Spring 2016
The Road Safety Education Newsletter for Early Years Staff
As part of our partnership working with
Good Egg Car Safety, the Road Safety
Team are arranging car seat checks
across Hampshire. The checks are
friendly and free and extremely helpful
to anyone who transports children up to
the age of 12 years old or 135cm.
Our car seat expert will check that your
car seat is suitable for your child’s age
and weight, is compatible with your car
as well as fitted correctly and is tight
enough in your vehicle. With 80% of car
seats needing some alteration during
previous checks, it highlights the
importance of these events and
ensuring that your child is safe on EVERY
trip.
Dates and venues of the events will be
on our website so please visit
www.hants.gov.uk/roadsafety to find
out more information.

These are a fantastic role-play resource for children at Pre
School to be shown how to cross the road safely as well
as reinforcing the message of walking safely and holding an
adult’s hand. You can also demonstrate how to use a zebra
and pelican crossing, creating fun activities with the children
taking it in turns to be the pedestrians and the vehicles. These
are free for Pre Schools and Nurseries to borrow so if you
would like to arrange to hire them, please contact us on
[email protected]. Please note they are very popular and can
only be loaned out for two weeks at a time.

“Every year thousands of tots and infants age 2-7 take part in a special Beep
Beep! Day organised by their nursery, playgroup, child-minder or infant
school, to help save little lives. It's a great way to help children start learning
the road safety basics through fun activities, while raising awareness among
parents and the wider community about protecting children on
roads.” (Brake, 2016)
Why don’t you join the many nurseries or pre-schools who are registering for
one of this year’s Beep Beep! Days to help your children have lots of fun whilst
learning a key life skill. This term’s national Beep Beep! Day is taking place on
13 July however, it is something you can register for and run any day of the year. You can register for a pack online
at www.brake.org.uk/beepbeepday or send an email to [email protected]. Why not also register for Brake’s
FREE termly educators' e-bulletin on their website too, which is packed with road safety updates for you and is a
great way to keep up to date with their work and how you can get involved. See below for a variety of ideas you
can use for your Beep Beep! Day.
Mr Lumpy’s journey
Visit think.direct.gov.uk/education/early-yearsand-primary/ and read the story about Mr Lumpy,
a treasured teddy who loses some stuffing due to
not being strapped up in the car. Reinforce the
importance of wearing a seatbelt by teaching the
car seat click song.
Let’s all do the car seat click
(Sing to the tune of ‘Here we go round
the mulberry bush’)
Let’s all do the car seat click

Giant handprint display
Create a giant poster of children’s hand prints
and write ‘We hold hands’ at the top, and
display it where parents and children can see
it. Use bright colours to also discuss dressing
bright and being seen. Reinforce this activity
with teaching them a song about holding
hands.
This is the way we all
hold hands
(Sing to the tune of ‘Here we
go round the mulberry bush’)
This is the way we all hold hands
All hold hands, all hold hands
