Mardi Gras is a yearly celebration brought to America originally by
French explorers in 1699, but is better known for the delicious cake
and amazing parades. On February 6 this year, the Endymion parade
took place. It’s one of the biggest and most popular parades in the
world! It started at 4:15 P.M. and went until nightfall. So if you make it to
New Orleans for Mardi Gras next year, I’d be sure to attend this amazing parade! The day after (Feb. 7) at 5:15 P.M., Bacchus, also a very
large and popular parade, takes place and you are sure to get a lot
beads. But there’s more than just parades, King Cake is in season and
tastes better than ever. If you’re in the NOLA area you should stop by
the best King cake bakery in the U.S., Gambino’s! Their delicious cake
is sure to blow your taste buds away! If you can’t make the drive to
New Orleans, you could stop by Three Brothers Bakery here in Houston to taste some NOLA from the comfort of Texas. Thank you and be
sure to eat lots of king cake.

Student Spotlight
By Elisabeth Hayward and Presley Vann
This month’s student spotlight is more than one person. There are, in fact, two people who do
the same activity. The two students we will be talking about are Paige Henderson and Myranda
Sanchez. They both do ballet! Myranda and Paige both train at Houston Ballet. Myranda is in level 4.2 and Paige is in level 5. They both have been performing in the Nutcracker for three years,
and like different things. Myranda likes to put on her point shoes and Paige likes to perform.
Myranda practices for 9 hours a week and Paige practices for 14 hours and 45 minutes a week.
Now you know a little bit about Myranda Sanchez and Paige Henderson and their after school activity!

Valentine’s Day
By: Mandy N. and Fabiola P.
Don’t know what to give your best friend for Valentine’s Day? Don’t have enough money, and
you need it quick? These DIYs are a fun process, and they are guaranteed hits your friends and
family will love it! Here are a few ideas:
Sock Pillows!
These are fun and easy to make. First, you simply cut out 2 heart shapes using the template. Put
heart pieces right side together and stitch around using a backstitch. Next, turn the heart inside
out and stuff with filler. Finally, stitch the opening with a blind stitch. That’s it, you’re done!
Candy Bags!
This DIY could be the easiest ever! First you will need little bags, paint, and any type of candy
that you wish! The fun part is to paint the bag with your chosen color of paint. Finally, just add
your candy and you are done!
Marshmallow Pops
For this, you will need a marshmallow, icing, and a decorative stick. First you will
make your icing in the shape wanted, put it in the freezer, and let it harden. Then just put
everything together, and you’re done!

Super Bowl 50
By Evan Young & Mauricio Cardenas
The Super Bowl is a major event every February, and this year the 12-4 Denver Broncos were matched up
against the 15-1 Carolina Panthers. It was a major event pinning Peyton Manning (the definition of an old school Q),
against Cam Newton who has dominated this year as a dual threat not only throwing the ball, but running it as well.
The Panthers were the clear favorite with Cam Newton leading the league’s most unstoppable offense, but Denver’s number one defense put truth to the phrase “Defense Wins Championships.” The Denver Broncos won, and
they are the champions of the football world, being forever able to hold the 50 th Lombardi Trophy.
Super Bowl 50 was a big story for Peyton Manning. This was predicted to be his final game, and he topped it all off
with a Lombardi Trophy. Peyton Manning, who is 39, has rumors swirling that he will retire after his 17th season in
the NFL.
Cam Newton was a story going into and out of the game. Cam Newton was sacked 7 times, threw a pic, and fumbled twice, one which returned for a TD. Going into the game, he was happy, dancing and having fun. After the
game, he was pouting like a baby. Cam had a hood up and walked out of his postgame interview. He responded
very unprofessionally, and that will scar a wonderful year in his career.
The most exciting story was the Denver defense. The Denver defense totaled
seven sacks and three takeaways. Von Miller was voted MVP because of two
fumbles he caused (one returned for a TD) 2.5 sacks and a really stellar game.
He deserved the MVP, and he gave truth to the phrase “Defense Wins Championships”.
Congratulations to the Denver Broncos!
