20th-Century Painting
On this page, there are examples of two different styles of early-20th-century painting:
Cubism and Pointillism. One painting is a still life—a painting of objects such as vases,
bowls or mugs. The other painting is a landscape—this is a painting of the countryside.
Guitar and Fruit Bowl
Washing in the Sun
This picture has a guitar, a fruit bowl, a bottle and
a book in it. Juan Gris’s style of painting is Cubism.
The picture has a lot of geometrical shapes, and
the colors are not very bright. This is typical of
Cubist paintings. Other famous Cubist artists
are Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.
This painting is from 1905. There is a basket with
some laundry in it. The trees are blue, and there are
long shadows. Pellizza da Volpedo’s style of painting
is called Pointillism. Pointillist paintings have very
small dots of color. Georges Seurat and Paul Signac
are other famous Pointillist artists.
