Morris the mankiest monster
1
Monsters are hardly renowned for their impressive standards of personal
hygiene, but young Morris takes grossness to dizzy new heights. Whether
he’s bathing in sewage, flossing with slugs or inspecting the potatoes
growing out of his pants, Morris is thoroughly disgusting, yet oddly charming.
Many teachers (and some children) will find this book decidedly repulsive –
others will take great pleasure in reading the delectable rhyming text aloud or
poring over the illustrations, which convey an interesting mix of cuteness and
filth. One thing is guaranteed: this book will get a response! 5+

The great dog bottom swap
ISBN 9780385615112
2
Have you ever wondered why dogs sniff each others’ bottoms? Well, this
hilarious gem of a story presents one theory about why they do, and it’s
all to do with the Dogs’ Summer Ball, the most prestigious event in the
canine calendar. With impeccable rhyming text, Peter Bently tells the
story of the disaster which befell the dogs on that night and still haunts
them to this day. Mei Matsuoka’s endearing illustrations are invaluable in
telling this ridiculous tale which, though a bit ruder than adults might like,
will be sure to have children in stitches! 6+

A simple but very effective rhyming story, perfect for reading aloud. Did
anyone see the variety of animals who slithered and slumped and crept
and tripped through the window? ‘Not Katie or James or their little dog
Harry’ is the refrain, as they bake their bread and create their own chaos
in the kitchen. Lovely use of language, simple and well modulated, with
expressive illustrations. 3+

Daddy lost his head
5
A wonderfully original picture book that can be read either as a funny and
slightly surreal story or as an allegorical fable exploring the stress of a parent in
a demanding job. When a father returns home missing his head, his children
decorate a new one for him out of papier-mâché. With his new head, their
father seems on the face of it to be more helpful and accommodating, he
doesn’t snore and has become a good dancer! In the end, he returns home
with his old head, which he had left at the office. The children are pleased to
have their father’s old head back as it is full of happy memories. First published
in France, the story has the added bonus of Quentin Blake’s wonderful illustrations. 6+

increasingly occupied by amused escapees, his frustration is at fever pitch.

No matter how she stretches up to the sky, Little Chick tells Old-Auntie

would be without it. So they leave her star in the sky, where it outshines
all the other stars. Little Chick’s childish pride and disappointment and
the loving wisdom of Old-Auntie are brilliantly portrayed in these three
delightful vignettes, and Anita Jeram’s illustrations are just bursting with
life and character. A beautifully produced picture book for children of 3+.

Milo and the magical stones
41
A community of mice enjoy a harmonious and comfortable existence on their
island – except during the winter storms, when they huddle alone in their dark,
damp caves. When Milo finds a magical stone that gives off light and heat, his
friends naturally want to find stones of their own. At this point, the reader can
choose one of two endings. The top half of the book shows the friends’ lives
transformed by the light and heat the stones bring. The bottom half shows how
selfishness and greed bring about the community’s destruction. Originally
published in 1997, this interesting use of the picture book format, with the added
attraction of sparkly stones, could lead to useful discussion about environmental
and moral issues, as well as ideas for creative writing. 5+

One smart fish
ISBN 9780224083522
44
A wonderful new picture book by this award-winning and always original
writer and artist. Set during the Palaeozoic prehistoric period when there
was only sea and sea life. One smart fish (we know he is smart because
he plays chess) has an idea to explore the dry and desolate world, a
world still devoid of plant or animal life. This fish may be clever but is
premature in the evolutionary process and soon returns to the sea. The
evolutionary transformation is however slowly taking place and a million
years later fish will leave the sea and evolve into all animal life including
humans. Beautiful illustrations support this timely exploration of the theory of evolution in a fun
and non didactic way. Lots to talk about and discuss or just enjoy as a quirky story. 5+

Toby alone
88
For thirteen-year-old Toby, who is only a millimetre-and-a-half tall, any journey is
an epic adventure into a world of monsters. This fantasy world is used as the
setting for an amusing and original ecological allegory, as Toby observes our
relationship with the environment in a way only a boy his size can. With more
than a nod towards Roald Dahl, the story explores the thoughtless behaviour of
a greedy individual who is set on destroying the world for short-term profit.
Printed on sustainable paper with vegetable ink, the book’s important message
never gets in the way of a hugely enjoyable coming-of-age adventure. The
humorous and thoughtful text retains a feel for the original french and is beautifully supported by
Sarah Ardizzone’s evocative illustrations in this award-winning first half of a two-part novel. 10+

then the true agenda of the school becomes clear - to eradicate all traces of
abnormality among life on Earth, by any means necessary. The initially sweet

GORDON, John
Fen runners
92
Based in the author’s native East Anglia, this story draws its inspiration from
the legends and mythology of that unique area to produce an exciting and
menacing mystery adventure set in a bleak winter landscape. A dragon-like
monster, believed to have been killed in ancient times, is stalking the canals
and waterways of the fens. Its sinister followers, the Watchers, also prowl the
area, looking for those who threaten the monster. Friends Kit and Jenny are
drawn together by their special ability to see the sinister Watchers and to use
‘fen runners’ – magic skates. Together they embark on a dangerous journey
over the frozen waterways to confront the ancient monster. John Gordon has lost none of his
talent for evoking legend, mythology and landscape in this fantastically creepy and satisfying
story. At only 136 pages this is a very accessible read and the outstanding illustrations by

The Goffins: Lofty and Eave
ISBN 9781842996102
114
This first title, in what is clearly designed to be a series, introduces the first two
Goffins, a group of whimsical old-fashioned characters who have made their
home in George’s grandmother’s attic. Lofty and Eave are stuck in a parallel
Victorian world that re-uses all things obsolete, rather like The Borrowers. The
book is written with great wit and charm, particularly the Goffins’ speech, an
archaic form of English which is very funny and, with a little practice, reads
beautifully aloud. The main character, George, often fails to understand Goffin
talk, with hilarious results. The Goffins inhabit a unique but believable fantasy
world with a more traditional moral framework than today, which enables George to overcome
his selfishness. The text is wonderfully supported by Nick Maland’s suitably nostalgic
illustrations. 9+
