It reminds us of what lies at the heart of our community. The Eucharist sets us apart as a Christian Community, it is the source and summit of our lives and shapes the community we are. In the Eucharist we celebrate God’s love for us through Christ’s life, death and Resurrection. At all stages of Christ’s earthly journey, Mary is there present supporting her son. The Feast of the Assumption is about Mary’s death, the tradition that her body did not decay but that she was raised up, body and soul, into heaven. Mary, mother of Jesus, can so often be depicted, or portrayed in our faith through Art and tradition as meek and mild, passive and subservient. Yet this isn’t the reality we see in the many stories that talk about Mary in the New Testament, such as, the Annunciation, the Visitation Nativity, Flight to Egypt, wedding at Canna, at the foot of the Cross and Pentecost we see a strong and noble women who was always open to the will of God. St Eugene de Mazenod, the Patron Saint of this College and Founder of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate had a particular devotion to Mary. It was on the 15th August, 1826, during the placement of a new statue of Mary in the Chapel, after the Feast Day Mass, St Eugene had a spiritual experience, feeling a great sense of peace and calm in the difficult decision he had made in the foundation of the Congregation. At first we were known as Missionaries of Provence followed by Missionaries of St Charles and then finally Eugene choose the name Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Through this feast we are given the opportunity to reflect on the gift of Motherhood and give thanks for all that our mothers have done for us. We offered at the Mass a special prayer for all of our mothers at the Eucharist on Monday. Last Friday night 120 Year 10 Students, along with the Year 11 Leaders and over 20 Teachers participated in a Winter Sleep Out at Mazenod College. The evening commenced with a Mass followed by the Guest Speaker who was from one of the local St Vincent De Paul Branches. We were also privileged to have one of the regular visitors to the Rosie’s Van come along to talk to everyone on the night. He spoke in depth about his life on the streets which he has experienced over the last 14 years. The night concluded with a movie and everyone being served with hot chocolate served out of the Rosies Van on their return from serving those on the streets earlier in the evening. Obviously this was most welcomed by the students as they experienced sleeping out in the cold and wet night in the Year 7 area. I would like to congratulate all of the young men who participated in this wonderful event, and to the staff who made it possible. It is my hope that this will be an annual event in the school calendar. On Wednesday afternoon the Founder’s Ensemble travelled to Federation Square to take part in the Victorian School Music Festival. This year the festival was held at the Deakin Edge, on the banks of the Yarra. Our Senior Concert Band performed three pieces, conducted by Mr Mears and Mr Leutchford. The performance was followed by a workshop with the adjudicators. At the conclusion of the performance Mazenod was awarded a Gold Award. This is the first time any Mazenod College ensemble has received this accolade. This year we have entered 6 ensembles in the festival. Earlier this Term the Symphonic Wind Band received a Silver Award in their section. Next week it will be the turn of our Swing and Stage Bands. All the ensembles will be playing their pieces at the Annual Music Gala on Wednesday, 7th September 2016. The Mazenod Musical Gala is always a great night on the College Calendar showcasing our talented amazing Musicians. If you would like to attend, please book a ticket through this link. After experiencing the musical talent at Mazenod you might be looking for a night of quirks and laughs at this years’ Performing Arts Festival. The night will showcase our talented performing arts students with performances of selected drama pieces they have been working on throughout the year. The date for this is Thursday 15th September, commencing at 7 pm in the Mazenod College, Founders’ Complex. For your ticket please book through this link. On Wednesday evening our Year 9 Debating Team comprising of Sam Warner, Jordan Bassilious, Ashley Cain and Matthew Yong won their first Finals Debate in the Debating Association of Victoria High School Competition. To reach this point the boys needed to finish at the top of the ladder in the Glen Waverley Region. We wish them all the best as they progress to the final stages of this competition which will be held in the coming weeks. Our four Junior Year 7 and Year 8 Teams are also congratulated for winning each of their respective debates on Tuesday night which were held at Brentwood College. Congratulations to everyone involved with our Debating Teams. On the Volleyball court the Mazenod Volleyball Club made the State League Grand Final in a division higher than last year. The Team competing on the weekend boasts 6 Old Boys, and 3 current students: Luke Kustreba (Yr 10), Zach Gubbels (Yr 11) Lucas Gentile (Yr 10). There will also be 5 Old Boys in the opposition team playing for Monash, which will make for a great game. Everyone is most welcome to attend the Grand Final game which is scheduled for 12:00 pm on Saturday on Court 1 at Dandenong Stadium, there is a $2.70 door charge to enter the stadium. Our ACC Chess Teams had a successful Thursday afternoon, with three Teams all entered in the Division 1 draw: Mazenod placed 1, 2, 3. All of the other ACC Teams were below us in Division 1 or in Division 2. With our Year 7and 8 Teams coming third overall behind our other two teams we would seem well placed against the rest of the ACC for the next 6 years with Thursdays results, 1st Mazenod Years 11 and 12 Team, 2nd Mazenod Years 9 and 10 Team, 3rd Mazenod Years 7 and 8 Team, 4th Parade Open Team and 5th Salesian Open Team. God Bless Fr Christian Fini OMI Rector In our continuing endeavours to enhance our communication with our families, our ongoing Learning Management System (LMS) development has taken a further step in Term 3 with the implementation of student assessment results online. During Term 2 these were available to students, and now these online results can viewed by Parents through the Parent Portal of our LMS. We have recently upgraded our Parent Portal with new and enhanced features. We hope this significantly improves our ongoing and regular communication with you. On the Parent Portal available through the College Learning Management System you will find: • Three calendars viewable by day, week and month. The College Calendar The ACC Sport Calendar The Student Assessment Calendar showing all exam periods and the Year 12 SAC program. • Links to the Subject Selection Handbooks, Newsletters, Annual Reports, Mazenod careers website and the Mazenod College Library website • A “Current Assessment” tab that shows all assessments planned in your sons classes this semester. This will also show results for these tasks in real time as they are marked and released. • A “Results” tab that shows previous assessment results, beginning with Semester 1 this year, sorted by subject and semester • A “Student Reports” tab that allows you to download in PDF format all previous reports for your son(s). As results are released on the portal by staff you will receive a generic email notification that a new result is available. This is a courtesy notification allowing you to know when to login to the Portal to see these results. You do not need to reply to this email or contact your sons teachers when this notification comes. You will receive notifications for all of your sons assessment tasks and exams. Also available through the Parent Portal is the link to the Parent Teacher Online (PTO) booking facility. This is now open and bookings are filling fast. Bookings will close at just after midnight on the day of the interviews. The dates and times for this semester’s parent teacher interviews are listed to the right and all interviews are 5 minutes in duration. When booking, it is advisable to book interviews for every second five minute slot allowing for movement in between interviews. The quieter time when more spaces are available is on the Wednesday afternoon. The focus of these mid-unit interviews is on feedback and follow up regarding issues that may have arisen in early second semester study, or in the mid-year reports. They provide an opportunity for: • our VCE students and their parents to focus on the all-important last few months of study, • for teachers to discuss with parents any major difficulties that students may be experiencing, • for parents to discuss any concerns they may have, and • for Years 9, 10 and 11 students to discuss issues regarding subject selections for next year. Students in Years 8-11 are all completing their subject selections for 2017 via the Learning Management System subject selection module. Our students are working through a structured process that encourages them to think deeply and research widely regarding their future options. The parent teacher interviews provide an opportunity for final clarification and discussion with teachers regarding these subject choices. All choices are due in by next Friday the 26th August. SPORT OBLATE CRICKET December is fast approaching and the Oblate Cricket Carnival will be in Melbourne. A meeting was held this week with students to organise our training sessions which will take place later in the Term at the Indoor Cricket Centre at Sandown. After finishing Second last year, the team is very determined to win on home soil. The carnival starts on Monday, 5th December and runs until Thursday 8th December. We welcome our brother College, Iona and Mazenod WA, and I look forward to the support of the parent body in helping us billet these students for the week. Billeting students is a wonderful experience and a great way for your son to share some time with like-minded students from our brother Colleges. A meeting for parents will be held closer to December. MAZENOD OLD COLLEGIANS CRICKET CLUB The Old Collegians Cricket Club will run a number of junior teams over the coming Summer with some great opportunities to develop your Cricket skills on turf as well as synthetic. The club is going to run 2 x U/12 teams, U/14 Friday or Saturday morning team, U/15 Sunday turf team, U/16 Saturday morning team and a U/17 Sunday turf team. The club is holding its registration and first training day on Sunday the 21st of August at the College from 9am -11am. RETURN PLEASE - MAZENOD ACC JUMPERS AND TOPS I am asking for your urgent help here. Every year we are increasingly pursuing students to return Mazenod sporting jumpers and singlets. All these tops come at great expense to the College from your fees and it is becoming frustrating the amount of time lost following up tops. The college decided years ago to purchase team sets to offset the cost for parents who were then asked to purchase sporting tops. This has in most times worked well where students have been allocated a top for the season and they are returned washed and ready for the following year. It appears students now are souveniring the tops or think it is their right to keep hold of them. Every top that is not returned unfortunately means the coast goes onto everyone’s fee’s to replace. Could I please ask that you and your son look through his clean room and return ASAP any tops that belong to the College? A reminder to students and parents that all jumpers and singlets are required back the College ASAP. If they can be washed and cleaned and returned to Mr Campbell in the Oblate Hall store room so names can be ticked off. We thank you for your cooperation on this matter. 22-Aug Year 8 Div 1 Table Tennis Whitefriars Whitefriars College 4:00 pm 23-Aug Year 10 Semi Basketball A’s v Sim/ B’s v DLS Dandenong 4:30 pm 23-Aug Year 10 Semi Hockey Season Complete 23-Aug Year 10-Semi Table Tennis St Beranrd’s MSAC Tables 1-10 4:30 pm 23-Aug Year 9 H-1pm start St Bernard's St Bernard's Hockey 4:00 pm 23-Aug Year 9 Basketball St Bernard's St Bernards College 4:30 pm 23-Aug Year 9 Table Tennis St Bernard's St Bernard's College O'Brien Hall 4:30 pm Dandenong 4:30 pm 24-Aug SeniorSemi B-2:30pm Whitefriars 24-Aug Senior Semi Hockey Season complete 24-Aug Senior Semi Table Tennis St Bernard’s MSAC Tables 1-10 4:30 pm 25-Aug Year 7 Hockey Salesian Monash Uni 3:10 pm 25-Aug Year 7 Div 1 Basketball Salesian Mazenod (OBH) 25-Aug Year 7 Div 1 Table Tennis Salesian Mazenod 25-Aug Year 7 Div 2 Basketball St Bernard's Mazenod (PRO) 25-Aug Year 7 Div 2 Table Tennis St Bernard's Mazenod 25-Aug Year 8 Div 2 Basketball Parade Parade College 4:30 pm 25-Aug Year 8 Div 2 Table Tennis Parade Parade College 4:30 pm ACC RESULTS ROUND 6 ACC RESULTS- WK 3 RESULT SNR BASKETBALL vs St Bernard’s Maz A 40 lost SBE 59, Maz B 33 lost SBE 38 SNR TABLE TENNIS Maz 11/51 def SBE SNR HOCKEY Maz 2 def SBE 1 YR 10 HOCKEY vs DLS Maz 0 lost DLS 1 YR 10 BASKETBALL Maz A 35 lost DLS 48, Maz B 38 def DLS 28 YR 10 TABLE TENNIS Maz 11/51 def SBE 4/24 YR 9 HOCKEY vs DLS Maz 4 lost DLS 9 YR 9 BASKETBALL Maz A 59 def DLS 27 , Maz B 38 def DLS 37 YR 9 TABLE TENNIS Maz 12/55 def DLS 3/20 YR 8 A BASKETBALL vs St Bede’s Maz A 29 def STBM 26, Maz B 34 lost STBM 43 YR 8 A TABLE TENNIS Maz 15/64 def STBM 0/11 YR 8 A HOCKEY Maz 2 def StBM 0 ACC SWIMMING TRAINING A reminder that swim training is under way at Monash University heated pool every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning.
