‫השיבה לרעוּת‬
‫"חזרתי לרעוּת כדי לתת לאחרים את מה שאני קיבלתי כאן"‪ ,‬אומרת‬
‫אליזבת לאבריק מסלובקיה שנפצעה בפיגוע‪ ,‬השתקמה במרכז הרפואי‬
‫שיקומי רעוּת ושבה אלינו כמתנדבת‪.‬‬
‫"באתי לישראל בפעם הראשונה ב‪ ,"2002-‬מספרת אליזבת בפנים‬
‫מחייכות‪" .‬בסלובקיה הייתי כלכלנית והייתה לי עבודה טובה‪ ,‬אבל אף‬
‫פעם לא טסתי במטוס‪ .‬לכן החלטתי לבוא לישראל ולעבוד כאן‪ ,‬כמטפלת‬
‫בזקנים"‪ .‬ארבע שנים לאחר מכן‪ ,‬בחופשת חג הפסחא‪ ,‬כשהייתה בדרכה‬
‫לתחנת מוניות ליד התחנה המרכזית החדשה בתל אביב‪ ,‬התפוצץ‬
‫בקרבתה מחבל מתאבד‪.‬‬
‫פרק א'‪ :‬לחזור הביתה בריאה‬
‫"אני לא זוכרת כלום"‪ ,‬אומרת אליזבת‪" ,‬נפצעתי קשה‪ .‬כל הצד הימני שלי‬
‫נפגע‪ .‬היו לי כוויות ופצעים בפנים‪ ,‬בידיים ובגוף‪ ,‬ושברים בשתי הרגליים‪.‬‬
‫ברגל ימין היה שבר פתוח‪ .‬הייתי עשרה ימים בלי הכרה"‪ .‬היא התעוררה‬
‫מהתרדמת לצליל קולם של שני בניה‪ ,‬שהגיעו מסלובקיה כדי להיות‬
‫לצידה‪ ,‬ובקושי רב פקחה את עיניה‪" .‬את התמונה שראיתי לא אשכח אף‬
‫פעם"‪ ,‬היא מספרת‪" ,‬שני זוגות של עיניים כחולות‪ ,‬העיניים של הילדים‬
‫שלי‪ ,‬מביטות בי‪ ,‬בעיניהם פחד‪ .‬זה מה שנתן לי כוח לעבור בחודשים‬
‫שלאחר מכן את ‪ -‬הניתוחים‪ ,‬הכאבים‪ ,‬השיקום‪ ,‬רק בכדי לא לראות שוב‬
‫את הפחד בעיניים של הילדים שלי"‪.‬‬
‫אליזבת הגיעה לשיקום אצלנו במרכז הרפואי שיקומי רעוּת לאחר שעברה‬
‫סדרת ניתוחים‪.‬‬
‫"הילדים חזרו הביתה ואין לי כאן משפחה"‪ ,‬היא נזכרת‪" .‬אבל בכל זאת‪,‬‬
‫ברעוּת אף פעם לא הייתי לבד‪ .‬אילנה‪ ,‬חברתי הטובה‪ ,‬באה לבקר‪ .‬הייתה‬
‫פה מתנדבת דוברת הונגרית שממש 'אימצה' אותי‪ ,‬והצוות כל הזמן‬
‫עודד אותי‪ .‬אהבתי לצאת החוצה בכסא הגלגלים ולשבת בשמש‪ ,‬ותמיד‬
‫ניגשו אליי אנשים‪ ,‬עובדים ומתנדבים‪ ,‬עם מילים טובות‪ .‬המילים‪ ,‬העידוד‬
‫והחיוכים‪ ,‬עזרו לי לא פחות מהטיפולים"‪.‬‬
‫אבל היו גם חודשים ארוכים של פיזיותרפיה מפרכת‪ .‬אליזבת עבדה קשה‬
‫מאוד‪" .‬המטרה שלי הייתה לחזור הביתה בריאה"‪ .‬היא מספרת‪" ,‬רציתי‬
‫לקום מהר מכיסא הגלגלים‪ ,‬וכאן לימדו אותי ללכת שוב‪ ,‬כמו תינוקת‪.‬‬
‫כשעשיתי את הצעד הראשון שלי‪ ,‬כל הצוות בפיזיותרפיה מחא לי כפיים‪.‬‬
‫כולם אמרו‪' :‬כל הכבוד!' הייתי מאוד גאה‪ .‬אני זוכרת את הפעם הראשונה‬
‫שנעלתי נעליים ואת הפעם הראשונה שקמתי והתקלחתי בעמידה! כל‬
‫הזמן חשבתי‪ :‬אנשים לא יודעים כמה זה חשוב‪ .‬כשאנחנו בריאים‪ ,‬אנחנו‬
‫לא מבינים איזה מזל גדול יש לנו‪ .‬אמרתי לעצמי‪ :‬אם אלוהים יעזור לי ואהיה‬
‫שוב בריאה‪ ,‬לא אכתוב מכתבי תודה כדי שיתלו אותם על הקירות‪ .‬אני‬
‫אחזור לרעוּת ואתן לאחרים את כל הטוב שאני קיבלתי כאן"‪.‬‬
‫אחרי שבעה חודשים של שיקום תובעני‪ ,‬תקווה בלתי פוסקת ומאמץ אדיר‪,‬‬
‫הגיעה אליזבת אל המטרה‪ :‬היא חזרה הביתה‪ ,‬לסלובקיה‪ ,‬לילדיה‪ ,‬בריאה‪.‬‬
‫פרק ב'‪ :‬המתנה שלי לרעוּת‬
‫במרץ ‪ 2013‬נכנסה אליזבת לאבריק שוב בשערי מרכז רפואי שיקומי רעוּת‪-‬‬
‫והפעם על רגליה‪ ,‬כאישה בריאה‪ .‬כמתנדבת‪" .‬זאת המתנה שלי לרעוּת"‪ ,‬היא‬
‫מחייכת‪.‬‬
‫המשתקמת לשעבר הפכה כעת למתנדבת 'במשרה מלאה'‪ ,‬ובכוונתה‬
‫לשהות עימנו חודשים רבים‪ .‬היא מתגוררת במגורי המתנדבים במרכז‪,‬‬
‫ומדי בוקר מתייצבת במחלקות‪" .‬כל בוקר אני עוזרת לאנשים במצב סיעודי‬
‫לאכול ארוחת בוקר‪ .‬אחר כך אני עובדת עם מטופלים בגינה הטיפולית‬
‫ובתעסוקה הטיפולית‪ .‬פגשתי פה ילדה במצב קשה‪ ,‬שאף אחד לא בא‬
‫לבקר אותה‪ ,‬ואני יוצאת איתה לטייל בפארק‪ .‬היא לא יכולה לדבר‪ ,‬אבל‬
‫כשהיא רואה אותי היא מוחאת כפיים‪ ,‬ואני שמחה‪"...‬‬
‫ובעיקר‪ ,‬אליזבת מעניקה למטופלים ברעוּת את האהבה שכל כך עזרה לה‪:‬‬
‫"כשאני רואה אדם בכסא גלגלים‪ ,‬אני ניגשת‪ ,‬מחייכת אליו‪ ,‬שואלת מה‬
‫שלומו‪ ,‬מציעה עזרה‪ .‬כשמישהי מתחילה ללכת בפיזיותרפיה‪ ,‬אני אומרת‬
‫לה 'כל הכבוד!'‪ .‬כי אני זוכרת כמה אני שמחתי כשעודדו אותי ודיברו איתי‪.‬‬
‫ואני יודעת כמה זה חשוב‪ .‬בשביל אדם חולה‪ ,‬מילים טובות הן תרופה‬
‫נפלאה"‪.‬‬
‫אנו ברעוּת מאושרים לראותה איתנו‪ :‬כמה טוב לראות את האישה האמיצה‬
‫הזאת‪ ,‬שהגיעה אלינו חסרת אונים‪ ,‬והנה היום היא בריאה לגמרי‪ ,‬הולכת‬
‫על רגליה ומגשימה את חלומותיה‪.‬‬
‫אנחנו זוכרים אותה היטב‪ ,‬זוכרים את החיוך ואת הנחישות שהביאה עמה‬
‫אל כל הטיפולים המפרכים ושמחים כל כך לחבק אותה היום כאחת‬
‫מאיתנו‪ ,‬כמתנדבת שלנו‪ .‬מי אם לא אליזבת מבינה את המהות והחשיבות‬
‫של 'רוח רעות'?‬
‫מידעון רעּות ‪2014-2013‬‬
‫זוכרים ותומכים‬
‫בעת האחרונה בורכה עמותת רעוּת במספר שותפויות‬
‫חשובות‪ ,‬עם משפחות המבקשות להנציח את זכר‬
‫יקיריהן‪ .‬כל אחת מהיוזמות מאפשרת לנו לספק‬
‫למטופלינו שירותים מתקדמים וייחודיים‪ ,‬בשמם של‬
‫אותם אנשים אהובים‪ ,‬שהלכו לעולמם‪:‬‬
‫התכנית לתעסוקה טיפולית על שם רוברט ולאה טרוי ז"ל‬
‫משפחת פרוידנשטיין‪ ,‬מידידינו הותיקים והנדיבים ביותר‪ ,‬ייסדה את‬
‫התכנית לתעסוקה טיפולית על שם רוברט ולאה טרוי‪ ,‬לזכר הוריה היקרים‬
‫של שרון פרוידנשטיין‪ .‬במסגרת הפרויקט נהנים המטופלים במרכז רפואי‬
‫שיקומי רעוּת מפעילויות פנאי נורמטיביות‪ ,‬שמשמחות ומעודדות אותם‬
‫עד מאוד‪ ,‬כמו יציאה לטיולים ולקונצרטים וכן מטיפולים מיוחדים כגון טיפול‬
‫באמנות‪ ,‬טיפול במוסיקה‪ ,‬טיפול באמצעות בעלי חיים וטיפול בדרמה‪.‬‬
‫‘מתן לצמיחה' ‪ -‬תכנית צמיחה ממשבר על שם מתן בד"ט ז"ל‬
‫מתן בד"ט היה נער בן ‪ 18‬שהעתיד פרוס לפניו ‪ -‬נאה‪ ,‬מוכשר ושאפתן‬
‫בכל דבר שנגע בו‪ ,‬עד שנפגע קשה בתאונת צלילה לפני כ‪ 14-‬שנה‪.‬‬
‫בעקבות הפגיעה היה מתן מאושפז במרכז רפואי שיקומי רעוּת‪ ,‬עד‬
‫שלצערנו נפטר לפני כשנה‪ .‬הוריו ואחיו בחרו להנציח את זכרו באמצעות‬
‫תכנית מיוחדת וחדשנית‪ ,‬המשקפת את המסע שעברו הם עצמם מאז‬
‫הטרגדיה‪ :‬פרויקט צמיחה ממשבר שזכה לשם ‘מתן לצמיחה'‪ .‬המודל‬
‫פורץ הדרך‪ ,‬שפותח על ידי צוות העובדים הסוציאליים של מרכז רפואי‬
‫שיקומי רעוּת‪ ,‬יסייע למטופלים ולבני משפחותיהם להתחזק‪ ,‬להתמודד‬
‫עם השינויים הנובעים מהמחלה‪/‬פציעה ולהיבנות מהשברים‪ .‬התכנית‬
‫תכלול הכשרות מקצועיות בנושא צמיחה ממשבר לכל צוותי המרכז‬
‫בכל המקצועות והדרגים‪ ,‬לצד טיפולים פרטניים וסדנאות למטופלים‬
‫ולמשפחות‪ .‬כמו כן ילווה הפרויקט במחקר אקדמי‪ ,‬שיאפשר להפיץ אותו‬
‫בעתיד למוסדות אחרים בישראל ובעולם‪.‬‬
‫פרויקט להעצמת צוותים על שם דוד ושולמית פרידמן ז"ל‬
‫דוד פרידמן כיהן במסירות כיושב ראש רעוּת במשך למעלה מעשור‪ ,‬ורעייתו‬
‫שולמית הייתה מתנדבת נמרצת ורבת השפעה בעמותה‪ .‬לאחר מותם‬
‫בחרו ילדיהם להמשיך את דרכם‪ ,‬ולבסס את הקשר המשפחתי עם רעוּת‬
‫באמצעות חיזוק האנשים העוסקים במלאכה ‪ -‬הצוותים הטיפוליים שלנו‪.‬‬
‫בתמיכתם נהנים אנשי הצוות מהרצאות מעשירות‪ ,‬מכנסים ומהכשרות‬
‫ייעודיות כגון‪ :‬הכשרה מתקדמת לרופאים ולאחיות בנושא החייאה‪,‬‬
‫כנסים מקצועיים לפיזיותרפיסטים ולמטפלים בעיסוק‪ ,‬סדנאות תקשורת‬
‫בינאישית לכלל אנשי הצוות‪ ,‬קורסי ניהול ולוגיסטיקה ועוד‪.‬‬
‫תודתנו העמוקה נתונה לכל התורמים הנדיבים‪ .‬אנו זוכרים את יקיריהם‬
‫באהבה ובהערכה‪ ,‬וגאים להשתתף בהנצחתם באמצעות הפעילות‬

‫טכנולוגיות חדשניות במרכז רפואי שיקומי רעוּת‬

‫‪ - SmartStep‬מדרך ממוחשב המיועד לטיפול במשתקמים עם פגיעה‬

‫‪ -‬במוצרים המכילים סיבי נחושת‪.‬‬
‫מסע של רעּות וגבורה‬
‫משלחת רעוּת ביקרה בפולין וצעדה במצעד החיים‬
‫“קר כמו האוריגינל זה לא יהיה‪ "...‬אמר סטפן וייס בן ה‪ ,86-‬וחייך את חיוכו‬
‫השקט אל האישה הצעירה ממנו בשנים רבות‪ ,‬ששאלה כיצד יתמודד‬
‫עם הקור העז הצפוי בפולין‪ .‬ואז עלו שניהם למטוס בנתב"ג‪ ,‬והמריאו ‪-‬‬
‫עם שאר חבריהם למשלחת רעוּת ‪ -‬למסע בעקבות יהדות פולין‪ ,‬שהגיע‬
‫לשיאו במצעד החיים ביום השואה ‪.2013‬‬
‫המסע לפולין הופך למסורת ברעוּת‪ .‬השנה‪ ,‬בעקבות החוויה הבלתי‬
‫נשכחת ב‪ ,2011-‬יצאה לדרך משלחת בת כ‪ 35-‬איש ‪ -‬עובדים‪ ,‬מנהלים‪,‬‬
‫חברי עמותה‪ ,‬דיירים ובני משפחה‪ ,‬בהובלת יושבת הראש מרב מנדלבאום‬
‫והמנכ"ל אלכס יעקובי‪ .‬וכולם ייצגו בכבוד את העמותה‪ ,‬ונשאו עמם‬
‫מורשת מפוארת של עזרה לשארית הפליטה‪ :‬כי רעוּת נוסדה בתל אביב‬
‫בשנות ה‪ 30-‬כדי לסייע לפליטים שזרמו לכאן מאירופה‪ ,‬ומעניקה עד היום‬
‫בית חם לניצולי שואה קשישים‪ ,‬חולים ועריריים‪.‬‬
‫שניים מניצולי השואה המתגוררים במוסדות רעוּת הצטרפו למסע המרגש‪:‬‬
‫סטפן‪ ,‬בעל החיוך החרישי‪ ,‬ניצול אושוויץ שמתגורר בדיור הקהילתי של‬
‫אירוע נשים‬
‫מרב מנדלבאום‪ ,‬יו"ר עמותת רעוּת ערכה בחודש יוני במרכז רייך לאזרחים‬
‫ותיקים שבתל אביב‪ ,‬המנוהל ע"י עמותת רעוּת‪ ,‬את אירוע “חכמת אישה‬
‫במבט הזמן" במעמד ח"כ ד"ר עליזה לביא‪ ,‬יו"ר הוועדה לקידום מעמד‬
‫האישה בכנסת‪.‬‬
‫במסגרת האירוע שוחחה העיתונאית ואשת התקשורת פאר‪-‬לי שחר עם‬
‫הסופרת מירה מגן על ספרה האחרון ‘עיניים כחולות מדי'‪.‬‬
‫בדבריה הזכירה הגב' מגן את אשר כתבה בספרה ‪ -‬כי רעוּת הוא ‘מקום‬
‫רעוּת מזה כ‪ 35-‬שנה‪ ,‬וצבי קופולביץ בן ה‪ ,89-‬דייר בבית האבות בית‬
‫שלום‪ .‬משתתף נוסף היה יהודה בן ישר‪ ,‬בן ‪ ,90‬מדיירי בית האבות ג'ני‬
‫ברויאר‪ ,‬שעלה בנעוריו מגרמניה הנאצית לארץ ישראל‪ .‬שלושת הגברים‬
‫האלה‪ ,‬שראו בעיניהם זוועות אינספור ויכלו להן‪ ,‬היו גיבוריו האמיתיים של‬
‫המסע‪ .‬צבי הוביל את כל חברי המשלחת אל קבר אביו בבית הקברות‬
‫היהודי העצום בעיר לודז'‪ ,‬ושם הם התפללו עמו במניין וערכו לאב אזכרה‬
‫יהודית כהלכתה‪ .‬בהמשך השתתפו נציגי רעוּת ‪ -‬והניצולים הקשישים‬
‫ביניהם ‪ -‬בטיש בקבר (רבי) אלימלך מליז'נסק‪ ,‬התפללו תפילת מנחה‬
‫בישיבה בלובלין‪ ,‬לאחר מכן ביקרו במחנה ההשמדה מיידנק‪.‬‬
‫בסוף המסע עמדו כולם יחדיו מול שערי אושוויץ‪ ,‬בקור משתק שחדר‬
‫לעצמות‪ ,‬תחת שמיים קודרים וכבדים כמו הכאב עצמו‪ .‬שם‪ ,‬רק שם‪,‬‬
‫הם טעמו קמצוץ מחורף נעוריו של סטפן במחנה המוות הקפוא והנורא‪.‬‬
‫והצעירים שבחבורה נשאו עיניים אל שלושת הזקנים‪ ,‬הזקופים והחזקים‪,‬‬
‫שקומתם לא שחה מול הכפור והזיכרונות‪ ,‬וידעו‪ :‬כך נראית הגבורה!‬
‫שלוקח את הזקנים ברצינות ולא שם עליהם מדבקות של פג תוקפם' ‪-‬‬
‫זאת‪ ,‬לאחר שביקרה במקום והתרשמה מהעשייה‪.‬‬
‫קהל הנשים היה מורכב מנשים משפיעות בחברה ובמשק‪ ,‬עובדות‬
‫עמותת רעוּת וכמובן אזרחיות ותיקות‪.‬‬

About Reuth
Reuth is one of Israel’s leading nonprofits in the fields of health, welfare and old age. Founded in Tel Aviv in 1937 by a group of women recently
arrived from Germany, under the leadership of Mrs. Paula Barth, it provided food and shelter to newly arrived immigrants who were making a fresh
start in their new homeland. Expanding its activities through the years, Reuth established a range of programs and institutions for the community,
including: Reuth Medical & Rehabilitation Center, three retirement seniors homes, protected subsidized housing for low-income seniors, the ReuthEshel Information Center, recreational centers for the elderly, the Agam Center for Eating Disorders and more. Yet the vision that guides all Reuth
operations has remained the same: providing the very best solutions in health, welfare for the elderly, nursing care and rehabilitation, inspired at all
times by a sense of mission and friendship.

Dutch Friends
Two very successful Reuth events were held recently in Holland.
Our dynamic Dutch Friends organized a fascinating evening
in honor of Reuth, with a lecture by leading medical personality
Professor Weinstein. Over 70 people attended and met with Miriam
Frankel, who told them all about Reuth and its activities.
Miriam Frankel was invited to speak to a group of Christian Friends
of Israel at headquarters in Nijkerk, as part of the organization’s
‘Getting to Know Israel’ series. The enthusiastic participants
donated generously towards the purchase of new wheelchairs at
the Reuth Medical & Rehabilitation Center.
British Friends
Over 350 guests joined in an evening appropriately called a
night of Magic and Laughter, held recently in London. The Israeli
Ambassador to the Court of St James, Daniel Taub, spoke of
the imperative role Reuth plays in the social welfare and health
infrastructure of the State of Israel. Merav Mandelbaum, Reuth
chairperson, gratefully thanked everyone for their support. Ody
Shashoua, whose father had spent 9 years in the Reuth Medical
Center, talked of the devoted and professional staff who cared for
his dear father. In addition the local Chair, Neil Ferber, spoke of
the project that the event was raising funds for; the purchase of
equipment for the RMC. It truly was a successful and fun event!
Silent Disco
The beautiful roof top of the Reuth Medical & Rehabilitation Center
is normally a place of respite for the hospital’s rehabilitation and
chronic care patients, but recently it was turned into a fabulous
disco! Two hundred young friends of Reuth turned up for the first
event held by Reuth’s Young Associates International Board,
aiming to gain the younger crowd’s recognition for this veteran
organization – and it was certainly a terrific success!
The concept was initiated by the International Board, led by
dedicated volunteers, Marleen Litt from New York and Uri Ullmann
from London. The evening brought together guests from countries
around the world, including; Australia, England, Switzerland, South
Africa, the United States and Israel.
American Friends
Last year, Tamara Freudenstein spent her summer as a part of the
internship program at the Reuth Medical & Rehabilitation Center.
Upon her return to New York, she was determined to continue to
help. At her instigation and with her tremendous dedication and
leadership, Reuth held a Runway Fashion show in Manhattan. It
was a wonderful success with over 250 people attending. Truly a
young face to our organization!

For the second year, the British Friends of Reuth have run their
annual Sunflower growing competition for Jewish primary schools
across the UK. More than 300 pupils took part. The children did very
well growing their sunflowers and raising funds for the Roof Garden
at the Reuth Medical Center. When the competition finished, the
top three children won prizes and the winner was presented with
his prize and certificate at a school assembly.
Women's Evening
Reuth Chairperson Merav Mandelbaum hosted a unique event
entitled ‘A Woman’s Wisdom through Time’. The evening was held
in June at the Reuth Reich Center for Senior citizens in Tel Aviv, in
the presence of MK Dr. Aliza Lavi, Chairperson of the Knesset’s
Committee for Advancing the Status of Women.
Media person and reporter, Peer-Li Shachar, spoke with writer,
Mira Magen, about Magen’s new book, “The Bluest Eyes”. Magen
mentioned a passage from her book, where she had written that
Reuth is “a place that takes old people seriously, and doesn’t label
them with a ‘past expiration date’ sticker.” She wrote this following
a visit to Reuth, which made a strong impression. The all-female
audience included influential women from different circles in Israel’s
society and economy, as well as Reuth employees and senior citizens.
Merav Mandelbaum told the participants that Reuth cares for the
elderly, viewing them as wise and highly experienced individuals,
who, far from being ‘transparent’, wish to be play an active part in
their surroundings.
For the third year running, Reuth in Israel hosted a group of young
women from New York for the 2013 summer internship program at
the Reuth Medical & Rehabilitation Center. Participants spent time
volunteering in departments, learning about the medical field, and
meeting with staff and patients, thereby becoming a part of the
Reuth experience.
Reuth has been awarded Midot’s
Seal of Effectiveness
Reuth has been awarded the Israeli Seal of
Effectiveness, by the Midot organization.
Midot, a well-known Israeli organization
evaluates NPOs’ effectiveness and examines
their ability to create social value and improve
the lives of their beneficiaries.
During the rating process Midot examined
a range of organizational capacities, such as:
the organization’s planning and performance
abilities, how it measures its activities and sustains
processes of learning and participation, its human
capital, its financial management, and more.
The awarded Seal of Effectiveness was based
on Reuth’s ability to provide evidence relating to
measuring its activities’ success and results, the organization’s
leadership, ethics, transparency, finances, audit, and more.

Remember and Support
Over the past months, we, at Reuth, have been blessed
with partnerships that enable us to proudly remember
and honor loved ones who have passed away, through
dedication of memorial projects providing new and
upgraded services and activities at Reuth
Robert and Leah Troy Memorial Recreational
Therapy Program
The Freudenstein family has continued on with their long-going support
of Reuth by generously establishing the Robert and Leah Troy Memorial
Recreational Therapy Program, in memory of Sharon Freudenstein’s
dear parents.
This project enables our patients, at the Reuth Medical Center, to
benefit from programs that give them the opportunity to carry out
'regular' activities that truly raise their spirits. The program provides a
steady and varied schedule of recreational activities, such as outings
and concerts, and in-house professional therapies, such as; art therapy,
music therapy, animal assisted therapy, and drama therapy.
Growth from Crisis in Memory Of Matan Badet
Matan Badet was an 18 year-old budding student and outdoors fan
when severely injured in a diving accident, over 14 years ago. As a
result, Matan was hospitalized at the Reuth Medical Center until he sadly
passed away just a few months ago. Matan’s family chose to dedicate a
program in his memory that truly defines their journey since the tragedy
- A project of Growth from Tragedy and development through crisis in
memory of Matan. This model, developed by the professional social work
staff at the hospital, will serve as a ground breaking development for
strengthening of patients and families dealing with crisis and change,
due to illness and injury. It will involve in-house training to all staff levels,
individual and group therapies for the patients and their families and
will be accompanied by research and a steering committee of leading
professional and community figures.
Staff Empowerment Project at the Reuth
Medical Center in Memory of David and Shulamit
Friedman
Mr. David Friedman was the dedicated Chairman of Reuth for over
10 years and his wife Shulamit was a motivated and motivating Reuth
volunteer. Their children chose to reconfirm the family connection to
Reuth, by strengthening others and remembering their parents.
Through their generosity, Reuth staff is sent to conferences and
training programs and in-house lectures are arranged. They include
advanced CPR training for doctors and nurses, conferences and
training programs for physiotherapists and occupational therapists,
interpersonal communication workshops for hospital staffs, and
logistics and management courses.
We are grateful to all these generous donors and proud to remember
their loved ones through such important ongoing work.
Innovative Technologies at Reuth Medical & Rehabilitation Center
Reuth Medical & Rehabilitation Center leads the way in technological innovation, offering its patients a variety of
advanced rehabilitation methods. It brings together the best of the leading technologies in this field - all made in Israel:
Four sensor systems by MediTouch
Ltd. – Hand Tutor, Leg Tutor, Arm Tutor and 3D
Tutor – which help patients with orthopedic and
neurological damage improve body movement
at various joints. The systems are attached to the
body at different locations, enabling both therapist
and patient to accurately monitor the range of
motion, using feedback displayed on a screen. For
the patient, this is a challenging game driving him to
improve his active motor abilities, while the therapist
receives vital and reliable information regarding the
joints’ ranges of motion – both active and passive. The applied research
which tested the first system in the series – the glove named Hand
Tutor – was conducted at the Physiotherapy Unit of Reuth Medical &
Rehabilitation Center.
Two devices by Bioness Ltd. – L300 and L300+ - Designed
to improve the walking quality and balance of individuals undergoing
rehabilitation from brain damage. Both devices deliver electrical
stimulation to weakened or paralyzed leg muscles, thus acting as a
local replacement for impaired brain functions. L300, attached to the
shin, stimulates the muscle that lifts the foot in patients suffering from
foot drop, a common symptom of brain damage. L300+, affixed to the
thigh slightly above the knee, enables the patient to control knee motion,
which is vital for walking stability. The applied research which tested the
L300+ was conducted at the Physiotherapy Unit of Reuth Medical &
Rehabilitation Center.
The Re-Step system by Step of Mind Ltd. – Improving walking
stability and balance in patients suffering from various forms of brain
damage. The system is based on a pair of special shoes with four
pistons fixed in their soles. The pistons, controlled by special software,

move up and down, so that the patient’s stepping
angle changes at random. A world-class innovation,
this technology is based on years of research in
brain and motion sciences. This unique treatment
is currently provided in only one place in Israel: at
the Reuth Step of Mind Institute in Reuth Medical &
Rehabilitation Center..
SmartStep – A computerized surface designed
for patients with orthopedic or neurological damage,
as well as for people suffering from Complex
Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) in the foot. The system, based on
combined visual and auditory feedback, improves the patient’s ability
to bear weight on his feet.
AposTherapy – Improving the walking and balance of patients
with a variety of orthopedic and neurological conditions. The method
is based on special shoes containing convex units called Pertupods.
The Pertupods stimulate the muscles whenever the patient is standing
or walking – even during routine activities at home, causing the brain
and the muscles to repeatedly carry out correct movements. This type
of rehabilitation, known as functional rehabilitation, is considered to be
highly effective.
Infection-preventing sheets – An original Israeli line of products
developed by Cupron Ltd., that can potentially save thousands of lives
every year: textile products containing fine copper fibers. The products,
tested in an extensive clinical trial at Reuth Medical & Rehabilitation Center,
significantly reduced infection rates in patients. Following the impressive
results, the Center has replaced all linen in its wards such as; bedding,
robes, pajamas, towels etc. with products containing copper fibers.

“I came back to Reuth to give to others what I was given here,” says
Elizabeth Lavrik of Slovakia, who was injured in a terrorist bombing and
rehabilitated at Reuth, and has now returned to us as a volunteer.
“I first came to Israel in 2002”, says Elizabeth Lavrik, her Hebrew a little
slow, but her kind blue eyes smiling. “I had a good job in Slovakia, as
an economist, but I had never travelled, or even been on a plane. So
I decided to come to Israel and work here as a caretaker for seniors.
”Four years later, on her day off at Easter, as she was walking to a
taxi station near Tel Aviv’s New Central Bus Station, a suicide bomber
exploded right next to her.
Chapter 1: I will go home a healthy woman
“I don’t remember a thing,” says Elizabeth. “I was severely wounded.
The entire right side of my body was hit. I had burns and lesions all over
my face, my hands and my body, and fractures in both legs, including
an open fracture in my right leg. I lay unconscious for ten days.” She
awoke from her coma to the sound of familiar voices: her two sons
had arrived from Slovakia to be by her side. She could barely open her
eyes, and what she saw when she did is an image she’ll never forget.
“Two pairs of blue eyes, my children’s eyes, were looking down at me,”
she recalls, “and in those eyes I saw fear. This gave me the strength
to endure everything over the next few months: the surgery, the pain,
the demanding rehabilitation. I just couldn’t bear to see that fear in my
children’s eyes again.”
Elizabeth came to us for rehabilitation following a series of operations.
“My sons went home, and I don’t have any family here,” she relates.
“And yet, at Reuth, I was never alone. Illana, my good friend, came to
visit me. One volunteer, who spoke Hungarian, practically ‘adopted’
me. And the staff always encouraged me. I would go outside in my
wheelchair and sit in the sun, and staff members and volunteers
would constantly come up to me with kind words. The words, the
encouragement, the smiles - they all helped me just as much as the
treatments.”
But there were also treatments, of course. Long months of grueling
physiotherapy. And Elizabeth worked hard. Very hard. “My goal was
to go home a healthy woman,” she says. “I wanted to get up from
the wheelchair quickly, and here I was taught how to walk again,
just like a baby. When I made my first step, the entire physiotherapy
staff cheered me on. They all said ‘Well done!’ and I was so proud.
I still remember the first time I put on shoes, and the first time I got
up and took a shower standing up! I kept thinking that people don’t
understand the significance of such things. That when we’re healthy,
we can’t comprehend how fortunate we are. I said to myself: ‘If God
helps me regain my health, I won’t write any thank-you letters to be
hung on hospital walls. I will return to Reuth and give to others all the
kindness that I received here.’”
After seven months of arduous rehabilitation, unwavering hope and
titanic efforts, Elizabeth finally attained her goal. She returned home to
Slovakia, to her children, a healthy woman.
Chapter 2: My gift to Reuth
In March of 2013 Elizabeth returned once again to Reuth Medical and
Rehabilitation Center. This time on her feet, quite fit and well, as a
volunteer. “This is my gift to Reuth,” she smiles.
The former rehab patient has now become a full-time volunteer, and
intends to stay with us for many months. She lives in the volunteers’
residence at the Center, and reports for duty in the various wards each
day. “Every morning I help patients who require nursing care eat their
breakfast. Then I work with patients out on the roof, in the therapeutic
garden, or in therapeutic recreation. I met a young girl here, severely
disabled, who never has any visitors, so I wheel her out for strolls in the
park. She can’t speak, but she claps her hands whenever she sees me.
That makes me so happy…”
And most of all, Elizabeth gives patients at Reuth the love that had
helped her so much during her own rehabilitation: “When I see someone
in a wheelchair, I go up to him and smile, ask how he’s doing, and offer
my help. When someone starts walking in physiotherapy I say ‘Well
done!’ remembering how pleased I was when the staff applauded me. I
know how important it is. Kind words are a wonderful remedy.”
And we at Reuth are delighted to have her with us. It’s so good to see
this brave woman, who came to us in utter helplessness, now walking
independently and living her own special dream. We still remember her
very well. We remember the smile and the determination she brought
to every exhausting treatment, and are so glad to embrace her today
as one of our own – a Reuth volunteer. For no one can understand
the essence and the significance of the Spirit of Reuth better than our
Elizabeth.
