Saint Pius X CATHOLIC CHURCH AND SCHOOL “To renew all things in Christ” Welcome to St. Pius X Parish • April 1, 2012 EASTER The Resurrection of the Lord Dear Friends, the empty tomb! Perhaps there is no other image that so aptly portrays our belief in the reality of the resurrection of Our Lord. Ordinarily, tombs are reminiscent of the stark reality of death. Tombs are sealed, oppressive, pungent, and devoid of life. The image of the empty tomb that is presented to us in the Gospel today, is another story. It is unsealed, empty, imbued with light and life, and exudes a kind of radiance and joy! It is a kind of paradoxical void that beckons belief! Just last year, I had the privilege of celebrating Mass at the Holy Sepulcher (the tomb of Jesus)in Jerusalem. I consider it one of the highlights of my priesthood. What made that moment extra special, apart from being at 6:30 in the morning when it was unusually quiet, was the fact that it was a Mass sung by the Franciscan monks. I was given precisely 45 minutes within which to celebrate the Mass. To exceed that time limit, would have been to incur the ire of the Greek Orthodox monks who took over custodianship of the place after us. To help insure that things moved along, I was given an emcee, a slight man whose english vocabulary consisted of approximately two words – “please” and “head”. “Please” had multiple meanings. It essentially meant that I needed to go in whatever direction he indicated. It also meant that I needed to put incense into the censer, read the Gospel, bow, or anything else that would keep things going. “Head” meant that I needed to duck every time I entered or exited the sepulcher, else I might bonk my head on the low entryway. I was grateful for this gentleman’s guidance, especially since I had to go back and forth multiple times. The Liturgy of the Word and various prayers took place outside the tomb. The Liturgy of the Eucharist took place inside the tomb. Even with his warnings, I think I actually did bonk my head a couple of times. Despite the haste and the somewhat rapid nature of the celebration, I found myself awestruck at the realization that I was offering the Sacrifice of the Mass on a temporary altar immediately above the the burial place of Jesus, the Son of God! It was here that the miracle of salvation occurred! It was here that evil was conquered and death was vanquished! It was here that the mystery of Christ’s resurrection brought immeasurable joy! It was here that Peter, the Beloved Disciple, and Mary of Magdala came to belief. Much investigation, and scholarship has examined how authentic the site of the Holy Sepulcher is. Is it the true tomb of Jesus? According to scholars and the most ancient of traditions, there is more certainty about the Holy Sepulcher as being the true resting place of Jesus than there is about the authenticity of most any other holy site in Israel. It may be a wondrous thing to have an opportunity to actually visit the Holy Sepulcher. Yet, how much more wondrous and incomprehensibly privileged it is to participate in the very act of salvation, which is p a r i s h : w w w. s t p i u s x c c . o r g s c h o o l : w w w. s t p i u s x s c h o o l c c . o r g Pastor Fr. Each time we gather around the altar for the Eucharistic Celebration, we enter into the mystery of Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection. Each and every time, we proclaim our belief in that mystery. In fact, our profession is no less significant than that of those disciples who encountered the empty tomb two-thousand years ago. As we celebrate this Easter Sunday, let’s renew our faith. May we peer into the empty tomb with the eyes of faith and reaffirm our belief that Jesus has conquered the grave and promised salvation to all who believe. Happy Easter! A big thank you for a job well-done by these 5th graders from St. Pius X School as they set up and “dressed” the altar for Holy Thursday’s Mass. Those reverencing the altar were: Acadia Tamez, Taylor Skrobarczyk, Matthew Lutz, Brian Kostoch and Charlie Uecker. We were edified by your service. Thank you so much. CARE Boxes Filled Thanks to all who donated snack items to be included among other things, and sent overseas to our military men and women who are stationed in outlying areas, away from the larger camps where items are available for purchase. Many, many “thank you” emails have been received indicating how much everything is appreciated. In the future, we will collect other items for boxes, so please watch the bulletin for those announcements. And thanks, again. S. Army in San Antonio. He was looking forward going to Corpus Christi, his home.A strong swimmer, he thought perhaps he might go to the beach. Instead he was to risk his life repeatedly in the 1919 storm, which hit the city.He worked all day rescuing people who had been trapped by rising water on Chaparral and Water streets, carrying them to safety in the courthouse and city hall. He swam through the flooded Plaza Hotel to be sure that all guests had been taken out. A few minutes’ later waves and floating debris tore the building apart. The next morning Coulter swam to Spohn Hospital located on Corpus Christi beach, the first to arrive carrying word to the terrified refugees that the storm had passed. For his heroism and amazing efforts he was awarded the U. S. Treasury Silver Life Saving Medal and another from the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. Young Coulter left us an example of Christian love of neighbor.
