Interclub Challenge Teams 2015
Penny Dalzell is our team trainer & coordinator.
The event is an Obedience Trial & takes place in July. Usually about 40 clubs take
part. This year the event will be hosted by Blacktown DTC at their club grounds,
Glendenning.
During the next few weeks Penny will be selecting and training our team members.
NSDTC usually enters two teams.
One CCD, one Novice, two Open & one UD dog are selected for each team.
If you would like to represent your club, please contact Penny who will assess if you
are ready (or nearly ready) to trial.

K9 Nosework
Congratulations to instructors Gael with Tilly, Anna with Chino & Kim with Sherlock
who gained qualifications in K9 Nosework - Birch ‘Odour Recognition Test’.
Our President, Kim Dowding, is our first accredited K9 Nosework instructor & has just
finished taking an Intermediate Level Class at St Ives. Great fun for the dogs & the
owners are learning heaps!

between legs, spin, touch, bow, etc. What can your dog do?
This is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to help promote the joy of owning a
well trained, well behaved & socialised family dog - in fact a thoroughly good

Mammalian meat allergy or MMA
A recent Catalyst program did a long segment on ticks causing allergies in humans to red meat.
Unheard of until a few years ago, it's on the rise, with two cases now being diagnosed a week
just in the Pittwater area. But what's more astonishing is what causes it. We've now discovered
it's triggered months, even years earlier, by a seemingly unrelated event - a bite from a tick.
Professor Sheryl van Nunen (Immunologist Royal North Shore Hospital) started
seeing people who had a more unusual form of anaphylaxis, in that they'd wake up in the
middle of the night. Normally with anaphylaxis you have the allergen - be that peanut, prawn or
penicillin - and then within half an hour you're usually having quite a serious reaction.
Tick anaphylaxis can be prevented altogether if we just remove ticks the right way. If you
squeeze the tick, that causes the allergen to enter the bloodstream, which causes the
anaphylactic reaction. If you remove the tick correctly without squeezing it then you don't have
these problems.
You should go to the chemist and buy a spray containing ether. Buy something like Wart Off or
Medi Freeze Skin Tag Remover. Place the nozzle conveniently over the tick and spray. Feels
cold - freezes the tick, then wait about ten minutes for the tick to die. Once it's dead, you can
just brush it off. 'Freeze it, don't squeeze it', would be our advice. That will kill the adults.
But what about the tiny ticks? The little larvae or nymphs? Use a cream containing permethrin.
This is basically the same kind of cream as you get for scabies e.g. Lyclear. Just rub that in. The
ticks will all die and soon you'll be able to just rub them off. 'Dab them. Don't grab them’.

The Basket Case
Oh darn, I’m dejected, my gosh but I’m sad,
My obedience dog is driving me MAD!
When we practice at home... why, he works like a dream,
Puts on a performance that rates high esteem.
His recalls are groovy, he “drops” like a flash,
He “fronts” with precision, what more could I ask?
The high jump he clears with incredible flair,
The dumbbell held high as he soars through the air.
The broad jump’s no challenge, he clears it with ease,
As he soars on high just as smug as you please.
On sits and on downs, well ... he’s BETTER than steady,
Doesn’t move one iota, doesn’t sniff or get heady.
But then comes the day that we enter a trial,
He’s NON COMPUS MENTUS, completely SENILE!
He bombed on the heeling, the “recall” no better,
And THEN on the “down” he made love to a Setter.
So then as I stand looking grey as a stone,
I utter out loud, “Well, he works great at home.”
From the judges’ expression, he thinks I’m insane,
For no dog has acted quite so inane.
From this I have come to one brilliant conclusion,
My dog rates first place in the art of illusion.

Introduction to Agility Class

The class will be held on Saturday
mornings from 9am to 10:30am.
A trained instructor will introduce
handlers and their dogs to FUN
(and a bit of hard work) in the
wonderful world of Agility.
There are plenty of spaces at present but there is
likely to be a limit of eight - so get in early!!
Make sure you bring your sense of humour with you!!
NSDTC requires all dogs to be at least
12 months old & in 3rd Class Obedience
before they can start Agility.

My heart is broken.
We had to say goodbye to my boy Monty.
He was diagnosed with haemangiosarcoma in January.
Sash said he had 6 months but he left us in February.
What can I say about Monty - he was my first Golden, my
first show dog, my best buddy & my hero.
Monty introduced me to the breed of Golden Retrievers, the
best breed ever. He was never the most obedient dog,
stubborn sometimes, but he was the most faithful & loving
dog I have ever known.
He was always happy to go anywhere with me, either in the car or the dog trailer, just
open the door & in he would jump. He loved his walks or just mooching around at the
park. He always waited at the front door for me to come home.
At less than 12yrs old it was too soon for him to leave us, but he just couldn’t go on.
You will be missed by all your friends & family, both human & 4 legged.
Monty, I will love you forever & will come to get you at the rainbow bridge.

Magic died on 26 March from kidney failure. He had needed
too many pain killers in the last few years for a bad elbow joint.
He came to me at 2 years of age with the title Grand Champion.
From the outset he was uber calm and when my Shepherd Sassy
died, he naturally assumed the boss role of my pack - no one
argued with Magic, but all he wanted was cuddles and hugs so
I should have called him Mr Smooch.

Makes 48 mini pupcakes
DOUBLE APPLE “PUPCAKES”
Wholesome treats for
the puppy or dog in your family
• 4 cups
• 1 tbsp.
• ¼ tsp
• 1 ½ cups
• 1 ½ cups
• ¼ cup
• 3 tbsp.
•1
• 1 cup
whole wheat flour
baking powder
ground cinnamon
applesauce
water
molasses
olive oil
large egg
chopped dried apples
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Lightly grease mini muffin tins.
2. Stir flour, baking powder & cinnamon together in a large mixing bowl.
3. In a separate bowl, whisk the applesauce, water, molasses, oil & egg together.
Add this to the flour all at once & stir just until blended. Stir in the chopped dried
apples. Spoon this into the prepared muffin tins & bake for about 30 minutes until
the pupcakes spring back when gently pressed.
4. Let the pupcakes cool for 15 minutes in the tin before turning out.
The pupcakes will keep in an airtight container for up to 5 days, or can be frozen for up
to 3 months.
(PS. They sound delicious - good enough even for humans!)

Does your dog have a problem with his ears ?
If your dog has any of the following symptoms it’s worth a visit to your vet.
Swollen earflap. This is generally an aural haematoma (a blood filled swelling of the
ear flap). Your vet will drain the blood & stitch the ear to prevent recurrence.
Scratching at ears or flicking the head. This is a general sign of ear problems. It
may indicate the presence of mites or a foreign body such as a grass seed or be a
sign of otitis.
It can also be caused by a hair in the outer ear canal. This is not serious but causes
the dog to scratch the ear & shake its head which can cause a haematoma.
Thick black wax. This is produced by microscopic mites that feed on the lining
of the ear canal. Your vet will prescribe drops or other appropriate treatment.
Foul odour or discharge. Some wax is normal but if the ear is red & inflamed or
causing annoyance, the dog could have otitis. This is an inflammation of the ear canal
caused by allergies, mites, bacterial or fungal infections. The earlier the dog sees a
vet the better, as infections can cause permanent damage to the ears.
Redness, inflammation. A lot of wax in or a discharge from the ear can cause
pain & irritation. The dog probably has otitis & definitely needs to see the vet.

 All dogs must be FULLY IMMUNISED (Veterinary Certificate required plus 2 weeks
from date of last vaccination). Please read NSDTC Vaccination Policy overleaf.
 Junior Members are 12 to 15 years of age.
 Training equipment (leads, training collars, etc) can be purchased at the Clubhouse.

NSDTC Inc VACCINATION POLICY
Up-dated September 2010
· NSDTC requires a minimum C3 (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus) vaccination
administered after the age of 12 weeks for all puppies less than 12 months old.
Please Note. A delay of two weeks after the final puppy vaccinations is required
before puppies are permitted to join classes.
· All adult dogs (over 12 months old) joining or renewing, must have had at
least a C3 vaccination administered after 12 months of age. Triennial (3-yearly)
C3 vaccination is considered acceptable thereafter.
· Dogs joining or renewing over the age of 4 years that have not had a C3
vaccination in the preceding 3 years must be referred to the Club Vet officer or
official nominee.
· Veterinary certificates showing adequate antibody titres* to distemper,
hepatitis & parvovirus will be accepted by NSDTC for all adult dogs as long as they
are dated within the preceding 12 months.
*Adequate antibody titres for distemper, hepatitis & parvovirus are considered to be > 1: 20
· As Bordetella & Parainfluenza (both agents causing canine cough) are not
generally life threatening to healthy dogs, these vaccinations would be optional, but
recommended & owners are reminded these may be required by boarding kennels.
· All vaccination & antibody titre certificates must be signed by a registered
veterinary surgeon.
· Homeopathic ‘vaccinations’ will not be accepted.
PARKING
· Please park on the LEFT of the road as you enter the showground or near the
picnic area beside the Douglas Pickering Pavilion.

CLUB & USE of GROUND GUIDELINES
These guidelines are for the benefit of all members & the general public
who use St Ives Showground.
· All dogs must be on lead during club training times (except when off
lead work is directed by an instructor during class).
· Dog droppings must be cleaned up & placed in a bin.
· Always wear your name tag.
· The dog rings are a leash free area EXCEPT on Saturdays.
· The main oval may be used for leash free exercise, so long as no other
organised event is taking place.
