee staff’s delivery of patient care and compliance with all agency policies; including day to day staffing for
patient care needs, team development, mentoring, and skill building
 Outreach to community agencies, health care settings, and referral partners
Primary Responsibilities
















Coordinate nursing services to patients/families; ensuring all care is provided with respect for patient rights
Assist in the development of agency goals
Assist with the development and implementation of HoH policies and procedures
Collaborate with patients, families, facility staff, other providers, and hospice staff to ensure patient/family
satisfaction
Maintain Nursing and Hospice Aide competency by pursuing education and training opportunities
Proactively identify opportunities to improve the patient and family experience of care
Evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of resources
Work with the Medical Director and Asst. Medical Director, QAPI, and other Dept. Heads to assure that clinical
protocols, utilization review, case management, quality assurance, and compliance programs are implemented
according to policies
Oversee DME, Medication, and Lab/Hospital bills for appropriateness and accuracy
Oversee Hospiscripts
Oversee Clinical supplies (ordering, stocking, equipment, exceptions) for appropriateness and accuracy
Oversee Clinical administrative billing system
Oversee Certs/ReCerts
Oversee Surveys and Survey Prep
Participate in professional and community health and welfare activities
Take Call as needed

Supervisory Responsibilities









Supervise RNs, HAs, and clinical administrative staff
Participate in recruitment, selection, orientation, retention, coaching, and discipline of direct reports
Conduct supervisory visits to allow for observation of clinical performance of assigned team members
Conduct 45 and 90 day reviews as well as annual evaluations for direct reports—consult with other supervisors in
cases where the staff member has multiple areas for responsibility—provide constructive feedback and assistance
to support performance—coach individuals regarding job description boundaries
Assess and coordinate continuing education needs for the department
Ensure staffing ratios meet the needs of HoH patients; oversee Call schedule
Review and approve bi-weekly timesheets including overtime and mileage
Coach staff members in identifying performance barriers; explore, pinpoint, and implement appropriate solutions
Rotate Supervisor On-Call weekends
Committee/Meeting Responsibilities






Coordinate and participate in bi-weekly Inter Disciplinary Group (IDG) meetings
Coordinate, lead, and participate in RN meetings, HA meetings, and Survey Prep meetings
Participate in Policies & Procedures, QAPI, Safety, Streamlining, and Dept. Head meetings
Attend conferences as appropriate
Participate in volunteer orientations, training, and education as requested
Other responsibilities as directed by the President/CEO
Other Non-Physical Requirements
 Must have valid Driver’s License, must furnish own transportation
 Must maintain current automobile insurance coverage
Physical and Environmental Demands and/or Conditions
 Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds, and occasionally lift
and/or move up to 40 pounds.
 Perform repetitive tasks and/or motions; have good manual dexterity and good eye-hand-foot coordination
 Distinguish colors and have clarity of vision with or without corrective lenses at all times
 Able to hear alarms, telephone, and normal speaking voice
Working Conditions
 There may be a fluctuating work load with periods of stress and deadlines.
 May be exposed to blood, body tissue and fluids regularly, as well as other hazardous waste materials.
 May be exposed periodically to physical injury, burns, noise, environmental stress, and some electrical hazards.
