Call to help fight trade in stolen items. “Handling stolen
goods is a serious offence that carries a maximum
sentence of 14 years imprisonment but research suggests
one in four people would buy stolen items if they were offered them cheaply enough despite the fact the products may have been stolen from families or businesses in
their community”. That’s according to local police who are appealing for help to catch
“Del-boy” criminals. See the full advice from our PCSO Tracy Field on page 9.
Turn to the BIG Mag for all you local news. In this edition we are so packed with

St Nicolas Church - Thoughts from your Lay Reader.
There is no Rector at St Nicolas Church, Itchingfield
at the moment. Carol Shepherd is the Lay Reader.
Easter Eggs have been in the shops since the beginning
of the year and we grumble about being too early. The
shops have much preparation to do to get everything up
and running, and Hot cross buns seem to be in the
supermarkets all year round now.
Well in the Christian Church, we also have to prepare for
Easter before it happens. It starts with Ash Wednesday.
Some Christian Churches have a service where
believers are given the sign of the cross on their
foreheads with the ashes of the previous year’s palm
crosses. Then 40 days later it’s Easter Sunday.(not
counting Sundays) This is a tradition in the Christian
Churches and gives us a time of preparation where we
can think about what Jesus The Christ has done for us.
Carol Shepherd
Even Jesus had to prepare himself for the task ahead of
Him and He spent 40 days in the wilderness after His baptism.
As a believer and the older I’m getting, the more I realize how much He has done for
me-the sacrifice of His life. Knowing he was going to be crucified, and for what! Being
someone who had never done anyone harm and had healed many sick, diseased
ridden bodies and minds. Spoken only in love, to crowds of people about God and
how lives could be changed for the better if God’s laws were followed. God gave only
10 commandments to follow, then Jesus put them all into two new commandments‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength
and with all your mind, and love your neighbour as yourself’. If we all, every humanbeing, followed those two commandments we would be living in a perfect world. One
day it will be like that, when Jesus returns.
With love in Christ Jesus, Carol.

EASTER LILIES
Over the past few years people have liked to remember family and
friends with Lilies in the Church at Easter. If you would like to do
this, donations towards the lilies are most welcome. A list of those
in whose memory lilies are given will be displayed in the Church.
Please include names with donations.
Cheques (made payable to St. Nicolas Flower Fund) and donations
can be sent to me.

BARNS GREEN RFC - Rugby fixtures & results
The past month has seen the rugby club consolidate its' position
firmly in second place in Sussex League Two West with two walk
over games delivering us maximum points, although one loss was
incurred against the unbeaten league leaders, Pulborough.
A larger squad than in previous years, has seen us be able to accommodate a
number of injuries and we are looking forward with eager anticipation to competition
for final league places that the final third of the 2014/15 season will bring.

Advice from Tracy Field;
Police Community Support Officer.

Help fight the trade in stolen items
Handling stolen goods is a serious offence that carries a maximum sentence of 14
years imprisonment but research suggests one in four people would buy stolen items
if they were offered them cheaply enough - despite the fact the products may have
been stolen from families or businesses in their community. Burglars often break into
homes looking for specific brands of goods that they know they can sell quickly and
easily to people willing to buy them without asking questions about where they came
from.
Detective Chief Inspector Paul Betts said: "There is a clear link between
burglaries and the second hand goods market but too many people seem to think that
Del Boy-style criminals are just lovable rogues. The fact is that these offenders make
their living by selling the stolen possessions of others. They are not victimless or
blameless - they are part of a problem that causes real pain to people.
"We are appealing to the public to think when they are offered items that seem to
be a great deal. If the price is too good to be true the items are probably stolen - so
don't buy them. You do not have to know that something is stolen to commit an
offence if you buy it - just believing that it could be stolen is enough.
"If you are found with a stolen item you could be arrested and prosecuted. It is
also likely that we will seize the item from you and you will lose not only the money
you have paid but the item as well, so it will no longer seem such a good deal.

In March 1915, the British Army in Flanders launched its first organised attack of the
year on the German front line at Neuve Chapelle. Whilst the British did break into the
German lines they were unable to break through and make any real progress.
As was so often the case with war news in 1915, the press reports make Neuve
Chapelle sound like a resounding triumph, but what was never directly reported was
the cost in human terms of these military “successes” - in this battle this was over
11,600 men killed, wounded or missing for no real gain.
One of the casualties of Neuve Chappelle was Captain Gordon Tottenham, one of the
men listed on our War Memorial. His mother Mrs Helen Tottenham had lived in Trout
Lane for several years and his death was extensively reported in the West Sussex
County Times.
Captain Gordon Tottenham
Captain Tottenham was a career soldier and at the outbreak of war was serving in
India. His regiment was despatched to France and on arrival Capt Tottenham spent
several months working on communications on the French coast. This gave his
mother the opportunity to travel to France and see her son, probably for the first time
in several years. Sadly it was also to be the last.
On 9th March 1915 Capt Tottenham travelled to Neuve Chappelle to join his new
command with the King George V’s Own Bengal Sappers and Miners, where he
served throughout the battle of Neuve Chappelle. On the 29th March he led a 100
strong working party and worked in the trenches, probably repairing shell damaged
trench walls and dugouts. Whilst moving about in the trench positions, Captain
Tottenham was shot by a German sniper. He died the next day.
Charles Gordon Loftus Tottenham was 26 years old. He is buried in Cabaret Rouge
British Cemetery.

1ST BARNS GREEN AND ITCHINGFIELD
RAINBOWS AND BROWNIES
This term alone our Brownies have earned their Cook badge and finished their art
badge, and both badges were ones they requested to do. The Brownies went
swimming in Billingshurst and four girls took their Promise and were enrolled in the
water. Our focus is fun and to try make events as memorable as possible.
Whilst all this was happening, the Rainbows have completed their Healthy Living
Badge. They walked to the village shop and bought fruit and then they got to smash a
Crunchie bar to understand how our bones are made. A Onesie night learning about
the importance of sleep to keep us healthy, combined with making a fishing game,
streamers to dance with and glittery hair clips was one night alone. They have made
pizza, made sheep for Chinese New Year, discussed water conservation, learnt a new
game of animal yoga and plenty of new “healthy living’ “songs.
All the girls are practicing for a show they are performing. They are making
tickets, props to accompany songs and programme covers, rehearsing songs, poems
and much more. They are choosing what they want to do and everyone is involved.
Who knows, they maybe future BG Players.
A huge thank you to the residents, who don’t have children at our units, but have
commented on how much they enjoy reading our article each month, that’s great as
we enjoy sharing it. This has led us to make a slight change to our BIGMAG article; to
help the girls work towards their Writers badge and they will be given the opportunity
to write part of our monthly article. Hopefully, you will enjoy reading it!
Reasons to get involved with the Rainbows and Brownies units in our village
It is a fun and vibrant place to be
The children enjoy a huge variety of activities
The unit has grown over the last year and we need extra to help to maintain this
We want to involve the girls in the local community as much as possible and can
only do this with your support
You can simply turn up on the night and enjoy it, or if you have a bit more time,
help plan some of our sessions.
Sometimes the girls bring delicious cakes to share on their birthdays!
Any time you give is much appreciated, and will ensure Rainbows and Brownies
future in our village.
BROWNIES WRITERS BADGE
This term I have learnt to be safe in the kitchen, hold knifes properly and to use
kitchen scissors. Also, for my cooking badge I had to make toast with butter and jam. I
also had to make cups of tea for the leaders and make and decorate cakes. Finally,
we had to make a salad and arrange it in an appetising way. All the Brownies have
done this, which means 29 of us have passed our Cook badge. Last week, we went
swimming at Billingshurst and we splashed around and we jumped in {as a unit}. The
funniest bit was all the leaders jumping in and made the biggest SPLASH EVER!!! We
have finished our Art badge too. I did a drawing of my dog as my final assessed piece.
We really have been very busy this term.
We are very busy preparing for a show, we are singing, telling poems, acting,
tongue twisters, dancing and showing some of the badge work we have been doing.
It’s great fun. This is my first term being a Sixer too and I am really enjoying it.

It’s A Date Then!
Itchingfield Parish calendar.
There is a plan to produce an Itchingfield Parish Calendar
for 2016 incorporating photographs of local subjects taken
by local people. All of the profit from the sales of these
calendars will be fed back into the parish community clubs
and societies. We would look for local sponsors for each month to subsidise artwork
and printing costs. Photographers and sponsors will be acknowledged on each page.
The aim of this article is to get you all to look out old photographs or take new
photographs to be considered for the calendar. Remember, the photographs must be
of something local to the Itchingfield Parish. A small committee would chose the final
twelve photographs.
It is planned to release the calendar in September 2015. In the April issue of the
BIG Mag we will give more details relating to the format, production and sales of the
calendars.

VILLAGE HALL NEWS
The Village Hall has had a very busy year with a wide variety
of local groups using the hall, catering for all ages. The WW1
commemoration in November was well supported, and there
will be further exhibitions to come, Mary Hallett and Merv
Hughes have worked extremely hard in their research and
have much more material to share. Most recently the Barns Green Players staged a
very successful production of Jack and the Beanstalk with the highest ticket sales
ever! Playgroup are holding a Race Night in March to raise much needed extra funds
and we will have a slide show with some amazing photography of India in April.
All of these groups, including the Hall itself, rely on your support. Whether it is as a
volunteer to help, being a committee member, making a donation or supporting an
event. So much hard work goes on behind the scenes and many groups are always
looking for extra assistance. So if you are interested in joining a group, or
volunteering as a helper check out the contact details in the BIG Mag and get in
contact! It really is very rewarding putting something back into the community.
Some of you may have noticed that we are no longer running Film Nights. Over the
last year we struggled to break even and therefore took the decision to discontinue
with these nights in their present form. In the past we had to use a business who
brought the equipment with them and provided the films. This meant that we had to
commit to a minimum number of films and we were limited by the choice of films and
the night when they could be shown. We now have our own equipment which will
allow us to screen films and we have been investigating renting films ourselves. This
will allow us to choose a more popular night, we hope to trial this later in the year.

Update from your Parish Council
I thought that I would do a winter update giving details of some of the issues that have
been occupying the Parish Council over the past few months. As always we have
been busy with a number of projects aimed at improving life in our community. One of
our main focusses has been the issue of flooding and improving the drains and
ditches in and around Barns Green. With projects like this we get great support from
our County Councillor, Amanda Jupp and major new drains have now been installed
at the crossroads in the heart of the village and at the “triangle” where the road out of
Barns Green and Itchingfield joins the Five Oaks Road. These have considerably
improved the situation and reduced the risk of flooding. We have also been
concentrating on getting more ditches dug out on a regular basis to keep water off the
roads. The more that this is done the less damage occurs to the tarmac which of
course means fewer potholes.
Another major project we are working on is getting new roadside gates and signs at
each entrance to the village. These will smarten up the appearance of the village and
hopefully reduce speeding. We will be getting these installed in the next few weeks.
The work on the new school and houses is moving on fast and I believe in May the
first new residents will move into Ashmiles. Following a suggestion from the floor at
the Annual Village Meeting, the Parish Council has produced a welcome book for all
new residents which has information on Barns Green and all its facilities as well as
details of all the clubs, societies and sports teams in the village. The committee
looking after the Barns Green Development Fund are working closely with different
groups in the village and there is an update on this elsewhere in this issue of the
BigMag.
There are lots of other initiatives taking place, as well as our ongoing work covering
things like planning applications, weather and road gritting, footpaths and bridleways,
trees and hedge and verge cutting, crime, litter etc. One of the new areas we are
currently looking at with our two District Councillors, Patricia Youtan and Stuart Ritchie
is the car parking situation at Christ’s Hospital Station. Those of you who use the car
park will know that it is generally filling up earlier in the morning making it harder to
find a parking space and we are endeavouring to get something done to help this
situation. We are also looking to upgrade the Parish Council website and if anyone
has any thoughts or suggestions for this or indeed anything else which might affect
you, please do get in touch with us.
Penny Simpson, Chairman, Itchingfield Parish Council

Barns Green Development Fund
It has been some time since we reported on the Barns Green Development Fund so
we thought it would be helpful to let everyone know how things were progressing.
During the discussions with the County Council and Berkeley Homes about the new
school and housing development in the village, the Parish Council was responsible
for securing additional funds (£350,000) which was to be used for specific capital
projects designed to improve the facilities for the local community.
The projects for which funding has been applied are generally major building
programmes which are complicated and require detailed planning and in some cases
involve planning applications. This all takes time and naturally some of the projects
are moving forward quicker than others. There are 4 projects which are currently
moving forward – the proposed extension to the Village Hall, the proposed new
kitchen and toilet facilities at St Nicolas Church, the proposed development of the
Social Club’s changing room facilities and the Village Car Park proposal for the
Jubilee Field. We are still having discussions with the Tennis and Rugby clubs about
improved facilities and we are also still looking at any potential transport options for
the Farm Close residents.
As things stand money has been allocated to enable plans to be drawn up and
planning applications to be submitted for the Village Hall extension, the new Village
Car Park and the improvements to the Social Club changing rooms. The Church has
had its initial planning application for new catering and toilet facilities outside the
church turned down so new proposals are being submitted for the new facilities to be
located inside the church. Of course once planning permissions are sought for all
projects plans will become available for everyone to see.
There is additional money available (over and above the £350,000) for some of these
projects in the form of S106 money from the Council. However, there are
complications regarding the timing for applying for this money which only becomes
available when a certain proportion of the new houses are occupied so this is also
holding up some projects.
In summary, things are moving forward and plans beginning to take shape. There is
certainly great enthusiasm and willingness from all the parties involved and the many
individuals who are all working in their spare time to help improve and develop these
facilities which will in time benefit many people in the village.
Update from Berkeley Homes. The Ashmiles.
All external works to Plots Facing on to Two Mile Ash road to be
completed by Middle of March. Zone 3 Brickwork nearing completion with final roofs being Lifted Beginning of March. No Works to
be carried out on two Mile Ash Road in front of the main Housing
site until final tarmac repairs at the end of the year. Plots Taking
