Beyond the Great Sea
This display artistically contrasts the tragic fate of the mother’s family to the fortune
of the father’s. The father’s family was able to escape the holocaust thanks to Jewish
philanthropists who funded their getaway to the “Land of Promise” (Argentina),
whereas the others perished.
The doors of the train in, “Beyond the Great Sea” remain open to symbolize family
members fleeing from despair to freedom. The wires represent both the fences
around the agricultural fields on one side, and the barbed wire of the concentration
camps on the other.

The Harp
Shiraz’s research into her family’s roots begins with her work’s title, “The Harp” or
“nevel” in Hebrew, which has biblical origins with interpretations that
include: song, psalm, liturgical poem, as well as secrets and mystery. The installation,
“A Harp from the Biblical Period”, traces the source of its name and contains verses
from the Bible pertaining to poetry and psalms. The harp reflects the aspect of the
song, psalm and the liturgical poem, whereas the written work reflects the mystery
of the unknown. The wooden material (symbolizing a tree and roots) highlights
antiquity. “O God, I will sing a new song unto Thee, upon a harp of ten strings will
I sing praises unto Thee.” (Psalms, 144:9).

Thinking of Peace
This clever display is modeled after a tangram, or a Chinese multi-sectioned puzzle,
that symbolizes in each of its pieces a conflict or tension that exists within the
extended family.
The display, “Thinking of Peace,” captures the resilience of this family’s story despite
a number of complicated conflicts. For example, religious conflict developed when
an aunt became religious while married to an atheist. Grandparents who survived
the holocaust experienced racial discrimination in Israel due to their ‘Yekke’ origin.
A mother experienced the Arab-Israeli conflict while living on kibbutz Haon under
Syrian fire. Tensions also occurred around the mother’s life on kibbutz rather than
living in contemporary metropolitan Tel Aviv.
“The base of the tangram is shaped like a house, symbolizing the hope for peace;
that despite the conflicts, we can live in peace and tolerance with each other and
with the whole world. I thought that a house best symbolizes both family and
national peace”.

Visions of My Heritage
This nostalgic display is set inside a suitcase and concentrates on thirteen houses,
the thirteen chapters in Tomer’s life, celebrating his 13 years of age: his Bar Mitzvah
year.
In the center of the installation is his great-grandfather’s suitcase from Yemen; on
the suitcase lie pairs of shoes from three generations: Tomer, his mother and his
grandfather.
The house encompasses the circles of life that surround him - the earthly circle, the
family circle, and one for the self.
“The work means a lot to me and reflects my strong bond to my parents, my
grandparents and to their roots and personal stories.”

My Family History in a Closet
The exhibit, as its name suggests, is a closet that shelters the stories of Zohar’s life.
The exterior side of the closet is decorated with elements of an olive tree and a
dove.
The olive tree symbolizes the value of deep roots and strength, and the dove
heralds peace.
Inside the closet hang five pages that tell the stories of people in her family, as
well as her own story. “The closet holds my entire life story.”

‫‪A Box of Family Memories‬‬
‫‪The twins Inbal and Linoy Yosef, rummaged through their family albums in search‬‬
‫‪of their roots. They uncovered old vintage photos of unfamiliar people, names and‬‬
‫‪stories.‬‬
‫‪The exhibit, “A Box of Family Memories” contains a mix of old and new photos, with‬‬
‫‪accompanying family stories and memories.‬‬
‫‪“This work represents our Jewish-Israeli identity, a link that will be passed to future‬‬
‫”‪generations in the long chain of the Jewish people.‬‬

My Grandfather’s Space
This creative display captures a still-life shot of Roi’s great grandfather’s life via his
workspace: his desk, his picture as a goldsmith and as a teacher who made Aliyah
to Ashkelon from Yemen.
The items on the desk highlight the values and priorities of his grandfather: family
photos, religious holy books, the Bible and Psalms.
In the background, there is an original painting by Roi of his great grandfather, and
a poem by Nathan Alterman about the Aliyah of Yemenite Jewry.

connect me to my family heritage.”

My Heritage House
Matanel’s model of a house, symbolizes his roots. Cleverly constructed from
cardboard with brick-like wallpaper, his house contains five floors that represent
five generations of his family. The top floor characterizes the oldest generation with
its windows closest to the sky.
Small colorful lights sparkle from the display so that each color describes the
personality appearing in each window... As time passes, some of the windows
remain empty while others are filled with new people.
“While creating this model, I discovered many new things about my family, making
it a meaningful learning experience.”

My Roots Tree
The display is constructed of different wooden parts that represent Daniella’s family
tree. The tree depicts her immediate family, as well as earlier generations.
It also includes parts of the Israeli flag, representing the return to the land of Israel
after two thousand years.
The work integrates lights to symbolize the order of the generations. “For me,
the light symbolizes my grandparents’ long trek back from the Diaspora, and an
appreciation that my life is an outcome of their journey. When all the lights are
shining bright, I feel and understand my existence”.

The Small Details
Lotem’s display features many miniature scrolls that suspend from tree branches.
The branches and roots bond the family while the scrolls contain life stories of
each family member.
Lotem chose to design a tree because like the branches of a tree, everyone is connected;
while the leaves symbolize a tree that continues to bloom and thrive forever.
The display’s title, “The Small Details” captures the importance of the tiny details in
the eternal narrative of each member’s life story that captures their future legacy.
“It is clear that a person’s life is much more than just small details on paper, but it
is these recorded details on paper that remain forever.”

“My Family Tree”
My Great Grandfather - Moshe Avidor
Noam’s display is a tribute to his great
grandfather, Moshe Avidor, who was
a renaissance man. This is a creative
collage of key milestones in his life from his Aliyah to being appointed
CEO of the Ministry of Education and
CEO of the Jewish Agency. The shirt is
reminiscent of the American flag, the
country where he studied and received
his PhD in education.
“Through this project about my
grandfather I learned a lot about my
family but also about the history of
Israel and the people who founded it.”
Noa’s display is created in the form
of a sculpted tree representing the
foundation of her family, that focuses
on the chain of generations.
The installation is dedicated to her
father Vered Raphael Schik, who died
when Noa was just two years old.
“My family was created from the
connecting roots of this tree, and as
the firstborn of my immediate family, I
placed myself at the top of the tree so
that it continues to keep growing and
blooming to ever greater heights”.

A Family in a Box
This creative “treasure box” represents a private intimate family with an opening
that adds an element of surprise.
Like a box, families can be open or closed. For Ely’s great grandmother, the events
of the holocaust were a “closed” topic, too painful for sharing. In recent years, she
was able to “open up” and share her past with her family.
The exhibit contains photos and envelopes that summarize each ‘chapter’ in the
family’s life.

people and events will continue to be collected inside the box!”

In this impressive work, we meet Jewish immigrants from Poland and Romania who
immigrated to Costa Rica in the 1930’s and built a warm Jewish community that Yael
calls home. It is Yael’s priority to preserve her family’s story for future generations by
capturing their unique narrative within a remarkable artistic installation. This detailed
and touching family tree moves the viewer to feel an inseparable connection to
Yael’s grand family that has deeply influenced her.

All the World’s A Stage
This family project provided Dafna’s grandmother the platform through which to
share her painful past in Warsaw during WWII, in which her parents tragically
perished. Prior to this, she withheld discussing her difficult story. Dafna took
advantage of what was revealed and decided to supplement her family story with
research about life in Poland before and during the war.

A Roots journey
Daniela quotes from the book The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry:
“They [human-beings] have no roots, which burdens them a great deal.” Daniela’s
conclusion is that “people need roots so they can keep on growing like trees.
If they do not know where they came from, they will not know where to go.”
Therefore, she embarked on a journey of her own to explore her roots.

My Family’s Tradition
“It is our responsibility as a nation to honor past memories, in order that our
forefathers’ history, with all of its sacrifices, not be forgotten. It is thanks to them
that we exist as a nation.” Our parents’ parents were able to leave their families
and homelands, and move to unfamiliar territory - a new, unknown and strange
world. They made it without losing their Jewish identity along the way!

Isidoro’s research enabled him to go back in history and follow in the footsteps
of his forefathers in Haleb, Damascus and Safed, and finally in Mexico where they
all settled.
Learning about their lives provided Isidoro a deeper understanding of his own.
This project expresses gratitude to his grandparents, and to a whole generation
that struggled with a foreign land and language, faced hardships and overcame
difficulties that set an example for future generations.

The Wagon
Albert describes his installation as “a precious and valuable treasure.” The wheels of the
wagon symbolize the great distances that the family travelled through the generations,

Home=Family
Amanda presents the house and family as one. The foundation of the house
symbolizes great grandparents, the floor above, the grandparents, the next floor, the
parents, and on the top floor, the children. This work connected Amanda to parts
of her family previously unknown to her, and taught her to honor and cherish her
ancestors. Since she believes that the nation of Israel is one big family,
her research revealed a family tie between her family and 82% of the Jewish
community in Costa Rica! This confirms her belief in one global Jewish people!

The Violin
“I come from a family in which music has a place of honor.” Amir presents his family
story through the violin of his uncle, on his mother’s side. A similar violin accompanied
his great grandfather as he wandered from Lithuania to Mexico, from there to Costa
Rica, and then back again to Mexico. Undoubtedly, a fascinating story.

Now I Notice that I am Not Alone
Shannon tells us: “Many people contributed to the person I have become today.”
Shannon acknowledges the hardships experienced by her family, who suffered from
anti-Semitism, persecutions, the death of loved ones, and abandonment of property
and belongings to finally escape to unfamiliar lands. However, as Shannon adds,
not everything in the family history was horrible. It is also a story of love, solidarity
and a strong desire to remain a part of the Jewish people. This is the story of four
families that travelled through Germany, Austria, Poland, Bolivia, Colombia, and in
the end arrived in Costa Rica, which welcomed them with open arms.

The Torch
“This is the torch of the past that is in the hands of the present in order to light
up the future.” As a Jew living in Spain and part of the global Jewish peoplehood
community, Ilan acknowledges how this project gave him the chance to explore his
family roots, as well as the broader Jewish peoplehood story. He is conscious of
“why I live at the moment in Spain and why not all Jews live nowadays in Israel”.
This is the story of a family from Morocco that was dispersed in many directions.

Gianni’s amazing Chai display, instantly beckons the observer to open each of the
dozen doors, activating the oral history of the LIFE of Gianni’s family members. Each
door is labeled with “Shalom” in an array of languages expressing the universal
Jewish peoplehood value of peace. The two heritage albums combine copies of
precious archival documents and pictures depicting his family’s worldwide journey
from Tiberias, Damascus, Salonica, Poland, Mexico and San Diego, USA.

Tzedaka Box
Deryn’s Tzedaka box is a clever artistic creation that instantly catches the viewer’s
eye. Covered in a collage of family pictures, it is filled with dozens of precious
“coins”, each containing an insight into a family member’s character and passions.
Tzedaka and acts of kindness represent the core of her family’s values and actions,
and are “equivalent of all the mitzvot of the Torah”, as told in the Talmud. Each
family member speaks to us from between the pages of her creative and colorful
roots album.

‫‪in Moldova, and would freely distribute his bottles of wine among the Jews of the‬‬
‫‪village, to enable them to fulfill the mitzvah of Kiddush.‬‬
‫‪Moreover, the grapes represent her family - each grape grows independently but‬‬
‫‪is still closely connected to the others: “The bond between us is like the closeness‬‬

Legacy Tree Project
Grant’s family tree display is created from the maple tree branches in his backyard
in Massachusetts. While deeply rooted in his American life, Grant also decorates his
tree with Jewish symbols. The menora, dreidel, hamantashen, Torah scroll, hamsah,
Sabbath challah, and kiddush cup, are mixed with his family’s pictures. Grant’s
heritage album features his special relationship with his aunt Karen living in Israel.
She piques his curiosity about Jewish life and Israel through discussions on Jewish
values of learning, education, historical memory and passing on Jewish tradition
and rituals to the next generation. This is a familiar Jewish peoplehood story that
combines the best of both worlds - being a part of the global Jewish community
while appreciating a tradition, land and family far away in Jerusalem.

The World is Open
In this naive work, Alice presents her and her family’s personal connection to the
entire Jewish people - both in Israel and in the worldwide Jewish community.
In addition to the exhibit of an open earth with little chicks, Alice also creates a
family history tree - with herself in the center, at the trunk, and the rest of the family
located on the branches.

The Megillah of Life
As the viewer rotates and turns this traditional scroll, Noa’s family story is unraveled
revealing beautiful photos and stories printed on parchment.
The scroll, created in the shape of an Ashkenazi torah, tells the life story of her
family - starting with Noa, continuing with her parents and brother, to her maternal
and paternal grandfathers who survived the holocaust.

Family Tree of Synagogues
Brandon’s” Family Tree of Synagogues” is an album of copies of archival synagogue
photos that serve as a window to the bygone European communities of his family.
Brandon also includes photos of the proud character of American synagogues where
his family later settled. He showcases the towns and synagogues of his maternal
and paternal families and finishes the album with his own Atlanta congregation.
The secure vs. cautious character of the past Jewish communities from Vilnius, Riga,
and Brody is captured by the mixed styles of architecture and exterior decorations.
Brandon highlights many beautiful synagogues in the states of Massachusetts,
Pennsylvania, Maryland and Georgia, where many of his family reside.

The Sound of the Shofar
Gabrielle’s shofar is a symbol of her roots as well as an emblem of the Jewish
people echoing back to biblical times. Tekiah, Shevarim and Teruah are heard
from this wonderfully sculptured shofar, a replica of the one passed down from
generation to generation in Gabrielle’s family dating back to 1890 in Ottoman
Palestine. Gabrielle always joins her grandfather for the blowing of the 122 year
old shofar at their synagogue.
Gabrielle’s shofar is decorated with images of her great grandparents, flags and
maps of Israel, Egypt and Syria signifying its origins, her roots and as a symbol of
the Jewish people echoing back to biblical times.

Chuppa
Noah’s family tree is delightfully fused within the image of a chuppa, the universal
Jewish value for life and continuity. It is decorated with a multitude of Jewish
symbols, defining a connection to both Jewish ritual and Israel. The viewer can
peek up inside the ceiling of the chuppa to see his family tree. The 18 inch poles
highlight the importance of “Chai” or life. Much like the Jewish people, the wooden
rods are a rainbow of colors unified by Jewish tradition and collective memory.

Life’s A Puzzle
“Life can be puzzling at times and it can take a while to put everything back
together again, but once completed, with the help of your family, you are left with
beautiful results.” This motto guided Jessy while he skillfully designed this wooden
box that captures the spirit of his great grandfather, a former carpenter in Poland
prior to WWII. Inside, there are six puzzles made of hand crafted cubes, each side
showing another family image. Every cube portrays the importance of another
family member. Jessy’s display captures the essence of Jewish Peoplehood - like
one family, we are all an integral part of the puzzle, a mosaic relying on one another
to complete the story.

Travel Adventure
Jordan’s work is inspired by his grandfather’s brave leadership as a U.S. Air Force
pilot in the Vietnam War. Since Jordan’s grandfather was constantly on the move,
he designed his display as a suitcase growing grass roots. Inside, Jordan plants
symbols of his family’s life such as: a passport, travel destinations, soccer and a
dog. His family album tells the familiar story of the wandering Jewish people. Yet
his father is rooted to community synagogues and celebrating Jewish practices
and traditions wherever his family lived. This family story is a much broader Jewish
peoplehood story deeply committed to Jewish ritual, values and heritage.

‫בראש המוצג כותבת ג’סי שזהו “סיפור על רכבת‪ ,‬כדורגל וקצת מזל”‪ .‬סבא רבא של ג’סי‪ ,‬לא רק‬
‫הצליח להימלט מציפורני הנאצים כאשר אחייו והוא הצליחו להערים על חיילים ולנצח אותם במשחק‬
‫כדורגל אלא גם ניצח במשחק חייו!‬
‫אפילו שעבודה זאת נשענת על התקופה החשוכה בחיי יהודי צ’כוסלובקיה‪ ,‬מצליח המוצג לבטא את‬
‫התושיה‪ ,‬האומץ‪ ,‬והיצירתיות של הרוח היהודית המצליחה לשרוד כנגד כל הסיכויים‪.‬‬
‫‪A Train Ride, Soccer & a Bit of Luck‬‬
‫‪Jessie calls her display, “A Train Ride, Soccer and a Bit of Luck” because her‬‬
‫‪grandfather didn’t just beat the Nazi opponent at soccer but won the game of his‬‬
‫‪life! Although the backdrop to this display is the murderous period of the Holocaust‬‬
‫‪in Czechoslovakia, it reveals tremendous ingenuity, courage, creativity and a Jewish‬‬
‫‪will to live and thrive against all odds.‬‬

My Family Story is Beit Hatfutsot-The Museum of the Jewish People’s flagship
program and competition, and one of the most far-reaching educational initiatives
with remarkable success in generating excitement and interest in Jewish family
legacies. Young participants, in Israel and the worldwide Jewish community, embark
on a multigenerational journey to the past, an exploration of their roots that
culminates in an artistic installation that captures their personal and family stories,
and connects them to the greater story of the Jewish people.
