Ambassador of the Month Tony Nalli The one thing a member of the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce is able to count on, is an introduction to other area businesses to expand the success of our local economy. The Chamber recognizes members of the Ambassadors every month and this month, I am honored to be the Ambassador of the Month. The success of my business is a direct result of my active participation and membership in the Ambassadors and the Chamber. I enjoy the monthly programs, the Ribbon Cuttings and the friendships I have made since I joined the West Pasco Chamber. Being an Ambassador has been the best for my business. I have doubled my business with the ABC’s (Always Buy Chamber). I have seen the transition of many small businesses from marginal to successful through the networking opportunities the Chamber has given them, just as it has for me. Chamber membership to a customer means integrity, honesty and trust. My recommendation is that any business that is not a member, join NOW. After you learn about the Chamber, take it to the next level and become an Ambassador. I don’t need to talk about me, because my success is due to the Chamber and Ambassadors and as the Vice-Chair of the Ambasssadors, I say “Thank You” for this honor. Box 1766 • New Port Richey, FL 34656 Jim Wood – 727-492-9576 [email protected] MASA is 40 years old with 1,000,000 members covered worldwide. MASA provides life-saving emergency transportation services while at home, traveling anywhere in the world, on or off the job to protect members from catastrophic financial loss. Members are always $0 (zero dollars) out of pocket for 911 ground ambulance, helicopter transport, and fixed wing air craft no matter what Medicare or other insurance pays worldwide. If traveling over 100 miles away from home, MASA will even return the vehicle home. Especially when traveling, most insurance companies only offer limited coverage for emergency type transportation, if any at all, and generally the clients have to shell out the money and hope they will be reimbursed upon return home. There are no dollar limits on MASA plans. One call to MASA and we take over. We offer peace of mind to our clients. The average cost for an air ambulance is $20,000 while a fixed wing flight from Scotland can exceed $60,000. These benefits are not to be confused with travelers insurance, which is mostly for medical expenses while traveling and is purchased for a limited amount of time. MASA offers one year, five year, and lifetime memberships and clients are covered 24/7/360. MASA gets people home, that’s what we do! Pasco County Clerk & Comptroller’s Office by Paula S. The mission of the Sertoma Speech & Hearing Foundation of Florida is to provide quality developmental and rehabilitative services, products and education--primarily to children--throughout Florida, in a caring and compassionate environment, never limited by the ability to pay. Chamber News • Page 7 Office of the Superintendent of Schools: Kurt Browning Sheriff by Sheriff Chris Nocco Scams come in all forms and fashions and the focus is almost exclusively on one thing: parting you from your money. We have to be diligent when it comes to crooks and their scams. Hopefully these tips will help you avoid the headache of losing money and repairing your credit. With April 15 quickly approaching, thieves are on the lookout for your tax dollars. Some in Pasco have received phone calls from those claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Those callers threaten to take legal action if funds are not paid immediately. This is absolutely a scam. If you have experienced this, please visit www.irs.gov/uac Report-Phishing to get help. There is also the persistent problem of skimming. This is when a device is placed either on or inside an ATM machine or even fuel pumps. That electronic device will then record your bank card information, allowing the crook to duplicate your card and use it at their leisure. Sometimes small cameras are placed near a keypad in an attempt to record your PIN. There are a few simple things you can do in an attempt to avoid being a victim of a skimmer. First, thoroughly inspect an ATM’s credit card reader. If it appears to be loose or it’s damaged or appears to be altered, don’t use it. When you do use an ATM, cover your hand to shield your PIN from being secretly recorded. Even better, If you must get cash back, go inside of a grocery store. You may have to make a small purchase, but it almost guarantees no one else has access to your card information. If you want to pay for gas, go inside and pay the cashier instead of paying at the pump. For more information on skimmers, visit the FBI’s link on the matter: www.fbi.gov/news/ stories/2011/july/atm_071411. Scammers have also attempted to use gift cards to get money. In one ruse, the crook calls a number and tells the person they are holding a family member hostage. He tells the person on the other line if they want to ensure their family member returns home safely, money must be placed on a gift card and the PIN must given to the caller. In a different version of that scam, a caller claims to be from a lottery company and in order to collect you alleged winnings, the potential victim must purchase a gift card and place a certain amount of money on that card. The citizen must then give the caller the PIN number. Please, don’t fall for those scams. In the hostage hoax, family members have been found to be safe and no contact was ever made with them. There are a number of other scams that can be highlighted, but a great source is the Federal Trade Commission, which has dedicated a portion of their site (www.consumer.ftc.gov/scamalerts) to scams of all stripes. Please take time and visit the site, it could save you headache, heartache and the loss of your hardearned money. Page 8 • Chamber News Florida Standards and the Florida Standards Assessment by Kurt S. Browning, Superintendent of Pasco County Public Schools Florida has had education standards since the 1970s, and the School Board and I agree that we have to assess students to make sure that we are teaching them those standards. Standardized tests are useful for measuring whether we are doing that. Accountability is also necessary. We accept that we must be held accountable for providing students with a high quality education based on the state’s standards. However, I am concerned that Florida is moving too quickly to implement the new assessments without knowing whether they are valid, reliable, and fair. I fear that teachers have not had the time they need to adjust to the new standards and integrate them into their lesson plans. I also worry that our technology infrastructure is not adequate to administer these online tests. In addition, I am afraid that many students do not have the computer literacy and keyboarding skills to successfully take the timed exams on computers. We are working with the Legislature and Department of Education on these issues to convince the state to confirm the reliability of the new assessment and make sure that all districts have the capacity to administer them. This test will be more challenging than the FCAT and FCAT 2.0, and one of the many reasons we are asking the state to give us more time to fully implement the standards and assessments. We still will administer the exams, and we expect every student to take the exams. So much rides on these tests, and we hope to convince state leaders to slow down, make this a benchmark year, and allow teachers and students time to learn the standards. Utilities Branch Water Poster Contest Pasco County Utilities & Florida Government Utilities (FGUA) annual water poster contest is underway. All Pasco County Elementary Schools are encouraged to participate. The theme this year is “Water, Water Everywhere”. Students can draw a poster showing their favorite water fact or tip. For additional information, learning activities and contest information visit http://watercontest.org. Recycling Drop Off Changes Due to the ongoing and continuing problems of illegal and contaminated dumping at several of our unmanned and unsecured recycling drop-off facilities, the County needs to find other manned and secured sites. We will work with other companies that will assist and cooperate with the County to arrange for placement of new drop off facilities. We cannot properly maintain and operate unmanned and unsecured drop-off facilities. We are evaluating several options and will find suitable substitution sites in the near future. Due to the above, the following drop-off sites were closed as of January 28, 2015: Anclote Gulf Park (Holiday); Pine Hill (New Port Richey); and Tampa Bay Times (Bayonet Point). We ask the public to bear with us until other sites will open for disposal of recycling materials. Chasco Fiesta™ Is Coming! You’ve all heard the saying “if you don’t vote you can’t complain,” but the same holds true for those of us that vote, complain, and don’t tell anyone who can do anything about it! Our newly elected and mid-term legislators are ready to get to work with the opening of the legislative session on March 3, 2015. Now is the perfect time for citizens to offer input and become involved in policy making decisions. Both the Florida Senate and House have websites that give information on the calendar, committees, agendas, and upcoming bills for consideration.
