Autistic boy evades deportation
Family gets reprieve following urgent petitions
A Filipino boy with autism,
Tyrone Sevilla, who was at risk
of being deported from Australia,
will be finally allowed by the
Australian Immigration Ministry to remain in the country. A
spokesman for Immigration Minister Peter Dutton had stepped
in to grant permanent visas,
'subject to standard immigration checks and the receipt of
required documentation'. “This
process should be concluded in
coming weeks,” he said.
Despite the good news, Maria
Sevilla recently told ABC Local
Radio that she had not received
any official documentation from
the Minister.
A 4,000-page petition was
presented to Minister Dutton
asking him to intervene in the
case. Around 120,000 petitioners, mostly from the Filipino
community in Australia who expressed their support for Tyrone
and Maria, signed the document.
“I looked at the case and I have
determined we will provide these
people with a permanent arrangement and permanent outcome in
Australia,” Dutton was quoted as
saying to the media. “And I think
that’s good for them.”
“I’m very pleased we can provide the assistance to a young boy

Ilonggo Association holds Mother’s Day dinner-dance
The success of an organisation primarily depends
on achieving its purpose
and objectives. This is exactly what the officers of
the Ilonggo Association of
Victoria Inc (IAVI) are doing.
Quietly, they do their charity work in the Philippines
with funds coming from
donations they raised here
in Australia.
Last 9 May 2015, IAVI’s
Mother’s Day Dinner-Dance
was held to honour the
mothers and at the same
time raise funds for the
group’s charity works.
IAVI’s charity work
In his speech, IAVI President Melvin Espiga reported the result of the
group’s fundraising. “Last
January, with our Adviser
Neds Sarcepuedes, Vice
President Patsy Gutierrez,
her husband Alex, Don
Calfoforo and wife Heidi,
Elizabeth de la Cruz and
my wife Frances, we visited
our Gawad Kalinga (GK)
projects both in Iloilo and
Negros Occidental. We have
the Sibol School Building
at Arevalo, Iloilo City and
the Bed and Breakfast,
a two-storey building at
GK Fiat, Silay City, Negros
Occidental,” he said adding
that both projects are now
operational. IAVI has been a
partner of GK for a long time.
Espiga also reported that
IAVI awarded 12 grantsin-aid scholarships to poor
but deserving students
of Central Philippine
University, making a total of
51 recipients as of 2015. The
Gawad Kalinga Bed and Breakfast in Negros
officers also held its annual
donation to Asilo de Molo
Home for the Aged in Iloilo
City and to St. Vincent’s de
Paul Home for the Older
Persons in Bacolod City. In
November last year, IAVI
Treasurer, Elaine Soriano
and member Terry Apines
gave IAVI’s initial donation
to the Ladies of CharityHome for the Aged in Roxas
City.
A night to remember
During the Mother’s Day
Dinner-Dance, guests enjoyed dancing and good
food. Mary Ann Vanderhorst
and Predz Wilson provided
song numbers, while Matthew Fabbiano and Semra
Ataman rendered ballroom
dance numbers.
Philippine Honorary Con-
Supporting home for the aged
sul General to Victoria Felix
Pintado delivered an inspirational message.
Dom Lobriza and Carmela
Sison were the emcees of
the night.

Social media: Boon or bane
Saying that social media is powerful is a
definite understatement. With the massive
proliferation of technologies making access
to social media quite easy, social media has
become a major source of news and opinions.
On a personal basis, our Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube page have
become our public diary and public statement on where we stand on issues—whether
trivial or almost same as trivial? It has connected us to family and friends from here
to as far as Timbuktu, without having the
benefit of a face-to-face contact.
On a professional basis, digital marketing has used the social media handle as
well to strengthen their brands and engage
with their audiences. Communicating with
markets and receiving instant feedback
have never been faster. With the blink of
an eye, you get to know what your markets
want, and how you can satisfy and even
delight them.
But like any platform, social media can be
used both for good and bad. Since technology has afforded us to share information so
quickly and so easily, there’s no stopping us
from spreading both the good and the bad.
The recent case of a Filipino boy diagnosed
with autism bound for deportation from
Australia caught the fervent support of social media users and spread the advocacy
through change.org. Complemented by a
multi-paged petition, the decision swung
to the family’s favour and they will get to
stay in Australia.
When we share what is good and what
is true, we create an ambiance of optimism
and sometimes generate a positive response
to advocacies. It also helps in building and
sustaining productive relationships among
social and business contacts. However,
when we share what’s negative, we foster
an air of doubt and pessimism. It destroys
our notion of people and sometimes creates
an irreparable crack in relationships.
Of late, Gawad Kalinga founder Tony
Meloto has become a target of malicious
news when reports said that his speech
was described as “self-serving” and he
was tagged as making “sexist” and “elitist”
remarks. While we know Tony Meloto as a
virtuous person, we must also admit that
he’s not perfect. Even so, the statement by
the organisers of his talk at the University
of Hawaii just appeared on social media
and spread like wildfire, without him being
given the benefit of a personal communication. We know how quickly a person or a
company can be judged by the accelerated
pace of transmission that in a matter of
minutes, millions could actually think that
Tony Meloto is indeed sexist.
Social media has the power to make or
break someone. It can uncannily promote
as positive a person of ill repute and destroy
someone who has generously given of himself to noble goals. This is not to encourage
people from exposing the ills of society and
of the world. But, and this should be said,
before we do, read carefully and thoroughly.
As users of social media, we should be prudent and decisive in our posts and what we
share in public.
Sometimes we read a person’s post without going through an attached article and
follow that person’s opinions. We browse
through the posts too quickly and without
a second glance make a judgment without
fully understanding what was posted. The
volume of information shared over social
media should expand our knowledge and
widen our perspective, and thus help us
form opinions based on our own reflections.
We shouldn’t take information for granted,
but instead be cognizant of the fact that
our words have an impact on ourselves
and on others.
A Biblical verse says that to whom much
is given, much will be asked from him/her.
Social media is a great tool and a powerful
one, too. Literally, that power is within our
own fingers. Given this much, we should be
an instrument for advancing those elevating our vigilance to fighting what’s wrong
and amplifying our resolve to make good
intentions actionable goals.

This year marks the 117 th
Independence Day of the Philippines. It is a major date on the
Filipino calendar, but what is it?
The national holiday, held
annually on 12 June, commemorates the day during which the
declaration of independence
from the Spanish colonial forces
was made by General Emilio
Aguinaldo in 1898. This was the
first time the Philippine flag was
raised and the national anthem
was played and sung.
As such, the 12th of June is a
day to celebrate the freedom of
Filipinos everywhere.
Despite this early declaration,
true independence did not come
to the Philippines until 4 July
1946. Neither Spain nor the
United States recognised Philippine independence, with the
Spanish government handing
over the Philippines to the US
in the 1898 Treaty of Paris.
The Philippines refused to
recognise the Treaty of Paris,
and this eventually led to the
Philippine-American War.
Following World War II and
the end of Japanese occupation
in the Philippines, President
Jose P. Laurel proclaimed independence once more. This
time, it was granted through the
Treaty of Manila on 4 July 1946.
This date was originally observed as Independence Day until 1962, when President Diosdado Macapagal declared 12 June
as the new Independence Day of
the Philippines, in recognition of
the original declaration. The 4th
of July then became “Philippine
Republic Day” instead.
The battles fought by our
forefathers were not just to
free us from the bondage of oppression and the hardships of
being a colonised people. Their
ultimate dream was for us to triumph over our own limitations,
to set us free so that by reform-
Our day
of Independence
ing ourselves we could fulfil our
potential - to be proud of our
culture, of our heritage, of who
we are – and uphold the dignity
of being Filipino, wherever we
go, by living exemplary lives.
When we free ourselves, we
let our kind-heartedness express
itself in our relationships, in
our work and in our sharing,
especially with those who are
less fortunate.
Our freedom also enables us
to look beyond any disagreement or turmoil in our community to embrace that which
unites all of us as a proud
people.
In freedom there is peace
and, in honest cooperation and
understanding, there is the treasure of unity that binds us into
a strong and happy community
of people wherever we may be
in the world.
Our freedom is worthy of
celebration. The theme for
the 117th Anniversary of the
Proclamation of Philippine Independence is:
Kalayaan 2015: Tagumpay sa
Pagbabagong Nasimulan, AbotKamay na ng Bayan
Independence 2015: Triumphs through Reforms, within
Nation’s reach”
So, how can Filipinos in
Victoria celebrate this momentous occasion and express the
love for the mother country?
While there are many ways to
celebrate, there are at least two
events that I encourage you to
join in and celebrate as a Filipino community:
• Independence Day Mass
at 7pm on 11 June at St
Brigid’s Church, Fitzroy
North
• Flag-raising ceremony at
8am on 12 June at Federation Square, Melbourne

Queer
Life
RYAN PERDIO
I am currently in the Philippines’ Ninoy Aquino International Airport, typing out this
article, seated in one of the
departure lounges that pepper the recently refurbished
facilities.
I’ve been here for almost
four hours now, an unexpected and – truth be told
– an inconvenient delay on
our scheduled departure.
I’m headed back home to
Melbourne after spending
some time in the sunny isles
of our homeland; a threeweek jaunt that combined a
late Easter holiday as well as
a wedding where yours truly
played the part of Best Man.
Both the ceremony and my
trip had been long planned
and awaited, and both much
anticipated with eagerness
and excitement.
Life is filled with journeys
– metaphorically and liter-
ally – of seemingly limitless
destinations and differing
degrees of distances; travels
that fundamentally shape the
path of our destiny. Wisely,
those sagacious amongst us
extol the virtue of the journey – the lesson in travelling.
Many of us, however, have
eyes firmly set at the eventual point. End of the line.
I value the importance of
waiting. That limited period
of being in transit. The status
of being in-between; neither
at the point of origin nor the
destination.
For the most part, the beginning of this year has been
about slowing down and
hibernating; a reaction to
a very hectic, very chaotic
closing moments of last year.
Nothing really happened in
the past months. I guess, it
was just life going on. A more
timid pace but still not with-
In transit:
The lesson in waiting
out the surprises and challenges that invariably occur.
It’s funny how after a certain moment of stillness – of
conscious inactivity – that
life suddenly beckons despite the lack of initiation.
The last few weeks have
certainly shown this.
At first, in preparation
for this holiday, I was made
to be organised, I needed
to prioritise. There were
places to see, people to meet,
things to be done. But now
at its conclusion, not only
have I been given purpose
to plan, but also to realise
those things that I’ve awhile
been neglecting now need
to be realised. Encounters,
whether by chance or design,
can spur on an individual.
And nothing does so strongly
until hearts are concerned.
You see, I’ve met someone. Truly unexpected but
definitely certain. And while
there is distance between
us – he, based in Manila;
I, in Melbourne – the tyranny of miles will surely
not overcome what has been
awakened in my heart that
has been awhile asleep and
awaiting the moment we met.
The inner glow must have
emanated brightly that day.
And therein lies the simple
reason – and the important
lesson I place in waiting.
Nothing is valued so preciously in this life than for
that something which has
been long pined for. After all,
what kind of worth has anything if handed on a silver
platter and so easily attained.
Now, if you’ll excuse me.
It’s the final boarding call.
I’m off to my destination.

Annual General Meeting
last 3 May 2015 at the Main

During the Holy Mass,
the entrance hymn was
dedicated to the Blessed
Virgin Mary. The recessional saw flower offerings
of the ladies to the Nuestra

the beloved Mother of Jesus while the Immaculate
Mother song was played on
the background.
Hawaiian was the motif
of the affair.
The speeches of the guest
speakers centred on the importance and significance of
the role of a mother to the
human race.
Marina Ruivivar, founder
of FCCVI and psychologist,
covered the spiritual side
and cited the Hail Mary
prayer as the inspiration for
being a mother. She said that
mothers have versatile roles

Another tribute was the
beautiful rendition of Lerma

titled “Iingatan Ka” popularised by Carol Banawa.
All mothers were requested
to form a semi-circle while
listening to the song with
President Henrietta Soledad, handing tokens. Tears
flowed at that moment and
mostly were emotional remembering their own beloved mothers.
Some PCSFFI members
and guests presented a Hula
dance, while the FASCOVI

Autistic boy
evades deportation
Continued from page 1
who is in need of medical and
educational support, and as a
generous country that’s what
we do,” he added.
Tyrone, 10, lives in Australia with his mother Maria, who works as a registered nurse in a hospital in
Queensland. He arrived in
Australia legally at age 2,
but was later diagnosed with
autism.
This prompted the Migration Review Tribunal to deny
the family a visa extension,
declaring that Tyrone’s autism does not meet the health
requirements and will pose a
“significant cost” to the Australian community.
Maria stays in Australia
with a work visa, which was
about to expire.
Melba Marginson, Victorian Immigrant and Refugee
Women’s Coation Executive
Director, remarked that the
decision is a welcome news.
“It took a well-organised advocacy machinery to achieve
a favourable Ministerial
decision on a very simple
case of human need. This
outcome demonstrates the
importance of collective
strength against powerful
institutions that often lose
sight of their role in relation
to serving people’s interests. Not to be ignored is a
mother’s powerful resolve
to fight for her son’s right to
stay in Australia. The Filipino community celebrates
this outcome, for the story of
Tyrone and Maria is another
example of Filipino bravery
and resilience," she said.
In an earlier interview
with ABC, Maria pleaded
that their request be granted
as their family considers
Australia their home.
“We have been here for
nearly eight years and we’ve
been assimilated in the community,” she said. “I have my
work here and I can actually
provide for Tyrone… that’s
why we’re considering Australia our home.”
Dutton’s decision comes
at the best time as Maria
and her son were facing
imminent deportation. The
process for finalising the
decision will happen in the
coming weeks.
Maria, meanwhile, has yet
to receive formal documentation of the decision. But
she remains hopeful that
the immigration issue will
be settled soon.
“It’s been like a rollercoaster ride, but we were
lucky, we had plenty of
people supporting us, so it
became bearable,” she said.
In the last few years, Australia has strictly enforced its
immigration laws, requiring
immigrant applicants to
meet stringent health criteria
meant to help with public
health and safety as well as
health expenditure for the
government.

Dina Mananquil-Delfino
“This is my comfort in my
affliction, that thy promise
gives me life.” Psalm 119:50
I cannot stand seeing
people hurt and so I have
not really been keen at competitive sports. However,
the fight between Manny
Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather was so highly publicised that I got drawn into
conversations of people
around.
Thousands of “kababayans” prayed, supported, encouraged and hailed Manny
as the hero of the country.
When he lost the fight, just
like the plethora of human
emotions, there were varied
reactions.
As I am not an expert
in the field, I would not
even attempt to rationalise
or analyse what occurred.
Mine is more of a spiritual
reflection to what seemed
as an “unanswered” prayer
to those who sank to their
knees, raised their hands
and claimed the word of God
feverishly for him to bring
home the title. As to taking
home the bacon, win or lose
I was told Manny would be
a Filipino billionaire.
We all suffer loss in life,
for many different reasons
and causes. The loss of a
loved one is one of the greatest pains we can experience,
but loss of our home, job,
health, relationship, identity, purpose, self-esteem,
hope, dreams, friends or
anything dear to us can be
just as devastating.
When Manny was fighting, out of my loyalty as a
Filipino I prayed for him - for
protection, deeper wisdom
and to become an opportunity to be light and salt of the
earth. He has the means, the
platform and the heart to be
one. I pray too that people
would not take his loss as an
unanswered prayer and not
allow the incident to be the

When loss is gain
basis of their faith in God.
After all, has God’s protective hand not prevented
Manny to be injured, disabled or die (even if comments were made that the
fight was somehow a scam)
for in such bloody sports the
cruel twist of fate is always
lurking around?
I pray too that God protects his brain. As I study the
field of dementia more and
more and witness many persons suffer incredible pain
from memory loss caused by
many factors including brain
injury, I believe that losing
one’s recognition of self, of
loved ones, friends, community and the world around us
is much more excruciating
than losing a big fight.
When we are confronted
by some loss, we are encouraged to be much kinder
and gentler to ourselves to
respect our emotions and
reflect on what we can gain
from the experience. What is
the greater purpose? In the
end, loss remains loss only if
we have not learned from it.

Sanghimig Choir: One voice, one mission
Sanghimig Choir, one of
Melbourne’s premier Filipino
parish-based choirs, celebrated its 13th year singing for
St. Simon’s Parish Church
in Rowville. In April 2002,
the group was formed by Jun
Belisario, Gil Barcial and Ver
Umipig and sang on their first
Mass on Mother’s Day. With
its different Pinoy sound
and non-traditional Mass
songs, parishioners started to
notice and admire this new
group. Where do you see a
church where people clap
their hands after the final
hymn? It has become a habit
at this parish ever since. As
Gil and Jun put it, “We want
the parishioners to be in a
joyous mood when they leave
the church, and that’s the
reason why we play fast and
bouncy songs at the end and
it works.” In time, Sanghimig
added to the repertoire songs
from Hillsong Church.
Sanghimig, from the blend
word “Isang” (one) and “Himig” (voice) meaning “One
Voice,” is a name truly reflective of the group, bringing out
the positive spiritual experience of gospel music that
continuously captivate and
inspire the audience with
joyful tones and melody. This
choir has also coloured the
celebrations of many wedding ceremonies with lovely
selections.
“We have come a long
way since our humble beginnings,” says Umipig, the
choir master and leader of
the group. Umipig has the
qualities of an able liturgist
and an accomplished mentor.
With his mischievous eyes
and graceful movements, he
conducts each performance
with passion and has led the
group to new heights.
In 13 years, Sanghimig
has performed at almost
every type of event be it for
charity events, community
concerts, special occasions,
weddings and even funerals. The members just love
being together and playing
music. “We are just like a big
typical Filipino family really,
and when we are together,
there is always much fun
and laughter, dancing, goodnatured teasing and lots of
food,” said Barcial.
Parishioners in Rowville
and from other suburbs
commented that there is
something likeable in the
way the group performs that
captivates the hearts of the
churchgoers. “We give glory
to the Lord with every song
we sing and hopefully, the
churchgoers will feel this
too,” added Barcial.
Sanghimig choir sings
every Sunday 11am at St.
Simon’s Parish Church in
Rowville.
The group is composed of
the following: Rani Alvarez,

A declaration of faith
Cassandra Chiong
The best stories are always
the ones told from the heart.
The tangible experiences told
to both inspire and to encourage; the testimonies that
physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually change
lives. They are the ones that
stick. On 19 April 2015, a
congregation of believers from
Faith Christian Community
Church bore witness to the
testimony shared by two of
their members prior to their
water baptism, the public
declaration of their faith.
Paula Marie Fajardo, a 20year old University student,
and Eduarlito Mora, a 48-year
husband and father, stood in
front of many to declare that
at the very core of their being,
they have been completely
changed, having begun a new
life “under the leadership
of Jesus". Similar to every
testimony, they recounted
their lives prior to accepting
Jesus Christ as their Lord and
Saviour; the moving story of
one through a church family
camp and several church services later, the other through
the changing influence of his
now spouse.
Through their recounting, God’s changing grace
has been continually evident amidst their moments
of doubts and hesitations,
struggles and successes. The
joy they found in Christ’s love
translated into the physical
act of immersing themselves
in the water and being lifted
up again, the symbolic representation of both believers’
acceptance of Christ’s death,
burial and resurrection for
their sins. Held at Sunshine
Leisure Centre in front of not
just believers but also the
public patrons of the place,
both members have declared
that their lives have taken a
turn for the better, a step of
faith they are only too willing
to share. Create your own rewarding business

Meloto discusses social entrepreneurship during Australian tour
Certificate of appreciation for supporting GK
Tony Meloto, founder
and Father Gawad Kalinga
(GK), talked about Gawad
Kalinga’s model of wealth
creation through the establishment of social enterprises to alleviate the condition
of poor Filipinos back home.
He noted the need for Filipinos to be partners in the
journey of development instead of being beneficiaries
of charities. The talk was
part of the GK Social Enterprise Family Day held last 31
May 2015 at St Paul’s Community Centre in Sunshine.
In his talk in Melbourne,
Meloto also thanked Filipinos abroad for their amazing
generosity to support GK in
its programs and activities.
He also thanked the Australian government and the
Filipinos in Australia for
helping GK during the Haiyan typhoon tragedy.
Two non-Filipinos, Plush
And Play founder Fabien
Courteille and author of
‘Genius of the Poor’ Tom
Graham talked about how
they were inspired by GK
and how they started their
own social enterprises. GK products such as bags,
wallets, rosaries and diaries were also shown to the
public through a catwalk
presentation.
The Australian Social Enterprise “Gkraft” was also
launched during the event.
Gkraft is a social enterprise
helping GK social entrepreneurs and communities
become sustainable.
Aside from Melbourne,
Meloto also travelled to
Sydney, Canberra and the
last leg of his trip, in Perth
to talk about GK’s social
entrepreneurship.

Concert King spoils Filipinos in Melbourne
Earvin Charles Cabalquinto
Once again, the Concert
King delivered an undeniably entertaining, engaging and extravagant show
in his 3D Tatlong Dekada
Australia Tour Anniversary
concert in Melbourne. Aside
from hundreds of spectators,
mothers of all ages were entertained by Martin Nievera
in a one-of-a-kind concert on
Mother’s Day, 10 May 2015,
held at the Robert Blackwood
Hall in Monash University.
The show started with a
roster of performances from
local artists in Melbourne.
Songs with themes about
expressing love for mothers were sang by Charlene
Sotelo, Alyssa Limbo, Mary
Ann Van Der Horst and Nino
Deomano. The Kalapati Band
also showcased their musical
prowess in the concert. Apart
from singing all-time hits,
local artists performed a few
original compositions.
A witty audio-visual presentation showing a re-enactment of the Concert King’s
popular TV show “Martin
Late @ Night” officially
opened the much-awaited
show. As soon as Concert
King hit the stage and started
performing, ecstatic reactions filled the venue. Everyone was entertained as he
sang hit songs ranging from
“Ikaw Lang ang Mamahalin,”
“Kahit Isang Saglit,” and
many other teleserye theme
songs. He also performed
contemporary and upbeat
songs during the concert.
The concert did not fall
short in making the audience
smile, giggle and laugh. He
delivered witty spiels by
playing with words and reenacting a few scenarios.
The pronunciation of the
word “mate” was used in a
situation and became “Are
you coming back? I mate
(might!)”, which triggered
loud laughter from the audience. Before singing a song,
he also shared an inspirational message by saying to
the Filipinos, “Go out there
and be the Champ,” as a
way of reminding Filipinos
to be proud in representing
the Philippines in Australia.
On top of that, his creativity
shone on stage as he interacted with a couple in the
audience and promptly composed a hilarious yet well
sang love song for them. This
occurred by using the words
“bangus,” “voice,” “smile,”
and “Pangasinan.” It was
through these moments that
the audience witnessed Martin Nievera’s versatility as the
one and only Concert King.
As a Mother’s Day treat,
Nievera requested all mothers in the audience to stand
up. He serenaded them with
the song “Wildflower” while
giving away flowers as he
moved around in the concert
venue. Since the concert was
also a celebration of Mother’s
Day, Vicki, the twin sister of
Martin graced the concert.
Pilita to charm
Melbourne fans
Photos by EventsFocus www.eventsfocus.com.au
Apart from her solo performance, she also sang a duet
with Martin. They sang a
heart-warming rendition of
“After All” and “Tell Me”.
With the live accompaniment of Filipino composer
and arranger Louie Ocampo,
the 3D Tatlong Dekada concert was a smashing success.
A combination of hilarious
spiels, a selection of all-time
favourite Pinoy hit songs
and a world-class performance set the anniversary
concert like no other. The
Concert King did not only
delight all mothers with his
charm and talent, but he
made the Filipino audience
feel special and at-home.
The Australia Tour concert
in Melbourne was staged by
Eventfullrise Productions, in
partnership with sponsors in
Melbourne.
(Editor’s note: After the
concert, Martin accommodated all the guests who
queued up for a photo opportunity with him. EventsFocus, the event’s official photographers have provided
the photos on their Facebook
page for free being one of the
sponsors of the event.)
Giving back to the country where she started her career, Pilita Corrales, dubbed
as Asia’s Queen of Songs, is
gracing her audiences once
again with a performance
showcasing her ageless and
timeless talent for singing,
featuring her iconic songs
that made her popular to
this day. Known for versatility in singing as well
as the wit and humor to
make people laugh while
on stage, in addition to her
charm and sophistication
as a performer, Pilita Corrales was chosen by Oyster
Productions to perform in
Melbourne, Australia on
15 August 2015 7pm at the
Village Green Hotel in Mulgrave, Victoria.
As timeless as her pieces,
Pilita is a performer that
never seems to age both in
talent and in looks.
“ I t f e e l s l i ke c o m i n g

Pilita has worked alongside
popular stars such as Sarah
Geronimo, Regine Velasquez, Vice Ganda and other
Filipino artists. The list also
includes known international artists such as Sammy
Davis, Jr., Pat Boone, Frank
Sinatra and Julie Andrews.
More than just the roles
she could play and the
songs she could sing, Pilita
is one whose talent is recognised worldwide with
records such as being the
first woman to be on top of
the Australian pop charts
with her song “Come Closer
to Me,” and a winner of the
“Best Performer Award” in
an international festival
during the First Tokyo Music Festival, and at some
point starring in a Victorian
TV circuit.
While as a person deemed
of many accomplishments,
Pilita Corrales remains
humble both in business
and real life which adds to
the reason why she is loved
by fans and those who knew
her.
“I perform a lot in Sydney
and other cities, but in Melbourne, not so often, so this
is very, very special to me.
I hope they still remember
me. I will talk to all of them
and take pictures and sign
CDs. I love you all,” Pilita
said.

‘When the great scorer,
comes to write against
your name. It matters not
if you have won or lost
but how you played the
game.’ –Grantland Rice
And knowing that every
time we played as a band,
we played our hearts out is
reason enough not to regret.
Life is meant to be lived, following our passions, balls
out, and realising our potential. Doing what makes
us happy.
Beta Days is an acoustic
band that mainly performs
covers and also a few original compositions in development. The members of
the band are four friends
from diverse backgrounds,
in their mid-twenties who
really love music and decided as a group to share
this love to the community.
It made its debut performance last 10 May at the
Pinoy Late Shift ProgramMother’s Day edition, at
92.3 ZZZ fm.
The members of the band
include Aldrin ‘Drin’ Santos, David Le, Yale Michael
and Raine Cabral. Drin is
a registered nurse by profession having spent three
years working in the U.K.
before coming to Oz. An
all-out rocker at heart, Drin
comes to the group with a
wealth of experience hitting
the drums for the past fifteen years and was actually
a member of a metal band
in the Philippines. Since
he is now playing acoustically, he is a dab hand at
the ‘cajon’.
Next up is David Le, the
lead guitarist. He initially
started on drums. When
Dave met Yale, another Beta
Days band member and who
taught him how to play the
guitar, all bets were off.
Playing the guitar at 14,
the instrument took over
and won hands down over
drums. His musical heroes
include John Mayer and
Coldplay with a bit of Kings
of Leon thrown in. His ‘what
you see is what you get, no
dramas’ personality combined with his dedication
to the craft makes him the
perfect lead.
Then we have Yale Michael, the rhythm guitarist, who in his own words
‘goes with the flow’. He is
a self-taught guitar player
who goes by feel and lets
the music speak to him
and takes him to a different place. He is laid back
and like a surfer, prefers to
cruise and ride that wave.
As a Kiwi transplant, he
considers Melbourne his
second home. Aside from
music, Yale is an avid basketball player, earning him
the moniker ‘Air Yale’. His
passion for music as well as
his belief that ‘ball is life’ are
his two constants.
Lastly, there’s Raine Cabral, the singer of the band,
the rose among the thorns.
Raine will be the first to
tell you with humility that
she is not the best singer in
the world but she loves to
sing. And it is this love for
singing that served as the
spark for her to seize the day
and act on a nebulous plan
with Yale five years ago to
form a band that came into
fruition February of this
year. Yale brought in Dave
who he’s been mates with
since their early teens and
Raine brought in Drin who
she knew from their church
group at the Holy Redeemer
Servant Community.
The first band practice
brought about an instant
synergy amongst the group.
Playing together never once
felt forced or put on. The
group chemistry was on
point and everyone was
in sync with each other’s
wavelength. As a band, Beta
Days hopes to just share its
combined passion for music
and use music’s universal
language to spread love and
peace.

Migration
Mentor
FELIX CARAO
A revised English language skills registration standard will be implemented
starting 1 July 2015 for all
nurses and midwives.
The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia
(NMBA) developed the revised standard following an
evaluation of the existing
standard. The nursing and
midwifery English language
skills registration standard
provides pathways for applicants to prove that they
possess the necessary English language skills to safely
practice their profession in
Australia.
The nursing and midwifery ELSR standard contains
three pathways: the primary
language pathway, the extended education pathway,
or the English language test
pathway.
The primary language
pathway is for applicants
who grew up and completed
all of their education in a
country where English is
the native language. Ap-
plicants using this pathway
must provide evidence that
English is their primary
language, and they have
attended and adequately
completed at least six years
of primary and secondary
education with English as a
medium of instruction and
assessment in one of the recognised countries, namely:
Australia, United States,
United Kingdom, Canada,
New Zealand, the Republic
of Ireland and South Africa.
Applicants must also prove
that their qualification in the
profession was taught and
assessed solely in English
in one of the recognised
countries.
The extended education
pathway is suitable for applicants who have finished
at least five years (full-time
equivalent) uninterrupted
education in English in a recognised country. Registered
and enrolled nurses and/
or midwives must present
evidence of the completion
of five (5) years (full-time
New English standard
for nurses, midwives
equivalent) of education
with English as a medium
of instruction and assessment, in any of the recognised countries. Registered
nurses and/or midwives are
required to have completed
a minimum of two years, and
enrolled nurses at least one
year, of a full-time equivalent pre-registration program
of study in English, as part
of their entire education
in English in a recognised
country.
The English language
pathway is for health practitioners who were not taught
and assessed in English
in one of the recognised
countries. Applicants must
obtain the required minimum scores in one of the
following English language
tests: IELTS, PTE Academic
and TOEFL iBT test.
The scores are no longer
required to be achieved in
one sitting. English language
ability can be demonstrated
by submitting two tests within a six-month period. The
two tests should equal the
required band score in each
of the four components. For
example:
Test One:
S:7.0 L:7.5 W: 6.5 R: 6.5
Test Two:
S: 6.5 L: 7.0 W: 7.5 R: 7.5
These are accepted, as you
have shown that you meet
the English requirement in
all 4 bands.
However, no band score in
either test can be below 6.5.
Test results will be accepted if they were obtained
within the two years before
the date of lodging the application. Test results obtained
more than two years before
the date of lodging the application for registration
will be accepted if, in the
period since the test results
were obtained, the applicants have been employed
continuously as registered
health practitioners in one
of the recognised countries
where English is the primary language of practice,
and lodge their application
for registration within 12
months of completing their
last employment period.
This is also applicable if,
in the period since the test
results were obtained, the
applicants have been continuously enrolled in Boardapproved programs of study.
Ad d i t i o n a l r e s o u r c e s
about the revised standard
are available in the Nursing and Midwifery Board of
Australia website.

Halo-Halo Festival goes OPM
CJ Tamale
It’s not a dinner-dance.
It’s not a pageant. It’s not a

Halo-Halo Festival!
Now on its second year,
Halo-Halo festival continues to bring Melbournebased Filipino talents on
stage. The theme for this
year’s festival is original
Filipino music. The highlight of the Festival is a
musical play titled “Kalayaan” featuring the popular
Filipino choir, Harmonico
Filipino. Musical director
Rolly Limun composed all
original Tagalog songs, to
be interpreted by members
of Harmonico Filipino who
will portray national heroes
such as Jose Rizal, Andres
Bonifacio and Emilio Aguinaldo.
The musicale is for both
Filipino and Australians.
Even though the songs are
in Filipino, there will be
translations on the souvenir
program. The Festival will also feature other artists who will
perform Original Pilipino
Music (OPM) both from
Melbourne and from the
Philippines. The event will
coincide with the Philippines’ celebration of Buwan

The event will be held on

Cebuanos vs
Boholanos duel
in basketball
friendship game
Laura Nisnisan Abejaron
Filipino community in
Victoria, particularly Cebuanos and Boholanos in Hampton Park and the neighbouring suburbs, competed in a
basketball friendship game.
It was held at Hampton Park
Gym along Fordholm Rd. and
Campbell Drive, Hampton
Park on 26 April 2015.
Bohol team was managed and coached by Albert
Pineda and former KaBAI
president Tony Boncales as
manager, while Cebu team
was coached by Alex Ybanez
and Boy Lawa as manager.
It was the best of three
series game. Bohol team won
the first game and the second
game ended at a deadlocked
score. Before the start of the
third game, everyone had
a break for delicious foods
prepared for everyone. A
third round was played and
won by the Cebuano team.
The overall result for both
teams—one win and one lost
and the committee decided
on a point system in which
the Bohol team emerged as
the champion.
Meanwhile, a boodle fight
was held at Cubar’s residence
in South Clayton on 5 May
2015. It is a Filipino military
style of eating where long
tables are prepared and food
is served on banana leaves. As
per tradition, the food should
be eaten using bare hands.
It was a day of fun and
laughter for KaBAI’s officials, members and friends
enjoying various delicacies
with the boodle fight style
of eating. Moreover, thrilling
games with exciting prizes
entertained the members.
Prizes and the all-time favourite lechon were compliments

WBA interim light flyweight Randy Petalcorin
(23-1-1, 18 KOs) scored
a quick first round stoppage of Ma Yi Ming (12-6,
7 KOs) on 24 April at the
Capital Gym in Beijing,
China. Petalcorin put Ming
on the deck three times
before referee Raul Caiz
Jr. waved it off. It was Petalcorin’s first title defence
of his WBA interim World
Title and now, sky is the
limit.
“Mi Ya Ming was ranked
top ten in the world by the
WBA and IBF and WBO
and Petalcorin destroyed
him like he was just a club
fighter “ said Peter Maniatis,
promoter and manager.
“We want to unify all the
major found belts WBC and
WBA and IBF and WBO
then move up in weight and
win more world titles in different weight classes. Randy
is the future star of world
boxing,” he added.

Western Union meets with
Filipino community leaders
PH-Oz holds public-private
partnership policy dialogue
Western Union (WU) organised a dinner-discussion
with the Filipino community
leaders and media last 12-13
May 2015 at the Mulgrave
Country Club and the Emporio DeLa Pasta in Crown
Casino.
Jolene Mullin, WU’s Senior
Marketing Manager from Sydney; Liza Di Blasio, WU Melbourne Consultant and Gene
Orejana, WU New Zealand
Consultant, discussed with
the group Western Union’s
new $5 fee for Victoria. They
assure the community to continue to have a quicker and
safer system to send money
to their loved ones.
Those who attended also
shared inputs on how WU
can effectively tap the Filipino market in Victoria.
Western Union further
promised to always sponsor
events of the Filipino community. Aside from event
sponsorship, Orejana said
WU will continue to “partner
with Filipino organisations
in their endeavour of helping
out and supporting our kababayans in the Philippines.”
The Philippine government, through the PublicPrivate Partnership (PPP)
Center, initiated a Philippine-Australia PPP Policy
Dialogue with Partnerships
Victoria last 21-22 May
2015 at Sofitel Hotel in
Melbourne.
The policy dialogue engaged Australian PPP experts in discussions that
aimed to enrich knowledge,
insights, and experiences
on PPPs. It served as a
venue for Australia to share
its experience on PPPs, particularly that of the State
Government of Victoria,
and how it was able to sustain its PPP Program over
the years.
Philippine government
officials present during
the said policy dialogue
included Senator Ferdinand
Marcos, Jr., Chairman of
the Senate Committee on
Public Works, Public Works
and Highways Secretary
Rogelio Singson, Philippine
Ambassador to Australia
Belen Anota and PPP Center
Executive Director Cosette

Senator Ralph Recto and
Senator Juan Edgardo Angara also sent representatives to the dialogue.

Trade Commission, were
also in attendance.
Australia’s rich experiences on its PPP institutional framework, procurement policies, evaluation
methodologies, and implementation and monitoring
of projects were also tackled
during the discussion.
Socioeconomic Planning
Secretary Arsenio Balisacan highlighted in the
policy dialogue that the
country’s PPP program has
already achieved significant
changes since its launching
in 2010.
“I am proud to say that
the Philippines’ PPP program has come a long way
in terms of developing
bankable PPP projects and
ensuring that they are successfully tendered,” he said.
The overall strategy of
the Philippine Government
now is to step up public infrastructure spending from
2.7 percent of the GDP in
2013 to at least 5 percent
by 2016.
Secretary Balisacan added that through the PPP
program, government will
continue to tap the private sector as partners in
development to help overcome the country’s resource
constraints, deliver muchneeded social services and
public infrastructure facilities and to help sustain the
robust economic growth the
country has been enjoying
in recent times.

Seminar on for UP
internationalisation bid
The Office of the Vice
President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA) and the Office
of International Linkage
(OIL) of the University of
the Philippines, together
with the Filipino-Australian
Student Council (FASTCO)Victoria will present a
seminar on “Towards and
international UP: Serving
the Filipino, Serving
the World” on 9 June,
4-6pm at the Seminar
Room 7.84, Building H
of Monash Univeristy,
Caufield.
The speaker is Aaron Joseph Villaraza,
PhD, Associate Professor of the Institute
of Chemistry UP Diliman, and also Deputy
Director of OIL.
The seminar is part
of UP’s reaching out program to Filipino students,
postdoctoral fellows or faculty at foreign institutions
in academe to discuss new
programs of UP in support of
international collaboration
and the formation of institutional linkages. UP encourages these Filipino academics from different fields to
join its faculty (through the
BalikPhD program), to en-
hance teaching and research
(through the Visiting Professor Program), or to host UP
students/researchers at their
foreign institutions (through
the COOPERATE program).
In recent years, the University of the Philippines
(UP), as part of its mandate
Aaron Joseph Villaraza
as the national university,
has been able to invest in
and develop both infrastructure and human resources, with the objective
of enhancing its educational
programs through increased
research and extension work
both local and international.
This year, several meetings
are being organised around
the world between UP
and Filipinos currently
based abroad involved
in academia, whether
as students, postdoctoral fellows, or faculty at
foreign institutions, to
discuss new programs of
UP in support of international collaboration and the
formation of institutional
linkages.
During the seminar, other
programs of UP’s OVPAA
and OIL will also be discussed, such as mechanisms
for financial support for continued research productivity, continued foreign training, participation in international conferences, hosting
of international meetings
and mechanisms for supporting UP financially.

Pinay mother, Croatian
father, Australian born. Natasha Angeleski is a 26-year
old real estate agent and the
winner of the popular C31
TV show, FASX.
Aside from modelling,
Angeleski also starred in
a film by Min Tran titled
“Roses Are Dead” where
she played a lesbian (available on YouTube). She also
completed her modelling
diploma at Tanya Powell.
Angeleski has only been
to the Philippines once
when she was twelve years
old. This very first visit had
opened her eyes to the beauty of the Philippine beaches
in Cebu and the sadness
of seeing beggars coming
up to the car asking for
money. She believes that the
Filipino in her is her love of
karaoke and of course, food.
She is excited to go back to
the Philippines, thanks to
Philippine Tours for giving
her a return ticket as part of
her prize for winning FASX.
Angeleski’s main reason
in joining FASX was to upgrade her portfolio. Joining
FASX has also given her the
opportunity to work with
a lot of people. She was
fortunate to have an understanding husband who has
supported her throughout
the filming of the show.
She was the only married
contestant in FASX.
Joining FASX has taught
Angeleski a lot. Aside from
meeting influential people
in the modelling industry,
she learned to be patient
with people and to understand that not every situation can be controlled.
Winning FASX has landed
Angeleski the opportunity to
be one of the presenters in a
Project 628 show to be aired
on Foxtel. However, she said
that she will not leave her
job as a real estate agent as
she loves her full-time job
too. She wanted to start a
family soon and said that if
ever she will have a daughter, she will be a model too.
Last month, Angeleski announced on her Facebook
account that she is three
months pregnant.
FASX is still on every
Saturday at 8:30 pm at C31
(digital 44).

Scuba for change
It’s late February 2015,
a crowd is gathering at the
beautiful Sunset Resort. The
setting sun is dipping towards the horizon of Aninuan Beach, a short five-minute
drive from Puerto Galera,
Oriental Mindoro.
The crowd has gathered
here for the launch of Scuba
for Change’s first operation.
Scuba for Change is a unique,
world's first Scuba Diving
social enterprise, where
100% of its profits will be
re-invested back into local
communities to create positive and lasting legacies.
“The inspiration for Scuba
for Change happened on a
family vacation to Cambodia,
where I was exposed to local
children being exploited for
their flesh, exploited for their
innocence. I couldn’t believe
this was happening. Children
were being prostituted and
forced to beg for money in
order to survive.”
“Yet, out of the horror, I
also saw hope. Two small restaurateurs were making a difference. Not only were they
taking kids off the street and
providing them food, shelter
and education, they were also
providing them with a future.
The kids were being taught
a trade. They were taught in
the kitchen how to be a chef,
up front as a future maître de,
how to entertain with dance,
music or performance. The
restaurateurs’ actions broke
the cycle of exploitation. The
seed for change had been
sown and I was inspired!”
Running as a dive operation that offers fun diving
and dive courses, Scuba
for Change will ensure that
100% of the profits generated are reinvested in local
communities throughout
developing nations in need
of social change. There’s no
quick fix, but by building on
the new, and acknowledging
there are ways to improve on
how dive tourism currently
operates, Scuba for Change
aims to make a difference,
offering local people the
tools to take control of their
own future and have lasting
follow-on effects for the community as a whole.
Founder, Albert Li, shared the genesis of Scuba for Change.
Recognising the strengths
of existing and well-established not-for-profit organisations such as the Stairway Foundation, Scuba for
Change aims to form strong
partnerships and channel resources where they can have
the biggest impact. Scuba for
Change will provide funding to assist children from
disadvantaged backgrounds
via Stairway’s Residential
Program. Children will be
taught invaluable life skills
to break the cycle and build
a better future.
Apart from children, Scuba for Change is all about
restoring power back to the
local people. Low-interest
business grants will be offered to locals who wish
to start their own tourismrelated businesses. Locals
will be trained to operate
and manage the dive operation. For locals employed by
Scuba for Change without
the means to fund their own
training, Scuba for Change
will underwrite the training
costs.
To impact as many people
as possible and create real
change in the dive tourism
industry, Scuba for Change
will actively pursue growth
opportunities, establishing
new dive operations throughout developing nations, all
to give it back to the people
and tighten the siphoning
of resources away from the
community.
Founder Albert Li is not
alone on his mission, and
with nearly twenty years
spent in the corporate and
private sector, he knows the
importance of sound governance in determining longterm success. A strong Board
whose members have diverse
backgrounds and capabilities
have banded together, each
offering his time for free.
Scuba for Change ultimately is about creating change.
Scuba diving is merely the
“vehicle”. Divers and nondivers alike can be part of
this venture. “If you’re a nondiver, come snorkel on our
world-class house reef. For
your next romantic or family
vacation, or your work conference, consider staying at
The Sunset Resort—modern
and chic by any international
standards. Bookings made
through Scuba for Change
will create an important
income stream to fund mentioned initiatives.”
Further highlighting the
point that Scuba for Change
is about creating change, not
just about scuba diving, five
of the eight Board Members
do not scuba dive. “We are
united by one simple philosophy: the philosophy that
it is incumbent upon those
of us who have the ability to
create change, to take the lead
and create change in a positive and lasting way. Scuba
for Change is about creating
positive and lasting legacies.”

Filipino featured in art exhibit
Charles Buenconsejo,
Artist in Residence at the
Visual Arts Centre (VAC),
recently had an exhibit
launched on 27 May, 6pm
at La Trobe University. His
exhibit, titled Relative Nothing, was opened by Dr Trevor
Hogan,
Director, Philippines Australia Studies Centre School of Humanities
and Social Sciences of the
same university.
As a winner of the annual Ateneo de Manila University Art Award (for emerging Filipino artists), Charles
Buenconsejo has been Artist
in Residence at the VAC
since mid-April.
After filming a number
of individuals as they recited the English alphabet,
Charles Buenconsejo compressed the collected footages into a single video in a
simultaneous act of exposure
and erasure. Rendering these
layers into a unified object
is only the beginning of his
practice-based research into
what binds us and what sets
us apart. By flattening these
expressions of acknowledgement and communication,
audiences are left with a
distorted thrum of light and
noise, to be extended or
deconstructed throughout
Buenconsejo’s residency
at La Trobe, in an ongoing
experiment with the most
fundamental components of
human interaction.
Exhibit runs from 27 May
to 5 July 2015.

What is the difference
between commission sales
only job and a job that pays
you a retainer? The answer
is obvious isn’t it? The difference is performance. If
you do not perform you
don’t get paid. Yes, it’s true
that when you are on a retainer, you get your salary
even if you do not deliver
a top level of service, however it will catch up with
you and when the market/
your employer realises that
your performance is below
par, then your services will
no longer be needed.
In a previous article, I
wrote about treating your-
self as a business. An aim
for most businesses is to
create a profit. You are the
CEO of your own personal
services company. In your
workplace, you are trading
approximately 40 hours
a week of your life to get
paid back 40 hours. The
question is, are you providing top class 40 hours
to your biggest customer/
employer? If not, why not?
You need to stand out from
the crowd, your skills and
performance have to be
above average to stand out
in our competitive market.
Customers/employees are
harsh; you get one chance
Paid on performance
to prove yourself and when
you get a chance and deliver a mediocre outcome,
not only you will not get
paid, you might not get a
second chance.
There are benefits to
treating yourself as a business. First, you set a higher
standard for your work;
the “good enough” job is
never “good enough”. Everybody can do a good
enough job and that’s not
you. Second, a business
always evolves. If you do
not evolve, such as improve
your skill set, increase your
industry knowledge and
market acumen, you will
be left behind; in short, be
passed over for a promotion. Third, there is a sense
of ownership and accountability. This makes your
career more fulfiling and
actually makes you look
forward to the start of the
week.
Remember that if you are a
kitchen hand, teacher, army
general, manager or the chief
executive of a Fortune 500
company, you don’t get paid
by being busy, but by results.
Until next time… STAY
FOCUSED

The next step after buying your condo
CJ Tamale
Congratulations! You
are now the proud owner
of a new condo unit in the
Philippines. You’ve got your
key and are ready to furnish
your unit after that initial
shock that you have to pay a
lot of unexpected fees such
as the transfer fee, utility
connections fees, legal fees
and others. After paying
your unit for three years,
what’s next?
First option is to do nothing and just leave your unit
empty until you come back
to visit the Philippines. Your
unit is not earning anything
, but at least you don’t have
to pay for your accommodation.
The second option is to let
your relatives live in your
unit. Not really sure about
this one! You let them live
there for free and also send
them monthly allowance?
Maybe too much generosity.
Not to mention that you have
to live with them when you
visit the Philippines.
The third option is to rent
it out, which is what I did. I
am not saying that this is the
best option, but this was my
plan when I bought my unit
in Makati.
After all the stress of preparing the unit, I decided
to “hire” the developer to
manage my unit. I was expecting that I would get
tenants in the first month.
I was wrong. Almost a year
had passed and no tenants.
I think the developer has
hundreds of units to manage that it just cannot look
after mine.
One day, I received a call
from my friend’s brother asking if my unit is available. I
said yes and he asked me if
he can rent it out as he had
a client who was looking for
a place in Makati. That was
the time when I was thinking
of looking for another property manager, someone dealing on a smaller scale so that
there’s less competition with
other properties. I asked him
if he wanted to include my
unit to the list of properties
that he manages. With a 20%
commission, we closed the
deal. This might seem like a
lot, but 80% income is better
than 0%.
Since then, my unit is
being rented on a weekly
and monthly basis, some
short-term, others longer.
My tenants were coming
from all over the world as
my property manager has
set up an online booking
site.
My condo is now earning money on a regular
basis. All I have to do
is to receive the monthly
financial statement and
to check that a deposit has
been made to my bank account in the Philippines. I
don’t have to worry about
paying other fees, internet
connections and cleaning
the bed sheets and towels
as my property manager will
just deduct them from my
income. And if I’m going to
Manila, I just give my dates
to him and he will reserve
my unit for me. If it’s not
available, he will look for
another unit on his list. I
also don’t have to worry
about the exchange rate as
I’m spending my income
from my unit when I’m in
the Philippines.
Don’t get me wrong. It’s
not all breezy and there were
some hiccups along the way.
I trust my property manager
but I had to tell him to improve the reporting of the
monthly finances. I had to
tell him that the safe should
be screwed on the wall and
locks have to be changed.
These things I will see when
I go and visit the unit. But
these are minor things that
I keep reminding him.
All in all, I am happy with
him and my unit is earning
income on a regular basis.
I’ve been with my property
manager for almost six years
now and he is managing my
two properties. If you want,
I can give you his number.
Again, this may not be the
best option but it works for
me.
