Chennai faces a unique pollution
challenge – pollution levels that appear
to be low or moderate, but are not so.

Unlike other mega cities, Chennai represents a
different pollution challenge. Its annual average
pollution levels — though lower than other mega cities
— still vary between moderate to critical. Without the sea
breeze in this coastal city, the peaks could have been
worse

Analysis by CSE exposes steady and rapid
increase in pollution levels, high local impacts and high
traces of toxics making its air dangerous to breathe
·
Despite having better multi-modal public
transport compared to many other mega cities,
motorization rate is high. If two-wheelers are added then
its personal motorization rate exceeds that of Western
cities
·
CSE’s assessment shows how car-centric
infrastructure – flyovers, signal-free roads, foot
overbridges – are converting zero emissions walk trips to
long motorized trips adding enormously to pollution

Careful on driving on roads
• High exposure to vehicular fumes: Vehicles pose a
special challenge. In terms of actual exposure, people are
more vulnerable to vehicular fumes while traveling and in
close proximity to roads. Pollution concentration in our
breath is 3-4 times higher than the ambient air
concentration. In densely-populated cities, more than 5060 per cent of the population lives or works near the
roadside where levels are much higher. This is very
serious in low income neighbourhoods located close to
roads. Road users, public transport users, walkers and
cyclists are the most exposed groups – they are also the
urban majority.
• Vehicles contribute hugely to air pollution: Source
apportionment studies carried out in Chennai by Madras
IIT under the aegis of the Ministry of Environment and
Forests show vehicles contribute 14 per cent of
particulate matter and 68 per cent of nitrogen oxides.
Some other studies show that 35 per cent of PM2.5 in
Chennai comes from vehicles — tinier the particles higher
the share of vehicles.
• Chennai records very high exposure to vehicular
pollution: A study carried out by scientists of University
of Berkeley published in Environmental Science and
Technology in 2012 shows that the exposure to vehicular
fumes (in terms of population-weighted intake fraction, or
the grams of vehicle pollution inhaled per grams of vehicle
pollution emitted) in Chennai (72) is one of the highest in
cities studied in India – third after Kolkata (150) and Delhi
(100).

has put together the most common queries asked by parents
about your children’s vision problems
Everyone has a vision of what children’s eye problems look like:
Squinting, sitting too close to the television, rubbing their eyes.
Though those can be symptoms of vision issues, sometimes
there are no signs your child isn’t seeing well. Here’s what to
watch out for and what to do about it.
How does a child’s vision develop?
In the first few months of life, infants can only see clearly objects
that are 8 to 10 inches from their face. It isn’t until 12 to 16 weeks
that their eyesight begins improving, and they start seeing things
more clearly and further away.
Over the next year, kids then develop depth perception, eye-body
coordination, eye-hand coordination, and the ability to judge
distances. It’s rare for children to have vision problems at this
age.
When you should schedule my child’s first eye exam?
Eye exams for children are extremely important, because 5 to 10
percent of preschoolers and 25 percent of school-aged children
have vision problems. Early identification of a child’s vision
problem can be crucial because children often are more
responsive to treatment when problems are diagnosed early
According to American Eye Doctors association, the infants should
have their first comprehensive eye exam at 6 months of age.
Children then should have additional eye exams at age 3, and just
before they enter the first grade — at about age 5 or 6. If the child
has been prescribed glasses 6 monthly check-up is mandatory.
What are the Common Vision Problems in Children?
Vision problems in kids tend to emerge between 18 months and
4 years old. The most common eye problems are:
Refractive Errors (Myopia- Near Sightedness, Hypermetropia- Far
Sightedness, Astigmatism)
This is probably the most common eye problem and can at times
go undetected in the early stages hence it is important that regular
screening is done. The amount of the error is first determined
after a detailed examination and is usually treated with glasses
which require regular evaluation.
Uneven focus(Amblyopia), where one eye is more farsighted than
the other, affects 2% to 3% of kids. This vision problem is the
hardest to detect, because young children don’t know their vision
is compromised, so they won’t say anything about it hence the
requirement for vision screening. A child’s stronger eye — the one
that sees further, or focuses better — slowly becomes their
dominant eye. The brain starts ignoring the images coming from
the weaker eye, and stops developing the nerve connections
leading to it. The compromised vision in that weaker eye, called
amblyopia or lazy eye, doesn’t have to happen. It can be stopped
and reversed, but it needs to be caught early with a vision
screening.
A crossed or wandering eye (Squint), which troubles 3% to 5% of
children. Symptoms include an eye that drifts or appears crossed
in respect to the other eye,
After detailed examinations the cause is determined and then
treated with special glasses or at times surgery.
What are some common signs that I need to Consultant an
Eye Doctor?
Most of the time, vision problems aren’t obvious, and the best
way to catch issues early is through vision screenings.
Sometimes, though, there are symptoms of eye problems
such as infection, cataracts, or other issues. Warning signs
may include:
Eye rubbing, Tearing, Swelling, Redness, Discharge, Crust,
Sensitivity to light, Droopy eyelids, White, yellow, or gray-white
material in the pupil
If your child has any of these symptoms, or their eyes change
in any way, or you’re worried about their vision, don’t wait until
they’re 3 years old to get that first vision tested. If you have a
concern, it’s always better to be on the safe side.

First and Foremost: Be Yourself
A mistake many brides make for their wedding day is heading in a
dramatically different direction from their normal special-occasion
look. It’s better to start with a makeup style you know you’ll feel
confident in, saysWeinstein. Then you can play with variations at your
makeup trial runs (yes, you do need practice runs!) to up the glam
factor a bit. And there’s a difference between upping the glam factor a
bit and going overboard — piling on makeup is never the answer.
Don’t think you have to overcompensate. It’s your photographer’s job
to catch you at your best angle and in the best light possible. So let
him or her focus on that.
Going With a Pro
When searching for a wedding-makeup expert, you should
experience at least two different practice runs before choosing the
artist you absolutely LOVE. It’s a good idea to make the most out of
your practice runs. That is, wear a favorite dress to each trial run,
then go to dinner afterward with your fiancé or maid of honor (and be
sure to check yourself in the bathroom light). If you still love
your makeup when you get home that night, then it’s the
winning wedding-day look!
Airbrush Foundation vs. Traditional Foundation
For summer brides worried about their makeup coming off,
airbrush foundation (available in select salons) is the perfect
option. It’s sheer and light, but because it’s made with
silicone it won’t budge. It also provides great coverage for
women with skin blemishes or uneven skin tone. Weinstein
uses traditional liquid or cream foundation only as the
finishing touch. It’s important not to apply so much
foundation that it cakes or looks overdone, she says.
DIY Makeup
If you’re doing your own wedding makeup, don’t stress!
Weinstein offers a few pointers that will help you avoid any
bridal-makeup blunders.
Tried and True Cover-ups — When it comes to concealer,
Weinstein applies it over foundation (rather than under) for
better coverage. She swears by Stila’s Cover-up Stick to hide
blemishes and uses Yves Saint Laurent’s Touche Éclat for
dark circles and to brighten the area under the eyes.
Eye Shadow Tips — The type of eye shadow you use
depends on the season. Weinstein says cream shadow is
ideal for summer brides wanting a dewy, youthful look.
Regular eye shadows work best for a fall or winter wedding
when deep, rich colors are most appropriate.
Mind Your Mascara — A waterproof formula a must! You
don’t want your tears of joy ruining your bridal makeup. Just
be sure to have eye makeup remover on hand after the
wedding — waterproof mascara can be tough to remove.
Another tip: If you have dark under-eye circles, don’t apply
mascara on your bottom lashes. This keeps the focus up
and prevents mascara from flaking off and causing more
darkness beneath the eyes.
A Blushing Bride — Cream blushes are great because they
can also be used on your eyes. During the summer months,
you can start by applying bronzer on your face and peachy
blush tones just on the apple of your cheeks. In the colder
months, you can still apply a bronzer, then a deeper-hued
blush over cheeks.
Long-lasting Lip Color — To help your lip color last through
the reception, use a lip stain with a gloss over it. Glosses
are especially beautiful in the summertime; lipstick is best in
the winter.

Miracles of Sai Baba
The villagers of Shirdi and a far
soon found out that this was no
ordinary fakir but an avatar
(incarnation) of a very high
order. He demonstrated through
his miracles and utterances,
the purpose and intention for
which he had come. He would
often say, “My Leela is
inscrutable”. To each one he
met, he imparted knowledge
according to the capacity of the
recipient to absorb it. Baba’s
Leela’s (miracles) were plenty
and varied, and we recount just
a few which occurred during and
after his lifetime.
Baba’s Leelas (Miracles)
Lighting lamps with water
Long before Sai Baba’s fame spread, he was fond of burning
lights in his Masjid and other Temples. But for the oil needed in
those little earthenware lights that he lit, he depended on the
generosity of the grocers of Shirdi. He had made it a rule to
light earthenware lamps in the masjid every evening and he
would call on the grocers for small donations. But there came a
time when the grocers got tired of giving oil free to Sai Baba
and one day they bluntly refused to oblige him, saying they
had no fresh stocks. Without a word of protest Sai Baba
returned to the masjid. Into those earthenware lamps he poured
water and lighted the wicks. The lamps continued to burn deep
into the midnight. The matter came to the notice of the grocers
who now came to Sai Baba with profuse apologies. Wouldn’t
Sai Baba kindly pardon them? Sai Baba pardoned them, but he
warned them never to lie again. “You could have refused to give
me the oil, but did you have to say that you didn’t have fresh
stocks?” he admonished them. But he had made his point
Stopping the rain
There is the story of one Rao Bahadur Moreshwar Fradhan who
had come to Shirdi to take Sai Baba’s darshan along with his
wife. As the couple were about to leave, it began to rain heavily.
Thunder and lightning rent the air. As the Pradhan couple
looked round in dismay, Sai Baba prayed. “Oh Allah!” he
intoned, “let the rains cease. My children are going home. Let
them go peacefully!” The storm thereupon ceased, the
downpour reduced to slight drizzle and the Pradhans were able
to reach their destination safely.
Raising the water level in well
When Sai Baba first came to Shirdi it had of no basic facilities.
There was a well put only in name. It had no natural spring
water and if ever there had been one, it must long ago have
dried up. Water had to be fetched from a distance. When,
therefore, Sai Baba gave his permission to the villagers to
celebrate the Ram Navami Fair, (Baba’s Birthday) the big
problem facing the organizers was one of water supply. So
What should they do but go to Sai Baba with their problem?
“‘Oh yes,” said Sai Baba, ‘so you want plenty of water, do you?
Here, take this and drop it in the well and wait and see.”
“‘This,” turned up to be a platter of flowers on which some
prasad (blessed food) had been placed along with the
remnants of alms Baba had received earlier in the day. The
villagers had no qualms about doing as they were did. Their
faith in Sai Baba was total. No sooner had that platter of
leaves been dropped in the well, it is said, water rose from
the bottom as if by divine command and completely filled it.
And great was the rejoicing of the people.
Saving a child from drowning
One report has it that word had spread that the 3-year old
daughter of a poor man called Babu Kirwandikar had fallen
into the well and had been drowned. When the villagers
rushed to the well they saw the child suspended in mid-air
as if some invisible hand was holding her up! She was
quickly pulled out. Sai Baba was fond of that child who was
often heard to say : I am Baba’s sister!” After this incident,
the villagers took her at her word. “it is all Baba’s Leela”, the
people would say philosophically. They could offer no other
explanation.
Flow of Godavari (river) from Baba’s feet
These were instances of things they had seen with their
own eyes. It was not secondhand information they had
gathered. Sai Baba was to them as real as their homes and
their fields and their cattle and the distant hills.Das Ganu
once had an unforgettable experience. On a festive
occasion, he sought Baba’s permission to go to a place
called Singba on the banks of the Godavari to have a bath in
the holy waters. “No,” Baba replied resolutely, “where is the
need to go all the way when the Godavari is here right at my
feet?” Das Ganu was vexed. He was willing to concede that
Ganga the holy river (Baba frequently referred to Godavari
as Ganga) rose from the feet of Sri Narayana (one among
the Hindu trinity of Gods) himself, but his faith was not deep
enough to believe that the waters of the Godavari could
spring form the feet of his master, Sri Sai. Baba who was
reading Das Ganu’s mind decided that this was the time to
strengthen Das Ganu’s faith. He told his devotee: “come
closer to me and hold the hollow of your palms at my feet!”.
As soon as he did so water flowed freely out of the toes of
the master’s feet and filled the hollow of Das Ganu’s palms
in no time. His joy knew no limits. He sprinkled the water
on his head and his body and distributed some more among
the assembled devotees as tirtha (holy water).

calm, we shout.’ ‘But, why should you shout when the other person is just
next to you? You can as well tell him what you have to say in a soft

Disciples gave some other answers but none satisfied the other
disciples.
Finally the saint explained, . ‘When two people are angry at each other,
their hearts distance a lot. To cover that distance they must shout to be
able to hear each other.
The angrier they are, the stronger they will have to shout to hear each
other to cover that great distance.
What happens when two people fall in love? They don’t shout at each
other but talk softly, Because their hearts are very close. The distance
between them is either nonexistent or very small…’ The saint continued,
‘When they love each other even more, what happens? They do not
speak, only whisper ‘n they get even closer to each other in their love.
Finally they even need not whisper, they only
look at each other ‘n that’s all. That is how
close two people are when they love each
other.’
He looked at his disciples ‘n said. ‘So when
you argue do not let your hearts get distant,
Do not say words that distance each other
more, Or else there will come a day when
the distance is so great that you will not find
the path to return.’
