Hidden History in Our Backyard
Arvest. 4225 SE Adams Road
Mondays, 10 – Noon
May 11th, May 18, June 1st
Instructors: Michelle M. Martin & Kay Little
Just north of us in Kansas lies the real Little House on the Prairie where Laura Ingalls
Wilder lived as a child. Kay Little and Michelle M. Martin take you on a historical adventure right in our backyard. Along with Laura, you’ll meet Ma & Pa Ingalls, the
Osage, and Doc Tann. Learn about their lives and the various connections between
Kansas, Civil War soldiers, American Indians, and early African-Americans. We’ll top
off the course with a field trip to the Little House on the Prairie Museum for a private,
behind-the-scenes look at the Ingalls home site. The tour will take place on June 1st
from 10 am –Noon. (Please note the museum is a 45 minute drive from Bartlesville,
carpooling options will be available to students.)
Michelle M. Martin is a history professor, living history interpreter, author and photographer, Martin
founded her own historical consulting company--Discovering History--and serves as a historical consultant for the television, film and print industries. Her work has been aired on the History Channel,
PBS and the National Geographic Channel. She is a living history interpreter and has volunteered her
time at Fort Scott National Historic Site, Fort Larned National Historic Site, Wilson's Creek National
Battlefield, Mine Creek Battlefield State Historic Site. Her photographs have been featured in magazines and newspapers in the Central Plains. Martin served as the historian and director of the Little
House on the Prairie Museum, the original Kansas home site of the Charles Ingalls family from 18691871. Martin's passion is preserving the rich tapestry of the American historical narrative and sharing
it with the public. Kay Little has been an educator for more than 35 years, teaching 4th grade, preschool, homeschooling 2 sons, and serving as education coordinator at Bartlesville Area History Museum. While teaching her sons, Kay became very interested in history and started teaching local,
state and U.S. history to groups of homeschoolers. Kay is from McAlester and graduated from East
Central University. After "retiring", she started her own business, Little History Adventures, to share
with people of all ages about local, state and U.S. history. Kay has served on boards for the local
homeschool group, Wesleyan Christian School and Bartlesville Allied Arts and Humanities Council.
Footprints in the Dew: The Mullendore Mystery
Arvest, 4225 SE Adams Road & Bartlesville Public Library (May 20)
Mondays, 1 – 3 pm (May 11, 18), Wednesday (May 20)
May 11th, May 18, May 20
Instructor: Dale Lewis
The most famous unsolved case in Osage County is the murder of E.C.
Mullendore III, heir to the 300,000-acre Cross Bell Ranch. Mullendore
was murdered in his home Sept. 26, 1970. The only other person with
him was ranch employee Damon ‘Chub’ Anderson, who was also shot,
though there was speculation that Chub was the murderer. Author Dale
Lewis and Anderson were friends until Anderson’s death in 2010. Using
photos and taped interviews, Dale will share his insight, stories and
theories as you learn about the history of the ranch, the mistakes made
during the investigation, and various theories about the crime. Dale Lewis, also known
as “The Original Buffalo Dale,” is the author of Footprints in the Dew: The Life and
Times of Chub Anderson, due to be published in fall 2015.

An Integrative Medicine Primer
Price Tower, 510 Dewey Ave
Tuesdays, 1 – 3 pm
May 12, 19 & June 2nd
Instructors: Judi Hill and Melvin Hildebrand
Combining alternative medicine with mainstream medicine is commonly called integrative
medicine. Alternative medicine embraces practices of diet, exercise, supplements and
holistic practices that are not typically part of the usual advice you might receive from an
MD. The ultimate goal of using both
approaches is to enable you to make
decisions and take actions that will give
you the greatest potential for a healthy
lifestyle. Judi Hill and Melvin Hildebrand
will help you define how integrative
medicine can help you become healthier as
they share their personal experiences.
