A Message from Amy...
Happy New Year! I am looking forward to a successful and prosperous 2016 here at St. Dominic
Village. I want to thank all of our donors that so generously gave to us during 2015, and especially
during our End of Year Campaign to help renovate Warren Chapel. Warren Chapel is truly the heart of
our community and it deserves a much needed facelift. Check back in the months to come to see what
we were able to do with the funds that were raised! I also want to extend a special “Thank You” to all
of our Patron Corps members. These are individuals who at a minimum donate $1,000.00 annually to
St. Dominic Village. Roger and Carole Sahni were our Patron Corp Chairs last year and I am looking
forward to another successful year under their leadership. These are the funds that allow St. Dominic
Village to do some amazing things that we otherwise could not do.
With our new year, St. Dominic Village will see much growth and changes on campus. While it is of course important to
honor and respect all of the rich history that makes St. Dominic Village truly unique, it is exciting to see change in our
community. Two examples of this change are the rebranding of our Mission Statement and Core Values. The Board of
Directors, staff and a group of Residents dedicated time to meet and share with HandBuilt Brands Advertising Agency to
help us streamline and refresh our Mission Statement and Core Values. During these meetings we discussed what makes
St. Dominic Village unique and what our residents love about living here. Our Mission embodies what we as a community strive to do each and every day, that is “Caring for Our Elders with the Compassion of Christ”. Our Core Values have
been updated to Love, Quality Care, Individuality and Christ-Like. As you read through the newsletter you will see the
new Core Values and how they are surrounded by the Fruits of the Holy Spirit. Both of these items will be something that
you will see when on campus, and we believe that it helps keep us focused on the Mission and Ministry of St Dominic
Village.
The Board of Directors, along with staff, are working on putting the five year Strategic Plan into effect. The Board spent
the last year focusing on the current state of SDV and where we, along with the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, want
it to go. Through our committees, we are excited about some of the plans that we are putting into place, and I’m excited
to keep you updated as some of our plans become a reality.

St. Dominic Village kicks off the New Year with a new Mission
Statement and Core Values!

The Mission Statement and Core Values of an
organization are of significant importance. They not only
define your organization but more importantly they tell
the community what it is that you do. Our previous
Mission Statement and Core Values were very long and
were not something that could be remembered or recited
by our residents and staff.
Over the last several months St. Dominic Village, worked
with Hand Built Brands (a Marketing Consultancy), to
help us redefine and streamline both our Mission and
Core Values. This company met with the Board of
Directors, staff and a group of residents to really get a
feel for St. Dominic Village and what it is that we do and
how best to represent this to the community.
After much thought and exchanging of ideas and concepts, what was finally agreed upon
is what you see here;our mission is now, “Caring for Our Elders with the Compassion of
Christ”. It is a statement that we have been using for years, and truly is at the heart of
what we do.
Our new Core Values are now Love, Quality Care, Individuality and Christ Like. These are
the qualities that we as an organization strive for our employees to show our residents.
These Core Values are surrounded by the fruits of the Holy Spirit. I hope these speak to
you as they did to everyone who was involved in the rebranding process. We are truly
moving in the right direction and both our new Mission Statement and Core Values help
lead us each and everyday.

The Origins of the Dominican Order

It is often said that St. Dominic did not “found” an order as much as he “befriended”
an order. This was considered true because the first Dominicans were the women who
were followers of Dominic and lived a cloistered life at Prouille, France. After gathering
the women, men became his followers and the Dominican Order
continued to grow.
All Dominicans are part of the Order of Preachers.
That is why Dominicans identify themselves with the
initials “O.P.” after their names. Therefore, all
Dominicans are called to preach God’s word, but do so
in different ways.
Great men and women have joined the Dominicans over
the years.
St. Catherine, a lay woman, was considered a “mystic in
the marketplace”. She spent her life caring for others
and in deep prayer. She also was in
communication with several popes and urged Pope
Gregory XI to return to Rome from Avignon and bring
unity back to the church. She preached with her good
works and with her letter writing.
St. Fra Angelico was a magnificent artist who preached with his
painting.
St. Martin de Porres, another Dominican, was a lay brother who spent his life caring for
the poor. He preached with his kindness and care for the less fortunate.
Though Dominic often spent all night in prayer and frequently wept for the pain of the
world, he was very accepting of others and never demanded strict observance of rules.
The Dominicans celebrated their 800 Year Jubilee this year on November 7th 2015. It
is a special time to thank God for the gift of Dominic and his vision.

Fall Fun at St. Dominic Village
We love seeing our residents have a good time and this past Halloween, our residents enjoyed
themselves thoroughly. We had music, food, fun and a costume contest... a perfect way to kick
off the fall season!

Recognizing Our Veterans
On Wednesday, November 11, 2015, as we do every
year, we recognized and paid homage to our men and
women who have served and/or currently serve in the
military.
We welcomed special guests, recited songs and poems
of patriotism and enjoyed fellowship and food.
We are home to several men and women who have
served in the armed services. We humbly thank you for
your service.

Of Palm & Ashes
Beginning on January 25th, a basket will be available in Warren Chapel in
which to place your blessed palms from last year.
On February 8th, immediately following the 8:15 a.m. Mass, we will have
a ritual palm burning. The ashes of the blessed palms will be used on Ash
Wednesday as we receive the sign of the cross and once again begin our
Lenten Journey.

Nursing Station 1 Gets Revamped!
Nursing Station 1 has completed its initial phase of the new
face lift, and we are excited about the results.
Work on Station 1 kicked off on December 7th and was
completed by December 20th.
The new nursing station will certainly make our daily
functions more efficient and convenient. New computers
have been installed and the medication and treatment rooms
were also renovated during the process.
Physician Spotlight
by Meg Pohodich, MBA, Director of Marketing and Admissions
Dr. Julia Reyser joined the St. Dominic Village family in 2005 and has gone above and beyond in providing
outstanding resident care. She received her MD from Azerbaijan Medical University, completed her
residency at University of Texas Health and Science Center and her fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine
in Houston, Texas. She has a clinic at Quentin Mease Hospital and is also the Assistant Professor for
geriatric medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. She is board certified in family medicine as well as geriatrics. Our residents love her as she is easy to talk to, very knowledgeable, and
she is fluent in Russian. She reminds us that “age is only a number” and to
“keep an active life”!
Dr. Reyser has a full plate as she sees many residents in the Rehabilitation
and Nursing Center, as well as residents in Independent Living and Assisted

Stations of the Cross
The Stations of the Cross is a Lenten devotion that offers witness to Jesus’ Passion and Death.
At each station we use our senses and our imagination to reflect prayerfully upon Jesus’
suffering, death, and resurrection and reflect on Christ’s love for us.
It is a powerful way to contemplate, and enter into, the mystery of Jesus’ gift of
himself to us.
From the earliest of days, followers of Jesus told the story of his passion, death and
resurrection. When pilgrims came to see Jerusalem, they were anxious to see the
sites where Jesus was. These sites become important holy connections with Jesus.
Eventually, following in the footsteps of the Lord, along the way of the cross, became a part of
the pilgrimage visit. The stations, as we know them today, came about when it was no longer
easy or even possible to visit the holy sites. In the 1500’s, villages all over Europe started
creating “replicas” of the way of the cross, with small shrines commemorating the places along
the route in Jerusalem. Eventually, these shrines became the set of 14 stations we now know
and they have been placed in almost every Catholic Church in the world.

Christmas at the Village
We love the holidays here at St. Dominic Village. Christmas was celebrated in a big way
around the Village. Our two Open Houses were a big success with lots
of family, friends and visitors enjoying food, fun and fellowship with our
residents. The Ambassadors, a live band, performed at both
parties held on December 10th and December 14th. Residents and
guests enjoyed a medley of classic oldie but goodies, Christmas tunes
and big band jazz tunes of the 1940’s.
The following week our residents were surprised by a visit from Old
St. Nick himself. He visited with each resident and brought presents for
all.
Our Lady of Guadalupe Celebration at
St. Dominic Village
On December 11th, St. Dominic Village and the
St. Dominic Chancery joined to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of
Guadalupe. Residents and staff gathered in the Charlotte Hall
Social Area to enjoy a festive, cermonial dance, as well as food
and fellowship in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Vincent Todom-Kuate, RN - Highlights from the Nursing Department

Vincent Todum-Kuate is originally from Cameroon,
Africa. Prior to moving to the
United States, Vincent attained a Master’s Degree in
Private Law. In 2007, he moved to the U.S. and had
the opportunity to live in various cities before moving
to Houston.
Vincent speaks multiple languages, his primary
language being French. He has been with
St. Dominic Village since November of 2011.
He started out as a CNA, where he excelled in his
ability to lead and work with his peers and
residents. He worked mainly on Maloney Hall
(Priest wing) of the Rehabilitation and Nursing
Center.
In May of 2014, Vincent graduated from Houston
Community College with his degree in Nursing and is a Registered Nurse. Shortly after
graduating, he was promoted to the role of Charge Nurse in the Priest wing. Vincent
has excellent clinical and
interpersonal skills. He exemplifies professionalism and confidence. His duties and
responsibilities are to oversee and manage the facility for the evening shift and oversee
admissions after hours and manage staff.
He has become a true asset to the clinical team, is a pleasure to work with and is
respected by his peers and the Priests and residents he is charged to care for. He has
built long lasting relationships with staff and residents.
We welcome Florence Ricciardello to the St. Dominic Village
family. Florence is our new Marketing Liaision. Florence joined us
in December with valuable experience in the senior care industry.
She has lived in Houston for over thirty years and attended the
University of Houston, main campus. She is married and has a
beautiful blended family of seven children, and five
grandchildren. Florence and her husband are members of
St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Houston, TX.
We are so pleased she chose to join our team.

Live and Enjoy Independent Living at St. Dominic Village

St. Dominic Village invites those who have never visited our campus and/or have not been here
in a while, to come tour our beautiful campus. We have an awesome variety of Independent Living apartments and they are filling up fast! We have small studios, starting at $1350 per month.
Our apartments that include a kitchen and washer/dryer lease for $3000 per month; we have a
variety of floorplans for you to view.
Our most popular room is our small studio and they are
going fast as well! Included in your rent at St. Dominic
Village are: three hot meals per day, seven days a week
and weekly housekeeping in which you will have your
room vacuumed and dusted, trash taken out and
bathroom cleaned. Your monthly rent also includes
water, electricity, cable, Wi-Fi and a full calendar of
events. Each room has a bedroom, full bathroom,
closet, small refrigerator, and an area for a microwave
and coffee pot. All rooms have individual thermostat
control and an emergency call system in case of an emergency. We want our residents to
maintain their independence as long as possible.
With most senior care communities, there is typically a buy-in or an entrance fee. Currently,
we have a reduced one-time community fee of $1,000. This goes towards the maintenance of the
campus, as well as fresh paint and carpet in rooms when a new resident moves in. This reduced
fee is currently a special and will not last long. As a ministry of the Archdiocese of GalvestonHouston and the only Catholic senior care community in Houston, we provide a rich spiritual
environment for people of all faiths through Warren Chapel and other spiritual activities around
campus. You will be able to attend daily Mass and Rosary and many other faith-based activities
with other residents, including weekly non-denominational services.

community and provides 27 secure acres to walk your dog and enjoy the outdoors. Call us today
