It is with Jesus joy that I greet you in
the name of the Father, the Son, and the
Holy Ghost. Welcome to the convening
of the 102nd Hampton University Ministers’ Conference and the 82nd
Choir Directors’ and Organists’ Guild Workshop. As always, it is my
honor, pleasure and privilege to serve the Body of Christ, the Kingdom of
God, and the great ecclesial community of preachers, psalmists, ministers
and musicians for such a time as this.
Thank you for your continued support and attendance. The University
is preparing for your arrival, and it will be wonderful to welcome you,
once again, to our Home-by-the-Sea! We look forward to having you
on campus and opening the doors of hospitality and gratitude for your
support through the years. Thank you to each of you!
Our world needs strong, God-confident prophetic voices now more than
ever. Our Lord has called us, and the world needs us to bring “Light into
dark places” (Proverbs 4:19). On behalf of Hampton University President,
Dr. William R. Harvey, the administration, faculty, staff, and the officers
of the HUMC, we pray that the Lord will bless you and keep you. We

College students majoring in music and serving in a leadership role in
church worship, we want you! The 2016 Music Academy is seeking a few
good men and women to participate in the 2016 Church Music Academy
as a part of the Hampton University Ministers’ Conference Choir Directors’
and Organists’ Guild Workshop. The deadline for application submission
is: April 1, 2016. The conference provides registration, room and board, a
music pack and an Academy stipend.

2016 HUMC Main Stage Presenters
BISHOP RUDOLPH W. MCKISSICK, JR. is Senior Pastor of the
Bethel Church, located in Jacksonville, Florida. McKissick returned to Bethel
in 1995 to share leadership with his father, and has since succeeded him as the
sole Senior Pastor of the church. Bethel is the oldest existing Baptist church in the
state of Florida, founded in 1838, and yet remains a thriving, vibrant and growing
congregation. Bishop McKissick is a powerful messenger of God who has established
himself nationally as an outstanding preacher, teacher, theologian and academician.
His preaching prowess has afforded him many national platforms and accolades.
McKissick has served as a professor at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio in the capacity
of doctoral mentor, where students have been selected to sit in a learning cohort under his academic
mentorship as they work towards their earned Doctor of Ministry degree. Bishop McKissick, Jr. holds a
Bachelor’s Degree from Jacksonville University with a double major in the field of music: one in Opera
and the other in Sacred Church Music, with a minor in pipe organ performance. He holds the Master of
Divinity Degree from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Religion at Virginia Union University, and the
Doctor of Ministry Degree from the United Theological Seminary. Bishop McKissick has been awarded
the honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from both Bethune Cookman University as well as Virginia Union
University. In June of 2008, he was consecrated and elevated into the high office of Bishop in the Lord’s
church by Bishop Paul S. Morton. Bishop McKissick, Jr. serves on various boards, which include being
a board member of the National Action Network, founded by Rev. Al Sharpton and the Advisory Board of
the College of Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance at Florida State University. Bishop McKissick is the author
of several books as well as an accomplished musician with several national, critically acclaimed music
projects, including “The Recovery”, which debuted at number two on the national billboard charts. In July
of 2010, McKissick’s book, “God’s Got My Back” reached number one on the Independent Publishers
Book chart. He is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., as well as Sigma Pi Phi Boule (pronounced
BOO-LAY). He is married to the former Kimberly Joy Nichols and they are the proud parents of three
beautiful children; Jocelyn, Janai (pronounced JANAY) and Joshua.
REVEREND DR. JAMAL-HARRISON BRYANT is the pastor and
founder of The Empowerment Temple in Baltimore, Maryland. The inaugural service
was held on Easter Sunday, April 22, 2000 and since that time; God has directed the
path of over 6,000 members to Empowerment Temple, the fastest growing church in
the AME denomination. After nearly four years of worshipping in several locations, on
February 15, 2004, the Empowerment Temple congregation triumphantly marched
into its new 2,000 seat sanctuary located in Baltimore City. Dr. Bryant received
a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and International Studies from
Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He completed his graduate work at Duke University in Durham,
North Carolina where he earned a Master of Divinity degree. Pastor Bryant recently received his Doctor of
Theology degree from Oxford University in Great Britain. Dr. Bryant served as the director of the NAACP’s
youth and college division making him responsible for over 650 youth councils and college chapters,
representing over 68,000 young people in the United States, Germany, and Japan. Dr. Bryant is a pastor
with a global mission, which is to Empower the World through the Word. His preaching and teaching
focuses on empowering believers spiritually, developing them educationally, exposing them culturally,
activating them politically and strengthening them economically. Dr. Bryant is the father of five beautiful
daughters, and resides in his hometown, Baltimore, Maryland.

REVEREND DR. CAROLYN ANN KNIGHT was born and raised in
Denver, Colorado. She received the Bachelor of Arts degree from Bishop College
in Dallas, Texas with a major concentration in English, philosophy, and religion. Her
theological training began at Colgate Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, NY;
she later transferred to Union Theological Seminary in New York City where she was
awarded the Master of Divinity and Master of Sacred Theology degrees respectively.
Rev. Knight holds the Doctor of Ministry degree from the United Theological Seminary
in Dayton, Ohio. Under the tutelage and influence of many treasured and prolific
preachers throughout the country, Dr. Knight developed a love for preaching and the pulpit. She preached
her trial sermon and was licensed for the gospel ministry at the Mount Gilead Baptist Church in Denver,
Colorado under the leadership of The Reverend Acen L. Phillips. Dr. Knight has served in the pastoral
ministry in pulpits in Denver, Colorado; Dallas, Texas; Rochester, and Harlem, New York. She is the
founder and president of “CAN DO!” Ministries; a progressive, preventive youth advocacy ministry that is
dedicated to the cultural, social, intellectual, and spiritual well-being of youth and young adults. Dr. Knight
serves on numerous boards and committees being cited a sui generis, a one-of-a-kind preaching voice for
this generation. Dr. Knight is a proud Golden Life member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The singular
theme of her message and ministry is a better quality life for the poor and oppressed, particularly woman
and children.
REVEREND DR. JAMES HENRY HARRIS of Southern Chesterfield
County, Virginia was named Virginia Union University’s Most Outstanding Professor
in 2008 and was nominated by the President of the University for the State Council of
Higher Education of Virginia’s Outstanding Professor. In 2006, he served as President
of the Academy of Homiletics and in 2007 he served as founder and president of the
Urban Coalition for Social Change. In 1996 he was the first African American to be
awarded the Henry Luce III Fellowship in Theology by the Association of Theological
Schools (ATS) and named a Crossroads Scholar in Religion and Public Policy. He
holds Masters Degrees in Humanities (Philosophy), Theology and English Literature, and the PhD degree
in Social Science with an emphasis in Urban Studies and the Doctor of Ministry degree in Preaching and
African American Church Studies from United Theological Seminary as a Samuel DeWitt Proctor Fellow.
He is the author of seven books including Pastoral Theology (Fortress Press, 1991), Preaching Liberation
(Fortress Press, 1996) and The Word Made Plain (Fortress Press, 2004). For the past 20 years, he
has served as the Senior Minister the Second Baptist Church both in Richmond, Virginia. He serves as
advisor and consultant to churches and other non-profit organizations throughout the United States. He is
married to Demetrius Bright of Norfolk and they are the parents of two sons, James Corey and Cameron
Christopher.
BISHOP VASHTI MURPHY MCKENZIE serves as the 117th elected
consecrated bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. Her historic
election in the year 2000 represents the first time in the over 200-year history of
the AME Church, a woman had obtained the level of Episcopal office. The firsts
continue as she served as the President of the Council of Bishops, Chair of the
General Conference Commission and was the Host Bishop for the 49th Session of
the General Conference of the AME Church in June 2012 with more than 30,000
attendees. Currently, she is honored to serves as the president prelate of the
10th Episcopal District, which the entire state of Texas. Bishop McKenzie was appointed by President

Barack Obama to serve on the inaugural President’s Advisory Council of White House Faith-Based and
Neighborhood Partnerships. Bishop McKenzie has authored five books all of which highlight her strong
passion for leadership and professional growth for women. Her most recent book, Those Sisters Can
Preach! was released in 2013 and it includes 22 sermons as pearls of wisdom from nationally known
preachers who happen to be women. Bishop McKenzie, well known as an electrifying preacher, has been
honored for her leadership, community service, and outstanding achievements by a number of diverse
civic, educational, business, and governmental organizations and leaders. Bishop McKenzie is humbled
and grateful to God for the many opportunities and blessings afforded her as she strives to serve with
excellence in the Kingdom of God.
REVEREND SHELETA FOMBY is a native of the Washington DC
Metropolitan area and reared in Prince George’s County Maryland. Having
acknowledged her call to ministry in November 2002, Rev. Fomby was licensed to
preach that same year. She is thankful to live out this calling in the capacity of the
Director of Church Life at the Reid Temple AME Church, Inc. (North Location) and
as the Minister to Women. Rev. Fomby holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from
the University of Maryland (UMUC) and a Master of Divinity degree from Wesley
Theological Seminary. She is currently participating in continuing education studies
at the Duke Divinity Faith and Leadership Institute. Rev. Fomby has been privileged to proclaim the
gospel of Jesus Christ on various national platforms. Her sermons have been published in The African
American Pulpit Journal. A gifted preacher and teacher, Rev. Fomby’s life assignment is to advance God’s
Kingdom agenda in the earth through servant leadership that inspires and empowers people to take the
next faithful step. Her ministry is richly empowered by the Holy Spirit as evidenced by her enlightened
and insightful expression of God’s holy word. She endeavors to always do ministry with integrity and
authenticity. God has worked miraculously in her life and to him she gives all honor, praise and glory. Rev.
Fomby is encouraged daily by Philippians 1:6, “…being confident of this very thing that He who has begun
a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.”
BISHOP CHARLES E. BLAKE, SR. is the senior pastor of one of the
largest churches in the Western United States—West Angeles Church of God in
Christ, with a membership of over 25,000. Bishop Blake was unanimously elected as
the seventh in succession Presiding Bishop by the General Assembly of the Church
of God in Christ, Incorporated, on November 12, 2007. He is recognized as one of
the greatest preachers of this generation with a message that ministers to the whole
person while at the same time uniting people of various racial and ethnic backgrounds.
In April of 2009, Bishop Blake received an invitation from President Barack Obama to
serve on a 25-person White House Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. This
one year appointment stands as a testament to Bishop Blake’s overwhelming passion for the community
and his desire to unite all people for the common good. Among many other awards and accolades, Bishop
Blake was awarded the Harvard Foundation Humanitarian Medal for his work with Save Africa’s Children
and its mission to support orphanages throughout the continent of Africa in 2003. Having founded, chaired,
co-chaired, and served as a board member for a number of interdenominational coalitions of religious
leaders and pastors across the country, Bishop Blake’s most treasured accomplishments are those of a
devoted husband to his lovely wife, Lady Mae Lawrence Blake, and a loving father and grandfather to their
three children and eight grandchildren.
