WELCOME TO
THE
KOREAN FILM
FESTIVAL
2011
I was first exposed to the uniqueness of the Korean
cinema when I watched the film “Il Mare” directed
by Hyun-seung Lee in 2000. Time travel, fragile family
relationships and a plot line that deviates from the
common narratives of the western cinema were only
some of the features manifested in that beautiful
creation.
After watching the historical martial arts drama
of epic proportions “fighter in the wind” directed by
Yun-ho Yang in 2004 – I finally realized what makes
contemporary Korean cinema so special: the Korean
cinema produces films with such fierce intensity and
strong emotions that are almost unknown to the
western viewer .films that combine art house with
Hollywood style commercial cinema, films that deal
with a wide range of subjects in the same technical
and aesthetic perfection.
In This year’s festival, five films representing the best of
Korean cinema will be screened. The opening Film
“secret union” deals with the relationship between
south and north Korea. ”Rough cut” deals with the
Korean gangster, “woochi” is a comic martial arts
fantasy, “Breathless” explores the lives of those less
fortunate and “the King and Clown” is a historical epic
drama.
Until the year 2009, only a handfull of Korean movies
were screened in Israel outside of film festivals. lately
the films “my brand new life” and “the housemaid”
were screened on a commercial basis and with
great success. Hopefully this success will lead Israeli
distributers to bring more and more Korean films to be
screened in Israel.

in Israel.

Koreans and Israelis are alike in their love for films.
Attracting top tier talents, movie-making has recently
become one of the most vibrant industries in Korea
producing top quality movies. Indeed Korean films
are spearheading the world-wide phenomenon
dubbed as "Korean wave" or "K-pop"; unprecedented
popularity of Korean music, dance, dramas and other
forms of popular arts throughout the world.
Since 2007 the Korean Embassy in Israel has organized
the Korean Film Festival to present Israeli public with
movies representing today's Korean film industry that
thrives unprecedentedly by attracting creative minds
and talents. Greatly appreciating good reviews and
recognition Israeli audience is according to Korean
movies, I sincerely hope that the selection of films to
be presented at this year's Festival will be up to the
likings of art loving Israeli movie-goers and become
an important channel of cultural exchanges that
will surely help further upgrade understanding and
friendship between our two countries.

Synopsis
After witnessing the deaths of his mother and
sister during childhood, Sang-hoon (Yang Ik-june)
grows up along with violence. He works as a thug
for a company and his job is to beat up and
threaten weaker folks. In order to punish his father
for destroying the family, Sang-hoon visits his father
regularly with rampage.
One day he meets a teenage girl named Yon-hi
(Kim Kkob-bi). As the encounter piles up, Sanghoon and Yon-hi find themselves into each other.
But their link had started a long time ago…

Yang Ik-june became a star director in the
independent filmmaking circle in one fell swoop
with his feature film debut, "Breathless" (2008),
which swept across numerous international film
festivals. "Breathless", in which Yang played the
lead role, won the Tiger Award at the International
Film Festival Rotterdam and the Best Film award
and Critics’ Prize at the Deauville Asian Film Festival.
When it was released in Korea, the movie took in
100,000 box office tickets, a rare accomplishment
for an independent film.

paparazzi wanting a piece of him, wherever he
goes. This behavior puts him in a series of spiraling

shooting a new movie "Rough Cut" playing a
gangster. Because of his bad temper, he beats up
a fellow actor and forces the film production to a
halt.

JANG Hun (장훈)
JANG started his movie career as a member of
production crew of "Samaritan Girl" and became
the assistant director of "A Bow" and "Time". "Rough
Cut" is his first feature. It is so much visible, that his
debut film, "Rough Cut"(2008), was actually written
and produced by KIM Ki-duk altogether. KIM’s
presence is felt in parts of the movie, but it has much
more commercial orientation than KIM’s own movie.

Synopsis
500 Years Ago in the Joseon Dynasty, the Pipe
of the prophecy has fallen into the evil hands of
the goblins, propelling the world into a whirlwind
of disorder. The ancient Taoist wizards turn to the
greatest ascetics of their time, the Master and
Hwadam (KIM Yoon-suk), for help in vanquishing
the goblins and trust each wizard with one half of
the Pipe.
Meanwhile, the Master’s rascal student Woochi
(GANG Dong-won) tricks the king with the art of
transformation and creates a fiasco, which makes

Choi Dong-hoon is a natural born storyteller,
whose debut film, "The Big Swindle"(2004) redrew
the map of Korean-style crime thriller flicks and
brought the director an instant fame. Choi’s
talent, as an exceptional storyteller, went beyond
making a movie of his own story; it is absolutely
shined in "Tazza: The High Rollers"(2006), a big
screen adaptation of the well-known cartoon
of the same name by HUH Young-man, and
<Woochi>(2010), which is based on an old fable.

TO THE NEW
KOREAN CINEMA
Till the 1990's South Korean Cinema didn't get real
international recognition and rarely managed
to make its local audience fill the theaters.
Even if along the years there were different
experimentations with genres such as espionage,
mafia or western (easterns), it was the melodrama
the prevailing genre in South Korean cinema.
Furthermore, the content of the films had to go
through strict censure under the authoritarian
regimes. During the 1990's some changes brought
the flourishing of South Korean Cinema in two
phases.
First, with the coming of democracy and the
weakening of the censure, some old and new
filmmakers tried to tackle political and social
issues in a critical way in their films. This tendency
actually started during the 1980's, but the process
of democratization of South Korea brought a new
generation of directors who made an ambivalent,
artistic, complex and challenging cinema that
started to draw the attention of international film
festivals.
To this generation belong such acclaimed directors
as Kim Ki-Duk ("Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter…
and Spring"), Lee Chang-Dong ("Oasis") and
Hong Sang-Soo ("Woman is the Future of Man").
Meanwhile, South Korea had entered a rapid
process of globalization and opened itself to the
international market and the Korean government
encouraged the big Korean corporations
(Chaebol) to invest in the film industry.
As a result companies like Samsung and Daewoo
invested in film productions and helped to create
more commercial films of bigger budget and
in such genres as romantic comedies, action
and mafia films. Korean Cinema became richer.
After a very short time, the economic crisis of
1997 forced the corporations to shut down their
film departments, but the infrastructure was
there and young producers made use of the
new professional and commercial formats. They

manage to get venture capital investors and in
1999 a new wave of Korean cinema begun.
This new Korean Cinema was characterized by
films that try to find the right balance between
art and entertainment. The most important films
coming from South Korea in the last 12 years are
well done genre films that are at the same time
daring and artistic. Film directors such as Bong
Joon-Ho ("Mother", "The Host", "Memories of
Murder"), Park Chan-Wook ("Oldboy", "Sympathy
for Mr. Vengeance", "I'm a Cyborg but that's OK")
and Kim Ji-Woon ("A Tale of Two Sisters", "The Good,
The Bad and The Weird") make commercial,
entertainment films, that are at the same time
showcased in prestigious film festivals.
The most fascinating South Korean cinema is
that many films become moral tales that propose
a constant reversal of values like good and evil.
In Korean Cinema there are not totally good or
totally evil characters. People make choices and
do deeds that are perceived as good or evil only
in the context of the human relationships they
develop.
Prominent Korean filmmakers dare to deal with
human behavior also in its most cruel and
sadistic aspects. It is as if they were telling us
that only if we understand and acknowledge
the infinite cruelty of the human race, we will
be able to feel real compassion and tolerance
towards the other, and towards ourselves.
But South Korean cinema is rich and varied
Korean audiences love romantic comedies and
sentimental films even more than violent movies
(which are paradoxically more popular in the
west). This is why it is impossible to summarize an
industry that produces around 120 films a year in
only a few sentences.
There are Korean films for every taste. The sure
thing is that in the last ten years South Korea
produced a large number of cinematic world
class masterpieces that didn't only challenged,
changed, broadened and redefined they way
films are done, but also and more importantly, the
way in which we understand what it means to be
human.
