Region 5 Lead Agency Training Event Catalogue April-June 2015 Professional Development Career Center 351 Wagoner Dr. Fayetteville, NC 28303 910-860-2277, ext. 2537 Website: www.ccpfc.org 4/9/2015 6:15 PM - 9:00 PM CPR (ONLY) CPR teaches basic life support skills for adults, children and infants which includes: how to provide cardiac compressions, breathing for anyone that is in cardiac arrest and how to recognize the early onset of a heart attack. Learners will also demonstrate how to correctly apply abdominal thrust technics used on choking victims and how to properly operate an Automated External Defibrillator. After completing this course, learners will be able to identify an emergency and apply knowledge gained through hands-on illustration of CPR techniques. A post test will be given to assess gained knowledge and skills. Cost $20 4/9/2015 6:15 PM - 8:30 PM From Crying to Crisis: Period of Purple Crying to Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS): Babies by nature have a period of time which they will cry and seemingly for no reason at all. This, of course, may lead to frustration for parents and caregivers and can by a catalyst to abuse with long term effects or death (crying to crisis). Research and Best Practice give new insight to this and ways to cope. This event is meant to encourage, inform and empower by providing support and services for the professional through education that focuses on scientifically sound literature and the best practice evidence available. A few simple strategies can help caregivers cope with a crying baby and prevent the irreversible harm of SBS. At the conclusion of this learning event, learners will be able to develop strategies and coping mechanisms for parents and professionals. (2 DCDEE contact hours credits - CHCs) Cost $15 4/11/2015 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale-Revised (ECERS-R) A thorough revision of the ECERS, designed as an observational assessment tool used to evaluate and assess quality programs for preschool-kindergarten aged children, from 2 through 5 years of age. It is intended for programs who may be subject to quality ratings by program monitors, regulatory agencies, researchers, or other formal observers, as well as anyone considering using this scale to evaluate their program. Learners will discuss how to administer the ECERS-R in an early childhood classroom discussing indicators in detail. At the conclusion, learners will be able to re-evaluate and make adjustments to their program based on the scale to improve early learning environments. Learners will discuss ways to reduce the risk of SIDS through safe sleep practices for infants. Learners will also review Safe Sleep Policy guidelines, NC Division of Child Development and Early Education licensing rule, maintenance of the proper forms, and other “Best Practice” recommendations. During this learning event, learners will receive the needed information to create a Safe Sleep Policy, updated research about SIDS and local health and safety resources. At the conclusion, learners will be able to define SIDS, identify external stressors and risk factors associate with SIDS and list components of NC Child Care Rules for a Safe Sleep Policy. Learners will be given a Pre/Posttest to assess knowledge gained as a result of this event. (2 DCDEE contact hours credits - CHCs) Cost $20 4/11/2015 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM Special Needs from all Angles: Strategies for Assisting Children with ADHD and Strategies for the Slow Reluctant Learner What is ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyper Disorder)? What do you mean by “slow reluctant learner”? These are two different children that require different approaches to their learning. This learning event will focus on providing learners with an understanding of ADHD while also understanding and assisting the slow reluctant learner with the means of bringing successful learning experiences into the learning environment. At the conclusion learners will be able to recognize and develop strategies that will assist children regardless by planning activities to meet their needs. . (4 DCDEE contact hours credits - CHCs) Cost $20 4/11/2015 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM SUPERvision Series (Revised) SUPERvision Series (Revised) A pro-active curriculum developed by the North Carolina Division of Child Development and Early Education (DCDEE) to reduce child abuse and neglect in child care facilities. It was recognized that many abuse/neglect investigations could be prevented if caregivers followed careful and appropriate practices and procedures in supervising children. The goal is aimed at identifying best practices in child care and helping child care providers to adopt these in order to avoid incidents and reports of child abuse and neglect. Most importantly, following these guidelines will protect children from harm. This series covers: Get Ready, Get Set, Go, Beyond Bandaids, Infant Toddler Zone and Providers Almanac. At the conclusion of this event, learners will be able to emphasize the importance of visual supervision, follow appropriate procedures for handling and administering medication, provide secure physical environments, and promote positive relationships and guide children to self-control. Instructor will assess knowledge gained through pre and post assessment and feedback provided during presentation. (6 DCDEE contact hours credits - CHCs) Cost $25 4/14/2015 6:15 PM - 9:00 PM First Aid (ONLY) This learning event teaches how to demonstrate control while providing care during any emergency in a child care setting. This includes control bleeding, wrap bleeding injuries, burns, insect bites, treatment for shock, sudden illnesses, diabetic situations and other injuries and illnesses that may arise. After completing this course, participants will be able to identify an emergency and apply knowledge gained through hands-on illustration. A post test will be given to assess gained knowledge and skills. Making Accommodations for Children and Families with Special Needs This learning event focuses on special needs inclusion in Early Childhood classrooms; what 'quality classrooms' are made of; laws and regulations; how to make creative adaption to the classroom for inclusive needs; and implementing true inclusion in the classroom setting. At the completion, learners will be able to implement true inclusion in their own classrooms, recognize when a program does not support inclusion and make changes accordingly. The environment a teacher creates, paired with her knowledge of the children in her care, can prevent many challenging behaviors in young children. Teachers who create positive social environments find that children more easily develop the social-emotional skills they need to succeed. This session focuses on modifications teachers can make in six key areas of the environment that will prevent and reduce conflict that leads to challenging behaviors. What are we doing to educate ourselves and the community on the signs and symptoms that are directly in front of us? How do we assist? At the conclusion of this learning event, the learner will be able to define and distinguish abuse and neglect as stated in the federal law, describe the types of abuse and how they can affect a child, discuss how to report a child abuse and neglect issues and how to assist when the signs are recognized. (2 DCDEE contact hours credits - CHCs) Cost $15 4/18/2015 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM 9th Annual Regional Prevent Child Abuse & Neglect Conference (Westover High School Auditorium) To increase awareness and invest in the education of Early Care and Education Professionals, Parents, and the General Public in Cumberland and surrounding counties in an effort to prevent abuse, neglect and child maltreatment before it occurs. Partnership for Children works with other community resources to help build safe, stable, nurturing, and healthy relationships for all children. After attending this conference learners will be able to define child abuse through careful observation and discuss prevention with children, parents, co-workers and identify agencies for reporting. (3 DCDEE Contact hour credits-CHCs) Cost $10 4/25/2015 9:00 AM - 2:30 PM NC TQRIS Family Engagement This learning event will provide information to assist early childhood providers with Family Engagement resources that will focus on effective strategies for working with families. During this event the following family engagement areas will be discussed: igniting parents interest in their child's development and education; active parenting in childcare; key ingredients for effective communication; and promoting successful transitions out of childcare. New family engagement program standards will soon be introduced into the star-rated license system, with which all licensed providers of childcare services in NC will have to comply. After completing this learning event, learners will be able to better engage families in child development through effective communication while promoting the transition from childcare. How do you or did you handle it? What did you say? Do you wish you had done things differently? Was it handled in an ethical manner? This learning event is designed to help learners understand how to deal with frustration and anger in the workplace and in their personal lives. Learners will engage in activities evaluating their approach and discuss more ethical approaches as it pertains to the workplace. Emphasis will be placed on how to deal with conflict. At the conclusion, learners will discuss and demonstrate appropriate communication when speaking and interacting with people, difficult or not, and the best way to convey the message. Measles spreads very easily, so it is important to protect against infection. The Administration for Children and Families’ Office of Head Start and Office of Child Care consider it critical that children in early childhood programs are vaccinated according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention immunization recommendations. During this event, learners will discuss the state requirements for documenting immunization of children in the program and ways to encourage parents to contact their doctor about any symptoms the child may have that are consistent with measles. At the conclusion learners will be able to identify some common signs and symptoms, discuss steps to minimize the risk of measles spreading to other children. and the necessary steps for reporting. When a child uses challenging behaviors at school, parents and teachers need to work together to address the issue. However, when discussing behavior problems parents often feel blamed by the teachers and teachers often feel unsupported by the parents. This session focuses on developing strategies and skills to make these conversations more productive for everyone…especially the child! Learners will discuss how to set the stage for and successfully conduct these difficult conversations with parents. Belonging to a team is a result of feeling part of something larger than you. It has a lot to do with understanding the mission and objectives of the organization. Although you have a specific job function, you are unified with other members to accomplish the overall objective. At the conclusion of this learning event, learners will define the differences between a work group and a team, how to use a seven step model to manage conflict, solve problems, describe the process of constructive feedback, and develop strategies for appropriate incentives. (6 DCDEE contact hours credits - CHCs) Cost $25 5/2/2015 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM Medication Administration A 5 hour introductory level learning event for school age care professionals. This event includes the following modules: 1) Health, Safety, & Nutrition, 2) Environmental Design, 3) Child/Youth Development, 4) Developmentally Appropriate Activities, 5) Guiding Child Behavior, and 6) Quality School Age Care. It is required by the NC Division of Child Development for school age care professionals working in licensed programs but is a great training for new staff in any afterschool program setting. At the completion of this learning event, learners will be able to create and promote learning environments that meet all children’s developmental needs, foster positive behavior and identify quality elements of school age care. Knowledge gained will be assess through group activities, feedback and pre and post survey. We want to be sure children are safe while they play, learn and explore the outside experience children again daily in early childhood settings. Upon completion, learners will be able to make informed recommendations to the parent concerning the child’s signs and symptoms. This event is designed to help learners create innovative, fun and different activities during circle time through role play. Upon completion, learners will be able to define and discuss the purpose of circle time; create and illustrate activities that will be utilized during circle time. (2 DCDEE contact hours credits - CHCs) Cost $15 5/19/2015 6:15 PM - 8:30 PM Developmentally Appropriate Behavior: But I’m supposed to act like this! Children use many different kinds of behavior as they grow and test their skills. Some of these behaviors, although appropriate for their developmental age, are still very challenging for teachers. This learning event focuses on understanding when children can be expected to acquire certain social-emotional skills and guides learners toward understanding, respecting and responding to developmentally appropriate behaviors. At the conclusion, learners will be able to distinguish what is appropriate for the child or children in his/her care. Policies will be explained that were developed by the Division of Child Development to ensure compliance with regulations. At the conclusion of this event, learners will be able to differentiate Sliding Fee Scales and Scholarships, identify their LPA (Local Purchasing Agency), and list the provider responsibilities as it relates to necessary documentation. This learning event will provide hands on learning and knowledge of how to recognize creative abilities in children. The hands on activities will become a model for incorporating creativity in the learning environment. This learning event is to share the common characteristics of creative people and provide insight into personal traits and attributes that frequently occurs with creative people. At the conclusion, learners will be able to recognize children who have creative abilities and design lesson plans to incorporate creativity to meet the developmental levels of all children. This learning event is meant to inform learners of the potential of job-related exposure to blood borne pathogen diseases. During this event, you will learn how to minimize the risk of exposure or infection to Ebola, Human Immunodeficiency Syndrome (HIV), Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV) and other blood borne pathogens. At the completion of this event, learners will be able to define universal precautions and identify the steps that should be taken after an exposure incident in order to prevent infection. Literacy starts in play and fantasy, in scribbling and drawing, in pretend reading and writing. It is defined as the ability to read and write and is essential to fully developing a sense of well-being and citizenship. Children who are solid readers perform better in school, have a healthy self-image, and become lifelong learners, adding to their viability to society. At the conclusion of this event, learners will develop an understanding of the stages of literacy and the strategies needed to effectively apply them in their classroom. Learners will gain knowledge on current trends and practices used in early childhood education. This learning event is to provide an understanding of how to meet the academic needs of those children. This event is meant to provide an understanding of how to identify at risk children and further discuss how to assist the children in their learning despite their difficulties in surviving. At the conclusion, learners will develop strategies to assist in the success of an “at risk” child. Have you experienced a baby who will not stop crying regardless of what you do. Is it frustrating? Would you like to change the situation? How about that toddler that’s all over the place the little “pint-sized” caveman. There are five steps to follow which Dr. Karp refers to as the 5 S’s. This will help you help babies calm themselves, thus calming you. Using a stage by stage approach, teachers and parents will learn how “Toddler-ese can help transform children into a happy cooperative and secure child. At the conclusion of this event, learners will be able to develop strategies to help during the most challenging times: bedtime struggles, separation anxiety, toilet training and aggression. (6 DCDEE contact hours credits - CHCs) Cost $25 5/30/2015 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM Safe Sitters: Pre-teens and Teens (ages 12-17 ONLY) During this learning event students are taught the correct way to administer CPR/First Aid to adults, children, and infants by using mannequins. First aids skills will enhance their knowledge in handling emergencies involving the children in their care. During the last phase of the event emphasis is put on the do’s and don’ts of babysitting. After completion of this learning event, learners will be able to recognize an emergency and determine the what to do, when to do and how to do. Learners will also develop a plan for starting a babysitting business. Instructor will assess knowledge gained through verbal pre-test, written post-test, and hands on practical skills test on CPR mannequins and AED. Learners will receive a CPR card and First Aid certificate after completing this six-hour training. (3 DCDEE contact hours credits - CHCs) Cost $20 5/30/2015 9:30 AM - 1:30 PM Cultural Competence: Awareness Children from diverse backgrounds-including children of color, children of lower socioeconomics, and children of marginalized groups - continue to be cared for and educated in early learning environments that are not providing the diversity of experiences that reflect their cultural backgrounds, which includes family values and learning styles. Failing to acknowledge and incorporate the role of culture in learning can result in compromised benefits from participation in early childhood programs with significant implications from later learning. This course is a beginning step to preparing the early childhood workforce to increase their awareness and understanding of culture and cultural competence. Upon completion of this learning event, learners will be able to define culture, explain cultural conditioning and discuss culturally responsive teaching and the role of engaging families. This event focus on responsive care while incorporating objectives that enable teachers to focus on what matters most for very young children. This new edition provides ideas to teachers to plan and implement every aspect of caring for and teaching children from birth to age 3. At the conclusion, learners will be able to discuss the research behind the curriculum and discusses the five central components of nurturing care and teaching, discuss the five routines and eight experiences that are essential to the development and learning of children birth to age 3 and explains the skills, knowledge, and behaviors that matter most to the continuing development and learning of very young children. Why do some children come to depend on challenging behaviors while others discover better, more effective ways to get what they want? Generally, children use negative behavior when they lack the skills that would help them meet their needs. Teachers who take time to assess the reason for misbehavior are better able to teach children new socialemotional skills. This session focuses on the common reasons that children misbehave, a crucial first step in determining how to prevent/reduce challenging behaviors. The new rules require the development of an Emergency Preparedness And Response (EPR) Plan by all licensed facilities using the designated EPR Plan template, orientation of all staff members in the specifics of the individual facility plan, reunification plans for families and children following necessary evacuations and an annual review of the facility’s EPR Plan. Upon completion, learners will be able to develop EPR plan and to reunify plans for necessary evacuations. Learners will also demonstrate how to correctly apply abdominal thrust technics used on choking victims and how to properly operate an Automated External Defibrillator. In First-Aid, learners will demonstrate how to control bleeding, wrap bleeding injuries, treat for shock, sudden illnesses, and injuries. After completing this course, participants will be able to identify an emergency and apply knowledge gained through hands-on illustration of CPR techniques. This learning event focus on how to incorporate science into the daily routine that allows children to experience life in gulps and sips as well as measured doses. Outdoor times allow children to experience different activities in a unique learning environment and provide a greater sense of freedom. This interactive event will include ideas for activities as it pertains to science using natural materials and will share research about the importance of contact with nature on a child’s development, attitudes and approaches to learning. At the conclusion of this event, learners will be able to develop strategies and activities using outdoor resources that will enhance a child’s creativity, cognitive and emotional development. This event includes the following modules: 1) Health, Safety, & Nutrition, 2) Environmental Design, 3) Child/Youth Development, 4) Developmentally Appropriate Activities, 5) Guiding Child Behavior, and 6) Quality School Age Care. It is required by the NC Division of Child Development for school age care professionals working in licensed programs but is a great training for new staff in any afterschool program setting. All events will close 5 days prior to the date of the learning event or when the learning event reaches the maximum capacity. Preregistration is required for all trainings. Payment must be received in order to reserve space. If registering by mail, form and payment must be received in office 5 days prior the learning event taking place.
