The Board of Directors and staff are deeply grateful for all that you have done
to support our work. I thank all those individuals, families and foundations
who have decided to embrace our work by supporting us financially. We are
grateful to all those parishes and groups who have helped us by holding a
baby bottle collection, diaper drive or baby shower. We offer special thanks
to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago, Maryville Academy, St.
Aloysius Catholic Church, St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church and the Port
Ministries for their support.
I thank all the dedicated volunteers who have given their talent and
guidance – Dr. Anthony Caruso, Vitae Corps members, pregnancy center
and Heather’s House volunteers, priests who offer Mass at our chapel at
Heather’s House, and those who pray for the families we serve. We fondly
remember the day Dr. Alveda King visited our downtown center, led us in
prayer, and participated in our most recent video.
There is still much for us to do in this culture that does not value the
sacredness and dignity of human life. At Aid for Women, we continue to
speak the truth with love, as we have done for more than thirty-six years.

It is with great appreciation that I share a summary of our life-saving
work during 2014. Our pregnancy resource centers were very busy this
year, thanks to a generous grant from the Vitae Foundation which helped
strengthen our internet presence. Visits to our five centers were up 66%,
and calls to our crisis pregnancy helpline were up 50%. The Knights of
Columbus donated brand new state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment, and
we now perform ultrasound examinations at our Wicker Park location in
addition to our downtown and Cicero centers. We continue to provide a
loving and life-affirming home for moms and babies at Heather’s House.

pregnancy help centers - 5 locations
Founded in 1978 on the faith and teachings of the Catholic Church, Aid for
Women reaches out to thousands of women annually throughout the greater
Chicagoland area who are facing unexpected or difficult pregnancies. Our
life-affirming services are offered to clients free-of-charge and include:
COMPASSIONATE COUNSELING
Each client is provided with compassionate counseling as well as the
emotional, practical and spiritual support she needs to feel empowered
and secure in her decision to choose life for her unborn baby. We discuss
the development of her baby, abortion procedures and risks, adoption
possibilities as well as address the underlying issues which are making her
pregnancy difficult. We help the client address these issues, while guiding
and supporting her in her pregnancy and in developing a plan for her future
and that of her baby.
PREGNANCY TESTS AND ULTRASOUND EXAMS
Following a pregnancy test at one of our centers, a limited obstetrical
ultrasound exam is available to the client after the sixth week of pregnancy.
The ultrasound allows us to determine the fetal age and approximate due
date as well as rule out an ectopic pregnancy. The ultrasound exam also
allows the client to observe her baby’s heartbeat and movements while we
continue to talk about the development of her child.
MEDICAL AND COMMUNITY REFERRALS
Our clients come to us with many different material, physical and emotional
needs — including housing, food, employment, healthcare and relationship
issues. Aid for Women has established partnerships with a network of
medical and community agencies, including Catholic Charities of the
Archdiocese of Chicago and Resurrection Health Care, which allow us to
better address and serve the needs of our clients and their families.
EARN WHILE YOU LEARN (EWYL) PROGRAM
Aid for Women clients are invited to join the Earn While Your Learn (EWYL)
Program. By participating in this exciting and unique program, clients gain
valuable knowledge about becoming the best parents they can be — all
while earning new baby items along the way!
MOMS-TO-BE AND PARENTING SUPPORT GROUPS
Our client groups meet weekly and provide an opportunity for our clients to
learn, grow and meet other moms, while Aid for Women provides them with
ongoing support throughout their pregnancies and beyond.

vitae corp members
Vitae Corps members are recent college graduates who volunteer by living and working together in community at
our residential programs to help provide our residents with safe and nurturing homes. Vitae Corps members are
dedicated to Aid for Women’s pro-life mission and play a vital role in affirming and supporting each mother in her
decision to choose life — providing her with the emotional, practical and spiritual support she and her baby need
while participating in our residential programs.

HEATHER’S HOUSE, located on the Maryville Academy Campus in Des Plaines, IL, provides a safe and nurturing
home where pregnant women and their babies can live. Heather’s House offers mothers an opportunity to develop
the life skills, education and job skills necessary to become independent and loving mothers.
MONICA’S HOUSE, located at St. Pascal Church in Chicago’s Portage Park neighborhood, serves as a transitional
home for Heather’s House residents who have had their babies and are either going to school or working. Monica’s
House provides these new mothers more independence, while they work toward completing their goals.

attend to administrative duties, including answering phones and
coordinating material donations;

participate and lead in morning Rosary and prayer for the community;

share Christ’s love through the study of Sacred Scripture, faith hours
and conversations;

prepare for and participate in Mass at Aid for Women’s chapels;

serve as Aid for Women ambassadors to visitors, volunteers and the
community at large.

Volunteers are the heart and core of Aid for Women! We would not impact the lives of so many without the time,
talent and dedication of our volunteers. In 2014, our volunteers generously gave 8,726 hours of service to Aid for
Women’s mission of serving God by promoting and defending life.

“New mom Paola visited our downtown center in
November with her beautiful one-month-old son,
Oscar. Paola first came to Aid for Women for a
pregnancy test and found out she was 4-1/2 weeks
pregnant. At that time, Paola was new to Chicago
and concerned about her financial situation and
finishing school. During her pregnancy, Paola
participated in our Earn While You Learn Program
and Moms-to-Be Support Group. Both mom and
baby are doing well!”

“Jada and her boyfriend came in for a pregnancy
test. The test was positive. They said they were
considering abortion because of their financial and
school situations. I explained fetal development,
the risks of abortion and how parenting and making
an adoption plan were life-giving options for them.
During Jada’s ultrasound exam, we were surprised
to find twins! Jada was clearly overwhelmed by the
news. A few days later, Jada told me that they had
decided to parent and were both nervous but excited
about the journey that lay ahead of them.”

“When I found out I was pregnant, my husband
and I were shocked and could not sleep. We were
thinking that we would not be able to continue
with the pregnancy and raise this baby because
of our limited financial resources. On the other
hand, I really did not want to have an abortion.
I had a previous abortion three years ago, and it
was a miserable memory. We felt so helpless and
exhausted. We searched the internet to find help
and found Aid for Women. The first time I came
to their downtown center, my counselor gave
me helpful information about prenatal care and
insurance options. What was the most important
was the encouragement she gave me. She told me,
‘We are always here for you. If you need help, just
let me know.’ These words were so powerful, and
I did not feel helpless anymore. I now know that
I can have this baby, and there are a lot of kind
people who want to support me.”

in June 2014 through the Knights of Columbus Ultrasound Initiative. The new 3-D state-of-the-art machine has allowed us to
expand ultrasound exam services to a total of three locations. We are excited to know that thousands of abortion-vulnerable
and abortion-minded women will choose life for their unborn babies because of the generous gift of this new technology!

“Three years ago, I found out that I was pregnant. I
was beyond scared and did not know what to do. My
boyfriend and I decided that we were not ready to
become parents. I made an appointment to have an
abortion at Planned Parenthood. They told me I needed
to have an ultrasound before the abortion so I searched
the internet for a place that offered free ultrasounds.
Thankfully, I stumbled upon Aid for Women.
Aid for Women provided me with a window into the
most beautiful sight that I had ever seen — my unborn
child. There was something I saw on that ultrasound
screen that totally changed my heart. I realized that
my baby was alive and that he needed me. It was only
twenty-four hours before my scheduled abortion when
I saw the picture that would change my life forever.
Seven months later I had Max. He is now two-and-ahalf and an active and healthy little boy. Max is an
amazing gift to my life!”
