A Stewardship Reflection on This Sunday’s Readings The story of the Magi — the Three Kings — is one of the most endearing and most familiar to all Catholics. Because they brought gifts, it is also the focus of many stewardship commentaries. In addition, it may be one of the more misunderstood stories around the birth of Jesus. Epiphany is a word with Greek origins that means “manifestation.” We celebrate Epiphany because it represents the realization (related Parish Office Information to the appearance and visit of the Hours: Weekdays 9 AM - 5 PM Magi to the Christ child) that Jesus Phone: (813)907-7746 Fax: (813)907-7556 was indeed the Son of God, for the 9724 Cross Creek Blvd. Tampa, FL 33647. Traditional representations of their visit place them in the stable where Jesus was born. The visitors from the East made valuable gifts to the Holy [email protected] Family — gifts with a value which may have represented a sacrifice on their part. Furthermore, the gifts were given at a time when the Holy Family had a need — they were preparing to flee to Egypt. The generosity of the Magi may have been the instrument which allowed them to do that. We should know that the rent is due on a daily basis and know that the receipt is never stamped "paid in full," because the rent, service in God's kingdom, is again due today and due tomorrow. Some mistakenly think that a commitment to service comes after a great spiritual experience. This is like the man who is cold, standing before the stove, and saying, "Give me heat, and then I will put in some wood." For additional information: http://www.stmarktampa.org/PC An Atmosphere of Reflection and Prayer In the Worship Area In the Worship Area our goal is to have an atmosphere of prayer and reflection. "When in the Worship area before Mass, speak only to God and let God speak to you." 4 This is an invitation for those parishioners who are over 18 years old and have not received the SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION. Our parish will offer you the opportunity to fulfill this need in Spring of 2013. There will be six classes, beginning on January 23rd, from 7:30 to 9:00 pm Please contact our receptionist for further information (813-907-7746) or just come to the church and request the registration packet. Lighthouse News Dear St. Mark family, I thank you for the love and support you have given, not only to our Youth Ministry program, but to me personally this year, and to all of our wonderful teens, young adults and adults on our leadership team. I ask God for a special blessing to be upon you and your family during this holy season. May your days be filled with the tangible grace and love of the season and sustain you throughout all of your life! Respectfully, yours in Christ, , MaryAnn The office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry has started our pilgrimage towards attending the National Catholic Youth Conference; a wonderful, faith filled three day experience to be held in Indianapolis in November of 2013. Just as in the past, we need the help of our parish family to make this happen. Therefore we ask you: 1. Travel with us in prayer as we prepare and plan for our journey. 2. Consider being a sponsor for one of our teens or young adults. Not only will you be walking with your teen on this journey, but you will also share in the abundance of God’s grace that will flow when they arrive home. Each teen that is sponsored will be writing you a personal note about each day of the convention, which will be given to you upon their return. 3. Watch us live from your home . The NFCYM will be live steaming the entire convention during the four day experience!. “Each person will gain something. When people give God their time in gathering, God will grace them with what they need in those moments.” Bishop Timothy Doherty The Sacrament of Confirmation CCC # 1309 Preparation for Confirmation should aim at leading the Christian toward a more intimate union with Christ and a more lively familiarity with the Holy Spirit - his actions, his gifts, and his biddings - in order to be more capable of assuming the apostolic responsibilities of Christian life. To this end catechesis for Confirmation should strive to awaken a sense of belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ, the universal Church as well as the parish community. The latter bears special responsibility for the preparation of confirmands. From the community of the family we are led to the community of the Church. It is in the Church - the community of believers - that faith can grow and develop to maturity. YEAR OF FAITH Faith is a personal decision but "our faith is truly personal, only if OCTOBER 7, 2012 TO NOVEMBER 24, 2013 it is also communal" (Benedict XVI, General Audience, October 31, 2012). "I would like - one again - to invite everyI find that I cannot persevere and grow in my faith without the one, in this Year of Faith, to open the support and encouragement of others. I cannot do it alone and Bible more often, to hold, read, and medthat is why the community of the Church is so important for me. In the Church I find itate on it and to pay greater attention to others who are struggling in their journey of faith just as I am at times. It is this commuthe Reading of the Sunday Mass; all this is nity that challenges me and picks me up when I fall. In the Church I find others who are precious nourishment for our faith." truly living their faith and this inspires and encourages me. It is this community that has (Benedict XVI, General Audience, Decembeen there for us in the difficult times and provided support when we needed it. ber 12, 2012) "Our personal faith brings us into relationship with God's people, and the faith of the entire people strengthens us in our relationship with God." (US Catholic Cat p. 37-38) Within the community of the Church we support, nourish, and encourage one another as we journey together in faith. We find that we really need one another. "Each believer is thus a link in the great chain of believers. I cannot believe without being carried by the faith of others, and by my faith I help support others in the faith." (CCC #166) I Am There With You Faith is a gift from God that we have received from others who have gone before us and we must pass it on to those who come after us. The gift of faith comes from God through the Church - a community of faith in which the faith becomes real and alive touching, changing, and transforming our lives. "Faith commits everyone of us to become a living sign of the presence of the Risen Lord in the world." (Benedict XVI, Porta Fidei, #15) As we continue in this Year of Faith Pope Benedict challenges us to ask: "…is faith truly the transforming force in our life, in my life? Or is it merely one of the elements that are part of existence, without being the crucial one that involves us totally?" (Benedict, General Audience, October 17, 2012) This is a time to commit ourYou are invited to commit to 30 or 60 selves more deeply to one another in the community of the Church so that, minutes per week in the present of transformed by the Risen Lord, we may transform the world in which we live. Start this year off with some goals to work towards. Here's a suggestion that will certainly improve your life! God loves you and wants to have a relationship with you. Write down on a piece of paper when you think would be the best time of your day to spend a little time with Him. Read some Bible stories during this time, or just think about what is going on in your life. Share your feeling with God. Be sure to keep your paper close by so you can use it as a reminder of this new goal and check it to see how well you are doing. If you need to, change the time! It doesn't matter when you spend time with God, just that you do! New habits take a lot of effort; so keep working at it! Keep telling yourself that you are going to do it! He asked, “Son, is there anything you’d like to do right now?” Jimmy said, “I want some McDonald French Fries.” His father said, “If that’s what my boy wants, then that’s what my boy gets.” They got into the family car and headed towards McDonald’s. When they arrived Jimmy's Dad made the order, and just to see the joy on Jimmy's face, he ordered Jimmy a super sized order of fries When Jimmy's Dad gave him the bag with the fries, his Dad was overjoyed to see his little boy so happy over something so simple. His Dad wanted to join Jimmy in the fun so he asked Jimmy to share a few of the fries with him. To his surprise, his son quickly put his arms around his fries and said, “No, these are mine.” His Dad was in a state of shock for a moment. He could not believe what had happened. Hurt and saddened, his Dad thought to himself "my son failed to realize that I am the source of all those French fries". His Dad was the one who drove them both to McDonald’s. His Dad is the one that gave the cashier the money from my wallet. His Dad did not give Jimmy the size fry he was expecting, but something twice as big. Yet here was Jimmy talking about "his" French fries. Not only was his Dad the source of the French fries, he also had power to take all the fries back from Jimmy. Or, if his Dad wanted to, he could buy Jimmy so many fries that he could never eat them all. Jimmy's Dad did not "need" any of Jimmy's French fries. He could go back to the counter and get as many fries as he wanted. What Jimmy's Dad wanted was for his son to invite him into the wonderful little world his Dad had made possible for his son. He wanted his son to be willing to share the very blessing that he had provided. As the Dad thought about it, one or two fries really would not have made much of a difference for Jimmy that day. Everyday God gives us the choice to share with Him the blessings that He has given us. Everyday he is waiting for us to invite Him to be a part of our lives - to share with Him the blessings that He has made possible for us.
