on holiday tradition, gratitude
Christmas Parade to
be held December 14

Area residents are invited to experience the sights and
sounds of the holiday season at the Wake Forest Christmas
Parade on Saturday, Dec. 14. Sponsored by PowerSecure
and presented by Wake Forest Downtown, Inc., the parade
gets underway at 1 p.m.
This year’s procession will feature well over 100 colorful
floats and entries from local businesses, churches, schools
and civic groups, as well as several high school marching
bands and – of course - Santa Claus.
A group of local Purple Heart recipients, along with several area World War II veterans, will serve as the parade’s
grand marshals.
The procession will begin at the intersection of Elm Avenue and South White Street and continue north along South
White Street before turning east onto Wait Avenue. It will
then turn south onto South Brooks Street and continue until
ending at the Elm Avenue intersection.
Area motorists are advised that East Holding Avenue,
from South Main Street to South Franklin Street, and South
White Street, from East Holding Avenue to Elm Avenue,
will be closed at 10 a.m.
In addition, South White Street, from Elm Avenue to East
Roosevelt Avenue; Wait Avenue, from South White Street
to South Brooks Street; and South Brooks Street, from Wait
Avenue to Elm Avenue, will be closed to motorists at noon.

This year in discussing holiday traditions and sentiments
with the people of our community, I was fortunate to learn
so much about what traditions mean to different people in the
Rolesville and Wake Forest area. To some, holiday traditions
are about God. For others they revolve around family and
friends. And food is often a uniting factor. I can really relate
to that.
I am half Italian and half German. To honor our German
heritage, my mother, grandmother and I bake traditional stollen Christmas breads every year to give away to friends and
family and to eat on Christmas morning.
To honor my father’s Italian heritage, my mom prepares her
own riff on the traditional Italian Christmas Eve Feast of the
Seven Fishes. We eat shrimp, calamari and stuffed squid and,
of course, pasta.
It isn’t always pretty; there is usually some open-mouth
chewing and a lot of yelling. But it’s the only time a year that
my crazy, loud, beautiful family gets together under the same
roof. There is music, wine, soft candle glow and good conversation. Those are my holiday traditions.
I am so lucky that my friends and neighbors shared with
me and taught me about their holiday traditions and feelings
as we get closer to this holiday season. Here are some of my
favorites, from the funny and sweet, to the profound:

“Our family has done Cookie Day every year a week or
two before Christmas for as long as I can remember. We all
get together and decorate hundreds of sugar and gingerbread
cookies.”

(Of her Greek heritage) “In Greek,
merry/happy Christmas is ‘Kala Christougenna!’ The main Christmas meal is often
lamb roasted in an oven or cooked over
an open pit. Going to the midnight mass
is very important and special. People go
home after the service and end their advent fast.
“Greek people also celebrate the Epiphany on January 6th.
This celebrates Jesus’s baptism. It is also known as the ‘Blessings of the Water.’ We (Greek people) are (the ones you might
see) diving into frigid waters in the middle of winter to retrieve
a cross that was blessed by a priest, and then thrown into the
waters. The one who finds it (is believed to be blessed with)
much luck during the year. As this holiday season approaches
I want to celebrate and honor my family for instilling and continuing those yearly and wonderful traditions, (as well as) my
friends who have become my family, and dove into plenty of
waters for me! (I am also very thankful for) my clients (at the
Main Squeeze), who continue to love and support me, (as well
as) my new clients I’ve met in Wake Forest.”

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas;
toys in ev’ry store. But the prettiest sight to
see is the holly that will be on your own front
door.
With the holidays fast approaching,
everyone is scampering around to find that
perfect gift for Mom, Dad, the kids and the
grandparents. But don’t forget Fido. He is
a very important member of the family. No
matter how many socks he’s chewed, meals
he’s stolen or floors he’s wet, he still loves
you. And you know that you still love him.
Now, just what special gift will he be
happy to receive? Remember, Fido isn’t
materialistic. So bigger or more expensive
is not always better. Dog toys should be
fun, durable, and most of all, safe. However,
those factors are completely dependent upon
your dog’s size, activity level, and personal
preference.
You should also consider the environment
in which your dog spends his time. By
considering the following, you should be able
to make a wise decision in choosing among
the vast treats, gifts and pet accessories for the
holidays.
All dog toys should be appropriate for
your dog’s current size. For example, balls
should be large enough to carry, but not too
small. Balls and other toys that are too small
can easily be swallowed or become lodged
in your dog’s mouth or throat. Avoid or alter
any toys that aren’t “dog-proof” by removing
ribbons, strings, eyes, or other parts that could
be chewed and/or ingested.
Taylor has one frog that he loves to carry
around with him at home. There are times
he even sleeps with this big green frog that
somehow has become the exception to the
shredded pile of fluff. He, like many other
dogs, likes to play rough with fluff-packed
toys. If your dog likes to rip apart his or her
toys, take note of any toy that contains a
“squeaker” buried in its center. Your dog may
feel that he must find and destroy the squeak
source and could ingest it, in which case
squeaking objects should be “supervision
only” toys.
There are several stuffing-free dog toys
that have come out; however, they are not
indestructible, but some are sturdier than
others. Soft toys should be machine washable.
You want to make sure that you avoid
rawhide and any toys made in China. I do not
recommend using rawhides or rawhide-type
toys. Rawhides soften when chewed and can
become stuck in a dog’s throat.
Instead, very hard rubber dog toys are great
for high-energy pets. They are available in
a variety of shapes and sizes and are fun for
chewing and for carrying around. Rope toys
are always big hits with dogs that like to play
fetch. Tennis balls make great dog toys, but
keep an eye out for any that could be chewed
through, and discard them immediately if
they become cracked.
If you dog gets bored quickly, dog toys that
can be filled with broken-up dog treats or,
even better, a mixture of broken-up treats and
peanut butter can be challenging. The rightsized dog treat toy can keep a puppy or dog
busy for hours. Only by chewing diligently
can your dog access the treats, and then only
in small bits – very rewarding! Double-check
with your veterinarian about whether you
should give peanut butter to your dog.
It’s good to rotate your dog’s toys weekly
by making only four or five toys available at
a time. And it always good to provide toys
that offer a variety of uses – at least one toy
to carry, one to “kill,” one to roll and one to
“baby.” Hide-and-Seek is also a fun game for
dogs to play. “Found” toys are often much
more attractive than a toy that is blatantly
introduced. Making an interactive game out
of finding toys or treats is a good rainy-day
activity for your dog, using up energy without
the need for a lot of space.
Interactive play is very important for your
dog because he needs active “people time.”
By focusing on a specific task, like repeatedly
returning a ball or playing hide-and-seek
with treats or toys, your dog can expel pentup mental and physical energy in a limited
amount of time and space. This greatly
reduces stress due to confinement, isolation
and/or boredom. For young, high-energy and
untrained dogs, interactive play also offers an
opportunity for socialization and helps them
learn about appropriate and inappropriate
behavior with people and with other animals,
like jumping up or being mouthy.

Wake Forest ‘Thrift and Gift’
Shop a Fun, Unique Concept
for a Good Cause

It is almost hard to believe that the beautifully refurbished cottage at 839 South Main
Street now houses a charity thrift store. Upon
first glance, the location, now home to 501c3
nonprofit The Giving Tree, feels a lot more
like a cute and trendy boutique, with its dark
wood interior moldings and sassy, fun decor.
Leigh Grieco, the Giving Tree’s board president, was going for exactly that vibe.
“Most of our items are donations,” Grieco said. “We want to take the items that are
loved, but maybe don’t really fit in your decor
anymore, (such as) the pieces you keep pulling out of the closet during spring cleaning,
but you can’t quite push yourself to throw
away. Those are our niche items, we want to
take those beautiful pieces that you love and
give them new life.”
And standing in the front room of The Giving Tree, one can see that this goal has been
realized. Absent is the trademark thrift store
dust and clutter. Browsing at The Giving Tree
does not feel like treasure hunting as thrift
shopping sometimes tends to, and one needn’t
pick through tons of shabby items to find a
diamond in the rough. Instead the merchandise is clean, neat and imaginatively staged by
Grieco and her team, making every item on
The Giving Tree’s fun and funky sales floor

The American Legion Post 187 Riders will journey to the Fort Bragg Warrior

soldiers and their family members.

This will be a beautiful measure of our gratitude toward the soldiers doing
the heavy lifting for our country. Many recuperating soldiers are young with

Police Turkey Drive Helps
Wake Forest Families
The Wake Forest Police Department concluded its Seventh Annual Turkey Drive by distributing over 700 turkeys to area families at the Wake Forest Community House on Monday,
November 25.
The turkeys went fast during the first-come, first-served event.
According to Det. M.W. Sattler, the founder and organizer of the annual Turkey Drive, several residents reported arriving as early as 5:30 a.m. to receive their frozen turkey.
“We provided just over 700 turkeys to people in need,” Sattler said. “The event would not
be possible without the incredible assistance of area residents, businesses and other organizations whose generosity helped make the Thanksgiving holiday a little easier for hundreds of
people and families.”
Sattler organized the police department’s first Turkey Drive in 2007. Since then, the department has distributed more 3,400 turkeys to needy families in our area.

Restoration CDC
Restoration Community Development Corporation’s mission is to “improve the economic,
educational and housing needs of the underserved residents in Northern Wake County.” It
takes very little time sitting in the office of Eugenia Pleasant, President/ CEO of Restoration
CDC, to see that fulfilling the mission is no simple task. Restoration CDC is the outreach arm
of New Bethel Baptist Church and was the vision of Pastor Lenwood Long in trying to bring
about more community involvement. There is a food pantry which expands to food baskets
during the holidays, a clothing closet, STEM program for young girls a HOPE program which
provides mentoring, financial, educational and job searching assistance, a Toys for Tots
spreadsheet to make Christmas wishes come true and the list goes on… In addition to
Pleasant’s work with Restoration CDC, Eugenia is very active with the Rolesville Chamber, its

Parks & Recreation accepting
facility rental reservations
The Wake Forest Parks and Recreation Department began accepting 2014 facility rental
reservations on Monday, December 2, according to the following schedule:
Reservations for the Wake Forest Community House, 133 W. Owen Ave., and available
spaces at E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road, will be accepted beginning at 8 a.m. in the
Wake Forest Town Hall Ground Floor Meeting Room, 301 S. Brooks St. The Ground Floor
Meeting Room is most easily accessible through town hall’s Taylor Street entrance.
Reservations for the Alston-Massenburg Center will be accepted at the Alston-Massenburg
Center, 416 N. Taylor St., starting at 2 p.m.
Reservations for the Flaherty Park Community Center will be taken at the Flaherty Park
Community Center, 1226 N. White St., beginning at 10 a.m.

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is sampling deer harvests this month
for the agency’s statewide
Chronic Wasting Disease
(CWD) surveillance effort.
CWD is a fatal disease,
although deer may not show
symptoms for five years or
more. No treatment or cure
for CWD exists. Direct, animal-to-animal contact is a
means of transmission, but
evidence also suggests that
contaminated environments
present risks.
Humans are not known to
contract CWD.
Although CWD has not
been detected in North Carolina, deer populations have
tested positive for the disease
in Virginia, West Virginia and
20 other states, as well as in
two Canadian provinces.
The Wildlife Commission
conducts surveillance of the
white-tailed deer population
to monitor for the presence
of the disease and prevent its
spread if it is detected in the
state’s deer population.
Last month, a friend of
mine killed a big-bodied,
small-racked buck in Halifax
County. After quartering the
deer, we removed the head
(a macabre act, to be sure)
and called Andrew Mynatt,
a Commission wildlife forest
manager, who drove out to
pick up the specimen, one of
several hundred he and Conservation Technician Adam
Johnson have collected in the
area from hunters and some
road-kills. Mynatt took the
harvest information on a form
and used a topographic map
to mark the exact site of the
kill.
The Commission has been
conducting CWD surveillance of white-tailed deer
since 1999, including two
statewide sampling efforts in
2003 and 2008, and smaller
scale sub-sampling efforts in
other years. The 2013 surveillance effort will be the most
extensive yet as Commission
staff seeks to collect samples
from a minimum of 3,000
deer from across the state.
Maria Palamar, the Commission’s wildlife veterinarian, said in a release, “We’ll
collect the brain stem and
retropharyngeal lymph nodes
to submit for laboratory testing. Collection of these tissues does not interfere with
a hunter’s ability to retain the

Suitable samples can be
taken from any deer 1½ years
or older. While younger deer
(i.e., button bucks) can potentially have the disease, it
will not have progressed far
enough that it can be detected
in the testing.

O
ne night, long ago, a very young couple
arrived in a very small town, searching
for a place to rest for the evening. The
young man was a carpenter. His wife was expecting
a baby at any time, and we might imagine that they
were exhausted from the journey of the day. As
providence would have it, due to a requirement by the
government that all citizens should return to the place
of their birth to be registered, Bethlehem was filled
to capacity and not a single room could be secured
for these weary, needy travelers. They were offered
instead, by a compassionate innkeeper, a place to rest
where the animals were stabled.
On the one hand, these weary travelers were not
unlike us: taking care of business, doing what was
required of them, and simply needing a place to
lodge for the evening. But on the other hand, they
were very different! They had been selected by God
to be the earthly parents of the long-awaited Messiah,
Emmanuel, the Son of God.
Although very few recognized it that night, the
greatest biological miracle in history was about to
take place. This young woman who gave birth was a
virgin. Mary had never “slept” with a man. This baby
was conceived by the Holy Spirit and was indeed
“the Son of God.” Jesus was different from any baby
born before or after that blessed night.
This is what Christmas is really all about, so I would
encourage you to read from your Bible Matthew
chapters 1 and 2, and Luke chapters 1 and 2. Take a
few moments to read these verses slowly, think about
them, read them again, and let the real meaning of
Christmas find its way into your heart.
